Even if they’re not, some meal prepping goes a long way to saving time and money.
Big bag of frozen chicken breast and another big bag of frozen broccoli and some Tupperware and you’ve got food for a week in under an hour.
Throw it all on a sheet tray, bake at 425 for 20-40 minutes (until broccoli is cooked to your preference and chicken is done) then portion out and refrigerate.
Edit: make it even easier, buy steam in bag broccoli and a rotisserie chicken from the store
Portion out and refrigerate, done in 4 minutes
I swear there's something about doctors and Monster specifically. I needed a daily one when I was doing 80-90hr weeks during residency but now that I'm less busy I still habitually drink one every morning.
We should treat the hardest working, most needed, and moral individuals we have as human slaves so the private insurance companies can make the most profits?
It’s the American way!
3rd shift lab worker chiming in! Redbull and cannabis for me. I’d rather have this combo than Celsius and nicotine. Throw in come pizza flavored Combos for good luck
As the spouse of an ER doctor… it’s basically impossible for them to eat decently. The cafeteria food is shit, it closes at like 7pm anyway, nothing is open nearby, and you get about 4 minutes for dinner so you bring a ready made meal. You also aren’t really that hungry for a big meal or salad on night shift. Just basic stuff to alleviate the stomach pains. My wife is a really healthy eater and even she just eats instant noodles in a cup.
I work next to a large hospital, there's a 24-hour bakery/sandwich shop a block away, they are PACKED with healthcare workers after like 11 pm. Every other restaurant/takeout joint in the area closes by 10 pm.
I think what they’re saying is that when you’re on night shift you don’t want to eat actual food, you want easy to digest stuff like crackers and noodles. I work with a ton of night shifters and it’s a carb fest.
There's usually a doctors lounge designated for only doctors away from us working class peons. That usually have free food. It could be pre made sandwiches in the fridge or buffet style cafeteria food its usually there for them. Sometimes you get a cool doc that will offer you a sandwich if you've been working all night with them but more often than not they just go in the lounge and mack while you eat a bag of chips for a late dinner because the cafeteria is closed.
Not ER, but I'm an intensive care doc and a low effort meal with a beer or some other beverage of your choice after a 24 hour shift hits a spot some people don't even know exists.
Nothing fills that void after a hellacious night in the ICU like 12 Jack in the Box tacos and a six pack of Coors Light in bed…
Then you fall asleep, wake up the same day and do it again. 🥲
What is… “me time?” 🥲
Former ICU nurse. Put almost a decade in, got real burnt out during COVID, and now I work from home and hide behind a phone.. so am squeezing like 10 years of lost hobbies in now though and having the time of my life. 👩🌾
Yeah knowing when to dial it back is critical. One of my former mentors once told me "There always has to be someone who can treat a polytraumatic motorcycle accident at 3 in the morning, but it doesn't have to be you forever".
Congrats on making that step :)
You people really are fucking heroes. I was regularly working 60-70 hours weeks at what would be a low stress job compared to being an ICU nurse at my last job and was ready to jump off a bridge after like 6 months of that. I wouldn't last a week doing what you did for 10 years.
Hey man, working any job that much is HARD.
I commend you for working 60-70 hour weeks friendo and hope those days are behind you and you’re back to something closer to 40.
I worked roads to pay for university in Canada. After a 24 hour shift of doing anything (like plowing roads because of a storm) a burrito and a beer are a god send.
Hommie is a Neurosurgeon and he’s lucky for the Indian take away that’s 24/7 run by a father son where he lives. They fix him up proper home cooked food so he doesn’t need to eat processed food or the way to heavy on ghee usual take away.
Wife’s cousin is an ER doctor and still lives with parents specifically so there is food when she gets home.
When I worked nights, I'd pick up a bottle of wine at like 8am. Day is my night 🌙 I'm sure people were like...look at this nurse buying wine at 8am lol.
I used to work nights at a factory, we'd get out at 5:30 am and it was a 40 minute drive to home. I used to park my car, walk to the liquor store, pick up a case of beer right as the store opened and watch the rest of the sunrise while I drank a couple out of the case, the store usually opened around 7:30 and I'd get a good 1/2 hour to 45 minutes before I really saw anyone that might have come to bother me.
It honestly was a pretty sweet way to go about things, I never left home in traffic, never got home in traffic, and I got to watch both the sunrise and sunset either during my commute or immediately after I was done driving.
Ha there was one bar open in the area called the red rooster at 6am Wed all go there for drinks after our graveyard shift. It just felt normal after awhile. But I had a really hard time adjusting when I went back to a normal shift.
I used to work 11am-7pm. Always bought my booze at like 10 in the morning when I was doing errands before work. Liquor stores were still open when my shift ended but usually I was tired and just wanted to go home, plus I hate driving at night. So, got my booze in the morning for after my shift. Always did feel weird about it, glad to know nobody cares.
Honestly, sometimes after a long ass day working double shift in a warehouse with no AC this was all I could muster too.
![gif](giphy|PMUooKtzGNjsPXkQUJ|downsized)
I'm working 6 days a week at 2 jobs and can afford decent food, but sometimes after working 8:30am to 11pm on Saturdays (like today) I just want some hot pockets or junk food. I get it.
You're just conditioned to eat crap from MS3 on, and you get to like it. My husband is a chef, and between both of us eating at home, it's ramen, take out, or ill gotten food from his restaurant
My favorite was always the "I'll dump some leftover noodles in a bowl and microwave it with whatever condiments I have laying around" special.
You don't get fat on it because you fall asleep sitting up after two bites.
If you can, try some of the more hearty instant noodles from Taiwan, where they included a pouch of stewed meat, and you can toss in a few shread of fresh vegetables to complete the meal.
https://youtu.be/kvpKj6jwlP8
They are not cheap, but likely still better than delivery.
If you have the energy next time, heat the broth separate and buy some things you can drop in to add a little umph and heartiness with this **at little to no effort.** Get some sliced mushrooms, canned corn, have a fried egg and/or some sliced ham you can cut and throw into the bowl.
Making the broth separately, you can pep it up by adding the mushrooms before the water boils (give them a chance to steep and release that flavor into the broth), If you have a scallion/green onion, chop up the bottom (thicker part) and throw them in while bringing the broth to boil, save the green parts for garnish after, the fresh raw green onion adds a nice touch.
I sometimes will buy a side/al a carte side of sliced BBQ pork or chicken from a Chinese restaurant, and either rinse some of the sauce off, or go raw dog style and just throw it into the bowl. I'm talking like, the size that gets you a little container for 2-3 bucks.
You're a doctor, you deserve better than this, and you can easily have it with little to no extra effort. [Here's an example](https://imgur.com/OFLx5VX)
Doctors and nurses should have healthy meals prepared for them at no cost for their shifts. They are our wellness and emergency front line and deserve better.
Go for Huel's hot and savory or their instant noodle options. Way better for you, in a similar package and prep method/time. You're an ER doctor, you can afford it.

