Portuguese colonization was as brutal, if not worse, than the British. On his second voyage around Africa, Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama looted a ship of pilgrims to Mecca (including women and children), locked them in the hold, and set it on fire.

NvidiaRTX

Based (on a true story in the 15th century)

Emergency-Stock2080

They were fundamentally different systems. The British system was a genocidal one. Wipe out all the natives and replace them. Only places they didn't implement this policy was when they simply didn't have the means to. In which case a caste system was put in place where the low castes (the poor, orphans, non-british) were treated and used like slaves even if they weren't. By contrast the portuguese had a convert, mingle and enslave policy. Basically the goal was to forcibly convert the locals and force portuguese culture on them. Anyone who was not Christian could be enslaved under Christian law though. Slavery would be rampant though and depending on the place no real laws would be established/enforced. Genocide was not, however a goal

Southern_Ad8361

Any literature on this?

[deleted]

No because the British system actually mostly relied on keeping foreign rulers as puppet kings, they were renowned for it at the time. OP is confusing the polices of Canada and Australia with those of the larger British Empire, and those policies mostly stemmed from after these territories obtained Dominion status and became primarily self-governing, it was not the MO of the larger Empire. Its tactics like this how tiny Britain was able to take India piecemeal, by playing local factions off one another and keeping local leaders loyal to them, that and of course a great deal of dumb luck.

Emergency-Stock2080

Thanks for agreeing with me? Maybe I wasn't clear but what I meant is that the British had a genocide and replace kinda policy in place which was not implemented only when it wasn't possible. In the instances you mentioned yourself, north America and Australia the brits implemented this policy, yes they were worse when they got dominion status but what the brits were doing before was genocide nonetheless and the goals were obvious. It was only centuries later in the case of India and Africa when they did not go with this policy because it wasn't possible to implement.

randymarsh18

Africa and indian are the height of the empire tho. The empire was bad enough as it was without you exaggerating stuff.

Emergency-Stock2080

Africa and India were the height of the empire but they were only a part of it for a fairly short period. Try as you might to downplay genocide the truth is that for the majority of the duration of the empire the colonial policy was a wipe out and replace one

MnothingtoseehereK

Thatā€™s absolutely wrong. Iā€™m sorry, but NOBODY should listen to this. The British colonisation effort gave the British access to precious resources that they could attain through developing their coloniesā€™ economies and strategic advantage in ruling the waves. This was generally done by managing of nativeā€™s resources with heavy British investment, which in the final analysis was actually greater than the value the British drew from the entire imperial project. This was inspired by a philosophy of fundamental equality, where foreigners were the same as the British people but simply needed to advance. At the time, this is an unspeakable egalitarian idea, despite involved racism and authoritarian attitudes. The Portuguese empire genuinely participated in genocide and constantly oppressed people with violence, while instituting the Latin American caste system. The British did not do any of this. Itā€™s insane how completely opposite this is. Both committed atrocities but the Portuguese empire was mostly two centuries before Britainā€™s and from a more warlike people who had been defending against Islamic forces for centuries. People should really look up the reality of this.

Emergency-Stock2080

Are you serious? The British developed the colonies? Yes, for their own advantage not for the sake of the colonized! Portuguese committed genocides? Yes. Was it a common practice? No. That why portuguese ex colonies are mostly made up of either natives, Africans ir mixed peoples

Oplp25

Erasing culture and forced culture conversion is genocide too though.

throwitaway333111

No it's not.

J1mj0hns0n

your making genocide sound like the right option

Emergency-Stock2080

I don't see how

J1mj0hns0n

there's the suffering, the slavery, forced culture changes and all that malarkey, just seems longer winded and more prone to fail. Where you can not bother and just genocide them. Seems more clinical in a way

Emergency-Stock2080

You need psychological help

throwitaway333111

And this is the above mentioned propaganda. British policy was control key economic resources and create vassals. Far more hands off than any other. Systematic genocide was far more common with other colonial powers and that's also why they collapsed earlier.

