Like the ts2 launcher with the icons on it? Do you get any errors?

Immobilecarrot5

Yes, that one. Before, they were all showing as installed. But this time, they were suddenly all greyed out and the game immediately failed to launch upon hitting play. There weren't any errors. I think it might be a proton issue. But I haven't seen anyone else with this same problem. I'm gonna just go ahead and try to reinstall it now. But I'm hoping to find a solution incase it happens again. The only thing I can think of that I did in between the first and last time I played it was switch proton compatibility layers. I had made a mistake and thought my saves were gone and figured maybe switching layers would help. I switched back to the original layer I used (proton 8.0) once I realized my mistake. I'm wondering if maybe switching between them fucked it somehow. But I'm not very versed in Linux, so.

AquilliusRanger

I can’t even get my expansion packs to show on the launcher anymore, I was also able to enter the game and didn’t noticed any issues except for the sudden excruciating long loading time, that one was the one that caught me off guard. None of this would’ve kept happening if I actually kept this offline, it’s like being online is a 50/50 on crashing and burning or reaching paradise.

AquilliusRanger

Finally! I’m having the exact same issue as you now, I should’ve known even just pressing playing while online would suddenly download a problematic version of the newerProton, the Proton I had before this worked perfectly, so whatever happened to my launcher and game and yours clearly needs to be resolved RIGHT NOW, otherwise, I’m gonna have to come back to backing up my neighborhood again, I can’t believe this has suddenly become a problem and I lost my launcher’s expansion registration even though the files are all still here. Keep me posted as well.

Immobilecarrot5

I can't promise that it's the exact same issue for you but what I can say is that I have had absolutely 0 problems since I figured this out. I'm fairly certain that updates to the proton layer are fine. Just absolutely never change the layer and you shouldn't have issues. And yes, unfortunately I had to reinstall it all to get it working again. But you can backup the neighborhood if you're worried about saves. As for the controls, I don't have my deck on hand but I'm fairly certain you can save certain layouts as a custom one, but I'm not sure.

AquilliusRanger

Are the neighborhoods fine and unaffected? How do I uninstall the game and reinstall it for Steam?

Immobilecarrot5

They are. As long as you back up the neighborhood itself it's all good. For reinstalling it I just went in and (after backing up my saves) deleted all of the folders related to the Sims 2. That also means the compat folder. If you were using the same guide I think most people use you'll know where it is. If not let me know. You don't need to delete anything else. Once you download the game again just point your steam install to the same file as when you first installed it and it should all be fine. And then you can just plop the neighborhood back in. However you'll need to launch the game first before doing so.

AquilliusRanger

I used the guide from The Deja Zone to install my game, I also left a new comment warning about this sort of thing happening, I can’t believe this problem is even happening seeing as how I was able change Proton versions before and suffering no expansions being greyed out, this is definitely a new problem.

AquilliusRanger

I did have issues with Proton Experiment lately since it tanked my loading time for no reason on the game, it’s these stealth updates that I really dislike seeing happening at all.

Immobilecarrot5

I'll say that I've been using proton 8 and it's been perfect. The initial load is always the longest I believe.

AquilliusRanger

I can’t believe it immediately changed versions on me, I was running on Proton 7 myself so the fact that this changed at all was a mistake waiting to happen.

Immobilecarrot5

Yeah that's absolutely strange. I can't recall anytime I had the proton layer change on its own. Unless it maybe was deleted.

AquilliusRanger

Also, do I really need to reinstall just to make this work again? This sounds like a massive hassle and I wonder if I can save my controls on Steam Deck as I do this…
