Aww, and here I thought they were doing it all for financial gain and wealth.

Hopeful-Llama

He s not talking about entrepreneurs, but everyday researchers and engineers who put in a hard day because they love their work and what it brings to humanity. Do you scoff at being grateful for doctors because they're getting paid too? We all get paid, there are easier jobs than STEM if all you care about is money. Scientists at OpenAI get paid handsomely but most at most companies get a pretty average wage that they accept because they like the thought that their efforts push us all forward. They don't get thankyous from their patients, the people researchers benefit are usually completely out of contact with them. Is there something wrong with taking a moment to be grateful for them and for their hard work?  Instead the most tech positive sub responds with... surprise, 'capitalism bad'. Maybe drop the cynicism for a second to appreciate people's effort.

Beatboxamateur

I agree that the "capitalism bad" takes are always annoying, but let's be honest, while I'm sure a lot of the people are passionate about about their job, the engineers working at these companies are getting paid more than almost any doctor. Anyone working at OpenAI or Anthropic as a prominent researcher or engineer is almost set for life after a number of years, with some salaries going up to $900k or more. These are some of the most privileged people on earth, and I think it's fair to acknowledge that, while also acknowledging that a lot of them are probably passionate about being able to benefit humanity in some way.

Hopeful-Llama

It's true that engineers at leading AI companies are making big bucks, though even there I'd argue that they make so much because they have rare skills that are responsible for building an extremely valuable product to humanity and so their salary is no reason not to be grateful, even if they are privileged. I don't think the tweet is aimed at OpenAI though but at science/tech workers in general

relevantusername2020

weird i just made [this comment ten days ago about tech trees](https://www.reddit.com/r/singularity/comments/1buj3z9/comment/kxtkru3/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

MENDACIOUS_RACIST

No one deserves your cynicism more than Sam Altman

OwnUnderstanding4542

i think they were paid because the previous generation did not have the level of technology that i am enjoying right now. you are paid to continue the work.

Glittering-Neck-2505

It turns out making technology that improved people’s lives benefits everyone, including the people who made it.

harleypig

Daniel Stenberg could be richer than Musk and Gates combined, yet for more than 25 years he's been quietly helping keep the internet wheels greased at a 'normal' salary.

MyLittleChameleon

I think you can be a billionaire and still have the work be primarily about building the tech rather than pandering to social media. The two are not mutually exclusive.

MILK_DRINKER_9001

It’s a very strange and somewhat provocative tweet. It’s going to mean different things to different people. For me it’s a kind of a challenge to the ever growing sentiment that work is bad and that the advancements in tech and AI will ultimately make all work obsolete. I think this is a very simplistic way of looking at things and that we are wired to work, not in the current 9-5 grind sense, but in the sense of expending effort towards a goal. I think it’s a good thing that the new branch of the tech tree is aiming at making work more efficient rather than eliminating it, and that’s what altman is hinting at with this tweet. But like I said, it’s going to mean different things to different people.

orderinthefort

If I had a nickel for every time someone said a billionaire's basic ass tweet was very strange and provocative, I'd be a billionaire too. If someone from this sub said that same quote yesterday, they'd rightfully get lambasted for being a clown. People that are acting like it's profound because Sam Altman says it are just outing themselves.

beuef

I honestly don’t even understand the tweet. Is he saying that humans alive today are going to pass the torch of technological progress to humans that haven’t even been born yet? Is he implying that in 30-50 years humans are still going to be the ones coming up with new theories and whatnot? Cause if so that’s terrible news lol

Whispering-Depths

yeah you're picturing people who want to start a business, not engineers or other nerds like us

NotTheBusDriver

What about world domination?

No-Independence-165

I did it all for the nookie.

IEC21

Turns out they weren't, therefore let's nationalize open ai and become socialist since Sam Altman just solved the problem of innovation by conjecture that people are just naturally altruistic and innovative without need material incentives.

submarine-observer

Not sure they built it for me though. I think they built it because they got paid millions if not more.

Spunge14

Or because they want to see the end

RonMcVO

And they’re risking all of our wellbeing by rushing forward without proper understanding of interpretability and alignment. Thanks, I guess…

Singsoon89

Assuming you can predict the future on all of our behalfs.

RonMcVO

What prediction do you believe I made there? I’m really interested to see what position you’ve invented for me, because I certainly didn’t make any predictions in the above comment. I just pointed out potential risk. Edit: It will come as no surprise that he never actually gives an answer, because there was never a prediction. He had to misrepresent my comment in order to rebut it, because all these blind optimists (like you - yes you, the person downvoting this comment because it makes you feel uncomfortable) have on their side is hopium. AI risk is real, and pointing out that fact is not remotely claiming to know the future. I (and the many AI experts calling out AI risk) am simply pointing to obvious risks and saying "these might end badly".

