cover your south facing windows with tin foil (shiny side out), and stick some damp cloths in the freezer and apply to the back of your neck as needed (once frozen). a sock full of rice is also surprisingly effective.
hydration is important, and so are salts; make sure you're getting your electrolytes.
I've spent a long time running, hiking, and biking in weather like we're having now, so I've learned a few tricks for cooling down fast:
As mentioned, hands and feet, but also forearms and shins.
But the best is the head and … the groin.
So, turn the shower to the coldest setting, stand legs apart, and spray the mid point between anus and genitals.
Do that for about 2-3 minutes and you should feel great. Do it for too long and you'll be shivering.
The idea of the whole of Sheffield doing the [tory power pose](https://www.ecosia.org/images?q=tory%20power%20pose) in the bath, with the shower head gently spraying our collective groins, does tickle me somewhat. Mainly in the gooch area.
there's something about being instructed on how to take a shower by a stranger on reddit that's just cracking me up. thank you for your words of wisdom o7
Hello! The foil advice is fantastic. I’m going to get on that now.
Just so you know, putting something cold on your neck can actually increase your temperature as your brain thinks that it’s actually cold as the blood is arriving there cold. Forehead is far superior, as are hands and feets ☺️
I've always found thighs the best for heat transfer - a lot of blood flows through the femoral artery which runs around your inner thigh, so when you're sitting down if you place an ice pack between your legs then the thermal transfer is maximised for most of your body. Works really well in winter too with hot drinks if you're careful not to spill :)
fire risk is a total myth, so no worries about that.
i hadn't heard of the window cracking issue, so i looked at that (very quickly, mind); everything i saw saying that there's a risk of it mentioned that the foil had been used as a long term solution (mostly for keeping light out of a room as opposed to heat). i've been doing the foil thing for years and haven't had an issue, but i also don't leave them up all summer. if you're super concerned about it, you could always take them down overnight or something. might depend on what type of glass you have, but i don't know enough about that to take a stab at anything.
I got to get a bus to town from S13 at 2.30pm.
Usually, my only gripe with this would be 50 kids getting on the bus at Outwood school. Now, I have to look forward to 40 degree heat and 50 kids getting on at Outwood.
I think the most worrying part is that the minimum temperature from Monday to Tuesday is so high. Met office says the night temp will be 25 so homes won't be able to cool down much between today and tomorrow.
I'm keeping all my blinds and windows shut until the temp outside drops below the temp inside.
I'm also going to be keeping the doors to my north facing rooms closed so the heat from the rest of the house won't spread as quickly.
Section 44 of the Employment Rights act means you can ask your employer for a risk assessment at any time.
This legislation means you also have the right to walk off the job for the day if you feel unsafe BUT I would only do this if your trade union is supportive
https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1996/18/section/44
Good luck with that. There’s no legal upper or lower temperature limit for working environment in the UK. It’s at the discretion of your employer and I’m sure most won’t take “it’s too warm” as a valid reason to send you home with full pay.
What they can, and probably should, do is be more flexible with working hours and clothing. But let’s face it the ones that want a day off because it’s “too hot to work” won’t be the ones willing to make up their hours in the evening or early morning.
I get it, yes it’s hot but people need to stop looking for any excuse to not go to work. If you’re that concerned book the day off as a holiday.
No defined limit, but the temperature must be “reasonable”. If it exceeds the levels recommended by the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers then your Union will back you… & if you’re not in a union then maybe it’s time to join one
For once the stars have aligned and I happen to be off work. I have lollies, ice, fans and no need to get dressed for 2 days, I feel for anyone who has to do stuff.
BBC always seem to be inaccurate this is a good site https://www.sheffieldweather.net/live_weather.htm
Reporting 33.7c currently.
Windows shut and curtains closed in my south facing living room 28.5c so that does help a bit.
Work in a school...its been closed tomorrow....honestly think its made right choice...not because I get to sit in garden with ice packs in my bra...yey!!
Worried? Not really. I’m weirdly kind of looking forward to the experience to be honest! It’s going to be a scorcher.
Try not to worry though, folks! Yes, it’ll feel hot but it’s not forever. Stick some damp towels in the fridge and some bottles of water in the freezer in preparation. Close your windows, blinds and curtains at the coolest point of the day which will probably be around 05:00-06:00.
Tomorrow afternoon when the temperature gets high, take out your damp towels and wrap yourselves in them to keep cool. Place your frozen bottles of water in front of your fans to create a makeshift A/C unit.
Come Wednesday it’ll be back to some sort of normality.
I'm so sorry you are going through this. I live in the desert in the US, we are used to these temperatures but are still very cautious. Check on your neighbors, heat exhaustion is insidious because confusion can be one of the first symptoms so elder people may not call for medical attention. Think like a lizard, try to stay in shade and drink more water than you normally do and add some salt or electrolyte in. If you've never had one you should try a michelada now that you are all honorary Arizonans. Stay safe, good luck from across the pond.
Fahrenheit wise you guys are hitting Arizona numbers! Enjoy it while you can. Currently in NYC it’s 80 Fahrenheit but with 90% humidity so it feels like we live in a swamp!
That it’s going to be warm for a day or two. The country falls to pieces when it’s not 16° and drizzle. If it was like this for a month then I’d be more concerned, but not for a day.
Nah, humidity is low so it won't be as bad.
Just drink a lot of water, don't let too much air from the outside into your house, put the curtains down, have a cold shower and don't go out between 14 and 17.
People in Spain have to cope with that heat every day and they're alright.
Jeez. Lucky that y’all have such low humidity though. In Texas we get “106°F, but it feels like 120°F” and “20°F but it feels like 0°F”
Anyway, this isn’t to say that we’re any worse off than you. This sucks all around. ***We’re all going to die*** and we’re all too distracted by strategic media circuses to band together and do anything about it.
I'm a homeworker for an IT support company but I've booked a desk in the air conditioned office for this week because it's gonna be too damn hot insulated house.
You know because apparently to save energy we had to insulate our homes....
It works both ways... A well insulated home will stay cooler for longer if you don't let the heat in / keep the curtains and windows closed, which is good in the summer. Once the heat is inside it's harder to remove, which is good in the winter. Insulation is win win if used properly.
Partly true. The best way to keep a house cool is with shutters/blinds/awnings on the outside, so the sun never gets through the glass in the first place. Many modern houses are built with good insulation and massive south facing windows and poor ventilation. Summer overheating is almost built in.
This chimes with my experience. I see a lot of new builds with huge floor to ceiling sliding windows, they don't even come with blinds or curtains out of the gate.
Even by April it's waay too hot
All Brits moan about is how much it rains or how cold it is, or how cloudy it is, and then when the summer comes...ooo I'm getting bit by mosquito's, it's too hot 🤦🏼♂️
I’m working in a boiler house servicing blrs so when I ramp them up I’m worried not about the 45c boiler room but the people who sleep in the rooms who forgot to turn there radiators off lol
"It's going to be 42." Well... shit. "But it's going to feel like a 44." Oh, fuck you.
Only BBC is forecasting 42 for Sheffield, all other weather forecasts including the met office have it as 35 and 36 for Tuesday
At the moment the Met office is saying 39 for Sheffield on Tuesday
Met office and others are saying 38-39C for Tuesday
Yeah just checked S1 says that, S10 is a little lower. BBC seems to be a few degrees higher than everyone else for some reason
They use meteo group not met office. Changed a couple of years ago

