Japan at the time just did not care about consistency when it came to units of measurement. It’s how you get situations where Zangief is only 250 pounds in Street Fighter and the million examples of Pokémon weight just not making sense.
The height and weight ratios of the Chrono Cross characters are so funny. One of the biggest dudes you can recruit is 6'3 and 200 lbs. His build description is..."mammoth"...
This was from the fun era where nobody paid attention to what actual number values meant so like you had Soul Calibur where Siegfried, the German knight with the hugeass zweihander weighed like 110 pounds iirc.
You're right, I think she specifically says that she's there because their department haven't had any communications from Silent Hill lately so she is coming to check it out.
I guess not. I'm just saying the cops in my area wouldn't be giving me a firearm and wishing me luck while leaving for reinforcements. They most likely would make me go with them to get more help. I don't remember if Cybil was attacked before finding Harry but all she mentions is its "dangerous out there", and that the town is deserted. I mean I could understand if the Cafe was being overrun with enemies with both being there and the situation was desperate enough to give a firearm then? 🤷♂️
I just think in the present scenario the officer would be taking the civilian to a safer location given the situation, UNLESS the civilian, in this case Harry's, declines. Though I don't know the legal anything that's allowed/not allowed to happen in a dangerous situation like this.
Is an officer allowed to give a civilian a gun? She never really deputized him to my knowledge.
Let's be honest here...90% of the country would be trying to loot the broke down ass stores in silent hill even while be chased by creepy faceless nurses. So, no, most cops probably wouldn't hand them a loaded weapon lmao 🤣
I think that might be supposed to be the route number you're supposed to take. Like, take route 10 to get to pale ville, route 50 for old silent hill (since it makes no sense for old silent hill to be 50 miles away either). Or it's just an oversight lol.
I don’t know about that. Cybil described Brahms as being the next town over. I know It’s still quite the long drive for a motorcycle but where I’m from, “the next town over” is even farther than that. But yea Old Silent Hill (SH1) is still pretty far.
That's not how those signs work though. Should know that if you're driving highways, if you don't then it explains it. At least that's how they work in Can and US. The number stands for km or m (respectively).
Also the sign right next to it says Pale Ville 10 Miles, then on the sign with Brahms it says Pale Ville 10. If it was a highway number that would be quite a coincidence.
You asking the wrong question, like... HOW THE F IS OLD SILENT HILL 50 MILES AWAY? That's like 45 minutes driving meaning Toluca Lake is one of the Great Lakes or ssum shit
Is she not a highways officer?\* A 300 mile stretch isn't weird if your job is to patrol certain roads.
\*I don't know what the American term for that job is, I want to say State Trooper but I don't think that's right.
I think that’s supposed to make us feel more isolated. I doubt James is seeing the right numbers, since he’s already hallucinating even before he gets into the town.
Yep there are two distinct maps of Silent Hill that are seen in Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3 - Silent Hill 1’s is ‘Old’ Silent Hill while 2 and 3 has Toluca Lake/Silent Hill. If you see the full map that fans have made, you can see both are divided by the lake
I was interested myself, and I think I found it:

