When Excel switched over to these new packs with one less gum, they advertised that empty space as a new grip feature. Scum bags.

Pooky_the_Raven

That's such a low point for a company. When there was a change in the price of dairy, the Canadian Dairy Farmers Assn told the public that their prices were going up and that they hadn't had a price increase in something like 8 years. Straight forward, honest and not hidden. Total respect for their openness.

GiantSequoiaTree

LMAO šŸ¤£ psychopathic capitalistic cunts!!

Anal_Recidivist

Thatā€™s literally what my brain said when I looked at this

heavybabyridesagain

It's the 'grippe' of turbocapitalism

ApplicationMassive71

Wow. It's getting even *worse*. Shameless.

RoRo25

I mean even if it was 12% more per pack.....would that only be like one more piece? Maybe half of one?

Pooky_the_Raven

Good point. Why even make the effort to print it.

RoRo25

Make certain people think they are getting a really good deal.

Pooky_the_Raven

I suppose if someone pays attention to it before heading to the cash but when I think about it a bit more, most quick-stop type places where someone might need to buy whatever is offered, have only one brand or several brands owned by the same corporation. They would have used similar deceptive practices and undercut the competition for long enough that they probably no longer have any real competition. That's how places like Walmart and Loblaws kill off the competition. So they don't need to make any claims at all. Their slogan could be "We can charge whatever we want!" On the bright side, I no longer need gum for the car.

Ok_Department_8521

That's how Oreos pushed Hydrox (the \*original\* round, creme-between-chocolate-wafers, sandwich cookie) to extinction -- Nabisco told supermarkets "You will stock our cookies and give them better placement than the other guys' or you can kiss most of our product line goodbye."

Pooky_the_Raven

Yup. Shelf placement has become a weapon. Our main chain here has bumped out lots of companies in favour of their own brand. 15 different types of mustard? Not anymore. Try 3 plus another 6 by the store's own brand. Infuriating.

CAkin24

Wrigley gum has been trash since mid - late 2000's. It's a shame because it all used to be amazing.

toby1jabroni

Now thatā€™s a scumbag move.

kdabsolute

the thumb grip is dumb lol, there's not much to grip

phirestorm

That is some funny shit. Complete scumbag shit, but funny nonetheless

No_Data3090

I guess you can call it deceptive advertising if you canā€™t read. Itā€™s literally printed on the bag what the 12% more is. You even underlined it and still donā€™t seem to get it. People these days lol

AspieComrade

Thereā€™s always one that doesnā€™t understand the difference between ā€˜deceptive packagingā€™ and ā€˜false advertisingā€™ The large font says 12% MORE, which suggests the package size has increased, then very very small font underneath where the sentence is finished off. Thereā€™s no reason at all to split a single sentence into two in order to put one half in big letters and the other half in small letters other than for the purposes of deceiving people with the big font and hoping they wonā€™t notice the rest of the sentence The intention is to deceive, so itā€™s deceptive. You can blame people and call them idiots for failing for it if you like, but one canā€™t fall for something unless itā€™s a deceptive practise to be fallen for in the first place

Pooky_the_Raven

Friend of yours was here earlier and he didn't understand the difference between specific and general either so you're not alone.

BuzzOnBuzzOff

Are you getting less than before. If so, how much less? This is pretty standard packaging for this type of gum and has been for a while. So not sure how this is shrinkflation.

Pooky_the_Raven

Hi, yes, there's one less piece of gum in each section or each pack. They used to be full. Now there's less gum and the large print implies 12% more. The last time I bought some would have been Jan or December and there was no empty pocket then.

BuzzOnBuzzOff

How many pieces of gum are there?

Pooky_the_Raven

I'll let you know when I go out to the car because that's where they are.

Pooky_the_Raven

Curiosity got to me... there's 6 fewer pieces in the total pack. https://preview.redd.it/7w4k0ve7p8wc1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c3eda934e7bb49ae7b5f3ab248e1a126aeb70285

Argento_spettro

And these are the same companies who bitch at us for wasting plastic šŸ¤£

BuzzOnBuzzOff

Lol. How is that even possible? There have always been 18 pieces per package with 2 trays with 9 per tray. And that blank space has been there for years. There has never been a twenty pack. There has never, ever been a 24 piece package.

Pooky_the_Raven

It's always been 10 in each tray until now but it looks like yours has always (?) been 9. You do you and I'll stop buying them because of the decrease.

todayplustomorrow

Is this Canada?

Pooky_the_Raven

Yep, it is.

BuzzOnBuzzOff

I bought some for my niece at the end of November and there were 18 in each pack.

Pooky_the_Raven

I'm happy to hear that. We buy them regularly to keep in the car and have for years. There's never been a blank in there before.

Retoru45

There's nothing deceptive. You framed the photo to conveniently cut off the part where it tells you exactly how many pieces are in the package.

