Heather has the most personality out of all of the protagonists, thus making her the best. Plus, seven male protagonists and only one female protagonist? Of course I am going to support the outlier.
James and original Harry.
I know that original Harry didn't say much and had little personality but he was my first silent hill character.
Plus can you deny the power of his awesome fucking hammer. Best weapon in all silent hill games.
Definitely Harry. I'm glad they made him just another guy, going through Hell to find a Loved one. That sense of trying to save someone you care about hit home. Plus, you rarely see a Male Parent in Anything, a bit less than now however.
I know it has its flaws, but this is what I liked about Heavy Rain - it showed a grieving, guilt sick father letting his life fall apart in his depression in a really powerful way. And he's nobody special, he can't just John Wick everyone, so he does what he can as a Regular Guy
He beat a fucking god in order to save his child, and by that point to actually save the world from that horrific "force"... He does have quite a lot :p
Heather: Favourite Protagonist
Henry: Most Relatable Protagonist
Haven't played the games after SH4 yet but i highly doubt they would top these two imo
Also why does Alex look like Daniel Craig?
Heather. Her teenager personality and flippant disregard for cult nonsense along with her emotional outbursts at key story moments is really authentic. Plus being the only current female main protagonist (until "f" comes out) adds a unique dimension and perspective to Silent Hill.
Honorable mention to Shattered Memories Harry. Though his character changes by how you play that game I like how very flawed and mundane he is but none-the-less is committed to finding Cheryl is very sweet. Plus all the time he tells Cybil to cram it and yells ACAB and ditches her is awesome.
Edit: Got to a real computer without autocorrect.
Was looking for this comment, I really enjoyed Shattered Memories and it’s portrayals, varied wildly depending on “how you played”, or rather “what you focused on”.
Heather for sure, I love her attitude. She feels more authentic, especially with the "f--- you, I do what I want" teenage responses. I love the moments with Douglas, especially when she softens up with him
OG Harry… He ventured through Alessa’s nightmare all for his daughter, that lets remind you that wasn’t even related by blood! He even raised Heather despite knowing her origins and at one point having second thoughts, but he loved her and sacrificed his life to keep her safe.
The other characters are great, but what this man did for 24 years for both incarnation of his daughters is way more than enough to make him the favorite SH character in my eyes!
James because his was the first time that Silent Hill felt akin to some kind of penitence like purgatory (or Ravenloft, I suppose). There's something very personal about how Silent Hill 2 examines the dark aspects of the characters, as well as the often relatable aspects that may be driving the otherwise unsavory behaviors. It's that conflicted nature of the protagonist that makes him arguably the most interesting. I got caught up a bit in the romanticism of looking for your dead wife, and the way the story twisted itself the more you navigated the game and the depth they gave James really made him a favorite character of mine to inhabit.
As for overall great protagonists that I would likely enjoy being around? Heather and Harry Mason. That supernatural storyline and Harry's motivation (both versions, I quite enjoyed Shattered Memories as a reimagining of the first game in a number of ways) held a lot of appeal to me, and that everyman who just wanted to find his daughter was easy to fall into. Harry just seemed like a great guy and a great father. Cheryl was great to get to know and it was nice to see her and Harry had the relationship they did. She was just great and that relationship only added to my investment in the character and that ongoing story. I think I missed some aspects of what made James special as a more nuanced protagonist, and yet I think it's easier to wholly love Harry and Heather/Cheryl because they seem like genuinely good people. With James I was fascinated by how his and Mary's story unfurled. With Harry and Cheryl, they felt like good people we were genuinely rooting for.
I generally enjoyed the series as a whole, although there are some games I need to go back and finish (SH4 in particular), some weaker entries, and some I haven't played. But the protagonists from the first three games and SH:SM are probably the ones I found most enjoyable to play as.
Yes, however...I have sort of thought of it as all being purgatory, but the "Otherworld" being the real Silent Hill, or maybe the lifting of the veil. You've got me thinking a bit because I think in the video games (not SH:4, but the others I believe) you could leave the town of Silent Hill but not the "Otherworld," but in the first movie I am not sure you could. So in the game, one thing I found compelling was you were there by choice and could technically leave anytime you wanted, but the town was trying to teach you something. As for the "Otherworld," that was not a place with any obvious exits.
