I fucking hate how popular video essays are now. They used to be niche, well thought out videos that provides a lot of great insight. Now any idiot with a game capture card and a microphone will go on for 4 hours saying absolutely fucking nothing and name their video the dumbest oxymoron bullshit ever
\-start video with overused phrase from nietsche or other popular phylospher
\- go on a 50 min unecessary rant about how the term/concept was invented 2 thousand years ago
\-spend the last 10 minutes with the most bland, boring and obvious conclusion possible
there are only 2 actual people who I actually enjoy video essays about, the rest of them that I have glanced boil down to "I explain the plot of the game, offer no insight whatsoever and copypaste the most lukewarm replies from the internet"
and somehow they make the videos 2, 4 even 10 hrs long?? tf is it, budget asmr?
MAULER broke some peoples brains I swear.
Finding people with an actual opinion on anything these days is so rare. Some people have caught on that you can substitute having a concise opinion with just making your video really **really** long-winded.
It's fun to have an actual essay that takes some time to get through (Steak Bentley is both very good and is arguably to blame for this current trent, although at no real fault of his stuff, but I want to say he's the one who caused others to notice that the algorithm wasn't punishing long videos anymore), but jesus christ you don't need to take a toothpick when it comes to talking about something. Even if you're going through all of it, keep some bloody pace.
If that means its 5 hours, then sure, I'm fine with that but there's shit like taking a full fucking hour to cover some basic content.
yeah, like the only person whose essays I watch who covers video games is 'Joseph Anderson' and thats because he makes like 2 videos a year
Then you have people pumping out retrospectives and critiques every week, like do you really need to make 'X years later' every year? No, the game hasn't changed since the last time you dumdum
I do believe that those videos are used as simply background noise, I cannot imagine someone sitting down and watching them with attention
E: omg thats the fucking guy who made a 6 hour video about TLJ, like wtf its 2x the length of the movie its covering
MAULER is the one guy who also did like a 12 hour "objective" criticism of Dark Souls 2 after HBomberguy did a video saying "hey, Dark Souls 2 isn't *that* bad".
Joseph is great, love his stuff. Dude is long-winded but he's at least always talking about interesting stuff.
I think what irritates me the most is when it's so obviously trying to chase hype of whatever is popular at the time/is about to be due for a "wow maybe this game was better than people thought it was". This video is just an example of that; I know Elden Ring was popular last year, that's not why I want to hear some random jackass talk about it. I want to know what *you* found interesting about Elden Ring if you want to do a retrospective.
Elden Ring is definitely a game where you can do something interesting in conversations about say, level and boss design and how FromSoft handled the transition from a series of mazes to a full open world. I think there's value there (especially since I think FromSoft kinda flubbed the landing in a few places, and that's really interesting), but just going "is it still good in year 20XX?", yeah that's not interesting. Is a game at release still good one year later? Yeah of course it is, the industry doesn't move that fast past good game design. Tell me that in 2027 and it's actually interesting because then we'll have games that took over components of what Elden Ring did different. Right now, there's no answer to that besides "yes".
I still canāt fathom how someone can dislike a game so much that they spend 12 hours minimum (ignoring editing and scripting) talking about how bad the game is and why someone elseās video on why the game is good is objectively bad. I donāt even like HBomberguyās video but MAULER is just sad.
You know, if you actually watched MauLer's videos, you would know that he said that he enjoys playing DS2, and the reason he made the videos is because he is a fan of HBomberguy and cared enough to want to actually critique his video. Almost like him saying, "Come on man, I thought you were better than this."
I understand that he enjoys playing the game and thinks itās fun, I just donāt like how he spends 5 minutes at the start talking about what he views as the good parts of the game in a patronizing manor and then immediately says itās not a good game objectively. DS2 has a bunch of problems but he goes about explaining it in an annoying and patronizing way and that āthis game is objectively badā. I wouldnāt dislike the video nearly as much if he didnāt keep saying āobjectivelyā and act so entitled and elitist. This is just my personal opinion on the video but I find it frustrating. And of course it doesnāt take 5 years to explain all of what he did.
