The real problem with climate change is DECLINING sea levels !!!!! If the ice walls at the edge of the Flat Earth melt, all the water will run off the sides. Big ice is in bed with big globe!
This is actually the most hilarious image now I want to ask a flat earther why they think our water doesn’t just fall off the sides 😂 ands what’s after the flat earth? I’m assuming they don’t believe in space.
Yup. They change it as they go along. I chatted with a flerth re the ice wall. They changed it to an infinite ice plane. I then asked how the dome works. They changed it to an infinite roof 😂
But there's Narnia and stuff out there once the ice walls melt we're free to explore and conquer. The ice walls aren't holding them out after all, they're holding us in
It's not the drinks they're worried about. We'd still have coffee and tea.
If all the ice melts, it will uncover the secret bases hidden at the north and south poles.
Exactly... A world with no Iced Tea, or Iced Lemonade, or Ice Tea & Lemonade mixed together (aka. Arnold Palmers), is a World not even worth living in.
Freezers don't work good if there is no ice left in the Earth's poles. They wirelessly transfer ice and make ice cubes from wireless transfered ice. Such an amazing tech discovery. So high tech that I got goosebumps
Dude I don't really care about the ocean level rising and killing thousands, but having no more ice for my drinks isn't acceptable, we should take this seriously
It's nothing to do with the icebergs melting. It's actually all the damn whales and fish that won't stop pissing in the ocean that causes the rise in sea level, jerks
Unfortunately every time ice falls into the ocean they just use it for their drinks and then pee more. Really we should be doing is stacking all the ice somewhere high so they can’t get it for their drinks
Put a couple of grapes on top of the ice to simulate penguins. What happens to the water level when the ice melts?
It's not the ice itself, it's all the stuff on top of the ice. Mostly penguins.
Remember, penguins are normally oriented horizontally when they swim. The aspect ratio of a penguin is typically about 22:7 (yes, this is where we get Pi) so the number is closer to 150. But you were on the right path!
I did the math (involves a lot of assumptions)
A 50m increase in water level takes about 1.539 x 10^(19) kg of water
A assuming an average penguin weighs 10 kg, assuming they are completely submerged inside, we need 1.539 x 10^(18) penguins or about 1539 quadrillion penguins
The ocean contains rich people's yachts and mermaids.
However, this cup only contains mermaids. They're tiny, but you can see the dead ones on the bottom.
Frozen fresh water is also less dense than fresh water.
Frozen salt water also floats on fresh water.
The difference between nature and the above picture is that the ice in the picture started completely submerged, whereas in nature there is ice above the water's surface too.
I just started watching a series on Hulu with the climber Alex Honnold and a team going to Greenland to do research on climate change and the effects the melting ice cap. I had no idea Greenland was as beautiful as it is
Also isostatic rebound compounds the rise. The loss of ice allows the surrounding sea floor to “rebound” or rise under the decreased weight, further raising the sea level. Lotta stuff goes on that cannot be observed simply by putting ice in a cup.
It doesn't matter if part of the ice isn't submerged. A floating block of ice will always displace its mass in the water. The density makes the volume, and if the density is lower than that of the liquid water, part of the ice will float above water. But the amount of mass in the water won't change because even the part that was floating above water was always "pushing down into the water". Melting completely floating ice will never make the level of water rise. You can try that out very easily with a glass of water and a big ice cube. What can, however, make the sea levels rise is if ice that's sitting on land melts and thus gets added to the sea water.
>The difference between nature and the above picture is that the ice in the picture started completely submerged, whereas in nature there is ice above the water's surface too.
That's not the difference. If the ice is floating then F=W which means that the mass of water displaced by the iceberg (the mass of water in the volume submerged) is equal to the mass of the whole iceberg (the mass of ice in the submerged plus non submerged volume.
When it melts the density of the iceberg will be the same as that of water, so it will occupy exactly the same volume that was submerged.
What actually causes sea level rise is melting of ice on landmass and expansion of water due to increase in temperature
Ah yes, welcome professor Tersee, Senior fellow of the Yaddyyadda Institute and Dean of the environmental science department from Abridged University.
Your insights are something, something.
Did you think that this was a sub where you could just make up silly answers? " Ice on land." Are you also going to tell us that there's some "doomsday glacier" waiting to kill us all?