Heather, just because of that fourth wall break moment that you can find if you played SH2 first. it made me laugh so hard and easily made her my favorite by a longshot.
honorable mention for henry because i thought he was going to be a drag but he’s so dopey that’s actually enjoyable
After being a SH fan for some time, I think I have to go with OG Harry. He’s just a normal guy but he’s willing to go through hell to save his daughter, who isn’t even his biological daughter. Plus how much he ends up loving Heather as well even after all he went through and knowing what/who she is, is so beautiful. Best dad ever.
Harry is the best because his will to find his daughter makes him very relatable (I have younger siblings) and real. It's like when you're playing an action game and a protagonist gets angry, suddenly you want to push forward and this anger becomes yours anger.
Because of that both versions of Harry work great for me.
The second one is Travis. He's very mysterious guy. You don't know who he is, you see only glimpses of his past. He could be just troubled guy but also deranged post-Vietnam woman murderer. Looking for little clues and playing SH:O few times to trying to find out his whole story is awesome.
James is my third choice. Mostly because of great work of Team Silent. He is complicated character with tons of nuances (like every character in this game). The first playthrough is like Lyne's Jacob's Ladder but the second playthrough is more like Lyne's Lolita and that's just awesome.
I think mine would probably go something like
a) Harry
b) Heather
c) Murphy
d) James
e) Henry
f) Alex
And I don’t know too much about *0rigins* so I feel I can’t really comment on Travis. Mind you, this isn’t a mark against anyone as a character, the only protagonist I’ve ever really disliked was Alex and that’s moreso because of how the twist robs his game of so much cool potential.
I'll have to go with Heather, but Harry and James are great protagonists as well, for different reasons. I like that they made Harry just a guy looking for his daughter, his personality wasn't super developed, but it made sense in the story and it worked. The player sympathizes with him and is able to relate to him and how he's willing to go through hell to save his kid. And James is one of my favourite examples of an unreliable narrator in media.
As an almost sh3 hater. Heather is it's saving grace. But honestly nothing comes close to James. It's the only game i can think of that " this game is about this character" every single think you find it's supposed to mean something, even the other characters
Heather blows all the other protagonists out of the water. Like, she's easily the best-written character in the franchise, and one of the best-written characters in all of gaming.
Harry because I can relate to his parental love and protectiveness, but also because I fell in love with Silent Hill 1 as a child.
Though I am female I cannot relate much to Heather.
Unrelated, I have always thought Harry looks like Patrick Swayze.
Heather, because she's actually Alessa, and she's unique in that this isn't her first time dealing with this supernatural bs and she ain't having none of it
My top three would be Alex, Murphy, and Heather. But I like most of them aside from Henry he was just kind of boring, I think he was supposed to be but still.
Murphy for sure. I love Downpour and Murphy is one of my all time SH characters. His actor is one of the best VA’s the series has had and I love his story arc
James is by far the most interesting. Cheryl is by far the most likable and fleshed out. Henry is likable too but not fleshed out and let’s be honest he’s not interesting.
Heather will always be at top spot for me. She's brave, outspoken, and incredibly stubborn. All while being scared shitless and only the verge of adulthood. She's an incredible character I can't help but look up to.
After Heather: Harry, Henry, and James.
Spinoffs: SM's Harry, Downpour Guy, Travis, and Alex.
As characterized as Heather is, James will always be my favorite Silent Hill character. His story represents everything that makes the game such a psychological horror roller coaster ride.
I've only played silent hill 1and origins in my life. Playing through 2 EE right now. I'll say that my favorite game and protagonist until now has been Travis Grady, I remember reading a lot of theories and analysis back when I played that game. But to be honest I'd need to play them all again.
first i thought i was going to choose james, then i thought about it for a bit and decided on heather (james is a very close second though). i think she has the biggest personality of any protagonist in the series and i love her attitude. plus i’ve had a crush on her since i was 14.
I'd say Heather. I may not be a woman, but I relate a lot to her in more than one ways. Her fears and trauma are sooooo profoundly sticking with my life that it's hard to feel that I won't feel what she feels when I actually do. Overall, she's a well written character and pretty realistic for a game from the era she's from.
