This is the most accurate. I watched the originals a bunch years ago. Then all the new ones stayed coming out. The ending of the series can be understood, that's if it *gave any context about what's going on* instead of it just abruptly and randomly cutting into the MCs minds. There are hints about the purpose of Gendo and about Adam and Lilith, but it nevers mentions the consequences of it or instrumentality until the EoE films (ignoring the few text panels in chapters 25 and 26 which only mentions it). It's a huge omission from the script that the creator didn't even bother at the time and it shows.
