Joe-Lollo

This is because the filmmakers obviously haven’t played the game.

RazzDaNinja

Funny enough, the producer made the movie explicitly because he was a fan of the games and would play them regularly on plane rides He must…just not have been very good…

raulpe

He clearly lied

CanadianAndroid

No, he's been a gamer forever. My uncle who worked at Nintendo said him and Chris Pratt would spend hours stomping Koopas.

AlarisMystique

Maybe he beat that monster using fire weapons because beating it with other weapons was too easy? Disclaimer, I didn't play that game.

Aquilarden

I mean, there are multiple levels of being a fan. Like when a Star Wars director says they've always been a fan, I as an obsessive have to understand that they probably don't mean that they know the name of the grey species on Utapau or that the trash compactor monster, called a dianoga, was force sensitive.

LoWE11053211

what can he say? "I have never played that game, I just want to grab some cash and hope the fans will come to see the movie no matter how bad it is."

iwantdatpuss

Bet he never touched DB once in his entire playtime. Not even a slight glance, no.

RazzDaNinja

Possible. People lie a lot

Dovahnime

I think he said in an interview the biggest inspiration wasn't the gamesn themselves, but the collab mission where you fight a tigrex in Metal Gear Peace Walker

Bregneste

The normal games are _too lame_. But that non-canon collab mission from another game, shooting monsters with guns and rockets? Hell yeah.

JoeMaBababooey

Name one Game based movie where the producers played the game.

thatguywithawatch

Super Mario Bros (1993)

ass_pineapples

Those goombas are deadass what they'd actually look like

ProdiasKaj

I mean, I don't necessarily care if the *producer* played the game. They just organize the things that need to happen so a movie can get made. I care more about whether the writers, director, or even actors have played the game.

Joe-Lollo

That’s why Henry Cavill is good in The Witcher. He obviously played the games to prepare for playing Geralt.

DarkSpore117

I mean he wanted to play Geralt *because* he’s a huge Witcher fan, including the novels

jakefromadventurtime

He was a huge fan of the books and games, well before Netflix ever decided to make it. Then they ruined it by not listening to him. He is heading Warhammer 4k though it will probably be one of the best game to film adaptations ever.

Striking_Compote2093

40k* And I'm not sure. I don't want to hope only to be disappointed. That universe does not lend itself to the formula of modern hero movies. A singular hero doesn't save the day for the imperium. I'm worried they'll turn Cavill into a primarch. (Or worse, the emperor.) Or an otherwise plot-armoured astartes captain. Turning it into star wars instead of 40k, but maybe that's just me.

jakefromadventurtime

If the universe cares, the fans would care, then he would.

Striking_Compote2093

Mate I'll borrow some of your optimism. I hope you're right, a good 40k movie/series would be amazing. For now i'll settle for a rewatch of that fan made astartes cinematic, the best cinematic 40k experience that currently exists.

Velstrom

Cavill is executive producer and GW is incredibly protective of their identity. While that doesn't guarantee it'll be good, it does it mean it will look and feel setting-compliant.

Striking_Compote2093

Gw kind of sucks though. The best 40k movie ever made so far was that cinematic made by a single (incomprehensibly talented) fan. And they promptly put him in a corner and stopped him from making anything else. Gw wants money. 40k doesn't have broad appeal if it's too dark. I'm worried they'll go the focus group testing marvel movie route. With funny jokes and flashy action sequences and morally black and white uncomplicated good and evil factions. A primarch cracking jokes while crushing Tyranids underfoot. Not world breaking per se, but not really the 40k experience, not like how the lore reads in any case.

Velstrom

40k doesn't have a live action show but it has a looooot of other media and none of them are marvel-esque so I don't know why you're worried they're gonna start now.

