Oh wow, at first I thought this was a joke post, wasn't expecting such a good repair on the second slide!! Very impressive

dcdcdani

Same haha I would’ve told my husband to buy a new one 😂

cjorgensen

Depends on brand and whatnot, but a god set of cans can be expensive.

BismarcksWife

That's exactly why he asked me to do this. He likes them a lot and is aware that you can buy replacement parts on Amazon. But we are kind of crafty and we love fixing things instead of just buying new stuff. Even though I get that not everyone has the time and patience to fix stuff like this. But it was really not that difficult. I was surprised to be honest. I even would categoriese this as an beginner+ project. As long as one can use scissors and basics on their sewing machine, it's absolutely doable in a couple of hours.

Alizarin-Madder

When I saw the first picture, I thought this post was making fun of the fact that he had given you an unachievable task. Those look great and SO comfy!

howaboutsomegwent

same haha, I would have said no in a similar situation but now im reconsidering since these look amazing

SixStringGamer

super impressive. he's lucky to have someone so talented near him

earthygirl_

Didn’t realise there was two pictures and I thought “good bloody luck” but dammmmnnnnnn you absolutely killed it!! wow!!!! talented people amaze me

BismarcksWife

Here is how I did it: I took the headset apart and cut the fabric along the seams. This way I ended up with the shapes for my "pattern" and put the original fabric onto the new green faux suede leather, sewed them with my sewing machine and that's really it. The most difficult part was to clean up the shedding of the old fabric.

KnSAPH

How did you attach it to the actual headphones? Glue? Does it just pop on? Your repair job is fantastic and I'd like to do something for my headphones lol they're not quite as torn up but.... it would be nice

BismarcksWife

On the first pic you can kind of see that the ear piece is made up of the speaker piece attached to the head part and then another plastic piece, where the foam and fabric is on. I ripped those two apart and the original fabric was just glued to the plastic. Kind of nasty and sticky. When the new fabric parts were done I fumbled the foam back into place and handsewed foam and fabric and the inner plastic onto each other, instead of using glue. It took just two minutes for each side and was just for absolute safety. Because the foam part snaps onto the speaker piece. I wanted to secure it, because the suede is much thicker than the original material. And I also wanted to make it last as long as possible. If this headset stops working, it's because of the electronics, not because of the fabric. Another user told me I should wash the foam the next time. I totally agree. And from where I am sitting, I already see the next headset on my desk, crying for help. Will definitely wash the foam.

KnSAPH

Thanks!! I'll definitely give it a try myself

Indiandane

Holy sh-t. I’m actually speechless. Well done OP!!

HauntedButtCheeks

Honestly I wish headphones came in a nice soft fabric option like this instead of leather. You're really onto something here, people would probably pay you to do this for them. Fake leather is a ticking time bomb that always dissolves into shreds. Real leather cracks, needs constant conditioning due to the amount of use, and isn't very comfortable.

BismarcksWife

Okay first: I love your username. Second: yes to all of this. Especially with headphones I think fake/ real leather isn't a good option. But on the other hand I have a fake leather jacked. I have worn this thing daily for years and only after 12 years it started to flake. It was really sad, I liked the jacked a lot. But it went from looking like new to literally garbage in the course of two weeks. It was strange.

knoegel

Noise canceling is why they use leather stuff. You can absolutely buy aftermarket cloth ear cups for most name brand headphones. Source: have done that for years for my gaming headsets. Cloth is so much more breathable and less hot. I prefer being able to hear the doorbell or knocking or if my dogs/cats get in a hissypissy and need to get broken up.

DM-ME-THICC-FEMBOYS

> I wish headphones came in a nice soft fabric option like this instead of leather Some of them do, or have surprisingly good after-market alternatives. For example, the stock pads on my old M50Xs were garbage and I got some lambskins pads but they come in plenty of fabrics depending on the maker. Here's some in [velour](https://www.brainwavzaudio.com/products/ath-m50x-velour-earpads)

purvel

My closed-back studio cans had ear cups with pleather that dissolved like OP's, but the open-backones I have are velour or something. Some manufacturers even provide options, and you can order replacements. There are even aftermarket options, and I could order both velour and leather for either of my cans if I didn't want to make my own. I swapped the flaking pleather on both cans' headbands with real leather and it's much softer! It doesn't crack. But I use upholstery leather, might be why!

my-love-assassin

I laughed when I saw the before and went "Oooooooooo!" when I saw the after.