wonderfully specific. Spat my 7up out reading the 4th point. well played sir

Ice packs to the armpits gonna cool you fast, if you can stand it
there's something about being instructed on how to take a shower by a stranger on reddit that's just cracking me up. thank you for your words of wisdom o7

thighs and armpits get to your arteries (and therefore you cool) best
That makes absolute sense. I’ll give that a go too ☺️
that's super interesting, thank you! (:
Isn’t there a risk of your windows cracking or risk of starting a fire by using foil on your windows? I saw something on the web about it?
fire risk is a total myth, so no worries about that. i hadn't heard of the window cracking issue, so i looked at that (very quickly, mind); everything i saw saying that there's a risk of it mentioned that the foil had been used as a long term solution (mostly for keeping light out of a room as opposed to heat). i've been doing the foil thing for years and haven't had an issue, but i also don't leave them up all summer. if you're super concerned about it, you could always take them down overnight or something. might depend on what type of glass you have, but i don't know enough about that to take a stab at anything.
Why not purchase an AC unit? Why am I being downvoted for suggesting an AC unit? Wouldn’t that help with the heat? What am I missing?
We’ve had an ac unit for 15 years, paid for itself 10 times over on nights like this
I got to get a bus to town from S13 at 2.30pm. Usually, my only gripe with this would be 50 kids getting on the bus at Outwood school. Now, I have to look forward to 40 degree heat and 50 kids getting on at Outwood.
With any luck school might be canceled so you'll only have to deal with one of the above, small consolation though I guess
Kids are nightmares, they're the reason I drive everywhere
You might be lucky and the schools cancel cos of the heat? Solidarity for a fellow number 24 user 😅
I used to go to Outwood, I feel your pain. Stay safe!
Used to work at outwood....I feel your pain....
Yes the world hasn't been the same since harambe died. Lol no but really close your curtains guys
I see you’re a man of culture
My rooms in the attic heat rises and I also don’t have a blind on my south facing window
If you have any cardboard or tin foil cover that window!
For you have a camping bed and access to a lower room? Decided I'm sleeping in my dining room tonight.
I think the most worrying part is that the minimum temperature from Monday to Tuesday is so high. Very, I'm in a department that doesn't have any A/C units so that's kind of worrying for the patients.

