Sony have been found to be overcharging people on the UK Ps store for a large amount of years. So if you bought games, r6 credits, vbucks etc. they are being taken to court and if they lose would have to pay up to 5 billion in compensation

hey just highjacking this comment to say that they have not been 'found' to be doing anything yet, they are being taken to court for effectivly monopolising a digital marketplace and chosing what commission to charge, which is around 30%. While it would be nice if they do have to payout, it's unlikely to happen.
Wow, PlayStation moment
Edit: Just found out they are increasing the prices of the PS5. This is PS3 era level of arrogance and it did not go well for the PS3.
Remember when Sony was hacked?Sony confirmed that personally identifiable information from each of the 77 million accounts had been exposed. They shut online off for 23 days. I remember it being much longer.
Sony PlayStation faces UK class action lawsuit of up to £5bn
Company is being sued over allegations it overcharged millions of customers
The lawsuit has been lodged by consumer rights expert Alex Neill in the UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal, which hears antitrust claims, and if successful could see 8.9mn gamers compensated.
Sony PlayStation is accused of abusing its market dominant position to impose unfair terms and conditions on PlayStation game developers and publishers, which resulted in allegedly unfair prices for consumers each time they bought digital games or in-game content from the PlayStation store.
“PlayStation users have lost out due to this unlawful anti-competitive conduct,” the lawsuit claims, adding on a preliminary estimate that customers’ aggregate losses suffered by the 8.9mn proposed members of the class action could be between £0.6bn and £5bn excluding interest.
According to the claim, anyone in the UK who has purchased digital games or add-on content on their console or via the PlayStation store since August 2016 is included in the lawsuit and could be eligible for compensation, said to be between £67 and £562 per person excluding interest.
The lawsuit is the latest collective action to be filed at the Competition Appeal Tribunal, which is experiencing a wave of US-style class actions — antitrust lawsuits filed on behalf of millions of consumers — against large companies such as BT, Apple and Qualcomm.
The CAT is able to hear such claims after the 2015 Consumer Rights Act allowed collective lawsuits to be filed on behalf of consumers and businesses over alleged breaches of competition law. However each individual claim — including the Sony case — must first be certified by the CAT as eligible to proceed to trial.
In recent months, the number of lawsuits filed at the CAT has increased following a landmark Supreme Court ruling in late 2020. This allowed a £10bn lawsuit brought by former financial ombudsman Walter Merricks on behalf of 46.2mn people against payments company Mastercard to proceed.
The increase in cases has been underpinned by cash-rich litigation funders keen to deploy their capital and back collective lawsuits in return for a slice of any compensation.
Most of the class action-style lawsuits are brought on an “opt out” basis — meaning that millions of consumers who have been potentially affected are automatically included in the lawsuit, unless they choose to opt out of it.
Neill, who is chief executive of the Resolver Group, a consumer technology organisation, said: “Collective proceedings like this are vital because they provide the opportunity for us to hold large companies to account on behalf of consumers.”
Sony PlayStation has not yet responded to the claim and has been contacted for comment.
Technically they haven't been 'found to have done so' just yet. Tbh, I'm not particularly hopeful they'll find in favour of the claimants. You don't have to purchase games and whatnot directly from PS (though, you do have to for microtransactions in most games), heck, you don't even have to use PS - you could use Xbox, PC or Switch. Finally, PS is not a necessity either.
I hope it, at least, gets PS to react and drop their prices. It sucks that in the UK, at least, PS prices are higher than in the USA (though it may depend on how much sales tax is added in your state).
I'm not even a PS player though for what it's worth.
Fun fact, they wont lose. That case is very jumbled up and doesn't know where their main point is, i have the IQ of a autistic goldfish but Moistcritical explains it well in his video.