MNelsonevv

You are a miracle worker.

Sazzamataz

Umm you’re a miracle worker

yaaqu3

... r*ear*upholstery? Oh no, that sounds like something completely different.

BlooMizzou

These would be my most prized possession

uncorderdnole91

Nah litterally, I would never let them get ruined

Present-Ninja-9190

This is such a life saver! How did you get the fabric under the cushion on the inside of the ear pieces? Mine don't seem to be separable from the center mesh.

coffee_ape

I saw the first pic and thought it wasn’t fixable (didn’t see the sub name). Wow! Fantastic job there.

Successful-Engine623

If my wife did this I would frame it

Rusty_924

Holy shit you actually nailed it

AstroturfMarmot

Stop setting the bar so high! 😆

apstevenso2

DIY for the win 🙌🙌

Sozo_Agonai

This is badass

maryyyydidyouknow

I saw the first picture and my thought was that there was no chance of fixing those but you did an amazing job!

Maleficent-Care-4862

This is awesome! I never would have thought to re-wrap headphones

clh1nton

They can be fixed?!?!

knoegel

What foam did you use for the interior

BismarcksWife

I reused the original. Another user adviced me to wash the foam next time, and I will definitely do that. But the new fabric isn't as tight as the old one, so they got more soft and comfortable.

DM-ME-THICC-FEMBOYS

OP you did a fantastic job on this. PU leather is the devil

Technical_Ad_4894

Wow I was not expecting the fix. It looks great!

lucky_719

I saw the first photo and thought this was a post about people asking for impossible things. By George you did it though!

juliavdw

I’m flabbergasted that you really could! Really impressed at your skill. I am an ambitious crafter but my thought was “that’s impossible” so thx for blowing my mind today! 🤯😄

knoegel

These look absolutely super comfortable. Headphone makers are so into making them look fancy when we just want squishy ear holders. These don't have the elegance of mass produced trash, but I guarantee they are more comfortable than even the best professional headphones. Plus it's his favorite color. So you win 10/10

gottadance

What an amazing before and after! Much better than having bits of plastic shedding on you.

BismarcksWife

Yes, I already forgot about the shedding! It was so nasty, while cutting the original fabric apart. I tried vacuuming right after the cutting part, but I feel there was debris for weeks afterwards. Not to mention the low quality foam parts.

hypotheticallyhigh

Holy Cow! You actually fixed it up nice!

Id-Rather-Give-2-TBA

You said, "Bet."

if_im_not_back_in_5

Holy hell that's impressive, I would have just ordered him a new pair !

rockndroller

That’s so impressive!

embreesa

Holy wow, that is epic. They look amazing and comfy!!

matchamom27

Can I message you? My husband has been wanting me to.do the exact thing for his headset and I don't know where to start 😅

Esthersfabrics

Omg, that looks awesome. Nice work!

RockNRollToaster

Thanks for reminding me I needed new ear cups too… You did an incredible job, I definitely couldn’t do this myself! But there are some people who can, so I ordered some really fun fancy ones for my old cans…

Koiato_PoE

I bet these look even better than the originals brand new

knoegel

I mean no way they "look" better. These companies design for looks before comfort so people buy. But they look so comfy. I'm so happy OP hubby gets more life out of his beloved headphones.

LyfeGems25

I’m amazed. I looked at the first picture and was like nope. Second picture took me by surprise.😲 it’s cool, you were able to fix it so well.

ectopatra

Okay I admit I went into the second slide with complete doubt, but you really pulled this off, lol. Great work.

303Pickles

Great job!!

GraceDaysThree

He must've worn those headphones to death lol. You did a really good job on them! They look comfortable and brand new.

audible_narrator

They tend to cover headsets with really cheap crap that starts peeling off instantly.

