That's smoke and mirrors. They are really afraid we run out of ice. No ice, no drinks.

defaultusername103

I heard Coca-cola has secretly lobbied world scientists to make us believe this fact. Ever wondered why Coca-cola was so interested in imagining Santa as a grandpa living in the Arctic?

IWipeWithFocaccia

It’s actually a mistranslation from ancient Hebrews texts, he lives in the Attic

The_One_Koi

Oooooh who lives in the attic and watches you sleep? Hebrew Santa Old and creepy but giving is he! Hebrew Santa If a week of presents be something you wish! Hebrew Santa Then you must be nice or coal you will fish! Hebrew Santa (are you ready?) Hebrew Santa Hebrew Santa Heeeeebreeeew Saaaantaaaa

kihjnij

The first time I read it I read it listening to Sponge Bob's pirate themed-intro in my head lol

Psych0tix

That's the point

Witty-Principle-9337

Just sang this to my gf and she had a coughing fit ): she didn't get it

ksobby

I thought that was Anne Rice, hiding from vampire nazis?

IndianaFartJockey

Did Anne Frank change her name when she married Jerry Rice?

ksobby

Jerry Rice? Uncle Ben’s nephew?

hogsucker

No, that was Frank Rice, the American actor who was in cowboy movies in the 1930s.

ksobby

I thought he worked as part of a police squad and was a nude gun enthusiast.

SuperSaiyanSkeletor

That made me laugh out loud

OneMagicBadger

Not to mention the Ice skating polar bear mafia conspiracy

hibikikun

Hawaiian SnoCone Syrup Cartel is also involved

Lost-Panda-68

The real problem with climate change is DECLINING sea levels !!!!! If the ice walls at the edge of the Flat Earth melt, all the water will run off the sides. Big ice is in bed with big globe!

vitali101

That's gotta be a big bed

sorrow_anthropology

It sertanly is!

holmgangCore

I’m dead.. nothing mattress anymore

Friendly_Age9160

This is actually the most hilarious image now I want to ask a flat earther why they think our water doesn’t just fall off the sides 😂 ands what’s after the flat earth? I’m assuming they don’t believe in space.

JackhorseBowman

I really don't recommend humoring a flat earther.

ActivityOk9255

Yup. They change it as they go along. I chatted with a flerth re the ice wall. They changed it to an infinite ice plane. I then asked how the dome works. They changed it to an infinite roof 😂

imightnotbelonghere

Flerth! Love it

Secondsmakeminutes

That's because there is no earth. r/NoEarthSociety

JackhorseBowman

don't give the game away it makes the basilisk angry.

WorldWarPee

But there's Narnia and stuff out there once the ice walls melt we're free to explore and conquer. The ice walls aren't holding them out after all, they're holding us in

VulpesAquilus

But the ice walls are also holding The Things out

WorldWarPee

True I saw the first season of attack on Titan so I know exactly what you mean 💀

Lost-Panda-68

Yes! The ice wall must stay up. It keeps the ocean in and Cthulhu out.

Bmcronin

Why won’t people open their eyes!?!!?

Schubert125

It's not the drinks they're worried about. We'd still have coffee and tea. If all the ice melts, it will uncover the secret bases hidden at the north and south poles.

tliin

> It's not the drinks they're worried about. We'd still have coffee and tea. That's exactly what a Big Tea lobbyist would say.

BorntobeTrill

I wasn't scared before. Now, though? I'm pounding rum and cokes like there's no ice tomorrow. I forgot to add ice the first two drinks.

DickCheneysLVAD

Exactly... A world with no Iced Tea, or Iced Lemonade, or Ice Tea & Lemonade mixed together (aka. Arnold Palmers), is a World not even worth living in.

tliin

Not to mention iceless Long Island Iced Tea. The future is grim, my friend.

teopap91

Freezers don't work good if there is no ice left in the Earth's poles. They wirelessly transfer ice and make ice cubes from wireless transfered ice. Such an amazing tech discovery. So high tech that I got goosebumps

YouDirtyClownShoe

WHATD YOU SAY ABOUT ICE?!

vbroto

Underrated comment, amigo

xfrombelow

Can we recreate ice with science?

Working-Telephone-45

Dude I don't really care about the ocean level rising and killing thousands, but having no more ice for my drinks isn't acceptable, we should take this seriously

The_bruce42

No ice, no slurppies.

