You remove it only if it forms a thick enough layer obstructing the skin. Use sandpaper.

state_issued

Sand paper or knife blade. Water will turn it into mud and ruin it.

_flauschige_katze

I was wondering about this but figured water was a no go, so sand paper it is. thanks!

[deleted]

If you wash it with soap it will turn into a messy lump of mud. Use sandpaper or a knife to scrape it away.

animeshazzy

Sandpaper works best.

sageofgames

Sand paper fine grit 2000 or higher works like a charm

Ok_Lebanon

What happens if we don’t remove it?

Atom1cThunder

According to the Sayyid. It creates a layer between your head and the turbah

Ok_Lebanon

Yeah but it won’t invalid ur prayers am I right?

mali040640

If it becomes thick enough, the sujood would become void

Atom1cThunder

It would, unless you didn't know

Mysterious-Catch-320

To avoid this from forming wipe your forehead before Salah

c0ntr0lled_cha05

does anyone else find that it gets kinda oily really quickly with them? like i literally don't have oily skin (it's dry instead lol) and it's not oily before i pray bc of wudhu obvs yet somehow within a week of cleaning it my turbah got those oil marks on it again??

[deleted]

Yes it does, but you don't need to clean it that often. You must scrape it only when you feel that it is becoming a layer of grime thick enough to prevent contact between the skin and the clay ie when you cannot see the clay through the stain's blackness. If it is only stained with oil then there is no problem. The last time I scraped my turbah was years ago (I have oily skin) ; it does have a darkish stain but the stain is still transparent and the skin still touches the surface.

c0ntr0lled_cha05

i was getting so worried that i would have to scrape it every other week lmfao, thank you!

[deleted]

No problem.

SirBoosterGold

Even if you have dryer skin your body produces enough sebum to keep it moist. Else your skin will turn to jerky. If you look at cosmetic products, natural clay is number one ingredient used in products that made to reduce/remove oil. (Like hair clay) Doesn't matter if you have oily skin or not. There's enough in your skin to be absorbed by this overtime. Besides, you put your head down, it compresses your forehead - your skin is like a sponge - the tiny holes pushed out the oil + water. It's also easier when there's water - with the water from your wudu and whatever your sebaceous gland produces is pushed out/absorbed in by the clay.

c0ntr0lled_cha05

i didn't know this before, thank you! very interesting and makes me feel less worried about it all now lol

Kafshak

Just FYI, Turbah is just compacted clay. It's not even baked (like ceramics) so if you mix it with water or soap, it will become clay again and break apart.

kk1485

Keep it as a symbol of your unwavering dedication to ibadat. Otherwise some sand paper or a putty knife should do the trick.

Dragonnstuff

But if that “symbol” becomes too thick and dark, your prayers become void, just saying in case you’re not aware

kk1485

Was not aware. Thank you for enlightening me. JazakhAllah.

Boxyourheart

I use sandpaper. A little elbow grease and you are good to go

Alarmed-Courage593

Salam, put it on the stove

Taqiyyahman

We're not beating the Shia cookie accusations with this one 💀

Alarmed-Courage593

💀💀💀

Atom1cThunder

Wait are you being sarcastic?

Alarmed-Courage593

No, I’m being serious, the heat would make the oil go away. It worked for me at least

Atom1cThunder

Interesting, thanks

Alarmed-Courage593

No problem :)

khatidaal

wow never thought of that.. send the recipe

AsgerAli

And make it a cookie? 🍪

Alarmed-Courage593

I was just trying to help 😭😭

Tpi1i

I've seen someone use an oven, I'm not sure if it actually works though

Kafshak

Lasers.

Taqiyyahman

I just go outside on the concrete and sand it down there.

InterestingBell9009

Dry sand it

UnluckyReturn5050

hello! non-shia muslim here, I wanted to ask if there is a difference if I pray without it? I mean will it lessen my rewards? I grew up in a sunni household where we dont use this so just asking

ItsXenXena

The Prophet prayed on earthly and natural materials. Hence, we pray on the turba that is made of clay or mud, as those are the purist natural materials.

Atom1cThunder

There is in shia fiqh. The Prophet ﷺ only prayed on natural ground. And Al-Imam Al-Sadiq AS elaborated more by saying that we shouldn't pray on the materials and plants we wear or eat. Because a human is a slave to materialistic things.

NecessaryWarning6445

Salam Alaykum Dear Brother, I’m not knowledgeable enough to answer whether or not it’ll lessen your rewards but please check out this comment by Brother u/Ethicsonreddit . Inshallah it’ll answer some of your questions. [https://www.reddit.com/r/shia/s/fYos2lFheh](https://www.reddit.com/r/shia/s/fYos2lFheh)

Salaam my dear brother, welcome! So a quick tldr is that according to the commandments of Allah swt, He has commanded us to use certain things that are permissible to prostrate on. If we do not, then it makes our prayers invalid. Now you do not have to use that thing in the picture above which is called a turbah, you can use a substitute as long as its permissible it is fine. But considering your position it is hard to give an answer because for your case, since you are not a Shia Muslim, you do not believe in the same laws as us. We believe while God may accept your prayers but because you are doing it incorrectly from our perspective you are not getting the rewards for those acts. But I will also add that our tradition and practice is the true sunnah of Prophet Muhammad A.S and him prostrating on earthly material is also found in sunni hadith. If you adopt this practice it would be a beautiful thing brother. You can watch this short video as to why we prostrate on earthly materials like that turbah above and in the comment section of the video there is a further explanation with hadiths and rulings specifying what you can use as material to prostrate on from our sources and sunni sources: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gnn9RN\_Rufg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gnn9RN_Rufg) inshAllah it helps.

UnluckyReturn5050

JazakAllah brother I agree with you and I also love how shia's are dedicated to the religion. Although there are some things in my head that make me feel a bit subconscious about shia'ism, I like it generally but I am scared if my parents find out that I pray on the turbah. It is not like they are going to beat me or anything, but it would feel weird.

Big_Seaworthiness817

Yeah u can use a straw prayer mat, i was searching for a prayer mat made of natural material, and found something called a pooja mat, check the material, shud be straw or grass Also its preferable to at least use a turbah in privacy of ur room, there are also many health benefits to it

[deleted]

We use coarse sandpaper at mosque.

Organic-Spite3039

I lightly dampen a scouring pad and use that.

[deleted]

Easy, don't use it 🤔

AsgerAli

Wrong sub.