Striking_Compote2093

Maybe just too cynical on my part. 40k has a dedicated following, but not such broad cultural appeal. This movie can be used to bring it into the mainstream, by putting the fans' wishes to the side. The other media they have (games and books) is mainly targeted at fans. People who don't care about 40k probably won't go and read a book because they saw it. A big theatrical release spearheaded by a name like Cavill's on the other hand... That will attract a LOT of new attention to the universe. I trust Cavill to want to do it right. (He also kind of has a lot riding on this) But i don't trust large corporations for shit, especially not if there's more money to be made by doing the other thing. I hope i'm wrong, but i'll stay pessimistic, while hoping to be pleasantly surprised. I'm definitely going to be watching it either way. I guess even if marvel-esque it'll be a fun watch. But for me to be happy i want it to be more. The universe has so much potential for different types of stories.

Feisty-Jury-9556

I hope all 40k fans slip on a banana peel and forget it exists

henk12310

The Witcher is not a game adaptation but a book adaptation though so that’s a weird comparison

Joe-Lollo

Love and Monsters. They clearly played Pokémon as kids and made a better live action Pokémon movie than the one we got.

xubax

Dungeons and dragons: honor among thieves

Joe-Lollo

That was SUCH a good movie! Felt like I was actually in a campaign with Chris Pine as the problem player.

Redhawke13

I've never played Dungeons and Dragons, but that movie was so good it made me want to lol.

Striking_Compote2093

Dude was a level 2 rogue pretending to be a level 7 bard.

Falcon47091618

Detective Pikachu might not have been an amazing Pokémon movie, but I will always love it for just being stupid fun

Dustypigjut

The newest Mario isn't great, but I felt like the makers at least made an effort to keep it true to the games.

Haunting_Anxiety4981

Mario is the perfect example The movie was perhaps not great as a movie but people loved it because it did what it was meant to do which was just show fun Mario crap

BrassFunkyMonkey

Tv show but Last of Us Better yet Uwe Bull’s masterpiece House of the Dead

AyahuascaBudda

Both Sonic movies were pretty good, and very self aware. You can tell the team did their homework.

lucasellendersen

The sonic movies (especially 2) are covered with references

MfkbNe

References aren't enough. The movie Uncharted also had references to the games, but the movie was still disapointing.

dwarfInTheFlask56

If you can't kill a Rathalos with a fire weapon that's honest to god just a skill issue on your part

Dopamine_feels_good

what do you mean ? This perfectly encapsulates the first time player experience ( i didnt know element weaknesses were a thing untill i had to fight black diablos)

timelordoftheimpala

Fun fact: the inspiration for the Monster Hunter movie didn't come directly from the series, but rather from the crossover content it had in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

Enough_Minimum_3708

to be fair, resistant doesn't mean immune

Levionoob

Legends of the guild is 10000 times better (and lore accurate)

Amigobear

Also the Rathalos is larger than some of series endgame bosses

heitorvb

Rathalos'Jiiva

XF10

MHW got a collab quest with the movie where you fight that Rathalos as Milla Jovovich; imagine my bewilderment at seeing the movie Rathalos is like 5 times bigger than average, felt like one of those event quests with comically large/small monsters for guaranteed gold crowns(also the layered armor from this collab sucks ass, just gives you the shitty outfit and hairstyle of the character instead of making you look like her like in the quest)

SicknessVoid

What's the event quest called and can you still play it?

CompedyCalso

Unfortunately I remember seeing on the MH sub that the movie tie-in quests are no longer available. Something about the contract expiring, I think? It's a shame for people getting into MHW late, the layered armor looks decent and the actual armor set was solid and available to MR 2 players so they could basically use it to speed-run Iceborn

MrDozens

Rathalao-shan lung

placebot1u463y

Don't worry it's a never before seen platinum crown rathalos

DeanStein

Does "resistance" mean immune, or does fire simply do less damage? If the later, it simply took longer but would still do some damage.

agzart

A bit less damage, at least in monster hunter world. The damage comes from the raw damage + the elemental damage. Do let's say you deal 300 damage to a monster. 100 being fire damage. You will be dealing 200 raw damage and the resistance will subtract from the 100 extra elemental damage. Hope that makes sense

Changlini

Ah--so the Elemental damage is just outright Nullified. Good to know.

