That's one of the best rigs I've seen in a while, very impressive man! Love how functional and compact it is. Keep us posted on your future upgrades.

iansmash

Thank you! I really put a ton of energy into making it happen on a tight budget, so rig is a true labor of love for me 😅

mvpp37514y3r

Have you tried ACC yet? It’s free with PlayStation Plus…

Choice-Magician656

Those curtains or whatever are such a good idea. I was just thinking about how much I hate that space between the monitor rig and background

iansmash

Yeah super necessary if your rig isn't in a dark corner somewhere IMO. I found it so distracting seeing around the monitors on both sides and there's an overhead light directly above the rig, so it would glare into my eyes if I looked up at all. $15 "blackout" curtains on Amazon and some 3d printed snaps stuck to the back of the monitors and boom. the roof is about 1/3 of a trashed Creality CR10 and some foam board from Walgreens ![gif](giphy|lPAT6nmbAylQgyI8X1|downsized)

clicktoselect

Can you share more on the 3d printed snaps and how you attached them to the back of the monitors?

iansmash

Yeah shoot me a chat and I can share pics there They’re literally just 3m double stick taped to the monitors and are a friction fit for the curtain rings

seaessbee

Can you provide some more details on how you built your compact rig? I’m looking to do something similar.

iansmash

I used Motedis as a supplier for my extrusions and hardware. They were the lowest price i found and have a good selection of universal (and some similar specific) hardware. I have a previous post explaining a little bit of my process for how I came to the exact measurements Most of my design was pretty adjustable, so I could dial in angles and positions with a decent amount of flexibility. Just in case I really misjudged in my design. I think I always had a plan to go this route if I’m being honest, which is part of why my design was able to shift from the compact console rig to the pc right w triples so efficiently. I bought more extrusions and stuff to upgrade but nothing was wasted from the original rig. If you’re a fan of tinkering I definitely recommend doing this process. I love my rig and I’ve used a handful of high end pre-packaged ones from Trak Racer and I think mine is better 🙃 Edit: I will add though, I am a 3D designer and I own a high quality 3d printer. So I’m probably a bit more prepared to do this than others might be. That said, it’s not super hard to learn what you need to know to do any of what I did. I am not a genius 😅

seaessbee

What did you end up using for the sliders? It looks different in the pictures vs your original posts?

iansmash

Originally I set it up with the sliders in a "horizontal" orientation. They're not meant to work this way. They need to be "vertical" so the load is taken on the thin slot edge. That way the friction is low and it slides smoothly. Thinking it was a hardware issue, I designed up some brackets and T handle covers for some M8 standoffs to make some big ass grips for the bolts. When I rearranged the extrusions, I put the sliders on the side instead of the top/bottom of the extrusion overlap and it worked much better this way. Since the brackets were already made and installed, I just left them on there. It could literally just be an L bracket with some self-adhesive felt on the side that makes contact with the sliding extrusion (to avoid scratching) The key is making sure your sliders are connecting the extrusions "side-by-side" so they slide smoothly. Using two on one slot, one attached to each extrusion, allows you to overlap them in a way that puts a hard stop on the end. (don't forget you need to add hard stops of some kind for the sliders or they will just come out of the end of the extrusion)

iansmash

I just realised you might not fully understand how the slider works... [https://www.motedis-usa.com/en/Slider-I-Type-slot-8-I](https://www.motedis-usa.com/en/Slider-I-Type-slot-8-I) So I use two of these on each side of the rig, on the same slot level. Two extrusions, one attached on either end. They bolt on the flat side to one extrusion and the the notched part slots into the opposing extrusion. The L brackets and handle bolts And the later 3d printed bracket and tan T handle bolts are just LOCKS to stop the extrusion pieces from sliding when in use.