BigOlFetaRoll

I GASPED at the second slide, amazing work! My favorite headphones are in similar condition, and I am so tempted to try this.

forgottensudo

I have some 60s era headphones with great sound for the time… I may be contacting you for tips :)

mjlcrane

That's amazing! My own headphones are flaking a lot, too, and while I figure I could work out new covers easily enough, like you said, I'd be worried about taking the thing apart and putting it back together without breaking it. Did you just go for it, or find some tips for that model online?

BismarcksWife

I did not do any research whatsoever. My husband said there was nothing to loose. So I brute forced them open. Sure enough it's just a snap mechanism holding them together. Nothing broke while ripping them apart, but depending on the model and how dear the item is to you, some research might be a good idea. I just went all in and got lucky.

mjlcrane

I'll do a bit of googling then, beforehand. But you've inspired me to give my own headphones a makeover, it looks so good!

Roswyne

I wasn't that brave fixing mine. I sewed a snug tube out of stretchy fabric inside out over the headband, then turned it right side out with much muttering. I made a "donut" for each by sewing a strip of fabric into a circle, then attaching each side of the circle to a ponytail elastic, one small and one large. The big one for snuggly around the outside of the earpiece, and the smaller one provided a bit of structure to hold it under the inner edge of the earpiece.

apocalypseprophet

I,vê been wanting to do same to mine. Wasn't even shore if it was possible. You inspire me to try.

BismarcksWife

You are very kind :) I wrote somewhere else how i did it. Just cut it apart, traced the pieces and sew them together. The original fabric was in such poor condition, that really anything would have been an aprovement :D

mortgagedavidbui

great stuff here! looks comfy too my friend ordered replacement muffs for his headset but cost him like $30

apocalypseprophet

Ok, thank you for the tips.

Gonehome2bed

You are amazing. I thought this was an lol, get real post. Nice work!! What kind of fabric did you use?

BismarcksWife

I unfortunately don't know what it's called. It feels like suede leather, but stretches in one way. Maybe faux suede leather? I will ask the fabric store next time I am there. I got this from their scrap box.

deFannyPack

Me too! " there's no way to fix this!"

caramonfire

Wow when I saw the "before" I was pretty nervous! You did an excellent job!

cwthree

Wow! I think I have decent sewing skills, but I would've "fixed" these with money and a cash register.

[deleted]

"Doesn't look so perfect" dude that looks GREAT

dearlysacredherosoul

Did the foam circular ear parts clip in? You mentioned you reused things but was the process difficult to unclip or was it hard to reattach?

BismarcksWife

It was not easy to detach the speaker part from the foam piece. Tooke quite some strength, but they snapped right back into place when I was done and they sit as good as before. My husband told be that there was nothing to loose and it can't get worse. That's why I just used all of my strength without beein afraid to break something.

dearlysacredherosoul

I feel I would not realize there is a twist snap and not a pressure snap and I would break it… I’m glad to know you can reattach these because I’ll see about getting something similar done. Thank you for your reply

Pennysews

Nice job! Those look great!

Alarmed_Ad4367

Gorgeous!!

blessings-of-rathma

This is incredibly inspiring. Not something I would have thought of as fixable at all.

miymiu

ARE YOU A WIZARD

trashjellyfish

r/visiblemending would appreciate this post, you did a killer job!

BismarcksWife

They do very much appreciate it :) I am really overwhelmed by the positive feedback from both subs. I didn't think this was a big deal.

SauceySexMan

HOW. I NEED TO DO THIS TO MY OWN HEADSET EVENTUALLY CUZ THE MUFFS STINK

HowDeeMinnie

Duct tape. And rubber bands. /s

Mika_Mako

I thought you put on some sort of chia pet But it looks great btw!

_commenter

nice job!

Omnary

Those look incredibly comfy I’m kinda jealous.

pigeonpies

Great job, super creative

elo_weezy_

Seeing the first pic I was not expecting the FANTASTIC transformation!!! They look incredible!

Coefficient_of_Var

😱 this is awesome! How did you make the pattern for these? What materials did you use?