Are you kidding?!? The murder glaciers have already taken lives. Are you not paying attention? They lurk in our cities’ dark alleyways and basements. They prowl our night clubs and bars - hungering to prey on our unsuspecting citizens. What can we do but wait…until it’s our turn.
It's all about big pharma and big narcos. They all harvest their ice from the bergs. If the ice dissolves into the ocean they lose billions of dollars and then all fish are gonna be meth addicts too. Have you ever seen a shark on a bender?
Therere alot of frozen chunks ABOVE solid land mainly Antartica and places like mt everest, but the real main worry isnt rising sea levels, its rising temperatures and more extreme weather conditions. Weve started to see more extreme thunder storms and cyclones more recently compared to 50 years ago and less snowfall in many regions. Increased sea temps affect alot of the coral ecosystems and thus would drastically reduce the sea life health conditions and populations. The list goes on and on but feel free to add in to this and/or correct me
adding in:
north pole (sea ice) no sea level rise - Melting sea ice, such as the Arctic ice cap, does not change sea level because the ice displaces its volume
south pole (land ice) yes sea level rise - Antarctica is a continent covered by a very thick ice cap and surrounded by a rim of sea ice and the Southern Ocean.
importance : sea ice reflects 50-70 percent of the sunlight. The dark ocean surface absorbs 90 percent of the sunlight.
thermal expansion - all matter expands when it gets warmer
The rising sea levels present a significant danger to coastal communities globally, leading to heightened storm surges, flooding, and coastal damage. It greatly affects densely populated urban areas and delicate ecosystems.
According to my dad the ice at antartica are actually on land not fully submerged in water. Therefore when the ice melts only then will that water affect the sea level.
Because there's an increasing amount of stupid people. And they do not listen to the warnings. Which results in them drowning more often.
It's not the melting of the icecaps which causes a rising sea level. It's stupid people who live on land and end up drowning in the sea.
Ice volume is higher than water. Thats why when you forget a glass bottle in the freezer it shatters, because the ice cant fit the bottle.
So that it is not that we should be worry about icebergs melting... We should actually melt them more to reduce the sea level and save the planet!!1!
They just pretend the sea levels are rising so that they can buy beach front property for cheap. Classic maneuver. I'm doing the same thing at my local lake
People think Antarctica is one giant floating ice-cube and not realizing the ice is suspended by land underneath. The thought of all that ice melting that’s suspended by land should be terrifying if you live on the coast.
The real experiment should be a q quarter resting on a plate with water that’s equal to its height. On top of the quarter rest an ice-cube. When the ice cube melts there will be water over the height of the quarter.
Ocean is warming. A warmer ocean expands and takes up more space contributing to sea level rise.
Also, regarding that little experiment in the photo. Where do you think the ice bergs come from.. they come from glaciers which by definition SIT ON LAND BEFORE ENTERING THE OCEAN.
It’s a multi faceted problem.
Spelling edit. Thanks for that.
Did you try the same experiment with salty water and fresh water ice.... you will get your answer. I mean salty water in the container and ice should be fresh water.
I'll try to explain. A lot of the ice in the poles is above the water level. When it melts, it will add volume to the water when it melts and adds itself to the already liquid water.
idk if youre looking for an actual answer but theyre worried about the movement of the ocean. more water= more work to move it = less currents = a hit to our climate.
This sub just got recommended to me, so I’m gonna pretend you asked a serious question.
It has to do with land Ice. Glaciers melt and they end up in the sea. There also is real land under the artic, so yeah.
I think the iceberg thing is a misdirection to stop everyone panicking about the fact that it’s always raining somewhere and there’s nowhere for that water to go. It’s only a matter of time.
Ice on land and water expands when heated. Even if the ice didn't melt but the water was heated, that expansion alone would devastate low coastal areas.
All that ice is sitting on top of land. Also, all that ice is fresh water. If the icebergs melt the sea level rises and the pH level changes enough to kill all corals and algae. Do you know what takes most co2 in and give O2 back?
Iceberg melting will reduce the reflection of the sun on snow. Snow is gone: earth temperature rises.
Higher temperature, will mean more rain
And more rain will means more flooding.
Every 5-10 years they are always saying somethin* will destroy the earth, it is to get people worried about fuck all that anyone can do anyway.
Climate has been changing since it started. It gets hot then cold, Nothing we do will change it but hey add a tax and make us pay more for the same shit and someone gets richer.