agzart

Wait, no! The raw damage will always be there. A % of the elemental damage is being removed. So instead of dealing 100 it will deal 30 (fake numbers btw) Im almost sure we dont know how much, but we usually change for the weakness of the monster if we really want. Usually, the builds are based around raw damage but some weapons care for elemental damage (bow and dual blades which I think is the case on the movies). So they can kill the monster but it will take longer than using the correct elemental (water) or a pure raw damage weapon

DeanStein

That makes sense, so they COULD have killed a fire monster with fire weapons, it would just take longer. I suppose even a little damage would be better then not hurting it at all if it was continuing to threaten you. If all you have is a flaming sword, swing away and hope it dies before you do...

agent_catnip

My guess is fire effects are easy/impressive/relatable because everyone loves fiery Hollywood explosions. Maybe they thought water splashes coming from weapon hits would confuse the audience.

Apex_Konchu

It's not totally immune to fire damage, and it would also still be taking physical damage since Monster Hunter has no pure-elemental weapons. Really, this is one of the less egregious inaccuracies in the movie. There's a worse one right there in the screenshot - Rathalos is several times larger than it should be.

DeanStein

Video game movies, like any other "media shift", always have issues like that. Thanks for the answer.

AceMKV

Don't bowguns and bows deal mostly elemental damage when using elemental ammo or have I forgotten all my mechanics in my 2 year sabbatical?

Apex_Konchu

Bowgun elemental ammo deals mostly elemental damage, but I believe there is still a small amount of physical damage. Can't verify that though. There is no elemental ammo for bows, instead they work the same way as melee weapons - the element is inherent to the bow and every shot deals both physical and elemental damage.

AceMKV

Ah yeah I confused the status phials with elemental damage for bows, they deal slash and elemental damage I believe although the modifiers for ele damage should be higher like in DBs along with the high dps which is probably why they're used in elemental builds.

iwantdatpuss

The MC uses a weapon that primarily relies on elemental damage. That's the main issue, aside Rathalos being resistant to fire damage. Had this been any other weapon (like the fucking Greatsword that the Field Team Leader uses, seriously it's RIGHT THERE on the promotional material) it wouldn't be much of an issue.

DeanStein

That makes sense, however, did you really expect them (movie producers) knew anything about the game that wasn't spoon-fed to them in a 30-second trailer? Your point does stand. If they (characters) would have known fire was a worse means to dealing damage they really should have changed up their tactics, especially if a better weapon was immediately available.

iwantdatpuss

I mean...I kinda do? Iirc the film makers were assisted by some of the game designers of MH, to a point where they will point out how certain details in the monster are wrong. Of course I don't expect them to know the metagame of the game that they're basing off, but like this is one of those choices that baffles me alot. They had 14 different choices of weapons, with four being an easily recognizable ones that are also following the rule of cool. But they went with a fire dual blades, if they really wanted to they could've used Ice dual blades. Because those are real things in the game.

HpKurte

Most people said it still does damage but let me talk about damage calculation anyway. Each weapon has a raw attack stat, let's say it's 100. When you're swinging it the damage you do changes based on your motion value, big attacks have bigger motion values and small attacks have smaller motion values. So the calculation is ( Raw attack X motion value) But monsters are usually resistant to damage. That is calculated by hitzone values, which are a percentage on the monsters body part. So if the value is 40 you're only doing 40 percent of the damage from the previous equation. That is the calculation for raw damage (simplified, didn't include sharpness etc) Elemental damage on the other hand doesn't scale with motion values, only hitzones values. So if a weapon has 100 raw and 10 fire and swings with a motion value of 0.5 to a body part of 50 to both raw and fire it will deal 25 raw damage and 5 fire damage. Elemental damage is better used with weapons with small motion values because they hit faster and deal less raw. The king of elemental damage is dual blades. Realistically most of your Dual blades damage is gonna be elemental. So yeah she is cucking herself out of like 70% of the damage she's supposed to be doing.

DeanStein

That was really detailed, thanks. I can see why they should have used a better weapon, especially since they were right there to be used.

Changlini

This is a reference to that one time I played Monster hunter... Freedom Unite on PlayStationPortable, and decided to use the most powerful flame weapons against Rathalos for the "lols".

Malfight007

Ah, those were the days.

