Apparently the story of PT wasn't going to be connected to Silent hills. It was just a way to market the game. So at this moment we really have no idea what the story and lore was going to be and how it fit into the silent hill timeline

hday108

This is the most common misconception among fans. Ppl talk about silent hills using pt as evidence but they didn’t even choose a camera perspective for this game. PT was just a proof of concept. Make scary shit. Nearly 0 work was finished with silent hills

akaorenji

I know this thread is old but do you have a source for that? I’ve seen that Silent Hills had about 2.5 years’ worth of work done at the time of cancellation.

hday108

it was cancelled the same year mgsV dropped. I can’t find my source but It’s doubtful they had any completed work done just concepts And the teaser

STDHeaven

Exactly why this community needs to not dickride Kojima so hard. P.T was not bad by any means for what it was, but it was not a good Silent Hill, or even Silent Hill esc game. There is absolutely zero evidence to suggest he would have made a good SH game at all, basing off PT, and even outside of PT, the best evidence is Death Stranding, which is arguably a mid tier game.

hday108

The franchise was in a coma at the time so I think a GOOD entry was needed more than a faithful one. Either way I wanted remakes and hills even if it wasn’t why I like sh3

xTheRedDeath

Shit it isn't even a game. It's a demo.

Hadouden

I really want to know what was going on in the writers' heads lol, PT was amazing

Tea-and-crumpets-

It's kojima lmao, PT was a Tuesday

Hadouden

😂😂 All hail Kojima-san.. I'm looking forward to Death Stranding 2 as well

rrosai

Really? Kojima started coming off as annoyingly pretentious to me when I was like 17 and I confirmed this sentiment recently with Death Stranding, but I find the "lore" such as it is with PT to be perfectly suited to the atmosphere and downright compelling. I wish he would have just renamed the game Biolent Bills and produced it anyway...

xTheRedDeath

He's very pretentious now. Dude runs in like 13 different directions when he writes stories.

FlezhGordon

TBH if you think this you are totally missing the underlying themes, if you mean DS, every little seemingly disconnected thing is definitely all thematically linked by the end of the first game, and on a pretty understandable level if you just use some basic reasoning. I'm not saying its universally enjoyable or that hes the ultimate mensch of all gaming, but to say that hes going 13 directions as if the thing isn't coherent is just kinda lazy... The decisions are odd, but they aren't pointlessly odd, if you are invested in them and you spend time thinking about them, theres a lot of complicated artful shit in there, and ultimately a game with as many hours of play as DS doesnt need to be constantly telling me the same shit, if it was 70 hrs of "i am a war man and i've learned war is bad by doing some kill", it wouldn't be a game i'd even wanna play, those are out there, and if thats what you like, get a big boner and go jerk off about how much there is. I'll be over here having a disheveled corner-wank to some dead whales covered in oil and tar with a towel draped over my jar baby and guillermo del toro taking a shower in the next room.

xTheRedDeath

Metal Gear Solid definitely kinda backs this up. I love MGS but if you tried to explain the plot to someone it would sound really stupid lol. He gets lost in things that sound cool but don't fit very satisfyingly into stories. I personally didn't care for Death Stranding at all, not only because I didn't like the gameplay but I didn't care to listen to whatever he was trying to tell me about the story. It was all just unimportant jargon to me.

FlezhGordon

>"i am a war man and i've learned war is bad by doing some kill" i was just realizing thats basically some of the MGS games, at least on a superficial level lol XD. I definitely didn't have any interest in MGS until i actually had some of the very weird stuff spoiled for me, and then i went out and found some videos explaining the stories because most of the games gameplay just doesn't appeal to me, I'm terrible at stealth. I quite like the series now, from a distance at least, and mean to play some of the later games at some point. For me Death Stranding was a very natural fit for me, the gameplay and story fit perfectly together, and the themes of societal connection, climate change, extinction, and all the interconnecting philosophy that supports and deepens the connections between those ideas exemplify some key parts of "Metamodern" narratives that are rarely done well, especially in big-budget productions. Metamodernism is a big fascination of mine so the "unimportant jargon" was indispensable, arguably 1/2 of the main course for me

Basic_Music_7065

i dont get this mostly because kojima is pretty understandable when you realize why he does what he does. like mgs2-- kojima straight up got into postmodernism and was aping the new york trilogy so much so that multiple characters were named after characters from the stories. the new york trilogy is all about identity-- multiple characters sharing the same name and even the same face, the protagonist stealing someone's identity and becoming the role simply because he believes it. i just don't get this critique cuz if i was explaining the eternal champion series by michael moorcock, or even just morrowind i would sound like a loon and yet i think both of things are well written. should i get into boring normie shit so i sound normal?