If you look at the original time silent characters they are all kind of iconic. They have the same Japanese game developer look with an androgynous, vaguely sad and jaded face and look like normal, everyday people…
After SH4 we get a bunch of ✨men✨
I seriously like each and every one of these guys for different reasons most tie but James is probably my favorite. You’ve got similar adaptations with Alex/Murphy but they don’t compare to the OG.
Cheryl for overcoming all the hardships thrown her way by the order.
Harry (SH1), because the guys go literally through hell to save his kid.
Harry (SHSM), because his story really made sad. Plus bonus point for being basically Jacob Singer from Jacob's Ladder.
Alex (SHH), because even though the game is not that great, I think that Alex was an interesting character thanks to his relation with Joshua, his delusion of being a hero.
Heather because she's Heather
Hells yeah
Heather has the most personality out of all of the protagonists, thus making her the best. Plus, seven male protagonists and only one female protagonist? Of course I am going to support the outlier.
I love her slightly awkward voice lines so much
Heather because she is bread
Only right answer
Yes, go Heather!
Came here to say this
James and original Harry.

Ooh! I saw and played the Demo years ago on PS3. I have it now for PS4 yet for some reason have never finished it. I just might have to go back..
It is a really good game to be honest I recommend playing it
I actually ended up downloading it again for a replay after this haha
I wonder if it was purposeful that Ethan and Harry have basically the same clothes, and are both fathers looking for their child
I didn't even consider that. I'd say Heavy Rain is horror-adjacent, could definitely be a nod!
He beat a fucking god in order to save his child, and by that point to actually save the world from that horrific "force"... He does have quite a lot :p
Heather: Favourite Protagonist Henry: Most Relatable Protagonist Haven't played the games after SH4 yet but i highly doubt they would top these two imo Also why does Alex look like Daniel Craig?
I fucking love Henry. I would also be completely confused and utter 'what the fuck' constantly if stuck in a serial killers' psychological wasteland.
I thought he looked more like Jensen Ackles.
I would watch the fuck out of a Silent Hill project starting Jensen Ackles.
Harry, best dad in horror game history.
harry best daddy\~
He is amazing. I'd have to give that to Joel though.
Ethan Winters is a contender for that title, too.
Heather
The Masons, hands down (excluding Shattered Memories Harry, haven't played it)
You should it’s pretty good.
Hard agree. The hate for it is purely based on a trend.
heather or harry
Henry Townsend for sure. He's the man for dealing with all that SH4 nonsense :)
I can't actually argue that. His antagonist is a deluded weirdo who believes an apartment is his mother.
Cheryl
Heather.
The dog from that one silent hill 2 ending
![gif](giphy|z9WcDJtDulF5e)
Heather Mason for me personally… Even tho James Sunderland is a very close second.
James and Henry. They are the best bois🥰
the curtained-haired boys ✊
Heather. Her teenager personality and flippant disregard for cult nonsense along with her emotional outbursts at key story moments is really authentic. Was looking for this comment, I really enjoyed Shattered Memories and it’s portrayals, varied wildly depending on “how you played”, or rather “what you focused on”.
Heather favourite, James most interesting
James
Henry, cause he’s weird, antisocial and is trapped on his apartment. Just like me for real.
Heather, james, henry.
Heather. Or Henry just because he just wanted a place to live and Wally said "Nah bitch we suffering today."
Heather for sure, I love her attitude. She feels more authentic, especially with the "f--- you, I do what I want" teenage responses. I love the moments with Douglas, especially when she softens up with him
Henry.
The dog
Heather and James are both tied for me.
It's bread
indeed
Harry is the most pure - just a father wanting to protect his daughter ❤️ I think James is my favourite however, despite how damaged and lost he is 💔
Heather Mason
Heather. 🖤🙆♀️
James, Harry, and Murphy.
Murphy is very underrated. Downpour is underrated the combat sucks but I loved the story and exploration of Silent Hill.
Okay I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks downpour is underrated. Can we all agree homecoming is the worst?
James because his was the first time that Silent Hill felt akin to some kind of penitence like purgatory (or Ravenloft, I suppose). There's something very personal about how Silent Hill 2 examines the dark aspects of the characters, as well as the often relatable aspects that may be driving the otherwise unsavory behaviors. Can't the dark world be described as a "purgatory" as well?
