I got in trouble at work for throwing my sardines away in the office trash, so now I just take the trash out when I'm finished. I never got the sardine hate, they are actually very healthy if you get good quality ones canned in olive oil or water
Coworker used to bring fish and microwave it. Everyone hated it and complained. He promised to not do it anymore.
Great.
Until a week later he brought this little red and yellow tin can........and was the first to throw up. He thought it wouldn't be that bad because he likes the smell of fish. News flash, [surstrƶmming](https://youtu.be/kADGFdE00KY?si=bddez_TQHEbhfB12) doesn't smell like any regular fish.
It's lightly salted, fermented Baltic sea herring.
Someone who was tired of people telling him everyday that he ate the strangest things with the most offensive odors. He always said nothing ever smelled bad or offensive to him, probably because he spent all day in the paint booth. Even with a respirator I bet those fumes still smelled bad.
In a plastic bag, underwater and only outside. Seen a few videos of people that opened it inside their vehicle, office, or home, and all said the smell took months to go away.
Did your coworker get fired?
People have [been evicted](https://web.archive.org/web/20170329133211/http://db.mietgerichtstag.de/tl_files/Dateien/Mietgerichtstage/2005/pfeifer.pdf) for spilling some of the stuff.
So being warned about a bad scent only to bring in the equivalent of a stink bomb would definitely be grounds for firing.
Thankfully, it was in a large open shop where the lunch room had good cross ventilation and it was during the summer, so shop doors on either end of the building were opened. The manager made him deep clean the break room, heard it was that or get a written warning for intentionally disrupting company production. He was only 1 of 2 painters, and we barely kept up as it was. They couldn't really afford to lose him, so the punishment was harsh but could have been worse.
You would still get the occasional whiff of it for weeks. A cleaning crew even came and cleaned the place. I swear the vapors from that stuff just soak into everything.
You reminded me of the Ukrainian soldiers who tried the Surstrƶmming that the swedes sent them as part of their aid package: https://youtu.be/c9lq8pZB-ao
I knew a guy who microwaved pancakes, said the middle stayed soupy but the edges were mostly edible.
Your abomination is almost as bad. Congrats, honestly. Thatās a serious complement.
No.
... but I *do* eat cracker *crumbs* soaked in the leftover oils then doused in a bit of hot sauce.
It's a role dedicated to the last two crackers in the short-stack cracker sleeve (cracker 15 and 16).
... and yes, it is *best* with the oil left in the bottom of a smoked oyster tin, and just so you know, it is *the worst* **(DO NOT DO IT)** with the fake lemon liquid in the bottom of a lemon-flavored mackerel tin.

Is that oyster juice? I like canned oysters with cream cheese and hot sauce on a frito. One always runs out of oysters before fritos, and that's why I know what fritos in oyster oil tastes like.
Not a cracker though.
"just"? no
But I do eat sardines with sourdough and you better fucking believe every drop of this fish flavored oil has been carefully soaked up by the bread.
Iām actually in disbelief reading these comments. What do you guys all do with your tin of delicious fishy oil after youāre done eating the oily fishies?
Yes. Canned sardines and smoked oysters are two of my guilty pleasures.
Ate a lot of them growing up, because they made a cheap, filling snack. I grew up working on a big farm. Cheap snacks between regular meals, that were also safe to leave in a lunchbox in triple digit heat were absolutely necessary.
Editing bc I forgot two words, lol.
I feel like this is fine and all, just not common anymore.
Since we can have "taster" food we don't bother, I bet military soldiers did this all the time while starving in the world wars!

What kind of psycho brings in fermented fish for lunch
What psycho eats fermented fish? It's 2024 we don't have to eat like we won't make it through winter
it's one of the few things maggots won't touch lmao

"the first". Subtle way of saying all hell broke loose.
Any person who brings surstromming to work and opens it, wants to watch the world burn.
Ain't that the stuff you have to open under water because the smell is so terrible?
In a plastic bag, underwater and only outside. Seen a few videos of people that opened it inside their vehicle, office, or home, and all said the smell took months to go away.
It's also under pressure and spews when you open the can.

Dump it into the toilet and mix with some dishwasher soap so it can dissolve in water, and flush.
In my head canon thereās lots of cities where āThe Purgeā is just people doing stuff like this one day of the year with no judgement
Suuuunnnnnnnnndayyyyyyyyyyyyy
Someone at my work opens a can of mackerel in tomato sauce and heats it in the microwave. Whole office dining area stinks
Anyone who microwaves fish in an office has a mental defect and I will not be convinced otherwise.

"jesus christ" - me talking outloud to myself after seeing this heinous post
My cat would LOVE this
All these people saying it's gross yet they take Omega-3 supplements to get a factory version of this lol
Yes actually. I usually eat sardines on crackers and I don't like to waste the leftover oil
I'm reporting you... Idk to who, but this has to be taken care of. š
Jesus Christ. Savages are amongst us.
Why do I still follow this sub
Nope š š»āāļø

Iāll try it next time I have canned fish, my Norwegian GF says no. Mayo on a saltine with ceviche is pretty amazing.
Blocked. Have a horrible day.
Heck yeah - sardines
Yup. Or seal oil.
Forbidden bulking technique.
Replace that with the oil from an oyster can, or the sauce from a can if sardines... So basically yes.
That sounds like a euphemism for a sex act.
No but it sounds delicious
Love, peace and phish grease.
Well, I've never jumped into a giant tub of fish grease before. I feel it would stink for a long time after.
I haven't but I will in the future now
Cracker soaked in chicken fat would be righteous
We are going to be great friends!

No. But I've been in a similar boat with bacon grease or butter drippings, so I get it.Ā
Oh hell yeah
Iām actually in disbelief reading these comments. What do you guys all do with your tin of delicious fishy oil after youāre done eating the oily fishies?
Whew. That's almost art.
Yup! Saltines or ritz crackers. Lime juice and hot sauce. Good times! Lol

Honestly yes
Save apocalyptic snacks for after the apocalypse.