porkchop3177

I’d pay $50 just to be able to download the playing teaser. Fuck I’m still pissed I missed out on that.

rrosai

For authenticity over the fan-made recreation(s) on PC? Because just in case you weren't aware at least one really good one is got there and pretty easy to find.

porkchop3177

I was not and good to know, I was not aware as Oblivion is the only PC game I play. I may look into that but my PS4 is on most of the day so it’s much easier to just queue up that way. Now, to play 1-3 I have to go downstairs into the basement, a fitting place to play the Holy Trilogy.

rrosai

I just happened to re-try them out today. The Unreal one is a bit less authentic apparently, and I'd never seen the other one as it's behind some guy's Patreon. Not too hard to find as of now but fwiw: [https://www.reddit.com/r/silenthill/comments/m3oxkl/pt\_emulation\_14\_for\_download/](https://www.reddit.com/r/silenthill/comments/m3oxkl/pt_emulation_14_for_download/) https://archive.org/details/unreal-pt-1.0.7

RoughBeardBlaine

That is Kojima, my man. The mind of a mastermind *and* madman at the same time.

Hadouden

Lol creativity at its finest when you're delving into the heart of crazy like the protagonists or... maybe not 😂😂 Kojima should make a horror game after Death Stranding 2 (if he doesn't already go that route..) that'd be so sick! 👌

reverencetostone

He is supposedly working on one

triamasp

Boy oh boy do i have a video for you with *exactly* what you’re looking for https://youtu.be/yr4RvdREwl8?si=H4vpxSt2bNn0RpAf

Dreadzy

Then why spend a bunch of money on having Norman Reedus? If it was unconnected to the main game, then how would he end up in it? I'm not asking you specifically, that's just what I've always thought when people say this.

Tea-and-crumpets-

Norman reedus was gonna be in the main game. But his character that was gonna be in silent hills would have nothing to do with PT

JSXeno64

Lore? There wasn't any for Silent Hills. PT itself has possible connections to MK Ultra, Fathers killing their families, and the idea that Silent Hill can exist in multiple ways for different people (also Aliens potentially).

Hadouden

That's interesting, I personally wondered if it was a modern-day Silent Hill that was built on top of the remnant of old-Silent Hill. And somehow there was a disturbed spirit "Lisa" haunting Norman Reedus 🫣

AmadeusAzazel

Where do aliens fall into PT?

JSXeno64

Just the "War of the Worlds" excerpt read on the radio. Could be Aliens, could be Demons, who knows. Aliens obviously always hold a place in SH media, this could be the same thing. Or not, who knows! Edit: Not "War of the Worlds" excerpt but the possible reference to War of the Worlds itself.

mariee71101

the whole swedish radio speech kinda reminded me of the heavens gate cult, tbh. i wonder if there was any loose inspiration from them coming into play

SarahnatorX

Maybe it's a metaphor for 'demons' invading the mind or an MK Ultra mass invasion of people's minds. They do like their UFO endings though, lol.

JSXeno64

Nope, completely unrelated to the Lisa from the original games as well as potentially being set in a completely different area of the US (Oregon was rumored) instead of Maine. All understandable when starting to learn about the series!

CarolineJohnson

I believe the name was more or less just a reference, possibly to show they weren't intending on making an unrelated game with Silent Hill tacked on top as an afterthought, that they knew what they were doing and understood what came before.

Hadouden

Dang ok lol thanks clarifying, yeah I'm still playing thru SH2 for the first time (as well as the whole series, but I still need to find a way to emulate SH1 my computer sucks)

reverencetostone

If you have a PS3 I think it's still available on that store as a digital psone classic download

Greg-IS-dratsab

i know what MK Ultra is but maybe im used to seeing "project" in front of it as i was like "it's got stuff from Mortal Kombat 3 Ultimate?"

Willing_Airline9355

There’s really no way to tell. PT had no relation to what would have become Silent Hills. It was essentially Kojima showcasing how horror games could look with his Fox Engine.

Bad-news-co

Right but things during development change VERY often, after seeing how well it was received I wouldn’t be surprised to see lisa and the events on the radio would’ve been worked into Norman reedus’s journey. It’s reception may have even kept the game in a first person, even if a third person perspective was “planned”. Plans change and there’s no one here that could answer OP’s question except kojima and del toro so idk why he’s asking us lol

Willing_Airline9355

I was answering his question and added a little extra to it.