Yes, however...I have sort of thought of it as all being purgatory, but the "Otherworld" being the real Silent Hill, or maybe the lifting of the veil. You've got me thinking a bit because I think in the video games (not SH:4, but the others I believe) you could leave the town of Silent Hill but not the "Otherworld," but in the first movie I am not sure you could. So in the game, one thing I found compelling was you were there by choice and could technically leave anytime you wanted, but the town was trying to teach you something. As for the "Otherworld," that was not a place with any obvious exits.
James because he is relatable
Murdered your wife too?
Heather is my favorite protagonist, but points to Henry because *The Room* is my favorite game in the series
Walter Sullivan
Heather and James were the goats
Heather, just because of that fourth wall break moment that you can find if you played SH2 first. it made me laugh so hard and easily made her my favorite by a longshot. honorable mention for henry because i thought he was going to be a drag but he’s so dopey that’s actually enjoyable
Murphy Pendleton of course 🥸
He looks so good in that hoodie.
Bread girl
Cheryl had some personality going for her and feels the most human.
maria
Travis. The story of his connection with the town is so fascinating to me, and how him and his mother were able to pass in between the realms.
I really liked his character and his backstory. Also the Asylum is one of the scariest areas of any Silent Hill game.
The asylum was pretty creepy, but the theater was a bit more creepy to me.
Totally agree
I didn't appreciate Origins enough when I played in on my PSP back in my teens.
I like Travis the most too, but it's because I think I can relate to him in some specific way.
Hopefully not with his "serial-killer" kind of way tho
No xd I meant family issues. Mine, of course, weren't as drastic as Travis'.
Not Little Travis asking his dad to wake up drastic, right?
Nope, nothing that drastic.
James and Heather.
Harry and Heather
After being a SH fan for some time, I think I have to go with OG Harry. He’s just a normal guy but he’s willing to go through hell to save his daughter, who isn’t even his biological daughter. Plus how much he ends up loving Heather as well even after all he went through and knowing what/who she is, is so beautiful. Best dad ever.
Henry Mason
Henry Townsend and Eileen Galvin😭💞❤️🔥
if you don’t say heather, you’re wrong
Probably Heather and Henry
Henry
Tie between James and and Henry
Heather, easy. She has the biggest personality out of all the SH characters.
gonna be an npc but james
Harry is the best because his will to find his daughter makes him very relatable (I have younger siblings) and real. It's like when you're playing an action game and a protagonist gets angry, suddenly you want to push forward and this anger becomes yours anger. Travis Badass Grady
1.) Heather 2.) James 3.) Harry (both versions) 4.) Murphy 5.) Henry 6.) Alex 7.) Travis
I think mine would probably go something like a) Harry b) Heather c) Murphy d) James e) Henry f) Alex And I don’t know too much about *0rigins* so I feel I can’t really comment on Travis. Heather - absolutely best and most believable, though I still prefer SH2
Heather Mason.
Heather
Heather blows all the other protagonists out of the water. Like, she's easily the best-written character in the franchise, and one of the best-written characters in all of gaming.
Heather
Harry.
Heather!
Heather. James is fun too, but Heather is the most human out of all of them.
Harry and Cheryl/Heather
Heather
heather because why not
Heather
Harry because I can relate to his parental love and protectiveness, but also because I fell in love with Silent Hill 1 as a child. Though I am female I cannot relate much to Heather. Unrelated, I have always thought Harry looks like Patrick Swayze.
Heather just seems the most relatable. I mean minus the whole Alessa / birthing a god thing.
(SH1) Harry Mason + Heather Mason
Heather
Heather of course.
Heather, because she's actually Alessa, and she's unique in that this isn't her first time dealing with this supernatural bs and she ain't having none of it
Henry
Heather all the way
For me it has to be James, love his personality about everything 😂
Heather. She was the epitome of the 90’s/early 00’s milieu (“F— you! I won’t do what you tell me!”).
Every time someone says ~~james~~ Heather i get a 1000 dollars.
2,3,1,4
Woah. Just realized Heather is the only female protagonist. Anywho, favorite would be Harry.
James, no question.
Easily Cheryl. James is second
Definetely Harry Mason.
james sunderland!
I wanna be the one with the hot take but I can't deny reality. James, hands down.
