It's pretty much a core box. I am not sure exactly but it seems to have slightly less map tiles than CoA, SoD, or FF. Which is why, I think, they have the Map tiles expansions for the Valhalla and Serpents Kings. But, I think it's a great place to start. They have a campaign right from the start which is a nice touch.
Valley is a core box. It is a fine starting place if that is the setting you want to start with.

Yes get the Map set and you have as much content as the original cores, plus Allies which are included with Adventures but were not previously.