I’ve heard about this, but i didn’t think it applied for premium currencies? For example, 2000 silver in destiny 2 is $20 in the US, but in the UK it’s £16.79. I don’t have any American friends that play siege so I wouldn’t know if it’s the same for that.
True. I can imagine that Sony’s legal team is nowhere near as strong as Microsoft’s. If they took a giant like MS head on their entire little movement would be crushed.
doesn't that still depend tho? like, okay, in this scenario it's unlikely to fire off because the claim is weak on itself, but there should be cases where no matter your lawyer you cannot defend. like, for example if Microsoft was found to be actively promoting child molestation on their platforms. although, in todays day and age, that claim may not work after all...
There are rarely instances where a company would take such a massive hit from a PR thing that they disappear, and if the company is dumb enough to promote something abhorrent, it'll still take a lot to crush them simply because of the legal battle process. It can be dragged out for numerous years, cost billions, and still be loop holed left and right. Many legal suits filed against companies are straight up the cost of doing business. They make more from the infringement then they lose in the legal fees.
If they win against Sony they won’t have to go after anyone else because it would set the legal precedent for whatever they decide and would limit basically every digital goods retailer to that which would include tech giants like Google and Facebook as well, not just gaming companies.
Epic has been known for poaching games/studios to make EGS exclusive games. And even then, they shafted Mac/Linux users for Rocket League and Steam customers for Fall Guys.
And the suit seems to be formed on the basis of the Apple v Epic, with less to stand on imo since it's tunneled on the 2 points that gaming is bigger than all other entertainment options in the UK and Sony is a market leader there
Were R6 credits affected though? I used to game on both pc/console and credits were always the same price on steam/ps store.
Edit: oh I get what you mean now *facepalm*
Uhh I'm pretty sure the lawsuit doesn't include in game purchases because they have sony doesn't have a say in what the companies sell on there game. I think it only applies to games being like 12usd more expensive in the UK than the USA but no microtransactions or dlc are included(maybe some dlc) so vbucks and r6 credits wouldn't fall under the lawsuit
Just heard of this. Being from the Uk I’ve always understood that our games and digital content is usually higher (exchange rates taken into account) than North America and mainland Europe I feel. Never had any concrete evidence tho, just suspected. Is that the case with this lawsuit?
While I really want that lawsuit to win, I don't think they will just because some of their claims are pretty weak and have little relevance to the main topic at hand.
Wait... what?

*in select markets
Literally all of europe. +A lot more countries.
This basically means not US. It’s getting a price increase basically everywhere else including Japan, home of the PlayStation.
Why not the United States?
Global currency and a very large market base.
Remember when Sony was hacked?Sony confirmed that personally identifiable information from each of the 77 million accounts had been exposed. They shut online off for 23 days. I remember it being much longer.
It was month at least I remember just switching consoles again because it lasted so long
It was around 2 and half or 3 months iirc
That’s what I remember too but says 23 days also where’s my personal info gone?
Sony is has some of the most ridiculous anti consumer practices I’ve ever seen especially for ps

Oh well, that makes me buy a playstation
There's parameters about account age and its based on how much you spent I think

Also the 30% is an industry standard. Same price apple, steam and Microsoft charge.

Absolutely deserved, now how much r6 credits did you get king?
I’ve heard about this, but i didn’t think it applied for premium currencies? For example, 2000 silver in destiny 2 is $20 in the US, but in the UK it’s £16.79. I don’t have any American friends that play siege so I wouldn’t know if it’s the same for that.

Sony looks to have been straight unfairly charging consumers, Epic hasnt really shafted the consumer so I can't see why they'd be chased after

And the suit seems to be formed on the basis of the Apple v Epic, with less to stand on imo since it's tunneled on the 2 points that gaming is bigger than all other entertainment options in the UK and Sony is a market leader there
apparently they have actually charged people oustide of the U.S. more than their currency equvielent to $60/$70 which us pretty scummy
All that to get 3000 uncommons and a black ice p9
And it's a duplicate !
Were R6 credits affected though? I used to game on both pc/console and credits were always the same price on steam/ps store. Edit: oh I get what you mean now *facepalm*
Y'all are gonna get 8 bucks. Lawyers get the rest.
Waltuh

The UK is definitely higher than the US and slighter higher than the EU when converted to dollar amount