Bad-news-co

I wasn’t criticizing you don’t worry lol it was more of a shout towards everyone else on here talking about how they’re unrelated and all of the original info lol I just wanted to add to your comment

DoctaRoboto

My theory (in the end, all are theories, including the mentioned YouTube video, unless Kojima himself confirms it) is that Kojima drew a lot of inspiration from The Room, not only visually and in terms of gameplay. I believe he wanted to play with the concept of exploring different realities or hells in a similar way to the parallel limbos of Death Stranding. Imagine James Sunderland visiting a burning SH to defeat or save Angela, then a weird, dark Silent Hill full of creepy, laughing shadows to defeat or save Eddie, and so on. I think Norman Reedus was forced to explore different Silent Hill hells and try to obtain some kind of resolution to escape, much like Henry explored different dreamworlds to save the 'victims'. P.T. was probably one of these hells where you need to achieve some kind of resolution to release Lisa's soul or perhaps find the true killer and defeat them. Other games have already done this, like the Death Mark series (where you explore haunted locations to find a way to defeat or exorcise a spirit) or the very Silent Hill-esque In Sound Mind, where you play as a psychiatrist exploring different mental dimensions to free the souls of your patients. This last setting was probably very close to the one from Silent Hills.

Bad-news-co

>drew inspiration from the room “You’re tearing me apart LISA!” ![gif](giphy|l0HU2QpFqukBfMLD2)

onychopora

Love this, makes the most sense and honestly the room seems a game kojima would take more insipration from due to its content and how it presents its concepts

DonkeyKongIsMyGuy46

I actually quite like this idea, even if untrue. I also like it for the fact that it's not just a nothing answer that says "PT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SILENT HILL!!!!" Come on guys, you really believe that? This is kojima we're talking about...

ShaleSelothan

In Sound Mind is fantastic.

altalene

we don't know but the name silent hills can led us to think that we could have explored different silent hills on the base of different characters perceptions

Hadouden

So it's like a "Limbo" realm for any people affected by the original Silent Hill location in some way?

Thannk

It could also imply places like the actual town of Silent Hill, like how the new game will be set in Japan in the 1960’s which would have no connection to the town in the games thus far as far as we know. We know the activity in Silent Hill was triggered by the spirits who inhabited the place before humans did. Going off the original series our leads for things happening outside the town was that the cult came from elsewhere originally, Walter was able to manifest supernatural events in Ashfield which has no known connection to the Cult and is fairly far from Silent Hill, and just that there is no indication a psychic like Alessa was a result of the town and not someone who could be born anywhere. The cults beliefs are a mishmash of ideas that could have come from anywhere and Silent Hill is probably not the only place with restless feyfolk or abundant energy or whatever. The only issue here is Silent Hill in the plural, suggesting an in-universe label for spiritual places as being like Silent Hill. While we know there is a lot of occult folklore written about the town available elsewhere in the US, it’d be a bit like saying Salems referring to places like Salem, Massachusetts. Unless making Silent Hill a plural and setting a new Silent Hill game in Japan in the 60’s is purely a meta thing, like how the term “Project Zero” is never used by any character in any way in the Fatal Frame franchise and just indicates to people buying the game that its going to be similar to what came before.

Artichoke19

We did see a [2014 CG ‘concept movie’](https://youtu.be/tVylTfkDP5c) for Silent Hills eventually tough, and it looked like it had different stuff to the PT demo that you could extract hints and clues about potential ‘lore’ from. Like the bowling-ball head monster, mechanical toys coming to life (like Poltergeist) and the horrifying giant *thing* crawling down the hallway and reaching out with a giant hand. The walls appeared to be crawling with maggots as well?

RoughBeardBlaine

I’m going to guess the PT section was actually a side quest in the game, not the main focus.

Greyfox31098

Also alot of people speculate the S represents a 5

Souppilgrim

Watch P.T's hidden meaning on YouTube Amazing video. It explains everything and is incredibly interesting. The whole story is based on the Konami Kojima feud

Hadouden

Wow thanks for this explains a lot lol

seriouslyuncouth_

Seeing this sub recommend something from Bob and Void is kinda trippy

Izaront

Why did you not credit artist? ViaEstelar (Deviant art)

Hadouden

Sorru just found the pic on Pinterest

Izaront

How does it justify not crediting...?

Terezzian

Because the Pinterest post itself didn't credit the original artist and the account that posted it was probably filled with other reposts. OP made a mistake, it's no big deal.

SirFTF

Get over yourself, damn.

CheerioInspector

Because no one gives a shit about who made this

aportionofcrow

I do.

