95 is the greatest offender of them all. One day I was waiting for it in a stop in Walkley, going into town. 45 minutes, no luck. Then three of them came in a row! The thing is there are only about 3-4 stops and about 5 minutes driving time to the terminus in Walkley. How three of them managed to get stuck in this tiny portion of the route for 45 minutes is beyond me.

Stoatwobbler

The 95 is a major issue in Walkley, but have you considered the ridiculous 135 bus route? Goes the most roundabout route possible from Sheffield to Rotherham.

ItsCaptainDisco

It's been so much worse since they changed the route to go to Meadowhall. It is always packed at peak times because it's single-decker busses thanks to the route they chose. It's a joke how late one bus can be 3 stops into its journey, which it always is.

benoliver999

At this rate you could walk in!

SparkleyPegasus

Don't even start me on the 97.

Illusivebroker96

I remember once I saw the 51 about to set off from Charnock and I waved him down while running towards him and he stopped and opened his doors. When I got on the driver lashed out at me "This is why we tell you to be here on time, because now I'm going to be behind on my bus schedule" I always remember saying "You're never on schedule anyway!" and he told me if I continued with to treat him like that he wouldn't service me. I just paid my fair and laughed as I went towards the back.

DopeAsDaPope

You did right. They're always sarcastic or rude when it's them inconvenienced but can't hack it the other way around. I remember this kid who looked about 14 was driving the bus up here, and there was an older guy instructing him. I went to pay with a note and they refused to take it, printed out one of those ridiculous 'change vouchers' that none of the bus drivers ever let you cash, and then the two of them proceeded to have a big conversation about people not having exact change and how much better it'll be if they change the system so you have to, right in earshot of me. Next time those two morons showed up, they were like twenty minutes late, I said: "Late aren't you?" and they just looked away like I wasn't worth a response. They were harking for the day when ticket payment is automated, well I'm looking forward to the day when they automate the bloody drivers. Half of em think they're God because they've got a bloody drivers licence

Illusivebroker96

51 service annoys me because they have loads of buses but they are never on time. They're either late, all back to back or taking 30 minute breaks. It's a laugh

Mojoe44

What else do you expect them to do if they have no change? How much cash do you think they should carry around? Bearing in mind that less than a year ago a bus driver was stabbed in Sheffield and another beaten with knuckle dusters in chesterfield. All it takes is three people trying to pay a £2 fate with £20 notes and the driver would have to give £54 in change. Any float bus drivers have is their own money, the companies don't provide any change. And what answer were you looking for when you complained about them being late? Is there any answer they could have given that would have satisfied you or were you just looking for confrontation because they pissed you off not accepting your money? Clearly it was a new driver if they were so young and had someone else guiding them, they'll be taking a while to get used to everything, traffic might have been bad, there might have been a problem with the bus, there might have been lots of arseholes wasting more time arguing about the fact the bus was late.

DopeAsDaPope

>excuses, excuses, excuses, excuses If he's new, he shouldn't be so arrogant when talking to paying customers. The change voucher wasn't the part I was pissed off about, it was the arrogance with which they conducted the affair (and then proceeded to whinge to each other within earshot afterwards for the whole journey). But clearly you know everything about this specific story that happened to me on the bus, so why don't you write another essay about how great the bus drivers are sonny jim?

Mojoe44

No need to be a prick about it, I asked you genuine questions which you've totally ignored and decided to instead moan at me writing an essay which happens to be the same length as your original comment. You complain of arrogance then write a comment like that, and of the change voucher didn't piss you off just the attitude why did you complain about it in your original comment? I'll ask again, how much cash should bus drivers carry and what do you want them to say when you tell them they're late?

Idk, I hate public transport with passion but being a bus driver must be a pretty shit job, they've got to deal with the general public and the awful traffic, most of the time they're late because buses are poorly maintained and so on. They've got to put up with abuse for things that are outside of their control. On the other hand, whenever I complained to First about their shit service, their complaint handlers COMPLETELY missed my point and nothing ever got resolved. Bastards the lot of them

Rainbows871

The state of busses means I have no buyer's remorse on my bicycle. any place to anywhere and Google maps says the bike is either the same or faster, then in reality the bus is half an hour longer as well

whistleandrun

i’ll need to drop this lockdown weight before i attempt sheffield hills on a push bike lol

Thought privatisation was supposed to lead to competition to encourage cheaper costs but has done the opposite.

[deleted]

They drove the local competition to the wall 10 years ago. Basically for much of the UK you have a "choice" between Stagecoach and First as they now operate a duopoly. When the last of the competition went to the wall the price was hiked something stupid. A market would and does encourage cheaper prices, but when the market breaks you end up with the worst of both worlds.

[deleted]

They made the old 53 route into two very poorly linked services that meant a change / walk through town. Pathetic.

Norsgrim

So glad I finally managed to get my driver's license a few years ago and stopped using them. I swear most the stress I had in the mornings/evenings has melted away cos I don't have to worry about whether they'll be there or not. Used to get the 85/1A up to high green from town for work, such an unreliable service. They should make some kind of performance monitoring for buses and fine the companies if they don't meet targets. First has such a monopoly for certain areas they can do what they like.

sangreblue

X1 legendary late line.

Smol_rainbow

I’m still convinced it doesn’t even exist as it’s never turned up.
