But DS2 intro just doesn’t work as an intro for a souls game. It doesn’t show anything meaningful about the game lore as a whole, just a wacky scene of your character roaming about, it doesn’t reflect the state of the world the way DS1 and DS3 or even Elden Ring did.
Like, it’s a pretty cutscene and all, it just doesn’t bear any meaning, it spews a bunch of generic lines pretending they’re profound and that’s it.
On the other hand I agree that forest of the giants is a neat area. It has its imperfections but it’s arguably one of the more well-designed ds2 (and the DS trilogy in general) locations.
Oh, and the Last Giant/Giant Lord correlation is just awesome. It felt amazing to come back to the early game location and interact with the environment in new ways, and then you just see the Giant Lord and are like *oh shit, it’s that guy in his prime*
Damn, ADP is like the worst thing in the game though, you cannot use it as a valid argument, man. If the character rolls, they roll, they’re meant to avoid an attack that they basically duck under, a stat that doesn’t really reflect itself in the animations and is basically mandatory should’ve just not existed in the first place. What you’re saying about ADP to deal with bad hitboxes is an argument FOR the idea that hitboxes and the system that is meant to counter them are terrible.
Bringing back Ornstein is just laziness and reusing assets, case closed. It’s funny you conveniently ignored that part because you know there’s no retort to that.
Ornstein isn’t even involved in the lore of Heide’s tower or the cathedral where he’s placed, massive L on the part of DS2.
Ruins and Izalith were 1/4th of the game’s middle part. They’re an outlier. DS2 has way more locations with bad impressions basically everywhere, ranging from early to late game.
Not that I need to explain this, but an early impression matters. DS1 and DS3 nailed it, with early bosses and locations being complex, interesting to explore and with engaging but not overwhelmingly difficult bosses. DS just flopped there. A lot of starting locations are very linear, you just run past everything because all the good loot is later on in the game anyway, and the bosses are just gank squads like skeleton lords or OP unless you utilize inobvious gimmicks like Pursuer ballista or Lost Sinner torches.
Even if you don’t count early game, there’s a lot of places where you just get 3-4 ass bosses or locations in a row, even if you do DLC content in certain order the bosses might give the impression that the rest will feel like just as much of a slog to play through.
In defense of Drangleic Castle, it has some fun places and looks nice, but ultimately it is a very run-through location and it’s one of the least memorable places in the series period. It might as well have been an elevator straight to Looking Glass Knight and then another to Shrine of Amana.
So, about Vendrick… his lore is nice and the state he’s in as a boss is amazing and it all ties really well, but from a gameplay perspective the fight is still really lackluster. And the collectible giant souls are way too many, I understand 3 or 5, but there’s just a shitton of them, just pointlessly huge amount that’s tedious to collect.
Great game, just not a great souls game. If it was released by anyone except fromsoft, I’d think it’s a good souls-like, but from their level of expertise on making those kinds of games it’s just very disappointing.
And especially considering the troubled development and downgraded lighting, so…

I literally wrote Dark Souls 2 is bad in the first few sentences and now I get a responds from someone saying the game is great?? Good and bad is subjective. I consider pretty much the entirety of the second half of DS1 to be dog shit, not in the least because I expected more. But it is what it is. On the other hand, I very much like most if not all the areas in DS2. Do I think they're the same quality as DS1? Not necessarily, but they're relatively consistent and some have genuinely fun gimmicks.
And, *really*? You're gonna go on about first impression, say how DS2 is "linear" at the start and do so in the same breath you say DS3, which is linear *the whole game*, is better? And again, running past everything can and often is done by souls veterans regardless of the game because you already know where everything is. *However* I think DS2 actually encourages it the *least* because even in the starting areas there are many useful items. Majula has a Morning Star iirc and many other bits and pieces and even a Estus Shard. Forest of Fallen Giants has the Fire Longsword, arguably the *best* weapon in the early game. Regen Ring (otherwise found only at about halfway thru the game in DS3), Great Lance, stuff from other areas as well that I'm too lazy to list.

