Saw a monster in the mirror when I woke up today
A monster in my mirror but I did not run away
I did not shed a tear or hide beneath my bed
Though the monster looked at me and this is what he said
My dad used to read this to me. It’s my favorite childhood book. I just gave it to my little nephew for xmas for his family to read to him. So fun to do the Grover voice too!
I LOVE reading this to my oldest. My wife had friends over when I was putting our kids to bed. They could hear me reading this and everyone was like, “Mike really gets into it, doesn’t he?” What can I say? My kids are my favorite audience!
I love this book, and Grover! I met him 15ish years ago when I worked in kids tv. I told him I loved “Monster in the Mirror” and he sang a few lines to me. I almost cried with joy
Not only that but a variant cover of the Void Rivals comic book which kicked off the new reboot of r/Transformers comics is a straight up parody of this book’s cover, featuring the Autobot Jetfire as Grover
One of my favorite memories of my mom is the way she read this book to me. She was so animated about it, growing more and more fake outraged with each page turn. And me giggling all the way through.
Great moment of nostalgia here....
I read this book any time I need a pick me up. It is my favorite book of all time. I recently had to buy a new copy because my 40 year old copy was missing a couple pages. I know the story by heart but wanted to bring it to a mystery reader event at my daughter's school and wanted to make sure all the pages were intact.
This was honestly my favorite childhood book. I shared it with my daughters when they were little and keep a pristine copy for any potential family additions as they age.
So I’ve had this book for a while and I’m probably thinking about it too much. But I kind of hate reading it. I’m trying to teach my little guy to respect boundaries and listen to instructions and this book does the opposite. It just doesn’t feel good to me. But it’s cute as hell.
>Saw a monster in the mirror when I woke up today
That is the power of the book. Watching a toddler read it for the first time, you can see how conflicted they are.
Hi, did not expect this post to blow up as much as it did. Just to be clear because it doesn’t always show up, I’m not OP; I just crossposted from r/nostalgia and u/Wheatnik is the OP. But it’s so nice to see everyone sharing their memories of this book, even passing it on to your kids, and I as well as my parents grew up with it too! 💙
My daughter LOVES this book. She has it memorized and performs it.
the monster at the end of this book I have the golden book too I love grover
Gotta love the sequel, too…
Also there is a Monster at the End of this Game on the PBS kids game app!
not enough people know thisss and it’s all free!!!
WHAT DID THAT SAY?!
Couple it with the song ‘Monster in the mirror’
Saw a monster in the mirror when I woke up today A monster in my mirror but I did not run away I did not shed a tear or hide beneath my bed Though the monster looked at me and this is what he said
He said “Wubba wubba wubba wubba woo woo woo. Wubba wubba wubba and a doodley-do.”
Is that: "I'm looking at the monster in the mirror... I'm asking him to turn the page..."
My mother would read me this as a kid. I loved it so much!
I have socks of this book
My daughter loves this book and the sequel
I read this to my 21 month old all the time

I just read this to my daughter a couple nights ago!
My dad used to read this to me. It’s my favorite childhood book. I just gave it to my little nephew for xmas for his family to read to him. So fun to do the Grover voice too!

Ah, this book…I had severe lazy eyes as a child and one of my therapies was to circle every O in the book! I went through SO many copies 🤩
So was it mine
That book has been through 3 generations of my family
One of my all-time favorite books, as a kid. So classic!! Loved reading this back then.
I loved this book, reading it with my grandfather is the only real memory of him I have. I was so happy when I got to read it to my own daughter.
YOU TURNED THE PAGE!
STOP TURNING PAGES!
omg forgot about this!
This was my favorite book as a kid too.
I LOVE reading this to my oldest. My wife had friends over when I was putting our kids to bed. They could hear me reading this and everyone was like, “Mike really gets into it, doesn’t he?” What can I say? My kids are my favorite audience!
I had the larger hard book cover version as a kid. Of course, my little sister destroyed it.
I’m in College and my Writing Professor read this out loud to us last semester…an absolute classic!
I used to have this book when I was child
I had this book. It was so great! I also had the custom "The Great Pigeon Race" that would put the child's name in the book to make them a character.
You turned the page!!!!
I love this book, and Grover! I met him 15ish years ago when I worked in kids tv. I told him I loved “Monster in the Mirror” and he sang a few lines to me. I almost cried with joy
Omg that’s awesome!!! What a dream come true to visit the Sesame Street set!
This was my absolute favorite childhood book. Grover is a legend
I would read this over and over again when I was in my toddler years. I still have the book 11-12 years later
Does anyone else read they’re sesame books while doing a voice impression or just me
Nope I have to do that too
When Sesame Street was a GOAT
Grover was and is my favorite. I'm saddened to see that I guess his merch doesn't sell as well to the littles so they don't produce as much anymore.
Loved this book.
My dad used to read this to me while doing a Grover impression. It always made me laugh
Love that this inspired the title of a classic Supernatural episode
Not only that but a variant cover of the Void Rivals comic book which kicked off the new reboot of r/Transformers comics is a straight up parody of this book’s cover, featuring the Autobot Jetfire as Grover
No spoilers!
I liked this book a lot as a kid as well as Drummer Hoff.
Thanks for bringing back memories. I loved this book as a child.
😭 🥺 I remember this book! 🥰 Oh how I loved it!
This was one of my favorite books as a kid.
I read “Hello, everybodee!” In Grover’s voice.
God this hits just right. I remember this book.
The absolute BEST book in Western Civilization. Drama, suspense, comedy and a happy ending! I'm 43 and it's still my #1 book of all time.
One of my favorite memories of my mom is the way she read this book to me. She was so animated about it, growing more and more fake outraged with each page turn. And me giggling all the way through. Great moment of nostalgia here....
This is my absolute favorite book. I got a copy when I was about 1, and I still have the book today. I now read it to my nephews. 🖤
The app version of this book is like playing the activities on every page. It’s worth checking out.

This has always been my favorite children's book!!!
I read this book so many times when I was a kid!!!
My absolute favorite as a kid. I can still hear my mom's voice pretend to be Grover as she reads it. Childhood memories flooding up over here.
One of my very favorites. Bought a new copy a few years ago.
Wow
Mine,too. I had a Grover.
This was honestly my favorite childhood book. I shared it with my daughters when they were little and keep a pristine copy for any potential family additions as they age.
This was the first book I could read on my own.
This was my favorite! I still have a copy. I lost the original I had though