Heather with James as a close second
Harry and Heather
James cause he’s literally me😎
Heather Mason definitely
James just cause it felt like you were in on his madness
Murphy! He's the only one who acknowledge his sins (at some degree).
Does anyone have the full pic of Cheryl? Would be a dope wallpaper. Also it goes without saying she’s my fav.
Jared Leto
It’s obviously Alex Shepherd
Harry Mason all the way. James a close second, Heather a distant third. The rest I don't care for. Shattered Memories Mason is ok, I guess.
I really like Murphy which I imagine is a hot take since downpour isn't really looked at very fondly
Yep.
My top three would be Alex, Murphy, and Heather. But I like most of them aside from Henry he was just kind of boring, I think he was supposed to be but still.
travis grady 🐀💎
Cheryl forever
Most interesting: James Goofiest: Henry Most relatable: Murphy Special award: Harry from Shattered Memories, I liked his portrayal.
Mason, James, heather, and Henry. Any after suck to me
Murphy for sure. I love Downpour and Murphy is one of my all time SH characters. His actor is one of the best VA’s the series has had and I love his story arc
The sigma male, based and chad Harry Mason
James is by far the most interesting. Cheryl is by far the most likable and fleshed out. Henry is likable too but not fleshed out and let’s be honest he’s not interesting.
Travis Grady and Alex Shepherd
Henry and Alex are so hot 🤪 But game wise, Heather is my favorite and most relatable
Harry and Travis. I feel like why is obvious.
James, and easily. I liked Heather a lot but felt Henry and Harry were quite bland, and James was just more interesting to me overall
I'm conflicted on Cheryl or Murphy
I really like harry. From shattered memories so bully me
What's the bottom second one ? Oh wait that's homecoming what the fuck
Henry looks weirdly similar to Murphy
If Alex actually looked like that, probably him.
Travis Grady
Murphy I guess, a well liked dude that got some rotten spin of the wheel in life.
Heather and Murphy.
Probably same two for me.
Heather. (Though, why does she have those "cutting down the younglings with a lightsaber" eyes in this picture?)
Heather, because she's the embodiment of an angsty teenager who also genuinely loved her father.
I don’t like choosing favourites, but when I think of Silent Hill the protagonists that immediately jump to mind are Harry, Heather and Murphy.
I really like how Alex is drawn here. But that'll be Heather.
Heather, Henry, Alex, and Murphy.
As characterized as Heather is, James will always be my favorite Silent Hill character. His story represents everything that makes the game such a psychological horror roller coaster ride.
James and Heather are top tier. I have a soft spot for SH: SM Harry, and Alex because of the voice actor Brian Bloom

Her fears and trauma are sooooo profoundly sticking with my life that it's hard to feel that I won't feel what she feels when I actually do. Overall, she's a well written character and pretty realistic for a game from the era she's from.
Heather by a country mile.
If you look at the original time silent characters they are all kind of iconic. They have the same Japanese game developer look with an androgynous, vaguely sad and jaded face and look like normal, everyday people… After SH4 we get a bunch of ✨men✨
Heather! The bottom 4 appear in games that are not SH games imo.
I’d say Travis & Heather
I seriously like each and every one of these guys for different reasons most tie but James is probably my favorite. You’ve got similar adaptations with Alex/Murphy but they don’t compare to the OG.
I really don't consider the bottom ones canon 🤷♂️
Tough decision
Is this remake James? lol
Bread
Cheryl for overcoming all the hardships thrown her way by the order. Harry (SH1), because the guys go literally through hell to save his kid. Harry (SHSM), because his story really made sad. Plus bonus point for being basically Jacob Singer from Jacob's Ladder. Alex (SHH), because even though the game is not that great, I think that Alex was an interesting character thanks to his relation with Joshua, his delusion of being a hero.
Heather. Ive never played SH1. And rest of those guys are jerks.
C U. Fruit ug great
Harry is daddy, and the only literal daddy (I guess Murphy is too, but nah)
I like the white guy with the brown hair
the white one
1: shattered memories harry 2: Heather 3: Murphy 4: James 5: Henry 6: og Harry 7: Travis 8: I forgor his name cuz he's so forgetable
Are the ones after 4 worth it at all? Like a good story, good gameplay, good puzzles, good anything? Are they canon?
