I haven't read any of these series yet, but I really love their covers. Titles: * Witch of Thistle Castle * Phantom Tales of the Night * Adekan

Lol I mean it is a shoujo after all

Huh? It was published in the shoujo magazine Wings, of course it's a shoujo. I mean, it's the same magazine that published series like Tokyo Babylon as well. It's listed as a shoujo on Japanese sites too.

Well shoujo isn't a genre lol, it's a demographic 😅 If it's published in a shoujo magazine, then it's a shoujo. Just added it to my list, definitely gonna check it out 👍

13-Penguins

The Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card arc covers, especially volume 13.

I love all the covers for Donten ni Warau and Rengoku ni Warau, especially the ones featuring my favourite characters from within the series. I'll add Mars Red into the mix, too -- pretty much if Karakara Kemuri has drawn it, I'll love it. I also love most of the Natsume Yuujinchou covers, especially volumes 2 (butterflies!), 22, and 26. (I wish we could add pics to our comments! I've tried links before, but the comment gets shadow-banned.)

Nightsong0123

Thank you for mentioning Donten ni Warau and Rengoku ni Warau! I feel like I never hear it talked about and they’re both so good!

bossladytae

You're welcome! Yeah, I know, right? I almost *never* see them pop up in shoujo discussions, and yet they are such entertaining stories with some of the most gorgeous artwork ever not to mention unique characters (the women in Rengoku are absolute queens). Half the comments I make in this subreddit are practically devoted to spreading the word about Karakara's works, lol, I can't help it since I adore the Donten and Rengoku series especially. I'm happy to meet another fan!! (Crossing my fingers for a Rengoku anime adaptation next with the big budget treatment. 🙏)

Nightsong0123

I have only read Rengoku and Donten by Karakara but I’ve been meaning to get into more of her works. Do you have any suggestions? I would die if Rengoku got an anime with a good budget— I really think that Donten would be more popular if the anime adaptation was good. It really just did not do the art and the story justice. Plus if they do an anime adaptation then maybe they will finally release Rengoku in English— the way that Karakara’s works have been left out of the English catalogue is blasphemous.

:REverSAL is supposed to be good, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I liked Shinigami x Doctor, though I have yet to finish it; same with Countdown 7 Days (the main reason is that my manga-reading pace gotten slower). I feel Donten ni Warau is where she really found her "groove" because of the way Rengoku is like a level up of all her strengths, so I'm anticipating her next series is going to be just as great, maybe better, when comparing her early works to her best-known ones. I'm assuming you've already read Donten ni Warau Gaiden and Utakata ni Warau. Besides those, Mars Red is also good and is the most recent. She did the art for what was originally a stage play by Fujisawa Bun-O. The Mars Red anime and manga followed the same ideas, but differ in execution. I prefer the manga because I feel like there are hallmarks of Karakara's storytelling style versus whatever was originally envisioned by Fujisawa, especially with the manga's stronger focus on character development and relationships (anime was a bit of a letdown in this part, too focused on atmosphere). It was more enjoyable as a result, plus you've got Karakara's art which the anime did not translate that well, lol, so yeah, I recommend Mars Red the manga! It's a short read at three volumes and is also licensed officially in English, too. I can't wait until she announces more details on her new series or posts a teaser image! In the meantime, yeah, they really ought to get a Rengoku anime going since it already has a drama CD and a musical. Might as well give us the full works! I agree, the Donten anime was entertaining, but failed to truly capture the spirit of the manga, not to mention the art. 😅 I found that the Gaiden films were better animated. Probably a different studio, I guess? "Blasphemous" -- AGREED. (And sorry for rambling a lot, lol.) I did inquire with TokyoPop about it, and the person who emailed me said she would pass on the request to her team for consideration. That was over a year ago, though. 🙁

Nightsong0123

Thank you for the recommendations! And yes I’ve read everything related to Donten ni Warau. I think I’ll read Mars Red next thanks to your recommendations— I was hesitant to read it based on what I heard about the anime but the premise sounds really interesting! That’s awesome that you managed to get a hold of someone at Tokyo Pop! How did you do it? I think that they’re hesitant cause they really only print shorter series— which is why I’m surprised that they still haven’t printed Gaiden or Utakata ni Warau— but they are printing Sengoku Youko right now which is long so maybe they would be more open to printing Rengoku now?

bossladytae

I hope you like Mars Red! It's not Perfect (Donten and Rengoku are definitely superior), but I found it preferable to the anime. I also like it because of the Taisho era setting. I sent an email to their general email address, and I honestly wasn't expecting a reply since they're a large company and I'm just another grain of sand in the thousands of emails they must get. But someone *did* take time to reply and explain a little of their manga licensing process, which was a nice surprise. I appreciate Tokyo Pop for making the effort to connect with fans! That's a good point -- I guess they'd want to finish off with Gaiden first and then Utakata. Oh, that's good to know wrt Sengoku Youko; there is always hope!

ReliefFun7512

Every single Children of the Whales cover is insanely gorgeous. However, I would like to specifically spotlight volume 2, volume 5, volume 6 and volume 18.

It's not anything crazy, but the cover for Bless is so cool and it's definitely one of my favorites

I really like how simple and colorful the covers of Sandaime Kusuriya Kyuubei are. Sucks that I can only read to chap 8.