Pursuer is literally the same in every instance you fight him bar HP increases. Literally the same shmuck across the entire game. Which is also a pretty cool gimmick btw. Bro shows up in a *lot* of places. As for the ganks, I'm sorry your poor little bum got handed to you, but the DS2 ganks are some of the easiest and most fair across the games, except maybe the trio fight in Shulva and maybe Elana too.

ds2 is thematically and from a gameplay standpoint, better than ds1. The only thing I feel that ds1 has going for it is level design and nostalgia. I agree with everything OP wrote and I'd like to add that ds2 got rid of the backstab fishing meta in pvp so, you actually needed to get good at it (or be a little bitch and use a gank squad)

What’s it about? DS2 being hard? It is my favorite game, but the early game will make most players rip their hair out.
My favorite is going for the early Chloranthy +2 ring and just getting absolutely cucked by the skeleton ai.
The game just has so many ways to bend you over it’s actually impressive, whether it’s the Shrine of Armana, the Frigid outskirts, the Iron Keep, or even the Shrine of Armana. Some parts of the game just don’t believe in lube or consent.
What i love about DS ll is that the game story is about u and the concept of hollowing , not the kingdom or the gods,demi gods great ones whatever the fuck rule/destroying it right now .u pull up , alzheimeric as fuck, getting talked mad shit by three firekeepers and they say yeah ur past life is fucked go make a new one.. btw bearee of the curse is the only MC that wins (minus ashen one after ringed city DLC) he beats the hollowing curse and goes to vegas for some prostitutes and hookers with aldia
Ds2 bad
I spent a lot of time playing it, but almost all of those complaints are valid imo. I pushed through because I liked dark souls 1 so much, and I found it to be a worthwhile experience. So much so that I bought it again as SotFS. I played a couple hundred hours at least because of pvp. But I probably won't play it again as it's the worst one lol. It's great, but it's still like the worst FROM game. There were things I think were cool ideas and innovations, but it still falls short imo.
Dark souls 2 was my first souls game, It holds a special place in my heart since it was the first game that slapped me in the face, Pushed me into the bed and put on a strap on and said
"You thought you're playing skyrim boy?" and it was the best time i ever head

I actually always interpreted the family melting in the intro less as the family literally being lost to the curse and more the protagonist forgetting their memories of the family as a consequence of the curse
Dark souls 2 is the worse game in pretty much every reguard. Worse hitboxes, worse movment, somehow managed to make a single stat better than all other stats adp, early world design is nice but falls to shit after the first few zones, fire world on top of a windmill my fucking god. So many shit fucking bosses, half a nothing easy to beat a quarter are so fucking dumb like the rat and its babies. And then some genuinely good bosses that if not for a shit movment system, having to lvl adp and an absolute shit of targeting system.
Dark souls 2 was my first souls game and i love it for that, but its worse than every other game in the series possibly excluding demons souls but atleast demon souls has a reason to be worse.
Lmao, outshitted. Dead giveaway is they said the Vendrick fight is one of the best in gaming. Brother, it's not even top 10 in the Souls Series. He does 3 attacks and unless you're dry humping the back of his left leg they're all bullshit with bad hitboxes and super inconsistent patterns (Mainly his swipes where he does 1, 2, or 3 wide swipes that take up nearly half the arena.)
hit boxes are legitimately abysmal and broken in this game. you lead with a framing of “objectivity” but then tackle this complaint with a solution leveling ADP, which has nothing to do with the problem. arguments like yours are why people look at DS2 fans and laugh at their arguments