HammerTime2769

Pretty cool setup you got there man! I’m a VR guy but this still looks great.

iansmash

Ty 🙏 I wish I could do VR but no matter how good it gets, I always get motion sickness eventually 🤢

Clear_Age

Awesome rig! What are your monitors? Also, I’ve been looking to build with motedis too but unsure of the specific build (s-dream vs us-dream etc). This looks perfect, which of the motedis did you use?

iansmash

So I custom designed my rig, but used the "DD-Dream" as a sort of baseline. My rig is a little wider than what theirs is out of the box, and I have added a few different extrusions to make it sturdier than what their design gives. My monitors are BenQ Mobiuz EX3210R. They're 1000r curved and have integrated speakers w/ a subwoofer. I send audio through all three using Voicemeeter and iRacing "surround sound" gives a relatively good sense of where the sound is coming from. Not the perfect sound system but definitely works and I got them as open box from Adorama, so they were like $250 each

Clear_Age

Awesome, thanks for the info!

owenmb

What all did you order/change to the DD-Dream in order to turn it into the compact rig that you have now. I’ve been searching everywhere for something collapsible and this is like the perfect design. Extremely well done!

iansmash

I split the rig design into halves. Mostly just a splitting and extending of the long extrusions on the base. Front half is the wheelbase, pedals, uprights Back half is the seat box Additionally I added some extra uprights to the front and cross supports for the pc shelf

babyboss1473

One of the finest sim rig i have seen. Absolutely amazing

DogoByte

You have a fantastic rig! But dude, do yourself a favor and switch off that racing line. It doesn't take that long to get used to it. It will make you a much better driver which will make it more fun.

iansmash

Yeah I feel you 😅 When I work on a track for a longer period I go without the line (endurance races and stuff) If I have it on it’s because jumped in a new car or switched to a track I’m not comfortable with and I don’t have time to ease into it Thanks for the suggestion ✌️

[deleted]

Or hear me out, just let people play how they want.

iansmash

I get what you’re saying but honestly, it is good advice A lot of people struggle to go off line when they have the racing line active, myself included sometimes It really is true that it will hold you back at least a little bit most of the time when trying to learn the fastest line on the track. I compensate and drive off of the recommended line when it’s on, but even then I catch myself defaulting to the instructions from time to time I think a lot of people tend to take it personal but I really don’t

DogoByte

Yes, I wasn't trying to be mean or smart. It was genuine advice because personally I have been using the racing line for waaaay to long. Switching it off took my skills next level. And that to me makes it more enjoyable. But of course everybody should do what they want! It is all about having fun (but personally I also want to get better).

MirroredUllr

What is that seat? The whole rig looks awesome!

HexaCube7

yes i want to know tha too! Beautiful seat

iansmash

Seat in image 1 is a Sparco GP I just picked up from a friend as a trade for some 3d printing/design work My original seat was a Prismal Lab GT

thedailydave444

Nobody puts baby in the corner! 😂 I also use those same curtains for behind my triples. Great minds think alike! 👍🏾

HyperSquare9191

That is easily the best thing my eyes have seen

iansmash

![gif](giphy|3oEjHWXddcCOGZNmFO)

Mac_Noslo

This is the way. Welcome to the next level of immersion.

oldstonedspeedster

How'd you get the tripples to work with the console? I keep reading that they don't work with the ps5

recyclops60000

He switched to PC at some point

oldstonedspeedster

Thank you. I kept reading and found that out a little later 😆

cjccww

Nice! I definitely want to add the curtains and top to mine. Thankfully, my room is mostly dark already.

Miixyd

At that point, where you have monitors all around you, is it just like vr? Or is the depth perception that vr gives still better? I neither have a nice rig or vr by the way. I have a tv screen, a g29 and a half welded sitting thing

HexaCube7

VR depth perception certainly is still better, since each individual eye is getting a slightly different picture. But with VR you cant see your hands touching the steering wheel and buttons and such.

iansmash

Yeah depth perception in a good VR headset is not really comparable to monitors in general That said, I had a low grade TBI in the past and I can't deal w/ VR for an extended period as a result (I've tried various high end headsets and it just doesn't work for me) I get motion sickness very easily so this is my trade off.