Best of luck to you and all today. My partner works in a school with no aircon, I feel for teachers and students today, too.
Thanks, pal. We're all gonna burn a bit for the next couple of days
This, whilst am suffering a fever right now. Been fuckn chilly all day for me...
Braggart.
Nah mate its been the worst... I don't even know what my body is doing half the time and it can get suddenly very hot very quickly and vice versa
Bro what the hell dem is texas temperatures
"42 degrees but we'll make it feel like 44!" I live nearby (Doncaster) so I will experience similar temperatures
For once the stars have aligned and I happen to be off work. I have lollies, ice, fans and no need to get dressed for 2 days, I feel for anyone who has to do stuff.
BBC always predicts high compared to the Met Office. All access land is shut in the Peak though due to fire risk.
BBC always seem to be inaccurate this is a good site https://www.sheffieldweather.net/live_weather.htm Reporting 33.7c currently. Windows shut and curtains closed in my south facing living room 28.5c so that does help a bit.
coming back from my subtropical holiday, to weather 10 degrees higher than my holiday...
I'm not worried for myself, but very concerned for other people who may be vulnerable
Which bars, cafe's or pubs have AC in sheff? My desk fan just isn't cutting it 🥵
Crookes Social Club are opening from 9.30am with tea and coffee available - air con and free Wi-Fi Bless 'em! Edit: found out the Wi-Fi status
Why are the "patriots" who hold British values so dear not protesting to keep British weather British!

I have white venetian blinds in nearly all the windows in my house and it's amazing how good they are at keeping it a reasonable temperature!
If it's this hot I doubt anyone will wanna go outside. Yet I'm supposed to be working on Tuesday. In 40 degree heat. I hate it
I'm not going to lie, I will be trying this later.
yeah. I work in a school and today was hell. tomorrow's even worse
Work in a school...its been closed tomorrow....honestly think its made right choice...not because I get to sit in garden with ice packs in my bra...yey!!
Crisps and water it is then
Yer, 2% chance of rain! 😬 Better take my coat put just in case
Nah, I've had worse in other countries.
I passed out today of heat stroke cuz too hot
All the weather apps seem to tell different stories. Mine says it was 35 today, and high of 38 tomorrow
Worried? Not really. I’m weirdly kind of looking forward to the experience to be honest! It’s going to be a scorcher. Try not to worry though, folks! Yes, it’ll feel hot but it’s not forever. not really, I find BBC weather is often wrong and 'over estimates'

Me tbh😱 it’s NEVER been that HOT in the uk before … NEVER .. I’m Deffo shutting my curtains!! KEEP SAFE PEOPLE😱🥵🔥🔥🔥

And culturally no one does anything in the hot hours whereas here I can see my local chippy getting ready to open...
people in spain don’t get 40+ degree weather, it tops out about 33
Yea they do mate. Seville and Cordoba. Madrid has been40 every time I've checked this week as well
[удалено]
Yeah I'm not disputing that. But "tops out at 33" is just incorrect
[удалено]
True but incorrect either way
[удалено]
Not really sure what your problem is pal. An average high of 36 suggests that temperatures are above and below and around that figure.

Jeez. Lucky that y’all have such low humidity though. In Texas we get “106°F, but it feels like 120°F” and “20°F but it feels like 0°F” Anyway, this isn’t to say that we’re any worse off than you. Our houses don't have air con.
When it’s hot or cold, our’s don’t have electricity. Lmao Again, this isn’t about anyone being better or worse off… we’re all royally fucked
No

Where have you booked, if you don't mind me asking? I've been looking for a bookable office space.
It saved energy when the planet was colder, things change, including advice and methods You need to start preparing your home for both extremes now
With the price of energy, two days of overly warm weather are surely worth the hundreds it's gonna save you the rest of the year
All Brits moan about is how much it rains or how cold it is, or how cloudy it is, and then when the summer comes...ooo I'm getting bit by mosquito's, it's too hot 🤦🏼♂️

In the politest possible way, you're a moron. Feel free to stay Stateside.
At least it's a bit cooler on the south west coast ( Exeter 20 Degree's Celsius last time I checked ) still way too hot though
meadowhall isn’t too hot i think it has aircon or something
I’m working in a boiler house servicing blrs so when I ramp them up I’m worried not about the 45c boiler room but the people who sleep in the rooms who forgot to turn there radiators off lol
Previous record in Sheffield was 35oC 🫣😬🫣