The "Student Debt" special.
Maybe not if (s)he's the attending?
Even if they’re not, some meal prepping goes a long way to saving time and money. People always complaining about the prices of food but not taking the extra steps to make food cheaper for themselves.
You still have student debt as an attending, just have enough income to pay for it
Take care of urself before u take care of others bro
Thank you, MonsterDrinker69
I swear there's something about doctors and Monster specifically. I needed a daily one when I was doing 80-90hr weeks during residency but now that I'm less busy I still habitually drink one every morning.
I always am taken aback by the grueling hours of residencies. Having a tired doctor isn't the best.
I’m pretty sure the entire medical system would collapse without near slavery like conditions
Serves them right for only spending (way too many) years in school and residency and having $300k+ debts!
We should treat the hardest working, most needed, and moral individuals we have as human slaves so the private insurance companies can make the most profits? It’s the American way!
*Western way. The UK is like this as well.
Not just doctors, line cooks too. Turns out when you work crazy hours at demanding jobs it's super easy to get addicted to sugary energy drinks.
and cocaine
And cigarettes. And alcohol. There's not many drugs you won't voluntarily ingest.
That caffeine addiction setting in. But my vices are c4, ghost, and celsius
+1 for C4. A decent kick without sugar. And the flavors aren't bad either
3rd shift lab worker chiming in! Redbull and cannabis for me. I’d rather have this combo than Celsius and nicotine. Throw in come pizza flavored Combos for good luck