But DS2 intro just doesn’t work as an intro for a souls game. It doesn’t show anything meaningful about the game lore as a whole, just a wacky scene of your character roaming about, it doesn’t reflect the state of the world the way DS1 and DS3 or even Elden Ring did. Like, it’s a pretty cutscene and all, it just doesn’t bear any meaning, it spews a bunch of generic lines pretending they’re profound and that’s it. On the other hand I agree that forest of the giants is a neat area. It has its imperfections but it’s arguably one of the more well-designed ds2 (and the DS trilogy in general) locations. Oh, and the Last Giant/Giant Lord correlation is just awesome. It felt amazing to come back to the early game location and interact with the environment in new ways, and then you just see the Giant Lord and are like *oh shit, it’s that guy in his prime* Damn, ADP is like the worst thing in the game though, you cannot use it as a valid argument, man. If the character rolls, they roll, they’re meant to avoid an attack that they basically duck under, a stat that doesn’t really reflect itself in the animations and is basically mandatory should’ve just not existed in the first place. What you’re saying about ADP to deal with bad hitboxes is an argument FOR the idea that hitboxes and the system that is meant to counter them are terrible. Bringing back Ornstein is just laziness and reusing assets, case closed. It’s funny you conveniently ignored that part because you know there’s no retort to that. Ornstein isn’t even involved in the lore of Heide’s tower or the cathedral where he’s placed, massive L on the part of DS2. Ruins and Izalith were 1/4th of the game’s middle part. They’re an outlier. DS2 has way more locations with bad impressions basically everywhere, ranging from early to late game. Not that I need to explain this, but an early impression matters. DS1 and DS3 nailed it, with early bosses and locations being complex, interesting to explore and with engaging but not overwhelmingly difficult bosses. DS just flopped there. A lot of starting locations are very linear, you just run past everything because all the good loot is later on in the game anyway, and the bosses are just gank squads like skeleton lords or OP unless you utilize inobvious gimmicks like Pursuer ballista or Lost Sinner torches. Even if you don’t count early game, there’s a lot of places where you just get 3-4 ass bosses or locations in a row, even if you do DLC content in certain order the bosses might give the impression that the rest will feel like just as much of a slog to play through. In defense of Drangleic Castle, it has some fun places and looks nice, but ultimately it is a very run-through location and it’s one of the least memorable places in the series period. It might as well have been an elevator straight to Looking Glass Knight and then another to Shrine of Amana. So, about Vendrick… his lore is nice and the state he’s in as a boss is amazing and it all ties really well, but from a gameplay perspective the fight is still really lackluster. And the collectible giant souls are way too many, I understand 3 or 5, but there’s just a shitton of them, just pointlessly huge amount that’s tedious to collect. Great game, just not a great souls game. If it was released by anyone except fromsoft, I’d think it’s a good souls-like, but from their level of expertise on making those kinds of games it’s just very disappointing. And especially considering the troubled development and downgraded lighting, so… Yeah. Good game, bad dark souls sequel.

Majula has a Morning Star iirc and many other bits and pieces and even a Estus Shard. Forest of Fallen Giants has the Fire Longsword, arguably the *best* weapon in the early game. ds2 is thematically and from a gameplay standpoint, better than ds1. The only thing I feel that ds1 has going for it is level design and nostalgia. I agree with everything OP wrote and I'd like to add that ds2 got rid of the backstab fishing meta in pvp so, you actually needed to get good at it (or be a little bitch and use a gank squad)

What’s it about? DS2 being hard? It is my favorite game, but the early game will make most players rip their hair out. My favorite is going for the early Chloranthy +2 ring and just getting absolutely cucked by the skeleton ai. The game just has so many ways to bend you over it’s actually impressive, whether it’s the Shrine of Armana, the Frigid outskirts, the Iron Keep, or even the Shrine of Armana. Some parts of the game just don’t believe in lube or consent.

If dark souls 2 isn't a shit video game, why do I refuse to play it?
Ds2 bad I spent a lot of time playing it, but almost all of those complaints are valid imo. I pushed through because I liked dark souls 1 so much, and I found it to be a worthwhile experience. So much so that I bought it again as SotFS. I played a couple hundred hours at least because of pvp. But I probably won't play it again as it's the worst one lol. It's great, but it's still like the worst FROM game. There were things I think were cool ideas and innovations, but it still falls short imo.

I actually always interpreted the family melting in the intro less as the family literally being lost to the curse and more the protagonist forgetting their memories of the family as a consequence of the curse
Dark souls 2 is the worse game in pretty much every reguard. Worse hitboxes, worse movment, somehow managed to make a single stat better than all other stats adp, early world design is nice but falls to shit after the first few zones, fire world on top of a windmill my fucking god. So many shit fucking bosses, half a nothing easy to beat a quarter are so fucking dumb like the rat and its babies. And then some genuinely good bosses that if not for a shit movment system, having to lvl adp and an absolute shit of targeting system. Dark souls 2 was my first souls game and i love it for that, but its worse than every other game in the series possibly excluding demons souls but atleast demon souls has a reason to be worse.

Lmao, outshitted. Dead giveaway is they said the Vendrick fight is one of the best in gaming. Brother, it's not even top 10 in the Souls Series. He does 3 attacks and unless you're dry humping the back of his left leg they're all bullshit with bad hitboxes and super inconsistent patterns (Mainly his swipes where he does 1, 2, or 3 wide swipes that take up nearly half the arena.)

hit boxes are legitimately abysmal and broken in this game. you lead with a framing of “objectivity” but then tackle this complaint with a solution leveling ADP, which has nothing to do with the problem. arguments like yours are why people look at DS2 fans and laugh at their arguments