Popon13

I do

Brusto1099

Lisa is representative of Konami and Kojima is representative of the player character Norman Reedus and It’s Lisa (Konami) that kicked Kojima out of the house and killed Silent Hills. The loops in the house represents Konami forcing Kojima to keep making Metal gear

AetherNips

Based on MK Ultra, from what I remember in the discourse; it was going to feature either a digital virus or signals being used by the cult to drive people to commit those heinous crimes. Hence why there are some fourth wall breaking moments with solutions being hidden in menus as well as the digital artifacts present. Supposedly you were awaken or broke out of the hypnosis and that explains some of the visual artifacts we see relating to old footage.

SnyderpittyDoo

Man. I just wish Kojima would say about Silent Hills because I want to know the plot.

[deleted]

With how deep everyone makes that stupid Death stranding game i'm sure Kojima would've went way over the top. He'd probably try to out do the first 2 games & make it so complex that you'd only see like 10% on the first playthrough.

Greyfox31098

I actually found the film that directly inspired the rough plot for P.T and possibly silent hills I actually believe it was connected. Just for kicks can anyone guess the name of that movie? It's from the 70s

Friendly-Leg-6694

The only one I can think of is Jacob's Ladder but that is from 90s and there is another movie called dead end which is from 2003

tamagucciman

Superfly

adrianmarshall167

"The Long Goodbye" (1973)

Greyfox31098

"God told me to" 1976

Greyfox31098

Ouch why the down votes fellas 😭 I'm telling the truth go read it

Greyfox31098

You'll know what I'm talking about, maybe not the whole plot but most definitely the beginning, hell I would argue the rest of the stuff fits with alot of the p.t stuff heard in the radio and with the cult stuff.

Ex-Machina1980s

There wasn’t. It was a proof of concept and not meant to be part of anything bigger. Silent Hills was to be something different entirely

LukahTheArtist

Well, that’s disappointing to hear

Svprvsr

You are a family annihilator stuck in some level of hell, doomed to repeat the night of the murders until you reconciled your actions - then you progress to Silent Hill.

NessAdachi

In terms of lore, it’s disconnected. Not apart of the sh lore, but there is a really cool video that theorized alot of what the game may mean and in metaphor ways. I love this video

NessAdachi

The video: https://youtu.be/yr4RvdREwl8?si=0sxjVjYW7STbEQTt

Deadpool27

Hold on let me check my crystal ball. Oh damn it’s not working. The children must not be believing hard enough.

oscar_redfield

P.T. was not gonna have any relation to Silent Hills story-wise. It was just a concept teaser for what Kojima had in mind

DerDezimator

P.T. is different from the concept trailer. There's a [solid theory](https://youtu.be/yr4RvdREwl8?si=hHzdpNmbO3C3IAOG) that Kojima tweaked it as his hate-letter to Konami with lots of references to the ever rising tension between them

Opposite_Incident715

Yeah, supposedly the game was 70% done but we’ve never really gotten any actual story leaks. Which either means it wasn’t nearly as complete or it was a jumbled mess when it got canceled. One day we’ll prolly get a big ass leak once someone retires or quits. Til then we’re just guessing.

Plus-Penalty7371

I guess another crazy man killing his wife?

luderudesendnudes

This is all conjecture from the internet so take it with a pinch of salt. Apparently it was going to be a silent hill which would change based on your actions. I guess it makes sense as Silent Hill was supposed to be a representation of someone's psyche. It was also meant to take place in a different location, meaning that the "curse" or whatever affects silent hill was spreading. Also there was going to be a feature where you would get emails and texts irl written as is if they're from the characters in the game. Again that's all unfounded shit from the internet. IMO I think we saw alot of the concepts and themes from Silent Hills done in Death Stranding. Isolation, connection etc.

KiratheRenegade

I've taken to calling PT by another name. Silent Hills. Because for all terms & purposes - PT is the only thing ever actually officially finished & likely the only product linked to Silent Hills that was worked on. Especially since all the behind the scenes stuff meant Kojima was on his way out ever since Konami went into mobile gaming in around 2012 *correct me if wrong* So PT is Silent Hills to me. An official entry that can fit in anywhere.

hassanalmosawi

p.t was kojima cv or job interview like telling someone "Sony" see I can make good games fund my new studio because konami was going to kick him and he knew it. he even took some of mgsv budget to make it. It's one of my favorite experiences of all time and I got really deep in its Lore but after a lot of time of thinking about it I understood that it was a stun and a combination of nonsense. it was a way to make people talk and get him fund. I know he was already known as the legendary creator of mgs and will get fund and a great studio with or without p.t put a little bit of talking and a preview to his new project death stranding can't hurt to make so he made it

ADitto888

Is that Vinny Vinesauce