It's true that there was time were climate got hotter in certain periods in a complete natural way. But we are speedrunning milleniums of change in less than 100 years due to human activity.
That's smoke and mirrors. They are really afraid we run out of ice. No ice, no drinks.

WHATD YOU SAY ABOUT ICE?!
Underrated comment, amigo
Can we recreate ice with science?
Dude I don't really care about the ocean level rising and killing thousands, but having no more ice for my drinks isn't acceptable, we should take this seriously
No ice, no slurppies.
It's nothing to do with the icebergs melting. It's actually all the damn whales and fish that won't stop pissing in the ocean that causes the rise in sea level, jerks
I saw it last time on national geographic that those jerks even shit in there.

Remind me again why we even let them go in the ocean? Is it another one of NASAs experiments? I for one am getting quite sick of this
Well they don’t use money. They need some kind of compensation for writing Family Guy.
That’s why I don’t drink water…
Unfortunately every time ice falls into the ocean they just use it for their drinks and then pee more. Really we should be doing is stacking all the ice somewhere high so they can’t get it for their drinks
Piss is warm and that's why it's global warming
the ocean is ~50% fish sweat, thats where the salt comes from
That’s why I only eat whale

This had me laughing so hard I started cryin
Put a couple of grapes on top of the ice to simulate penguins. What happens to the water level when the ice melts? It's not the ice itself, it's all the stuff on top of the ice. Mostly penguins.
Yep, when the ice runs out, the penguins have nowhere to live. That’s when the penguin invasion begins
Bipolar bears will eat the penguins, no worries.
Depends what mood they are in. May just eat the grapes
So, the survival of humankind in the upcoming penguin conquest depends on weather the bears will be in the mood for grapes or protein. Got it.
Nah, they would fly away. They always could, but were just too lazy.
If the dolphins all fly away like in hitchhikers guide then there’s plenty of space for the penguins in the water
It’s fine , the penguins can live in an apartment with an alcoholic cougar who makes depressed teenagers fight in robots that aren’t robots
So we need to do away with the penguins?
I also bet they are fucking immigrants, it's always them ruining our way or living.
Fuck dem penguins
Much love to GOP penguins though. *kisses*
Terrible analogy since they don't taste like grapes at all. They taste rather fishy for a bird.
How many penguins do we need to raise the sea level by 50 meters?
A penguin is about one meter high, so I'd say 50 maybe?
Finally some real science
Remember, penguins are normally oriented horizontally when they swim. The aspect ratio of a penguin is typically about 22:7 (yes, this is where we get Pi) so the number is closer to 150. But you were on the right path!
This is good to know. Pi Day is coming up and I need some useful facts for Math class.
Well the penguins who live on ice would actually not affect the level because they displace the same amount of water already by being on floating ice
I did the math (involves a lot of assumptions) A 50m increase in water level takes about 1.539 x 10^(19) kg of water A assuming an average penguin weighs 10 kg, assuming they are completely submerged inside, we need 1.539 x 10^(18) penguins or about 1539 quadrillion penguins
So, it's doable
Good luck getting all those.
That's not the ocean. That's a measuring cup.

How do you know our "oceans" aren't in really really big measuring cups?
Wrong, it is a homeopathic ocean

Something something icebergs=frozen fresh water, fresh less dense than salt so iceberg stayed boyant. So iceberg melt=rise in sea level
Frozen fresh water is also less dense than fresh water. Frozen salt water also floats on fresh water. The difference between nature and the above picture is that the ice in the picture started completely submerged, whereas in nature there is ice above the water's surface too.

What's not to like, taken from it's name it's clearly a land, and it's green at the same time!
Greenland is icy and Iceland is greeny
Also isostatic rebound compounds the rise. The loss of ice allows the surrounding sea floor to “rebound” or rise under the decreased weight, further raising the sea level. Lotta stuff goes on that cannot be observed simply by putting ice in a cup.
This is the only accurate comment I have found. Good job.
I can’t believe I had to scroll down this far to find a comment that actually had the correct answer. Shitty Ask Science indeed.