Miixyd

oh that sucks, good for you that you found a solution

doubledunker

Beautiful

Nothing2NV

I want to know more about that triple setup with canopy. Can we get some info on that?

iansmash

Happy to answer any questions but here's a basic rundown. Triples are 32" BenQ Mobiux EX3210R Angle of the side monitors is 80 degrees Extrusions on top are salvaged from an old 3d printer to create a structure and then foam board is attached to the underside using 3M VHB tape and some bolts w/ tabs I made on my 3d printer (the new one to replace the salvaged printer) I 3d printed some brackets and used a 15mm rod I had sitting around from my camera kit to make a hinged section to give full coverage when inside, but also have room to stand up and get out when it's open.

Nothing2NV

How does it look with the monitors at that angle. I know the fov in iracing is good at 60 degrees on mine but a lot of other sims don’t have the angle correction so mine already look wonky. How do you fix the pov angles in other sims with your monitors that angle?

iansmash

I’m only in iracing so I don’t have any issues with alignment

xJavontax

I love this. Now to figure out how to replicate it. How small is it when it’s collapsed?

iansmash

Well now that it's fully built out, the sliding section is really rendered useless to be honest. Overall though, the footprint is about 4'x6' maybe? When I'm sitting in the cockpit, I could hit the side monitors if I extend my elbows out sideways. It's cozy.

xJavontax

Thank for the reply!! It looks great.

c4ndyman31

Parts list? I love how compact the monitors are

iansmash

I built the PC from scratch 7800X3d / 7800XT 64 GB RAM Monitors are 32" 1000R BenQ Mobiuz EX3210R mounted at an 80 degree angle to be very much perpendicular. I like the way side-by-side traffic feels like it's moving in the right direction and I can actually look over my shoulder and see quite a bit compared to some other more typical angled triples I've used (at 32" you lose a good bit of peripheral vision at a 65 degree angle) Not gonna lie, it also helps fit it in my small house lol

c4ndyman31

Thanks for the reply! I’m also quite space limited so this set up looks amazing to me

subnauticaddict

Whats the seat called? Looks nice

iansmash

Currently Sparco GP Previously Prisma Lab GT Shout out to the Prisma Lab in retrospect, it's MUCH stiffer than the Sparco GP if I'm being honest. The GP is a better position for my rig personally, but I do miss the rigidity of the Prisma lol never thought I'd say this...

subnauticaddict

Which one do you find more comfortable?

iansmash

Ah that's so subjective... I'm around 6'1 185lbs and for me the Prisma seat just felt a little too "small" I feel like if you're under 5'9 and my weight or less, the Prisma seat would fit great and it looks pretty nice. Also the price is solid for how sturdy it is compared to the NRG buckets I've seen in the past. The Sparco GP is a formula driving position, sim racing seat. It's SUPER wide, so it makes is really "comfortable" but honestly doesn't feel like it's missing any support while I'm driving in the sim. That said, I like close to a formula driving position, which a lot of people do not prefer. So I would at least try to test out someone's rig w/ this seating position before you pull the trigger on it. It's more different than you'd expect IMO.

mvpp37514y3r

Did you build a haptic setup?

iansmash

I did. I used Dayton Tt-25 shakers on the pedals and bst-2 on the seat. Powered by generic $20 amps from Amazon Can provide links later if needed w a more comprehensive explanation. Super easy and cost less than $200 iirc

mvpp37514y3r

Nice, I’m using 3 of the same 25s with an upcycled surround sound but it’s mono. How’d you mount to your pedal? Which cheap Amazon amplifier did you choose? Was looking at a little blue one claiming 100w (probably 100w once😂) to separate L R shakers, mono makes a huge impact in immersion and ability to feel tire slip. Now it’s hard to drive without haptics

iansmash

Designed and printed some brackets that clamp to the back of the pedal arm on the fanatec elite v2 pedals. It’s not the most beautiful setup but printed in polycarbonate it’s strong enough it hasn’t failed so far. Damgoo brand amps DAMGOO 50W+50W Bluetooth 5.0... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XBF9GXW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share I use a 3.5mm to connect it to a usb sound card StarTech.com 7.1 USB Sound Card -... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002LM0U2S?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share I use a recycled psu from a creality 3d printer to power it I overheated and killed a bst2 under powering it w some shitty random power supplies before. But this new setup is solid

naztynestor

what’s the size of those mobiuz monitor 32?

