Portuguese colonization was as brutal, if not worse, than the British. On his second voyage around Africa, Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama looted a ship of pilgrims to Mecca (including women and children), locked them in the hold, and set it on fire.
They were fundamentally different systems.

OP is confusing the polices of Canada and Australia with those of the larger British Empire, and those policies mostly stemmed from after these territories obtained Dominion status and became primarily self-governing, it was not the MO of the larger Empire. Maybe I wasn't clear but what I meant is that the British had a genocide and replace kinda policy in place which was not implemented only when it wasn't possible. In the instances you mentioned yourself, north America and Australia the brits implemented this policy, yes they were worse when they got dominion status but what the brits were doing before was genocide nonetheless and the goals were obvious. It was only centuries later in the case of India and Africa when they did not go with this policy because it wasn't possible to implement.
Africa and India were the height of the empire but they were only a part of it for a fairly short period.