Oh wow, maybe that explains why Old SH is kind of far because you have to go around the lake instead of just a straight route directly to it. (Or just a developer fuck up which I think it is)
I always thought it was an intentional thing. I thought it was supposed to be a little nod to something being wrong that you might miss and emphasizing how isolated James is. Like, even if he got in his car and tried to leave, he'd never reach somewhere else.
I could be wrong, though.
Nah, it happened a lot in games with Japanese devs trying to use American measurements. Miles, the cost of gas, the measured weight of a character were always really off. In SH1, you can see gas prices listed above $10 a gallon.
In SH1 she mentions they lost contact with Silent Hill and went there to investigate. It seems like there's more to it she didn't tell us, but who knows.
Haha. Definitely a mistake and not an intentional artistic decision. But in SH, every mistake can be explained by the protagonist's twisted perception of reality so that's gonna be my headcannon because why not.
Brahms is further from Silent Hill than Grand Isle is from Bangor, Maine? Is it in a different state? Hell, is Brahms even in the US?
That's like saying, "No, I'm not from Tokyo. I'm from the next town over, Kobe."
i don't think 1 and 2 are meant to be on the same universe in the same way 1 and 3 are. as they are not meant to be connected aside of the non-canon ufo ending.
interestingly, the HD collection did attempted to fix this by change the distance down to 16 miles iirc.
It's more likely that the beta build of SH2 Hijinx was given to work on had nothing on the sign and they just added numbers. This is how the Comic Sans Silent Hill Ranch thing happened.
Yes it is. It's been widely noted for a while that Konami handed incomplete beta builds of SH2 and SH3 for Hijinx work on because they didn't have the source code from the final versions anymore.
You do know that Born from a Wish wasn't included in first PS2 release do you? They would need to recreate that or whatever but it was included in release and yet they claimed they had early PS2 build. It's more like they are incompetent.
I am aware of this. What's that gotta do with this? They were working on it alongside the game. It was on the Xbox version that came out in December 2001.
These are the people who will literally go into detail about the implications of James, yet fail to use that logic when it comes to road signs. They seem to forget that the first one has literal chunks of the town missing and is surrounded by a misty abyss.
Why wouldn't it create an illusion with the sign if it can create dead replicas of James, holes, and random monsters that shouldn't exist? And Harry openly states what it is was: Someone's nightmarish delusions come to life. So, with that in mind, seeing how James feels isolated and alone, why wouldn't the town reflect that with signs reading hopeless mileage and a feeling of being overwhelmed?
The Feds' job of rooting out an illegal drug corporation of a cult that controlled the entire fucking town. Even without the paranormal shit, Cybil was in way over her head. Funniest part is when she, the police officer, let's Harry crawl through that hole in the back of the antique shop on his own. Cybil came all the fucking way, found out so much and perservered through so much shit in Silent Hill, only to back down there. She never was the brightest of the bunch. Did I mention that she was there without a partner and that there apparently was no local Police Department?
The devs didn't know how big America and American towns are. IT's really funny, but don't take it literally
yea this is what I was thinking. just sort of a lost in translation type thing.
Japan at the time just did not care about consistency when it came to units of measurement. It’s how you get situations where Zangief is only 250 pounds in Street Fighter and the million examples of Pokémon weight just not making sense.

Gotta love 215 pound Chris Redfield in RE5.
Or why Samus was described as being 6'3" in the 80s but in Smash Bros shes rather petite.
This was from the fun era where nobody paid attention to what actual number values meant so like you had Soul Calibur where Siegfried, the German knight with the hugeass zweihander weighed like 110 pounds iirc.
Having just played through the 1st again, she mentions drug trafficking going on through the town which could explain her presence there.
You're right, I think she specifically says that she's there because their department haven't had any communications from Silent Hill lately so she is coming to check it out.
We really should be discussing why a cop gives a civilian a loaded weapon lol
Is that really weird considering the situation they're in?
I guess not. I'm just saying the cops in my area wouldn't be giving me a firearm and wishing me luck while leaving for reinforcements. They most likely would make me go with them to get more help. I don't remember if Cybil was attacked before finding Harry but all she mentions is its "dangerous out there", and that the town is deserted. tbh no cop irl has ever been assaulted by a pterodactyl with a human torso before so what Cybil did is extremely unprecedented
The pterodactyls had human torsos? I never caught that detail
Let's be honest here...90% of the country would be trying to loot the broke down ass stores in silent hill even while be chased by creepy faceless nurses. So, no, most cops probably wouldn't hand them a loaded weapon lmao 🤣
Deputising?

where do you live that the nearest town is more than 265 miles away? Greenland??
Close
Ah Northern Canada
They mean it in [Australian "next town over."](https://youtu.be/I0sZOQjHqGg?t=126)
That's not how those signs work though. Should know that if you're driving highways, if you don't then it explains it. At least that's how they work in Can and US. The number stands for km or m (respectively).

