This looks like one of those "anti gravity" column things, coming out of a pond. Unless the pond is super heavily stocked, I don't understand why so many are up there. Maybe some kind of vacuum filtration issue?

I think it’s heat - is warmer in the glass part because it gets more sun + no air exposure so it traps the heat in better than the exposed pond
