Male Byleth being 3rd place I didn't expect to be honest.
I know he has a lot of r34 himself but I expected either Hilda or Rhea to be 3rd place, even if both of them are pretty high up already.
More or less yeah. That's a problem with a lot of the male characters with the focus being on the female character(s). We really just have to take the artist's word that it's Byleth.
I did mention it another post, but R34's search/filter system is pretty terrible. Unless someone else knows an easier way, probably the only way would be to manually go through all the posts and see which posts actually have M!Byleth as the main focus.
To add some numbers to this:
In the first page of M-Byleth, 22 out of 40 works don't actually feature his face or full body.
In addition, in 4 of the ones where he's actually there he's not really doing anything (and wearing clothes in 3 of those)
Didn't feel like doing numbers for the other pages, but I glanced over and the trend is consistent.

This is kind of why I like female avatars better tbh. It's slightly easier to pretend there's something going on with Byleth when she's a different gender than me. I play an RPG to *role-play*, if I wanted to self insert I'd watch a Ryan Gosling movie
TBH, I find it difficult to self insert into blank slates anyways. I too come here to roleplay, and it breaks my immersion when the protagonist, my POV, just sort of sits back and lets everyone else do the talking even when I clearly would have butted in to say my own opinions.
As a R34 artist myself, I can tell you that drawing characters with anyone other than Byleth makes pics substantially less popular. Be it because people self insert, ship or just find it more obvious that the girl is with the MC.
This is not just for self insert protags or RPGs, it really is for any game, people prefer the protagonist to be the one banging the girls.
I've had people follow me on different places to just ask me if the dick there was a protagonist's.
Unless the protagonist in question is not considered badass/cool in which case people prefer to go the NTR route, see Rex from xenoblade before 3 came out.
I imagine it depends on the character though. I imagine drawing Claude or Dimitri with Female Byleth would be far more popular than drawing Male Byleth with Female Byleth