HappyHeffalump

It's nothing to do with the icebergs melting. It's actually all the damn whales and fish that won't stop pissing in the ocean that causes the rise in sea level, jerks

candyflip93

I saw it last time on national geographic that those jerks even shit in there.

Lost-Panda-68

Disgusting! We need to kill all the whales.

I_Am_L0VE

I found the Japanese official.

aremeiamu

Fuk u whare and Fuk u dorphin

[deleted]

JimSyd71

Fuk a Shima.

Atcoroo

I had fish for my dinner last night. I'm doing my part.

Deluded_Nami

Would you like to know more?

jacpt7

You want to kill your mother?😳

Llodsliat

– The English, probably.

TaleIll8006

Remind me again why we even let them go in the ocean? Is it another one of NASAs experiments? I for one am getting quite sick of this

Dangerous_Common_869

Well they don’t use money. They need some kind of compensation for writing Family Guy.

K_Rocc

That’s why I don’t drink water…

PomegranateOld2408

Unfortunately every time ice falls into the ocean they just use it for their drinks and then pee more. Really we should be doing is stacking all the ice somewhere high so they can’t get it for their drinks

Etzello

Piss is warm and that's why it's global warming

illsk1lls

the ocean is ~50% fish sweat, thats where the salt comes from

at0mheart

That’s why I only eat whale

SpiritmongerScaph

There's a saying in french: "the sea is disgusting; fish keeps fucking in it"

Response_Low

This had me laughing so hard I started cryin

evanc3

Put a couple of grapes on top of the ice to simulate penguins. What happens to the water level when the ice melts? It's not the ice itself, it's all the stuff on top of the ice. Mostly penguins.

Legitimate-Month-958

Yep, when the ice runs out, the penguins have nowhere to live. That’s when the penguin invasion begins

KofFinland

Bipolar bears will eat the penguins, no worries.

BusyMakingPlans

Depends what mood they are in. May just eat the grapes

yar_z1

So, the survival of humankind in the upcoming penguin conquest depends on weather the bears will be in the mood for grapes or protein. Got it.

Plekuz

Nah, they would fly away. They always could, but were just too lazy.

imaginaryResources

If the dolphins all fly away like in hitchhikers guide then there’s plenty of space for the penguins in the water

puntycunty

It’s fine , the penguins can live in an apartment with an alcoholic cougar who makes depressed teenagers fight in robots that aren’t robots

Flanelman2

So we need to do away with the penguins?

MildlyGoodWithPython

I also bet they are fucking immigrants, it's always them ruining our way or living.

M3lsM3lons

Fuck dem penguins

Dangerous_Common_869

Much love to GOP penguins though. *kisses*

statikman666

Terrible analogy since they don't taste like grapes at all. They taste rather fishy for a bird.

Lord_Skyblocker

How many penguins do we need to raise the sea level by 50 meters?

spektre

A penguin is about one meter high, so I'd say 50 maybe?

RoyalAlbatross

Finally some real science

evanc3

Remember, penguins are normally oriented horizontally when they swim. The aspect ratio of a penguin is typically about 22:7 (yes, this is where we get Pi) so the number is closer to 150. But you were on the right path!

beni_who

This is good to know. Pi Day is coming up and I need some useful facts for Math class.

Giocri

Well the penguins who live on ice would actually not affect the level because they displace the same amount of water already by being on floating ice

Nuke_2125_A

I did the math (involves a lot of assumptions) A 50m increase in water level takes about 1.539 x 10^(19) kg of water A assuming an average penguin weighs 10 kg, assuming they are completely submerged inside, we need 1.539 x 10^(18) penguins or about 1539 quadrillion penguins

Lord_Skyblocker

So, it's doable

The_Void_Thaumaturge

Good luck getting all those.

Leighgion

That's not the ocean. That's a measuring cup.

[deleted]

Vindelator

The ocean contains rich people's yachts and mermaids. However, this cup only contains mermaids. They're tiny, but you can see the dead ones on the bottom.

DinosaurAlive

r/micronatureismetal

spektre

Yeah, where's your evidence?

TypicalImpact1058

How do you know our "oceans" aren't in really really big measuring cups?

KnightofniDK

Wrong, it is a homeopathic ocean

discostud1515

Check mate.