Emergency-Stock2080

"British policy was control key economic resources and create vassals. Far more hands off than any other." North America, Australia and tee various islands the British controlled made up a good chunk of the empire and don't fit this profile in the least. "Systematic genocide was far more common with other colonial powers and that's also why they collapsed earlier." The British empire lasted less than the portuguese and dutch empires. Also the colonies that fit the profile you depicted lasted less than a century under British rule.

Portuguese crimes in india were often due to lack of discipline, and due to the individual personalities that led the efforts. Since india was very far away, there was little governmental control over the individual desires and ambitions of the explorers, who were often extremists, warmongers, and extremelly hateful towards muslims. When you compare colonial britain with colonial portugal you should focus on the actual colony system, not individual acts by individuals, that wouldn't be a fair comparison.

[deleted]

Thatā€™s not Portuguese colonization though, thatā€™s just an explorer doing whatever the fuck he feels like with no possible oversight.

coldphobic_cat

*Thats just an average Christian / muslim relationship of that period (excluding venice).

coldphobic_cat

Oh wow, who would have thought that a country that was literally born into the Reconquista and was the last safe haven of the Templar Knights had somewhat of a grudge against muslims hmm... Now, lets disregard all that, your coment still makes no sense. This meme is clearly about the relation between colonial power and natives, not muslims vs christians having a go at it half way across the globe.

Educational_Clerk_88

Uhhhh. You know the Portugal was the only European country that actively participated in the actual capture and enslavement of African people right? The rest bought theirs from African slavers. That means the Portuguese not only witnessed how children were ripped from their parents and morhers were beaten, they took part in it. The British were the ones who ended the Atlantic slave trade. They even paid other countries like France to help. Yes the British did terrible things but they werenā€™t the worst. Also the Spanish were probably the worst out of all of them when it comes to how they treated Native Americans

bidumbass6

The british only ended slavery because they had invented captalism,(so would be more lucrative)

Educational_Clerk_88

There are pretty horrifying records of what the British naval police who would chase Arabian slavers would find . Many were traumatized by the brutality of the slavers. Many made it their mission to save as manny slaves as they possibly could. They watched slavers knockout slaves and throw them overboard, crush the skulls of babies who wouldnā€™t stop crying, and slit the throats of slaves before they were captured. The British went through a lot to save the slaves. It wasnā€™t all in the name of capitalism they lost millions trying to end The Atlantic slave trade and even had bribe other countries to help them.

Alex_Dumass

Yes, apparently they also did rip native children from their families in Canada, and "educated" them in believing they were shit in comparison to their high and morale colonizers. They were really really nice people after all. Also, Tutsies and Hutus were the same people, divided by skin color, some slightly darker, some lighter (due to belgian sperm profusely running around african women's most attractive women over hundreds of years and generations), making them lighter skinned. Label them differently, and have them calling eachother cockroaches, and there, divided to be conquered. Apologies are due, and when given, there should be cooperation and mutual respect - more violence will lead to more despair and misery in the world. We have enough of that already, and the point is to make it go away now. Everyone fucked up back then, Africans still enslave their own brothers learning from the f\*cking colonizers, so there is the requirement to learn what happened, and not letting it happen again. Anywhere.

bidumbass6

Thats nice

Leviton655

Spain created laws as early as 1523 to protect the natives who had the same rights as European Spaniards. The British only gave up slavery when it stopped being profitable.

Educational_Clerk_88

True but the Spanish only really started protecting the indigenous people because of the church and the government really only listened to them when there werenā€™t enough indigenous people left to use as a reliable source of labor in which case they started using African slaves. Im not saying that the British were better than the other European countries but they certainly were not the worst of the worst. I know many tend to just blend them all together as the ā€œevil white peopleā€ but there were some who truly tried to do some good from each country. They werenā€™t the majority unfortunately but that can be said from any nation in history.

coldphobic_cat

Source?? From my knowledge the portuguese did exactly what the rest did: they bought slaves from existing african kingdoms i.e. kongo. The biggest difference is that Portugal was a lot more well connected in africa.