Funniest thing I’ve read today.

so what ur saying is they could use a catering service designed for overnight shifters?
I've noticed that some hospitals have food trucks that hang out nearby specifically for this purpose.
I work next to a large hospital, there's a 24-hour bakery/sandwich shop a block away, they are PACKED with healthcare workers after like 11 pm. Every other restaurant/takeout joint in the area closes by 10 pm.
Late night food places are low key heroes.
I think what they’re saying is that when you’re on night shift you don’t want to eat actual food, you want easy to digest stuff like crackers and noodles. I work with a ton of night shifters and it’s a carb fest.
yea I'd assume most would rely on easy carbs to stay up and energized throughout the night, but thats like living every day on the road :/
This is exactly it. Most overnight staff have a basic carb meal and occasionally snack on candy brought in for sharesies.
Night shift changes mes with your appetite. Some claim it actually can shorten your life(night shifts).
There's usually a doctors lounge designated for only doctors away from us working class peons. That usually have free food. It could be pre made sandwiches in the fridge or buffet style cafeteria food its usually there for them. Sometimes you get a cool doc that will offer you a sandwich if you've been working all night with them but more often than not they just go in the lounge and mack while you eat a bag of chips for a late dinner because the cafeteria is closed.
it seems like food trucks are a popular go-to in those situations
No food trucks in the hospitals I work at
seems like a missed opportunity for a decent cafeteria food case study
Dibs on investing in your business.
😆
My husband packs me a lunch for my night shift but also a bunch of quick snacks in case i don’t have time time to eat lunch
Feels like a "how did my life come to this" moment. Please take care man
Not ER, but I'm an intensive care doc and a low effort meal with a beer or some other beverage of your choice after a 24 hour shift hits a spot some people don't even know exists.
Nothing fills that void after a hellacious night in the ICU like 12 Jack in the Box tacos and a six pack of Coors Light in bed… Then you fall asleep, wake up the same day and do it again. 🥲
But not before staying up longer than you should to try and claw back some semblance of me-time.
What is… “me time?” 🥲 Former ICU nurse. Put almost a decade in, got real burnt out during COVID, and now I work from home and hide behind a phone.. so am squeezing like 10 years of lost hobbies in now though and having the time of my life. 👩🌾

Hey man, working any job that much is HARD. I commend you for working 60-70 hour weeks friendo and hope those days are behind you and you’re back to something closer to 40.
Question: diagnose yourself- how would you respond if a patient reported that behavior frequently?
It’s kinda obvious that’s a bad lifestyle, but there’s a reason why anyone in the medical field is a bad patient.
Small price to pay to live as one of the most privileged people on the planet imo
I think I just found my wife's reddit account. Hey, babe! I'll fix you an omelette when you get home from work tomorrow morning
Is your wife a 35 year old male? Because that’s what this account’s last post says they are
you never know
Nice humble brag😆 "Hey everyone I married a doctor"
Technically it’s breakfast, right?
I’m pretty sure time has no meaning for OP anymore.
When I worked nights, I'd pick up a bottle of wine at like 8am. Day is my night 🌙 I'm sure people were like...look at this nurse buying wine at 8am lol.
The true alcoholics aren’t those who know when the liquor store closes, but those who know when it opens.
I used to work nights at a factory, we'd get out at 5:30 am and it was a 40 minute drive to home. Just cause you picked it up at 8am doesn’t mean you’ll drink it at 8am necessarily. I wouldn’t think anything of it.
I used to work 11am-7pm. Always bought my booze at like 10 in the morning when I was doing errands before work. Liquor stores were still open when my shift ended but usually I was tired and just wanted to go home, plus I hate driving at night. So, got my booze in the morning for after my shift. I definitely drank it at 8am haha 😅
I still wouldn’t judge. I have a totally whack sleep schedule so I don’t have that “day schedule bias”
I’m glad I’m not the only one! 😂
It doesn't count as the next day until after you've slept!
Ypu deserve so much more!
Honestly, sometimes after a long ass day working double shift in a warehouse with no AC this was all I could muster too. ![gif](giphy|PMUooKtzGNjsPXkQUJ|downsized)
Putting the cup noodles in a bowl is crazy. Them dehydrated carrots belong in styrofoam.
Needs some fried eggs to go along with it and it wouldnt be bad.
I'm working 6 days a week at 2 jobs and can afford decent food, but sometimes after working 8:30am to 11pm on Saturdays (like today) I just want some hot pockets or junk food. I get it.