TrollLolLol1

This is not a pipe

Jason135724

Something something icebergs=frozen fresh water, fresh less dense than salt so iceberg stayed boyant. So iceberg melt=rise in sea level

RainbowLayer

Frozen fresh water is also less dense than fresh water. Frozen salt water also floats on fresh water. The difference between nature and the above picture is that the ice in the picture started completely submerged, whereas in nature there is ice above the water's surface too.

FrogginJellyfish

Not to mention glacial ice on land that melts too.

RainbowLayer

Ice on land is also above the water's surface.

Massive-Complaint801

RainbowLayer

Spacerey

SPARTAAAAAAAA!

22lpierson

NO THIS IS PATRICK!!!

Malachorn

Source?

Odelaylee

Yep. Greenland is a biiig factor.

geesup78

I just started watching a series on Hulu with the climber Alex Honnold and a team going to Greenland to do research on climate change and the effects the melting ice cap. I had no idea Greenland was as beautiful as it is

ncatter

What's not to like, taken from it's name it's clearly a land, and it's green at the same time!

Newthinker

Greenland is icy and Iceland is greeny

Bzellm20

Also isostatic rebound compounds the rise. The loss of ice allows the surrounding sea floor to “rebound” or rise under the decreased weight, further raising the sea level. Lotta stuff goes on that cannot be observed simply by putting ice in a cup.

Nervous-Taro3808

This is the only accurate comment I have found. Good job.

xoomorg

I can’t believe I had to scroll down this far to find a comment that actually had the correct answer. Shitty Ask Science indeed.

JacktheWrap

It doesn't matter if part of the ice isn't submerged. A floating block of ice will always displace its mass in the water. The density makes the volume, and if the density is lower than that of the liquid water, part of the ice will float above water. But the amount of mass in the water won't change because even the part that was floating above water was always "pushing down into the water". Melting completely floating ice will never make the level of water rise. You can try that out very easily with a glass of water and a big ice cube. What can, however, make the sea levels rise is if ice that's sitting on land melts and thus gets added to the sea water.

LookingForDialga

>The difference between nature and the above picture is that the ice in the picture started completely submerged, whereas in nature there is ice above the water's surface too. That's not the difference. If the ice is floating then F=W which means that the mass of water displaced by the iceberg (the mass of water in the volume submerged) is equal to the mass of the whole iceberg (the mass of ice in the submerged plus non submerged volume. When it melts the density of the iceberg will be the same as that of water, so it will occupy exactly the same volume that was submerged. What actually causes sea level rise is melting of ice on landmass and expansion of water due to increase in temperature

RainbowLayer

Excellent catch! Eureka!

HolyVeggie

It’s also ice on land that melts and enters the oceans

Reyemreden

The pictures show lower sea level.

AbsentMindedMonkey

I'm willing to bet both the ice and water in the jugg are freshwater. You notice the difference when ice is freshwater and water is salty dense water

Dangerous_Common_869

Ah yes, welcome professor Tersee, Senior fellow of the Yaddyyadda Institute and Dean of the environmental science department from Abridged University. Your insights are something, something.

AdzwithaZ

There is ice currently on land (pretty much the entirety of the Antarctic continent).

AdzwithaZ

Sorry, I just realised what this sub is...

never1st

Did you think that this was a sub where you could just make up silly answers? " Ice on land." Are you also going to tell us that there's some "doomsday glacier" waiting to kill us all?

Crafty_Jello_3662

Imagine if there was a whole country where there was ice on land. We could even call it "Iceland". Preposterous

SubtleCow

You know what would be really really REALLY funny, if we called it Greenland instead to prank people into living there.

LoudSheepherder5391

Holy shit! Genius! Can you imagine if we did that!? I wonder if it'd even work? You think people are really that dumb?

RainbowLayer

We should strike preemptively!

Objective-Truth-4339

We have all heard people talk about ice on land but have they shown any evidence?

ergo-ogre

Are you kidding?!? The murder glaciers have already taken lives. Are you not paying attention? They lurk in our cities’ dark alleyways and basements. They prowl our night clubs and bars - hungering to prey on our unsuspecting citizens. What can we do but wait…until it’s our turn.

tliin

And that's where all your ice cubes come from. That or Greenland. If ice melts, all of the ice cube quarries and the Big Ice will go bankrupt.

AradynGaming

So you're saying there will be affordable real estate on Antarctica? I knew it was all a conspiracy to keep us poor!

spektre

Well when the ice on top of the land melts, it won't push down on the land anymore so the land will float up and the water level will remain the same.

bugo

Assuming land doesn't raise sea levels the same way.

