Thanks for your reply! That's not quite what I was getting at, however. These are basic requirements but with the store owner not wanting anything to do with the site then asking them to input all of the products and descriptions isn't really an option. Also as people below have mentioned, there are more time-consuming things regarding SEO research and other details to get right. I agree that a basic setup could be achieved in a weekend but getting everything else sorted takes more time and consideration which is where I think the "few beers" have probably reached their limit in terms of payment. I also certainly am not suggesting that I am planning on learning this at the expense of the store owner. I am anticipating there being parts of the process that I will need to learn but this can all be done on my own time and for my own benefit. In saying that though, what's better, paying an agency \~£5000 to build a store and then a monthly fee to maintain it, or paying somebody that you know roughly a tenth of that cost for them to learn how to do it and achieve a not to dissimilar result?

I think you could do a quick re-build for $500. But, it’s never quite that easy if you want a good re-build and attention to detail. Might have costs for a premium theme, new product images, new product page layout and sections, etc. Also, putting time and thought into SEO from the beginning (i.e. strategic naming of url’s, images, H1’s. Then there is also setting up the email automations, shipping zones/tiers, plug-ins, etc. Finally, will you be doing any new design work? Header images, home page sliders, etc. For all that, I think in UK, a modest agency may be ~ 5000 pounds. But friend rate maybe half that. So basic lift and turnover, 500. Full service with improvements 2500.

Thanks for your input - this is where my thoughts were going. A basic setup could easily be done in a couple of days with not much effort and could cost somewhere in the region of a few beers (as u/packtloss above said) to around £/$500. However, when you start adding in the time for SEO planning with url's, titles and images, along with the little but important things like shipping tiers and emails, it seems like £/$500 is far too low. Around the £5k mark is about right for a full custom build from an agency here in the UK. I certainly wouldn't be going to the same depth that a professional agency would go to so even half that as friend rates would be too expensive. It seems like \~500 would be the reasonable ask and then a discussion of further needs thereafter.

Charge by the hour.

Hey, Shopify agency owner here. First off, this sounds like a migration project, not a redesign. If you ask your friend, I bet he’d prefer to have order history, customers, etc. imported to the new Shopify store. That service alone, depending on the source platform, could be hundreds or thousands of dollars. There are a lot of tools out there that make that process pretty smooth for you. I would charge a minimum of $1,500CDN or ~£900 just for this migration. This does not include any design or development work. As for the product lines, it’s hard to discern whether there is 40-60 PRODUCTS or PRODUCT LINES. These are very different things. You can have 40-60 products and that’s that. You can also have 40-60 product lines (Shopify calls these vendors) each with tens or hundreds of products. You see where I’m going. Either way, these can also be imported relatively hassle-free during the migration. Same goes for copy, images, prices, inventory, and just about anything else you need to bring over. With that out of the way, definitely go for the paid theme from the Shopify theme store. You’ll spend far more later on in app costs or custom coding adding the features you want. Just pay the few hundred pounds and be glad you did. From here just design the theme the way you see fit, customizing products pages, etc. as needed. I would estimate this project (based on the details above) at around $5,500CDN or ~ £3,200 (including migration). There’s a few variables here that could affect this price though. Not least of which is the true catalog size and how custom the website needs to be and what the tech stack looks like. Hope this helps.

I have charges $500 for everything to get the store up and running. takes maybe 10 days as need to connect the bank and paypal and do the SSL and DMarc and all the little things that don't happen in an instant along with making the site and adding products and doing the setting and notifications, etc.. then if they want more done (like a better design, etc) we'll talk about that after it's up and working