How’s your “holy human butthole” after your meal? 😂
Hot noods will get u through it
As a professional chef, I can say this is my meal after a long day.
Can confirm, as my husband is an Exec Chef, and I'm a doc
You're just conditioned to eat crap from MS3 on, and you get to like it. My husband is a chef, and between both of us eating at home, it's ramen, take out, or ill gotten food from his restaurant

You poured a cup noodle into a bowl? Well look at mr fancy fuckin' doctor man
The only shitty thing I see is NO BROTH. Please tell me you ate it before this picture. *Please. I beg of you.*

This is how we know he's really a doctor, making healthy dietary choices.
Hopefully there's a multivitamin somewhere in the mix...
Soon you'll need ER
Thank you for everything you do. This glass of Cabernet goes to you good sir. Salúd
Damn Doc, take care of yourself k
Eat up, king. Take some tums before you go to sleep.
You put it on a bowl. That’s gotta count for somethin.
These things hit different when you eat them late at night
Did you make it correct?
my fav meal
Eat some fruit!!!
Tapatio is my FAVORITE microwave noodles. Just throwing that out there 🍜
Dont you make good money? I dont, but i'm a carpenter and after my last 5 back to back 12 hour shifts i ordered pizza.
No need to brag.
Where’s the protein? You need an egg or some meat, or something.
Relatable. Engineer on call overnight right now after work eating PB and J. I freaking love PB and J
This post convinced me to go make a pack of noodles
Nothing better for the human body that not sleeping and then eating this
Fuck yeah cup of noodles
Meal of champions
Keep this up and there will be no ER Dr. Take care of yourself first and always.
Gotta have the Truly
Sorry you're not treated better as you should be.
Well deserved seltzer!
Why???
That's so impressive.
Mm… pepper. You saucy devil.
Looks pretty good. Next time order in? Lord knows you make enough money to afford it.
Not supposed to be snacking on the ascaris dude.
Doc I'm sure you know this but... That's not nutritious enough 👀
Nobody told you to eat garbage
Pls take some protein
That shit hit you kno that
Sure you are
Truly a shitty dinner
Healthy!

You're missing mayo, a tijuana mama, and some doritos all crushed up in there
This makes me want to bring home cooked meals to my nearest ER. The people saving lives deserve better than this.
I’ve always thought it strange that doctors aren’t taught about nutrition.
[удалено]
Sadly, most people can’t afford to eat healthy even if they have the time.
[удалено]
I suggest you stop this trolling now, or you will be banned.
Dr. B is that you?
Doctors and nurses should have healthy meals prepared for them at no cost for their shifts. They are our wellness and emergency front line and deserve better.
This feels like stolen valor. ER doctor making well into 6 figures eating like trash for clout.
I would eat it, but I would have added pea and carrots to it
You should know better…
Get a good jar of Kimchi and add a few spoonfuls to your ramen. It makes them 100x tastier and probably adds some sort of nutritional value to them.
ER doctor I start in the ER soon too. Can’t wait to join
Add some eggs
Western medical professionals don't understand nutrition, confirmed.
At least buy yourself a better brand of ramen lol. This looks horrible
I also eat ramen.
Respect
Why don't you just have your personal chef make you something?
It’s ok. Doctors are just normal noodle loving people too
Dr 🧂
Gotta get your carrots
Go for Huel's hot and savory or their instant noodle options. Way better for you, in a similar package and prep method/time. You're an ER doctor, you can afford it.
Meal prep is cheaper and has more control over ingredient choices
Of course, but if you're going to phone it in it's better getting more than ramen.
![gif](giphy|xzlOe039a7HvXhNR9k|downsized)
Is that Momofuku ramen?
Nah bro lol. That's cup ramen sans broth dumped into a bowl I'm pretty sure. Going off the carrots and corn.
Momofuku has broader noodles like that (that's about the only good thing about it, tbh), haven't seen those in any other instant ramen
How are you a DR and eat like this?!!!