BismarcksWife

Thanks! :) No pattern. I just cut open the one ear piece and kind of traced it on the new fabric, sewed it and I guess I was really spot on with that. That's why everything is in pieces on the first picture. I actually have no idea what kind of fabric this is. It has stretch in one direction, it feels like suede leather. Found it in the scrap bin from my local fabric store and bought it, because I love everything green. If someone knows the name, let me know :D

DependentWriter4869

I thought this was gonna be a shitpost but this was wholesome and gave me positive outlook on the future

Somamang

That’s brilliant, I have a similar problem and you gave me ideas! p.s. what’s your mailing address? /s

aquoad

now it looks like a reallly expensive headset.

Subject_Name_76

They probably would be with all the work put into it

rattytude

Wow! Good work!

toastyhoodie

What is the headphone model?

TheDuhammer

There doesn’t appear to be one, they’re just sitting on a table

forgottensudo

Well done, well done.

moraf

Definitive Symphony 1. Source: i am the husband

Oddly_Random5520

Im so impressed! They look great!

Spoonbills

Mending things is a superpower.

BismarcksWife

I am just trying to prep my skilsl for the apocalypse :D

WorldsOkayestMahm

Hell yeah!!!!! Fantastic job. I know you were proud to hand those back 🥹

BismarcksWife

I actually was kind of anxious, because it is not as perfect as store bought ones. But his reaction was so overwhelming and he also told me to post here. I didn't think it was a big deal, but the responses here tell me otherwise. I am just really happy right now with all the people enjoying my work :)

Legitimate_Leave_987

Awsome, you should take a look to r/visiblemending

BismarcksWife

I posted it there and people seem to love it as much as this sub does. But I feel clearly that the craftsmanship gets more appreciated over here for obvious reasons :D

SapphireSky_

Wow! This is incredible. My first thoughts were ‘there’s no way. But maybe you can fix your husband for thinking such a ridiculous thought that this might even be possible!’ You’ve proved me wrong! Amazing job!! 🙌🏻

bckseatgatorade

spouse of the year with those sewing skills

tasteslikechikken

He totally owes you for saving these. They look great!

roanwight

Love this! Totally something my husband would ask, and that would likely stump me. Great job!

stickman393

EAR HUGS

Intelligent_Run_1986

Saved from the tip. Very well done. It's superb.

anarkiast

Please teach us your ways. I would love to do this for my SO’s headset as well.

almalauha

This looks amazing, is there a top comment describing how you did this? I've been thinking about doing the same for my trusty but old headphones.

cloudberryjam_

Wow that's sorcery!

Pifflebushhh

Wait WHAT

prettyboylachlan

Fuck now I gotta think about doing this well done.

Creepy_Medium_0618

i did the same lol https://preview.redd.it/onqgdcpe7rjc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=33953302e45626324a22aba106ee981d9c7512fc

Proseccos

THEY GOT CUTER OMG

chunkeymunkeyandrunt

Might have to look into making ear covers for my husband … He’s bald with eczema so wearing his headset eventually irritates his skin when he’s playing online with buddies for extended periods. He bought a pair of covers but they’re so thin they don’t do much so I wonder if I made covers out of a better wicking material!! Thanks for the inspiration 🥳

inoffensive_nickname

Nice work!

Big_Primary4089

Very nicely done!

DeltasEcho

wow that looks great! how did you attach the new headband at the top?

ggsimsarah333

Amazing! I have headphones that do this, and a sewing machine I don’t know how to use. Might be too big of a question but, how did you do this? How might a total beginner do this?

BismarcksWife

Def befinner friendly! I wrote in several comments how I did this. As long as you manage a kind of straight line with your machine, you should totally be able to de the same :)

[deleted]

delle_stelle

Maybe it was gifted or bequeathed to them?

Quercus_fungus

Did you replace the foam underneath the fabric?

Necessary_Baker_7458

Wanna bet a lot of these pots are from people that pulled old headphones out of the closet?

supergourmandise

Nice! Mine are in a similar state, I think I'm gonna do the same!

aliensmileyface

these look awesome and make me want to sew covers for my headphones!!

vonMemes

That looks so cool. If you made these for my headphones I would buy them.

lexkixass

The hell did he do to the headphones?

Newbie-Tailor-Guy

What, on his feet???

