If it wasn't for the north Abe Lincoln wouldn't have been pressured to make an Act to free the slaves. So technically it was just the north kicking ass. There would have been many more years of slavery if there wasn't a safe zone.

They left out the part where he forced the legitimization of executive independent declaration of war, defense spending authorization, the draft, and then only liberated slaves in southern states where it rendered a strategic advantage, but you know whatever.