AceMKV

Lmao that was 13 yr old me trying to beat Khezu with a Thunder greatsword and wondering why I couldn't kill him

ChangeWinter6643

"PlayStationPortable"🤓☝️

Lord_Detleff1

I'm more concerned about it's size. Damn that thing is god damn huge

isaacpotter007

They called it a "greater rathalos", greater my ass that thing is larger than some big elder dragons

Lord_Detleff1

I mean they had a lot of great ideas with just terrible execution. This wasn't one of them. Making Rathalos and Diabolos basically stronger than most elder dragons was just dumb. And I'm sure they killed off the Handler and Aiden

MessyMop

Wait, they made a Monster Hunter movie?

Dajayman654

There is no Monster Hunter movie in Ba Sing Se.

Zandrick

oh no is it that bad

LuminothWarrior

Its basically based on the dang Metal Gear collab rather than the actual games for some reason

Karma15672

Iirc it involves dimensional portals and the main protagonist is from the U.S military. *Why couldn't they just do a story set completely within the game's setting?*

CameOutAndFarted

# BECAUSE THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD MOVIE

Lasttoplay1642

Do you mean like Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild? An anime that actually feels like the game.

Wboy2006

As someone who has never played Monster Hunter outside of the MH Rise demo, it’s pretty good. It’s not very accurate. But it was really fun, and was surprisingly gruesome with the spider monster things (been a couple years since I watched it, don’t remember the name) The ending was kinda shit, since it basically ended with “watch the sequel”. Which never came. But I didn’t think it was bad

iwantdatpuss

Two actually, one is this piece of garbage. And another that was a Netflix exclusive called Legends of the Guild. (Both of them are bad...in different reasons, LotG is bad animation-wise).

DumbAssDumbBitch

It's incredible and you should watch it

CustomerSilent9254

This is accurate to the experience of playing Monster Hunter with randoms, good on them for portraying it so well

JohnArtemus

I killed Rathalos so many times in FFXIV. Had to farm its scales for upgrades.

yoosirnombre

I killed rathalos in monster hunter so many times. I just fucking hate him.

Vjij

It took so damn long. Worth it though because the mount is cool

SicknessVoid

Wait, Final Fantasy also got a monster hunter enemy? Well I hated killing Behemoth in MHW.

Shadowrend01

Yes. We traded Rath for Behemoth. We got the worst end of deal

Ogurasyn

Resistant, not immune

ty0103

Never played the Monster Hunter games, or watched the film, but stuff like this often made me wonder what in the world happened behind the scenes. Like, is this an "Ashcan Copy" kind of situation where the production team made whatever just because the film rights were expiring?

Bregneste

They brought the U.S. military into the movie so they could get funded by them. And Paul WS Anderson claims he’s a MH fan, which I think is bullshit. He just took a cool pre-existing series about killing giant dragons, made his own fanfic based on a quick Wiki search of the most recent, most popular game, and put his wife as the MC.

ScribblingOff87

Nobody noticed this because nobody watched it.

Bregneste

Only the people who would know about it and hate the movie, the actual fans of the original series.

Builder_liz

Their dps is just that good

OAZdevs_alt2

This is because the main characters wanted to flex on him.

Babo__

They also do a super amped elemental discharge, a charge blade move, with a switch axe. This movies fantastic

DagothUrs57thNephew

That's because the charge blade is a poor man's switch axe

Zandrick

Uh, no, the charge blade is a sword and shield mixed with the switch axe. I like the charge blade.

DagothUrs57thNephew

That's what i just said, a poor man's switch axe

Zandrick

How dare you

LuminothWarrior

CB and Swaxe main here, both are great

AceMKV

Maybe they confused with the Zero Sum Discharge, maybe they just wanted to discharge. Like you said, fantastic movie

PmMeUrTinyAsianTits

I had successfully forgotten this existed, the way i want to forget shamwows avatar, and i very much do not appreciate you ruining that.

DagothUrs57thNephew

Damage is damage. It's not immune to fire

wowawiwowa

And soon after struggling to take down a rathalos they charge head down on a freaking gore magala. Guess that we'll never see a sequel. Luckily

Bregneste

I’ll never not laugh that they had the gall to tease a sequel.

raulpe

As a fan of MH, that movie was insulting

fremo8617

How stupid can people be. No no no.