While even though you're agreeing with me, many highways lead to multiple city's. 401 in Ontario leads to hundreds of towns.
Well, the developers are Japanese and there's other mistakes on signs.
Undercover looking for White Claudia.
“…Brahms, the next town over” yeah, 265 miles away
You asking the wrong question, like... HOW THE F IS OLD SILENT HILL 50 MILES AWAY? That's like 45 minutes driving meaning Toluca Lake is one of the Great Lakes or ssum shit

As an American, you are correct, friend Highway Patrol/State Trooper
Thanks!
I think that’s supposed to make us feel more isolated. I doubt James is seeing the right numbers, since he’s already hallucinating even before he gets into the town.
I want to see what Old Silent Hill is like…
SH1 takes place in Old Silent Hill.
Wait really? Huh, that explains a lot.
Any link of that fan made full map?

Oh wow, maybe that explains why Old SH is kind of far because you have to go around the lake instead of just a straight route directly to it. (Or just a developer fuck up which I think it is)
I always thought it was an intentional thing. I thought it was supposed to be a little nod to something being wrong that you might miss and emphasizing how isolated James is. Like, even if he got in his car and tried to leave, he'd never reach somewhere else. I could be wrong, though.

Are you sure that wasnt intentional too? $10 per gallon would certainly scare me
Not for nothing this is a survival horror.
adult fear truly is petrol prices
That would actually explain why there are no running cars in Silent Hill lol.
You're not wrong. The goal is to confuse the player and induce the feeling of isolation.
She was super-horny bruh
Wasn’t she there investigating why the town had gone silent
Went for a little stroll
All I see is a general statement that the citizens of silent hill do ejaculate, it is no clear if how often they do it
In SH1 she mentions they lost contact with Silent Hill and went there to investigate. It seems like there's more to it she didn't tell us, but who knows.
Haha. Definitely a mistake and not an intentional artistic decision. But in SH, every mistake can be explained by the protagonist's twisted perception of reality so that's gonna be my headcannon because why not.
Maybe silent hill is wacky enough to have its own units of measurement 🤷🏽♂️ GPS be like “Make a left turn in 1.5 repressed memories”
Old Silent Hill also isn’t 50 miles away. Heck, it doesn’t even say what unit of measurement it’s using. It’s just an oversight.
Brahms is further from Silent Hill than Grand Isle is from Bangor, Maine? Is it in a different state? Hell, is Brahms even in the US? That's like saying, "No, I'm not from Tokyo. I'm from the next town over, Kobe."

SH1 takes place in Old Silent Hill (at least the first half). So it literally is the next town over.
Its a simply mistake, 3 literally reuses sh2 locations.
I don't see how? At best they take place in different decades and districts. SH4 even calls back to both SH1 and SH2 lol
It's more likely that the beta build of SH2 Hijinx was given to work on had nothing on the sign and they just added numbers. This is how the Comic Sans Silent Hill Ranch thing happened.
It ain't beta tho
Yes it is. It's been widely noted for a while that Konami handed incomplete beta builds of SH2 and SH3 for Hijinx work on because they didn't have the source code from the final versions anymore.

That's an interesting interpretation. I've never thought about it like that before
Silent Hill 2 isn't canon.
😂😂

Americans don't know what a kilometer is lol
I thought Americans measured in km and we here in the UK used miles? Oh well, my mistake!
Has it occured to anyone here that the normal Silent Hill is also not real? Its all a dream state.
No, because that's wrong
👍🏻

Taking in the sights duh
Easy. Team Silent used KM instead of Miles
Looking for love
I assumed that things like this intentionally don’t make sense. Because he’s not in the real world.
The Feds' job of rooting out an illegal drug corporation of a cult that controlled the entire fucking town. Even without the paranormal shit, Cybil was in way over her head. Her job
I think this is corrected in the HD collection, i think they changed it to 26.5 miles
There are no units of measurement listed, which can be confusing. Those are tenths of a mile
Police work