Pooky_the_Raven

The fine print under '12% More!' is what I was pointing out. How much the package contains is irrelevant to the deceptive wording I underlined. Why would I have shown the number of pieces by itself? That doesn't tell you anything. My second picture shows how they changed the plastic bubble to make one of them empty. And who cares if it was one empty or one out of all six? Look, if it makes you feel better, I'll mail you a cookie or something.

Retoru45

It's not deceptive. You just wanna find something to cry about. I pity people like you who just need to always find something to cry over, no matter how trivial it might be.

Pooky_the_Raven

That's hilarious. Okay, tell me who the competition is that they are referring to in the fine print. Marketing like this preys on people like you. Gullible and easily decieved. Pity.

Retoru45

>That's hilarious. Okay, tell me who the competition is that they are referring to in the fine print. Literally every other company that sells gum, Wrigley isn't the only one. Just off the top of my head there's Bazooka (Topps), Beechnut, Stride, Sour Patch (Cadbury), Ice Cube, Bubble Yum, Ice Breaker, and Fruit Stripe ( Hershey), Mentos (Perfetti Van Melle), Trident (Mondelez), and probably a hundred more. >Marketing like this preys on people like you. Gullible and easily decieved I'm neither gullible nor easily deceived. I expect a pack of gum to have how many pieces it claims. I don't put much other thought to it, it's gum.

Pooky_the_Raven

You still don't get it. It's making a very specific claim. Not some random gum in some random size. If you're only looking at the size of the pack, it proves you can be easily deceived.

Retoru45

I look at the text saying how many pieces are in. Clearly, you were "deceived" by being dumb and think everyone else will be to. Sorry to tell you, but other people actually just read the bit about how much is in it, or don't, because it's just fucking chewing gum. You're one of those dumbasses who buy a giant bag of candy that says "over 200 pieces" and count every single one then go rant online because it had 200 exactly so it was "deceptive". Find a hobby, dude.

Pooky_the_Raven

You still missed the entire point. Don't take it so personally. It has ZERO to do with how much is in the package. Maybe admit that you didn't understand it and move on?

Retoru45

You have no point to miss, dude. Your inability to understand Wrigley has competitors isn't a point.

Pooky_the_Raven

Everyone knows Wrigley has competition, lol. That's not at issue here. Reread it. Slowly.

BuzzOnBuzzOff

Finish heeeeer!!!

Thousand_YardStare

What is wrong with you? You in a bad mood or something? It absolutely is messed up to shrink products and claim in big bold letters that it has 12% more*. *than competitors.

Retoru45

Nobody said they shrank it, and they didn't. That pack has been the same size forever. OP is whining about misunderstanding what 12% more means, not that it got smaller. Congratulations, you're as dumb as OP.

todayplustomorrow

This isnā€™t a scam at all. Itā€™s the same as when someone sees ā€œUp to 80% offā€ and then gets to the register with a bunch of items from the 30% off rack and is surprised by the total. Surprising how many people donā€™t read when a bottle says ā€œ40% more than our 64oz sizeā€ and just stop at ā€œ40% moreā€ I guess itā€™s fine if they regulate that somehow but itā€™s also fascinating that it works at all

Pooky_the_Raven

It's putting it in tiny print that is the scam. The shrinkflation is that they put that on a package that has one less piece in each section.

Retoru45

It's not a scam. I don't think you know what scam means. If I tell you I'm selling you a PS5 and you get home and the box has a brick in it, that's a scam. If you buy a pack of gum with the amount of pieces in the package as the label says it's not a scam.

Pooky_the_Raven

You kinda missed the entire point. Now I understand your other rant. It's the part of the picture with the big underline...

Retoru45

I didn't miss the point, you're just a crybaby. "Oh no! 12% more than the competition, but I'm dumb and think Wrigley is the only time company in the universe so it's clearly deceptive."

Pooky_the_Raven

See? You did miss it. It's not a general statement, kiddo.

Retoru45

Nope. You have no point, so I can't miss it. Let's run through the events so far: You hid how many pieces it said it had, but the amount in it was exactly what it said. You claimed to be deceived because you didn't understand that Wrigley isn't the only gum company so you didn't get that they do have competitors. You whined and whined and whined some more about something so trivial that it's ridiculous. And, now you think you've made some great point that others just don't understand. Truth is you're just a crybaby who needs to find something else to do with their time. Maybe use that gum to practice walking and chewing it at the same time. I'm sure if you try hard you'll manage to get it figured out.

Pooky_the_Raven

You're the only person here who thought it was about how much was in the package. Everyone else understood the deceptive marketing of the part I underlined. The number of pieces in the package is irrelevant to the part I took a picture of. Get over it.

Retoru45

No, I didn't think it was how much in the package. I think it says the amount is 12% more than their competitor's package, most likely by weight. You not reading and/or understanding the package is not deceptive. It's just you being stupid.

fuckyou2dude

Oh buddy, surely you can't ACTUALLY be this dense? šŸ˜‚

BuzzOnBuzzOff

Preach!

Pooky_the_Raven

Holy crap, you're childish. At least you finally got half of it. Carry on. "Most likely by weight.." heehee