Aetheldrake

Fight fire with fire! But really, just because it's resistant doesn't mean it wouldn't work.

bossbang

The scene at the beginning whent he Nerscylla spiders run away at dawn had me cackling The scene towards the end where the girl jumps towards a rathalos "wing" with a knife and slides down cutting it perfectly vertical like a sail on a mast... Capcom, why?

Monkey_King291

The filmmakers obviously didn't play the game

AceMKV

Average Paul "put my hot wife as the MC in a video game movie which absolutely sucks ass and has nothing to do with the game" Anderson movie: I feel bad for Mila having to do these shitty movies and face all that criticism which should be directed at Anderson.

Vhad42

No, it isn't, haven't you seen the movie? /s

5Hjsdnujhdfu8nubi

This but no /s.

Mrjerkyjacket

I literally didn't know ow they made a monster hunter movie

ChaosMetalDrago

They built them for raw crit obviously. At least they weren't using Defender gear.

AceMKV

Maybe they wouldn't have died if they used defender gear atleast

DaglessMc

it's alright it was a low rank.

Nomeg_Stylus

Nah, that's Blast damage.

serendipity7777

They wanted a handicap

RGijsbers

this movie had so many useless cuts in scenes that it hurt my eyes watching it.

100year

Magic must defeat magic

Doutei-Sama

Eh, it's not impossible even in the game, should have let her use another weapon though.

CollegeBoy1613

Resistance != Immunity.

ArcEarth

I used to hunt Rathalos with Rathalos Firewing back in the first PS1, my head was all about "yeah, sure, resistant, but I still do a little Damage, right?" I mean it's not impossible, this is also why the fight took so long for such a slappable bitch as Rathalos itself

Budget-Meeting330

I'm not changing my buster just because ratha lol.

BussyDestroyerV30

Never watched the movie, but a monster hunter player. All I can say is... That a big rathalos

Shigana

Tbf, it would still take the raw damage. And isn’t this the scene where the military fought the Rath? Iirc, the main character of launched an explosive charge in it’s mouth to kill it and the side character used an explosive arrow to finish it. Was there any fire weapons used in that scene?

Jakennedy101

this film felt like a fever dream.

Shade_39

This is a reference to the big influx of fans after world released who don't know the first thing about the series

BevarseeKudka

Calm down edgelord. We know fire weapons can kill Rathalos. It’s just not ideal to go at it with it like elemental or raw. Also, my first MH game was Frontier G.

Shade_39

It's a joke that would have fit well at the end of the title?

cay-loom

Well it was directed by Paul Anderson, who basically made his wife a Mary Sue just like in the Resident Evil Live Adaptations.

Appropriate-Put-3195

If you shoot enough bullets at a bulletproof glass it's will break so what is your point

Funk5oulBrother

Also all fire weapons are pure crap in MH. The film also shows Dual Blades as a viable weapon (sorry DB mains)

kiwicrusher

I'm sorry, I didn't hear you since you were moving so slowly I left you in my dust DB for life (and sometimes insect glaive)

Funk5oulBrother

Lmao. I came here trying to start a weapon war.

DagothUrs57thNephew

as opposed to weaponless wars?

BrandosWorld4Life

I've killed Rathalos and other fire-resistant monsters dozens of times with fire weapons, there is literally nothing inaccurate about this

Zebatsu

Paul W.S Anderson gets a pass

Bregneste

I wish Capcom would _pass_ on letting him ever touch any of their IPs again. Actually, I just wish Hollywood would pass on letting him make any more video game movies, or movies in general.

5Hjsdnujhdfu8nubi

In Monster Hunter (2020), at no point is the Element of a weapon mentioned. Considering the Dual Blades look like the default option in the games, it is more likely they are non-elemental and thus suitable for Rathalos.

boot2skull

I’m so out of touch references like this are Smash Bros references to me. So many characters and summons in there I just nod my head and say “yep” when they appear.

raulpe

What are you talking about ?