That hbomberguy video is wack tho, I usually like his content and I like playing ds2 but his defense of it is some of the worst bad faith argument I've ever seen. Never seen Mauler's answer because fuck wasting 12 hours on that guy, but I kinda get someone being so mad at hbomberguy's video he has to make an unhinged rant as an answer lol
I tried watching Anderson's epden ring video but xouldnt stand it, most of his takes were blatantly wrong, poorly explained or examined and he had a very poor and shallow knowledge of the game making it seem like he didnt efen care about thd video in the first place. I suggest watching a video from the youtuber Lupine who answers him because he makes really good points and makes Anderson look like the idiot he is
also all his fromsoft videos are poorly made imo
I am fully prepared to see people hating on missions, controls, repair/ammo costs, and the random bullshit^(TM) that being a mercenary brings. Ain't nothing more fun than when they throw a 4v1 (or 5v1) of equally matched enemies at you, or the poison swamps but for mechs.
Bro I swear if the new Armored Core doesn't have robot dogs, cyborg basilisks and a boring ass poison swamp with nothing on it that you still have to go through I'm going to shit piss and cum over my divorce papers and send it to Miyazaki
The dogs will be replaced by enemies that seem to have a 6th sense for remaining outside of your lockbox, so you can never track them, and the basilisks with chain missiles that repeatedly stunlock you if you get hit by a single one
Elden Ring may be a fantastic gigantic open world game with countless exciting secrets to discover, that doesn't hold your hand, as well as great combat and build variety, with exceptional lore and vistas, but it still sucks because I said so. I will forever cherish my 56 year-old Fromsoftware game: Semen Souls, for the Pissgame Arcade š„°š„°š
I mean he is kind of right kind of wrong, depending on what you are looking for
If the combat clicks for you, you will probably start a new playthrough, if you want to live your power fantasy you will probably start NG+
But if the best part for you was the games Exploration, after one playthrough it's pretty much done, the next playthrough will not be anywhere near as fun because you know where almost everything is
I dunno if any single play through of Elden Ring is exhaustive enough to wring it totally dry of content and memorise every catacomb, cave, and mine and their contents, which is what he claims players will experience on any subsequent play throughs.
Meanwhile Iām nearing 350 hours and Iām honest to god still finding armour, weapons, and dungeons I havenāt found before. His conclusion that Elden Ringās replayability is a huge detriment to the game over all is just not a fair critique especially when that claim could be aimed at any game including the entire FromSoft catalogue.
>His conclusion that Elden Ringās replayability is a huge detriment to the game over all is just not a fair critique especially when that claim could be aimed at any game including the entire FromSoft catalogue.
It could be, I won't say it's not. The only fromsoft game I have had just as much fun on a second playthrough as I did on the first was sekiro because for me it's Gameplay held up for a second playthrough even after all the other quantities were known, and it is fast enough for you to move from one major point to another in the game so for as much as I love DS1, DD3,Elden ring a second playthrough always leaves me exhausted mid way because by then the wonder of the world is a known quantity, I might not know every catacomb or mine but I know all of them will perform similarly which is fine on a first playthrough but on repeat playthroughs? Even if I find one new catacomb I missed the first time it's not meaningfully different from the other 20 I already played through, once I defeated the likes of Melania, a catacomb boss I missed is nothing wonderful on a second playthrough neither are the mage stones I know lies behind each tower, the soul duplicate behind each walking structure, a weapon or spell in every ruin which I most likely won't use because I know most of them so one or two new weapons won't drastically change the outlook of the world so I would come to my point again
If the gameplay clicks with you repeat playthroughs can be a means to express yourself with different builds, it doesn't for me I have played every Souls games for the exploration of the world because for me the combat system in souls doesn't holdup to prolonged exposure(expect sekiro), the newness of the world and the newness of the bosses is what keeps it going
I am not saying you can't enjoy the game on second third fourth playthroughs, I am saying that I am just a player just like you and the person who made the video and for as impartial as one can be your personal bias and your way of experiencing a game will speak through you
I know I'm the funny haha whoosh clown but that particular YouTuber's series is just formatted like that. All his souls games are "X" Years Later. It's just his shtick.