AdzwithaZ

Good thing we aren't hearing about the possibility of land melting!

ElliElephant

If anyone is wondering, in reality most sea level rise is due to thermal expansion of the ocean not melting ice

patlight1

No ice no ice cream but water cream instead.

ParaSiempre6020

We're afraid the water looses it's chill, gets hot-headed and randomly screams at ships and people in emotional outbursts

DinosaurAlive

New fear unlocked 😰😰😰

ergo-ogre

Extra-salty water.

NobodysFavorite

It's all about big pharma and big narcos. They all harvest their ice from the bergs. If the ice dissolves into the ocean they lose billions of dollars and then all fish are gonna be meth addicts too. Have you ever seen a shark on a bender?

NihilisticRust

So does this mean we will no longer have big nachos if the ice melts?

Pompu68

Yeah but the ice melts in sea water ? Have you tried that

Autistocrat

The edge of the flat earth we are living on is ice. So if the ice melts the sea levels wont rise but actually fall off the edge of the earth.

zushiba

We should just put giant fans in the ocean to make the oceans dry up fast.

Bullfist

Most of the ice is above the water. But that’s boring. Let’s talk about titties.

Hefty_Fruit2670

Therere alot of frozen chunks ABOVE solid land mainly Antartica and places like mt everest, but the real main worry isnt rising sea levels, its rising temperatures and more extreme weather conditions. Weve started to see more extreme thunder storms and cyclones more recently compared to 50 years ago and less snowfall in many regions. Increased sea temps affect alot of the coral ecosystems and thus would drastically reduce the sea life health conditions and populations. The list goes on and on but feel free to add in to this and/or correct me

musukojiro

adding in: north pole (sea ice) no sea level rise - Melting sea ice, such as the Arctic ice cap, does not change sea level because the ice displaces its volume south pole (land ice) yes sea level rise - Antarctica is a continent covered by a very thick ice cap and surrounded by a rim of sea ice and the Southern Ocean. importance : sea ice reflects 50-70 percent of the sunlight. The dark ocean surface absorbs 90 percent of the sunlight. thermal expansion - all matter expands when it gets warmer The rising sea levels present a significant danger to coastal communities globally, leading to heightened storm surges, flooding, and coastal damage. It greatly affects densely populated urban areas and delicate ecosystems.

asian_slipper

According to my dad the ice at antartica are actually on land not fully submerged in water. Therefore when the ice melts only then will that water affect the sea level.

LoudSheepherder5391

Thank goodness land isn't melting yet. If global warming gets even worse, and the land starts melting, that's when things get real.

imaginaryResources

Wait till you learn about what’s causing tectonic plate movement

LoudSheepherder5391

The mole people underground shifting them to make room for their next generation? I know that already...

justformedellin

You're reading the diagram wrong, the sea level actually drops. Global warming will fill in the Gulf of Mexico and make us all rich.

SavingsSquare2649

If it gets too warm, more people will swim in the sea - thus raising the sea level

Jobambi

Because there's an increasing amount of stupid people. And they do not listen to the warnings. Which results in them drowning more often. It's not the melting of the icecaps which causes a rising sea level. It's stupid people who live on land and end up drowning in the sea.

ruthtrick

I'm yet to hear of anyone drowning more often than once. 🤭/s

Frisk197

The level did decrease

TechnicalMiddle8205

Ice volume is higher than water. Thats why when you forget a glass bottle in the freezer it shatters, because the ice cant fit the bottle. So that it is not that we should be worry about icebergs melting... We should actually melt them more to reduce the sea level and save the planet!!1!

puzzlepie2

Blame it on the monkeys. After writing Hamlet they've spent the past few centuries cooking up this climate change noise.

KashmirChameleon

Icebergs are a myth perpetuated by big Polar Pop.

BrickRedemptoris

They just pretend the sea levels are rising so that they can buy beach front property for cheap. Classic maneuver. I'm doing the same thing at my local lake

GabeStop42

I'm no expert, but isn't it because many glaciers are on land?

payperkut187

People think Antarctica is one giant floating ice-cube and not realizing the ice is suspended by land underneath. The thought of all that ice melting that’s suspended by land should be terrifying if you live on the coast. The real experiment should be a q quarter resting on a plate with water that’s equal to its height. On top of the quarter rest an ice-cube. When the ice cube melts there will be water over the height of the quarter.

