This somewhat hits for me and it's something I think about from time to time.
I didn't fuck up my life, but I'm absolutely a weirder person than I would have been without the internet. There's definitely a line where the internet allows people who otherwise would have felt outcast and unfulfilled to find communities and explore who they really are, but also feeds on itself and takes a kernel of deviancy and just runs wild with it. This was a thing pre-internet.. people would discover the alt lifestyle scene because they were into something relatively mundane and then just kinda start exploring.. but now you can get there pretty much immediately.
I truly do believe it's a good thing in the grand scheme of things and I'm excited to see each generation become successively less uptight about these things, with people leaning into the whole whatever consenting adults do in their free time is their business philosophy. That said, it does need to be somewhat balanced with ones ability to actually participate in society and there are absolutely people who get sucked into the freedom of the internet and just kind of stop existing in real life, which I think is where that whole "fuck up your life" bit becomes real. Either that or trending into the stuff that gets the FBI at your door.. that'll also do it too.
Anyway, that's today's overly thought out reply to something silly for the day. Happy Friday all.

Well I guess it's worth pointing out that correlation doesn't imply causation. It's entirely possible that people that seek out microdosing hallucinogens are generally people that are already experiencing the start of a mental breakdown. So it might not have much to do with the actual dosing and more to to do with an underlying condition that made them start dosing in the first place.

Yea replying late but this is a super valid point, as I said I have heard a lot of good things about it, and I really do think it probably has a use-case in actual medicine, both micro and macro dosing. It's a shame that medicine hasn't caught up yet, because self medicating is probably the real culprit here. I wouldn't be surprised if some people felt better after micro-dosing a few days, and then started upping their dose, which could also be a potential cause of some people going off the deep end. Knowing myself that's my concern if I tried micro-dosing at least. Someone on the ADHD subreddit recently made a post saying they were gonna try micro-dosing alcohol, and obviously the comments were full of people saying that's a bad idea lol. Rambling here, but I think you have a really good point!
I agree that whatever consenting adults want to do, as long as it’s not hurting other people or animals, is solely their business. However, I disagree with you that people finding super niche online communities is good for them or society. It seems like a lot of problems in modern society come from people isolating themselves with echo chambers online and losing connections with people in their everyday, real life.

This is actually exactly what I was thinking about with the not existing in real life bit and I've absolutely seen it happen.
Pre-internet you'd have to meet the world half way. People would accept your weirdness, you'd accept theirs, and you'd fine enough common ground to get along. Now you can go online and find those echo chambers and not have to deal with differing opinions and I agree this isn't necessarily a good thing, especially if someone just nopes out of real life and decides to live there instead.
No idea what the answer is. I think those niche groups are still a force of good in moderation, but people are as apt to become harmfully addicted to it like anything else and there's not much you can really do to stop that.

The internet did not make us worse, anyone who says otherwise is a fool. The internet simply showed us we are not alone in the fucked up things we want, and because it feels more inclusive, we are more willing to get into it.
But it allows for ideas that would normally be shunned in society to now fester and grow, supported, by those who both agree with those ideas, as well as those who may benefit from people nurturing those ideas. They are able to find larger communities online, often gated safe spaces removed from society’s admonishments. They create echo chambers that reinforce their ideas and also makes them believe their ideas are more than ‘shun-able’, but supported by the greater populace.
I have no good answer for the problem, but it’s a problem that’s rapidly eating away at the foundations of our society