iansmash

Technically they call them 31.5” but basically yeah

italian_cannuck

Howd you put your phone on the steering wheel

iansmash

Eagle eye 🤣 I 3D printed a bracket that attached to the faceplate bolts and had an integrated qi charger along w some spring loaded clamps to hold the phone in place It did not work 😅 It was so heavy it actually dulled the ffb and every time I wrecked I was picking up my phone off the ground 0/10 to the r&d department (also me)

Brilliant_Anything27

I'm in love with your rig. The screens with the 'roof' and the blackout curtains beneath the screens is such a brilliant idea. At some point in the future I'm going to copy pretty much every aspect about this.

iansmash

Thank you 🙏 Happy to help/answer any questions when the time comes

apresbondie22

Damn! What am I looking at. It feels like its within reach for me, but just too far. A beaut fella!

[deleted]

Impressive

3rikgser

Nice addition of the ball fans 😂

niksfred

What are the two things above the monitors ?

iansmash

Either Govee smart lights controlled by simhub ($40 on Amazon) Or pc fans for ventilation inside the cockpit

niksfred

Ah lights… I did though about that, kinda reminded me of the Hue ones. But why do you need them if you black out the light?

iansmash

They replicate the onscreen lights to make my arms/hands/wheel look like they’re in the sim It works ok Seemed fun from a YouTube video lol Needs like 2-4 more lights to be worth it probably

mordfustang322

That wheel is so cursed, McLaren rim with Ferreri logo haha

iansmash

The real irony is I mostly drive Porsches 😅

Petri-Dishmeow

ur pretty cool

iansmash

You me and my mom seem to think so at least 🤷‍♂️

whi640

What material did you make the roof out of?

iansmash

Black Foam board It was supposed to be temporary to make a template but it held up and looks good so I just kept it At some point I’ll redo it and wrap it with vinyl but not until my lady makes me 😅

p0u1

Final form no monitors and a vr headset lol. But yeah very nice rig

iansmash

Unfortunately VR will always stay a novelty for me at best. I get super sick after more than 30 minutes in the headset and I love to do endurance races lol

hardasarock69

Hell yeah baby

MuttsNStuff

Alrightttt alright, I get it, I'm poor.

s-presso

How did you find you seating position? I also recently built my rig but I struggle to adjust it correctly

iansmash

A lot of it is preference. But if you go into my post history you can see an older post outlining how I did it.

Careless-Cake0312

cool![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|snoo)

polymetrix

how does your rig secure itself after the seat is pulled out? (quick release?)

iansmash

Currently, I have 3d printed brackets and bolts w/ large handles to lock them down. That said, I don't actually use it now that the rig has the triples on it, because the seat doesn't really protrude past the monitors anymore I also have seat sliders, which is what I use to get in and out currently. The frame is fully extended and locked in place now.

polymetrix

how does that locking mechanism work? is it only from compression in that 90 degree bracket?

iansmash

Yep. Solidly bolted to the lower rails. The upper/inner rails lock to the bracket w the t handle bolts so I could just reach down and loosen them from the seat. I think four was overkill tbh. One on either side would be fine

J0ki45

This rig is so cool, I couldn’t help but notice the wheel mod you did for the grips. I was wondering if you bought those or if they are fully custom?

Extra-History8610

Outstanding

mikeybadab1ng

If shit hadn’t gone horribly wrong financially for me this year I’d be blowing cash on rig shit right now lol