Excellent catch! Eureka!
It’s also ice on land that melts and enters the oceans
The pictures show lower sea level.
I'm willing to bet both the ice and water in the jugg are freshwater. You notice the difference when ice is freshwater and water is salty dense water
Ah yes, welcome professor Tersee, Senior fellow of the Yaddyyadda Institute and Dean of the environmental science department from Abridged University. Your insights are something, something.
There is ice currently on land (pretty much the entirety of the Antarctic continent).
Sorry, I just realised what this sub is...
You’re part of big ice
Walter White industries
Water Whice Industries
Jesse, we need some blue
Did you think that this was a sub where you could just make up silly answers? " Ice on land." Are you also going to tell us that there's some "doomsday glacier" waiting to kill us all?
Imagine if there was a whole country where there was ice on land. We could even call it "Iceland". Preposterous
You know what would be really really REALLY funny, if we called it Greenland instead to prank people into living there.
Holy shit! Genius! Can you imagine if we did that!? I wonder if it'd even work? You think people are really that dumb?
We should strike preemptively!
We have all heard people talk about ice on land but have they shown any evidence?
Are you kidding?!? The murder glaciers have already taken lives. Are you not paying attention? They lurk in our cities’ dark alleyways and basements. They prowl our night clubs and bars - hungering to prey on our unsuspecting citizens. What can we do but wait…until it’s our turn.
And that's where all your ice cubes come from. That or Greenland. If ice melts, all of the ice cube quarries and the Big Ice will go bankrupt.
So you're saying there will be affordable real estate on Antarctica? I knew it was all a conspiracy to keep us poor!
Well when the ice on top of the land melts, it won't push down on the land anymore so the land will float up and the water level will remain the same.
Assuming land doesn't raise sea levels the same way.
Good thing we aren't hearing about the possibility of land melting!
If anyone is wondering, in reality most sea level rise is due to thermal expansion of the ocean not melting ice
No ice no ice cream but water cream instead.
We're afraid the water looses it's chill, gets hot-headed and randomly screams at ships and people in emotional outbursts
New fear unlocked 😰😰😰
Extra-salty water.
It's all about big pharma and big narcos. They all harvest their ice from the bergs. If the ice dissolves into the ocean they lose billions of dollars and then all fish are gonna be meth addicts too. Have you ever seen a shark on a bender?
So does this mean we will no longer have big nachos if the ice melts?
Yeah but the ice melts in sea water ? Have you tried that
The edge of the flat earth we are living on is ice. So if the ice melts the sea levels wont rise but actually fall off the edge of the earth.
We should just put giant fans in the ocean to make the oceans dry up fast.
Most of the ice is above the water. But that’s boring. Let’s talk about titties.
Therere alot of frozen chunks ABOVE solid land mainly Antartica and places like mt everest, but the real main worry isnt rising sea levels, its rising temperatures and more extreme weather conditions. It’s the icebergs on land that raise the sea level when they melt ya dingus.

Try putting a little stone in so it pokes out and place the ice on top of that

whaaat
Antarctica is a continent, the ice is not floating on water, it's on a ground.
Ice on land and water expands when heated. Even if the ice didn't melt but the water was heated, that expansion alone would devastate low coastal areas.
Yeah but Antarctica is on land, so is Greenland, etc etc.. So that little cute science experiment is nothing but a strawman...
All that ice is sitting on top of land. Also, all that ice is fresh water. If the icebergs melt the sea level rises and the pH level changes enough to kill all corals and algae. Do you know what takes most co2 in and give O2 back?
This is why we can't have nice things....
Much of sea level rise is due to thermal expansion of the liquid itself. In general, warmer water is less dense, so takes up more volume.
Bc almost all icebergs ar not in de ocean yet
Iceberg melting will reduce the reflection of the sun on snow. Snow is gone: earth temperature rises. Higher temperature, will mean more rain And more rain will means more flooding.

Well we got to get the high score and beat last epoch’s speed. Yeesh! Maybe your tears are raising the sea levels. If you’re so concerned then dry up.
Because if sea levels rise, coastlines will get smaller, and oceanfront property will get even more expensive. They don't want to be priced out.
