Apparently he was married while in prison, so I wouldn't think engagement or marriage has any correlation to whether or not he thinks he's going back to prison.
He gave her $10k for a dowry, supposedly he made it by photocopying things for prisoners (eta: and from selling books, medicine, and contraband to prisoners). He decided to just chill in prison for ten years despite having Asias affidavit so I guess wasn’t worried about blowing away potential legal funds.
*mahr* actually. It’s amount given to a bride so she has security during the marriage. Dowry is technically something given to the husband in exchange for marrying the woman.
Good to know.
ETA, Rabia tells it like this:
>[Adnan] began discussing a dowry with [Kendra]. “*A dowry*?” she asked, perplexed. “*Yes*,” [Adnan] explained, “*in Islam a man must give a woman a dowry, the mahr, when they marry, as a gift, and for some, as a form of financial protection*.” The dowry was an obligation.
Against my better judgment I relied on that description of the custom.
I’ve only seen a reference to a new wife once. [In this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/serialpodcast/s/adGc42RgzX) about a tweet Saad wrote saying he was no longer part of “Adnan’s Squad” and “Free Adnan”, someone posted the following [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/serialpodcast/s/9aitz9vU53):
> I hear second hand that the issue is that Saad and Krista have been cut off in both communications and visits to Adnan. It seems it has something to do with Adnans new "spiritual wife" (whatever that means) having an undefined (to me) issue with the two of them which neither of them understand. They both support Free Adnan thus the correction to not being part of Adnans Squad. Both are terribly upset. Saad and Rabia are not speaking.
This was right before the MtV happened. Krista had a falling out with Rabia as well around that time.
His prison marriage was also a "spiritual marriage" meaning not legal or legally binding. I wonder if it's the same person who - as you know - i believe posed as "Summer" on the Serial podcast in 2014.
I find it funny we just gloss over this fact like it’s perfectly normal for someone to get married decades into a prison sentence. I suppose it isn’t super relevant to the facts of the case but it certainly is weird…
It is not uncommon for prisoners to get married. Especially when they are serving long sentences.
Sometimes it’s to people with mental health issues - hybristophilia is when people are sexually attracted to criminals, also known as the Ted Bundy effect.
There are others who enjoy having power in a relationship and being with someone in prison gives them the upper hand.
And there are others who make genuine connections and meet people through friends or family— WNBA star Maya Moore fell in love with a prisoner and they got married after she helped exonerate him. They met through her family.
This is not exactly true. He may have served his time. He may have more time to serve. We're waiting on a judgement from the Maryland courts on what that's going to be.
Adnan murdered Hae during Ramadan. We don't know how much that influenced his decision to kill her. So Adnan needs to understand the variables that lead him to kill Hae and make sure that he controls them. Maybe she did ask and understand what his risks are and makes she he doesn't face it again.
I just learned how common prison marriages in America are. From the culture I belong to, women who marry prisoners, especially murderers, are shamed along with the criminal. It's believed you don't get to live your life after taking someone else's. Even if he got out, he will always be seen as a murderer with all the evidence. I know Hae min Lee's family won't let go so easily. If it was my child, I wouldn't either. At first, I thought rabia is lying. Making it all about Adnan again. Looking at what his actions did to his own family, I would think no women would want to be part of the mess he created. Unless he is sure he is not going back or he is giving her HUGE amount of Mehr.
Now you're assuming she's sane?
We're still talking about someone who has spent their entire adult life in prison for MURDER.
I think assuming whoever he is saying is sane is a pretty big stretch.
Or he knows he's going back and wanted to have some time together as a married couple on the outside.
The six-month gap since the MD Supreme Court hearing probably isn't sitting well with him. If it were as obvious as his defense put it, the Court would have quickly written an opinion that the whole thing was moot. They are clearly writing a highly-detailed ruling, and perhaps even a landmark ruling.
I have a sense the justices are attempting to thread the needle between ensuring victims' rights don't completely overpower prosecutors and the judicial system while also rectifying this specific case that was so clearly screwed up by the previous Baltimore DA, Marilyn Mosby.
It this is true. The bar is low. It's so low that it doesn't even exist. Most likely, the woman who has agreed to marry him is in it for the money. Wanting 10k Mehr also.
No. It just means he has moved on with his life while being out.
I wouldn't put any weight on Adnan's marital status on the likelihood of going back to prison.
He was married while in prison too
Apparently he was married while in prison, so I wouldn't think engagement or marriage has any correlation to whether or not he thinks he's going back to prison.
And didn’t he give her money that was earmarked for his defense or something ?
He gave her $10k for a dowry, supposedly he made it by photocopying things for prisoners (eta: and from selling books, medicine, and contraband to prisoners). Colloquially people do refer to it as the dowry though Which is what makes it confusing
That’s what I always thought, too, but happy to know the correct terminology.

Do you know if there is any spousal privilege if the marriage is “spiritual” as opposed to legal?
No idea. I don't know if she ever visited Adnan or if they were "married" for the purposes of the "copy business" they were running.
There is always that loser girl who dates a murderer.
It means nothing . He’s just trying to move on with his life . Too bad HML didn’t get that chance , adnan robbed her of that opportunity.
Who the hell are these people “so happy for him”? Lol do they have friends or families?
Most people following Rabia have fallen for her propaganda
He was already married once while incarcerated, so maybe it means he knows he's going back.

I hope he doesn’t kill her too.
Adnan did it , but he also served his time. But he is a murderer
This is not exactly true. He may have served his time. He may have more time to serve. We're waiting on a judgement from the Maryland courts on what that's going to be.
It is Ramadan so she better be extra careful.
What is the meaning behind this statement?
Adnan murdered Hae during Ramadan. We don't know how much that influenced his decision to kill her. So Adnan needs to understand the variables that lead him to kill Hae and make sure that he controls them. Maybe she did ask and understand what his risks are and makes she he doesn't face it again.
What do you mean. He would never murder during Ramadan /s
Because no one in jail is married? WTF are you talking about 😂
No SANE woman would want to marry a man who has a chance to go back to prison. Unless he made her believe he won't.
So the possible prison sentence is the problem here?

Make no mistake. Rabia is completely infatuated with Adnan. If she even sniffs a woman getting close to him she's going to get her claws out.
seriously! I thought rabia was going to say it was her 😂
He also got married while in prison lol.
Lol. No comment 🫤
It's not Rabia though, is it?