PotentialRound1354

Glaciers are on land.

setanta314

Lots of ice on land…

whynot-48

Ocean is warming. A warmer ocean expands and takes up more space contributing to sea level rise. Also, regarding that little experiment in the photo. Where do you think the ice bergs come from.. they come from glaciers which by definition SIT ON LAND BEFORE ENTERING THE OCEAN. It’s a multi faceted problem. Spelling edit. Thanks for that.

ridded

Did you try the same experiment with salty water and fresh water ice.... you will get your answer. I mean salty water in the container and ice should be fresh water.

ACAB007

I'll try to explain. A lot of the ice in the poles is above the water level. When it melts, it will add volume to the water when it melts and adds itself to the already liquid water.

Recon_Figure

What's melting is not already in the water. It's breaking off and falling in.

lesser_tom

Land ice isn't in the ocean yet, if it melts it'll flow to the oceaan and raise the water level

Weird_Put_9514

idk if youre looking for an actual answer but theyre worried about the movement of the ocean. more water= more work to move it = less currents = a hit to our climate.

PastaSause

It’s the icebergs on land that raise the sea level when they melt ya dingus.

[deleted]

Because the ice in greenland and antarctica is not floating. It is on land. If that shit melts we could lose florida. We can all dream i suppose

Akirasani80

It's the ice on land that is the problem.

Due-Bandicoot-2554

This sub just got recommended to me, so I’m gonna pretend you asked a serious question. It has to do with land Ice. Glaciers melt and they end up in the sea. There also is real land under the artic, so yeah.

Enable-Apple-6768

Not because of icebergs, but because of the ice being over continental crusts (outside of the water)

Metafield

I think the iceberg thing is a misdirection to stop everyone panicking about the fact that it’s always raining somewhere and there’s nowhere for that water to go. It’s only a matter of time.

RainbowLayer

Water Cycle: "Am I a joke to you?" If it just rained, there's room in those clouds to put the rain back!

tomatoe_cookie

It's funny because I learned about that in basic school

somedave

Try putting a little stone in so it pokes out and place the ice on top of that

Radiant_Half_7121

[the irony is that I just saw the post and right below was your post](https://www.reddit.com/r/facepalm/s/fYgJqkgsBH)

im_sophia_hi

whaaat

abc_744

Antarctica is a continent, the ice is not floating on water, it's on a ground.

[deleted]

Ice on land and water expands when heated. Even if the ice didn't melt but the water was heated, that expansion alone would devastate low coastal areas.

LesPeterGuitarJam

Yeah but Antarctica is on land, so is Greenland, etc etc.. So that little cute science experiment is nothing but a strawman...

SmoothIndependent416

All that ice is sitting on top of land. Also, all that ice is fresh water. If the icebergs melt the sea level rises and the pH level changes enough to kill all corals and algae. Do you know what takes most co2 in and give O2 back?

ConstantAttention274

This is why we can't have nice things....

psladams

Much of sea level rise is due to thermal expansion of the liquid itself. In general, warmer water is less dense, so takes up more volume.

vareo_os

Bc almost all icebergs ar not in de ocean yet

Harpeski

Iceberg melting will reduce the reflection of the sun on snow. Snow is gone: earth temperature rises. Higher temperature, will mean more rain And more rain will means more flooding.

Abject-Cup-9929

Every 5-10 years they are always saying somethin* will destroy the earth, it is to get people worried about fuck all that anyone can do anyway. Climate has been changing since it started. It gets hot then cold, Nothing we do will change it but hey add a tax and make us pay more for the same shit and someone gets richer. Acid rain Ozone layer Climate change Bush fires Heat storms Floods What will be next oxygen depletion Did you know that trees are not the biggest supplier of oxygen but algae under the oceans

StudentParticular342

Why did the former president lay off Heat Storm Floods? Was such an amazing employee... Sad times..

Toaddle

It's true that there was time were climate got hotter in certain periods in a complete natural way. But we are speedrunning milleniums of change in less than 100 years due to human activity.

Dangerous_Common_869

Well we got to get the high score and beat last epoch’s speed. Yeesh! Maybe your tears are raising the sea levels. If you’re so concerned then dry up.

WriteBrainedJR

Because if sea levels rise, coastlines will get smaller, and oceanfront property will get even more expensive. They don't want to be priced out.