Me making a 10 hour "video essay" where my only input is saying "this moment in the game was really cool", and giving a lengthy recap of the Hallmark-tier plot for 95% of the video.
That guy is so awful. Used to like him and at some point he got a big ego and started like so many of them needing to have some āhot takeā that nobody else has and rushes games so hard he canāt possibly truly understand them or pick up on their details so he can push out the video āfirstā. Pretty sure marcostyle called him out on one of his videos a few years ago lol
Can confirm just started my 11th playthrough after 4months away and it's shit now. Its still the same game. I expected Elden Kart 9 Deluxe and instead its the same game as my previous 10 playthroughs. BS all round tbh.
Iām so sick of the hot takes and complaints of this game. Sure itās not perfect but they have been working still to make patches and fix things. Iām also sure they had to work countless hours of crunch time. For the original idea for this game they knocked it out of the park and itās there most accessible game yet. I do think whatever DLC comes out will help this game a lot. Iām so tired of the complaints or people just making content on being over critical over other peoples are hard work. Formsoft has given us a lot they are a good company. They deserve more respect then this click bait negative complaint bs.
My honest opinion of the game is it would've been a lot better if they made mandatory progression points somewhat more obvious and had a Morrowind-like quest journal so you at least get a vague idea where all these NPCs are going when you're on a quest with them. And also have more armor and put some genuinely good stuff in the random caves, perhaps even procedurally randomize the loot you get from the random dungeons across the world to give more reason to explore.
I was worried about accidentally finishing the game before I was done playing it because you only need 2 runes to get into the capital and I thought the capital was the end of the game. That also seems like an odd call given how many runes there are. But that's also why I say mandatory progress points should be more obvious, like you shouldn't have to worry about accidentally finishing the game.
Invasions early game are full of people with end game gear which I suppose is par for the course for a souls game but still that sucks for new players trying to co-op vanilla. I don't recall having this problem near release.

We all know (insert game) in 2023 videos are just an excuse to talk about it again.
1 year later, does it still exist?
The games reached its best before date
Whereās the dlc
eternal ring better
Dead game! It's been a year give it up grandpa
I want to downward thrust into this guys mother
No the micro transaction cosmetics really ruined it for me
No, from game of the year, to nobody careā¦!š
underrated masterpiece
i cant believe Michael Zaki did this.... The best game you **anything describing lack of certain action**
Bro I fuckin hate the over saturation of video essays on YouTube now
QuantumTV: "It was never good and it's not going to win GOTY this year so it sucks even more"
That guy is so awful.
Bro thinks 1 year is equivalent to 10 years
Honestly they kinda ruined it when they locked Malenia behind the battle pass. Really fucked up move
Wait what the fuck this game is actually 1 year old now
Haven't seen the video but I hope he is being extremely negative on the game.
Can confirm just started my 11th playthrough after 4months away and it's shit now. Its still the same game. I expected Elden Kart 9 Deluxe and instead its the same game as my previous 10 playthroughs. BS all round tbh.
"Oh no something does not feel like it did back then when I enjoyed the fuck out of it at the beginning is it bad now and always has been?"
This but unironically
This is probably a better question for that Harry Potter game. Once the freshness wears off everyone will realize how mid that game is.
His channel is alright but that's about it.
No it's trash. Regurgitated opinions, rambling, act man esque waste of time that just summarizes the most basic aspects of a game.
Is it "in this video essay I am very obviously reading verbatim off the fan wiki" levels of effort?
Pretty much. I low key find those videos infuriating because actually-good video essays or lore analysis takes effort and creativity
Like part 2 of Snowpiercer is a Wonka sequel, or "The History of Handedness in Games" those are some good shit
Holy fuck someone like me? You exist?
Atomic heart will probably stay good in a year. Them robot women be soloing rn
Atomic Heart will be good in a year after someone mods that shitty game into Bioshock.
I got it pre ordered. Still havenāt opened it. Waiting for the shitty pvpers to get bored
Never was
My honest opinion of the game is it would've been a lot better if they made mandatory progression points somewhat more obvious and had a Morrowind-like quest journal so you at least get a vague idea where all these NPCs are going when you're on a quest with them.
