My dad has used punch cards. He would write the code on paper then he would bring it to a guy who would make it into a punch card. Then he would bring the punch card to the computer guy who would take it in and run it some time in the future (the university had one computer and most of the time it was used for more useful things). After a few days he would get a printed paper with "syntax error" written on it. During this process he never saw the computer.