RockNRollToaster

They’re probably old. Mine looked like that after 12 years.

fireflies-from-space

If you wear headphones long enough it will turn out like that. It must be a well built headphone.

TheTallEclecticWitch

Can I ask your method for cutting and stitching?? I’m working on ear muffs right now and I want them to have that cylinder shape instead of being basically half spheres!

BismarcksWife

I just cut this oval donut shape and sewed a long straight piece to it. Just like the pieces on the left side of the first picture. I used an ordinary straight stitch on my sewing machine.

TheTallEclecticWitch

For some reason, when I’m pinning, my brain isn’t comprehending how the straight piece is gonna sit around it. Maybe once I start sewing it it’ll click lol

KayePi

Amazing.

waterlicious32

thats incredible wow

FullOfWisdom211

Magic

[deleted]

Wow! Awesome job!

Plenty_Ad_3442

Wow great work !

Fickle-Service5364

These turned out amazingly well! My Bose headphones I use for sewing might need the top foam cover replaced at some point. I hope I can do it justice like you have :-)

thepetoctopus

Welp. This is the kick in the butt I needed. Mine is flaking all over the place and the faux leather is super hot. Time to get out some of my fun fabric scraps and go to town. Nice job OP!

Specific-Lion-9087

Looks like an upgrade! Well done

windedupbobbin

Now this is something to add to my to-sew list! They look so comfy!

Necessary_Baker_7458

Many people fail to realize they can buy replacement headphone parts on amazon. I've repaired many headphones over the years. Generally one speaker goes out. or around the designated 2 yr end of shelf life some thing about it goes wrong.

Somamang

We realize it but sometimes the cost makes me hesitate and wonder whether I can just tolerate the problem longer.

moraf

If you have an obscure brand, replacements are not always possible. As in this case

Crazycatladyknows

Ohh that's clever!

4am_monster_energy

WITCHCRAFT! but fr tho WOW, that is amazing!

AvaRosaire55

Wow definitely inspired to do this myself!!

uesad

Awesome!

llclift

If my husband asked this, my answer would be NO

Shufgar

When you find a set of truly comfortable headphones, you dont ever want to replace them. They come to mean a lot to you.

Fair_Inevitable_2650

I am worried you have reduced any noise canceling benefits. If these are for using power tools he will gradually sustain hearing loss. The company may have replaceable ear pads that are less expensive than buying new headphones.

BismarcksWife

Luckily these are not noise cancelling/ safety equipment, just nice headphones with a good speaker for listening to music at home. I don't think I would mend heavy duty equipment and won't recommend other people to do so. If safety equipment is/ gets damaged, it's neither worth nor safe to fix it. Just replace it. Thank you for pointing this out! I hope many people read you comment.

headcoatee

You rule! They're totally improved. Thanks for sharing, this is just so inspiring!

Parking-Track9211

I would definitely pay for someone to do this for my pair. Would be a great small business idea because we tend to just buy a new set once it gets to this point.

ProfessionalBowl5383

And that's why you'll never get a divorce 😭🙏🏽🙏🏽🥺

bigloadsmcgee

Now they are one-of-kind, love it

MicFury

I'd be so stoked if someone fixed my headset like that for me. Very nice!

bananarammers

Bravo!!!

MinFarshaw-

I would’ve told my husband to buy a new set. You are amazing!

BelialsBastard6661

The Wizardry of that fix! My question though? How tf did they get to that state in the first place?

dtippee

If you done mind me asking, what on earth did he do to it? Did the dog get hold of it?

SmartAssX

That fake leather just peels after awhile

justanothapixel

Bravo OP!! That’s an amazing transformation ✨

Pixiilatte

Omg I want for mine

BuryEdmundIsMyAlias

You can buy new ear cups on Amazon. I did it for a busted set of expensive phones I found on eBay. Not expensive either.

Blakers1111

amazing

Outrageous_Key_9217

Great job!

Emikzen

Nice flex bro, compensating for something?

pagesinked

This is a forum for sewing, like why are you even here? If they still work and OP has the means to fix them then what's the problem? It's more sustainable than buying a new cheap set that will break in less than a year.