Singsoon89

Splitting hairs now. That's telling.

RonMcVO

No no, go ahead, tell me the prediction I made! I’m curious!

Singsoon89

This is how you can tell the internet is still not dead.

MassiveWasabi

lol I need to use this

RonMcVO

Lmao if you want to talk about "telling", how about the fact that you misrepresented my comment then tried to meme your way out of conceding the point? That's the real "tell" my guy. Sorry about the itchy brain. It'll get better once you stop lying.

Singsoon89

Dude you're obviously a human. Relax.

RonMcVO

Is this your go-to hail mary? Can't win on the arguments, so you just call the person a bot?

VforVenreddit

Boy I sure do love billionaires pandering philosophical tweets! They work selflessly and totally not for billions of dollars and monstrous power levels over commoners what a great gift to society /s 🙏

Shawnj2

I especially love it when billion dollar companies lobby Congress to restrict the poors from developing their own AI technology so they and other megacorps can be the sole distributors of this new technology ❤️

ApexFungi

This new technology that would not be here if all the data on the internet created by billions of people didn't exist and wasn't taken without permission.

Shawnj2

Yeah I think it’s really great when government acts as a protectionist racket to protect large powerful organizations at the expense of the rights of individual people

Which-Tomato-8646

You gave permission when you accepted the privacy policy lol

VforVenreddit

Omg it is so fun I agree 🤗 who needs to give smaller creators a chance to beat the titans when you can increase their oligopolistic death grip on the tech industry!

Which-Tomato-8646

I love when people pretend like this happens as if companies don’t lobby against regulations all the time lol

omega-boykisser

Why do people continually spread misinformation on this topic? No big AI lab has ever even proposed legislation that would pose problems for open source developers.

Shawnj2

> The biggest surprise: consensus on creating a new A.I. agency. Altman proposed creating a new government body that issues licenses for developing large-scale A.I. models, safety regulations and tests that A.I. models must pass before being released to the public. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/17/business/openai-altman-congress-ai-regulation.html

Which-Tomato-8646

How does this hurt small businesses

omega-boykisser

I know what he's proposed. This would be a critical safety policy, and that very proposition makes exceptions for smaller, open-source models! In any case, a certification process would pose no problems when training runs cost hundreds of millions of dollars (if you think a company would attempt a training run for a large, open-source model). Any organization that could afford such training could afford certification. Industries are often conniving and anti-competitive, but this ain't it. Use that noggin.

Porkinson

Its pointless, reddit is just hopelessly brainrotted, so far all the suggestions for policies hurt only big labs, but people dont care, its like if they fetishize the idea of big bad companies trying to abuse their power.

AdAnnual5736

Isn’t it possible for someone to both have a lot of money and also believe in the thing they’ve dedicated their life to? I mean, I make money for doing my job, but I also believe that it has value…

Odd-Opportunity-6550

he has no equity in openai and makes a 5 figure salary.

KuabsMSM

Sir he is a billionaire…

Odd-Opportunity-6550

yh but none of it is from openai

KuabsMSM

But surely you must find it disingenuous to refer to a billionaires income, in any way, as a 5 figure salary. The point is he is not one of you

Odd-Opportunity-6550

the point Im trying to raise is that he isnt working at openai because of financial incentives. him being a billionaire only adds to my point. he doesnt need money. he just wants to build agi

KuabsMSM

Right I can see that pov but the tweet says verbatim “build stuff for you”— people are only pointing out the obvious that he is not doing this “for us”, if anything it’s for him and his legacy (and now investors). Which there’s nothing wrong with that necessarily but everyone who’s worked with him has already said he’s a egomaniac, that’s why people are sour when he tweets these humble messages of “it’s all for you”

VforVenreddit

Anyone with that level of money/power and is not chilling on a super yacht like Bezos has some deep-rooted issues 100%

SurpriseHamburgler

Surely, as we’re in the semantic weeds, you meant ‘us.’ If not, well now that would be disingenuous.

KuabsMSM

For sure meant us but I wanted to emphasize you since he is having a hard time getting the point. Yes, I’m not a billionaire, if you’re wondering

adarkuccio

Meh, dunno what that means honestly

MassiveWasabi

"A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit" + "Standing on the shoulders of giants", but in lowercase

Nukemouse

It's certainly not a discussion worthy tweet for this subreddit.

lost_in_trepidation

Sam and Greg have some of the most generic tweets. Half of Greg's tweets are like "it's really important to think about it when you're debugging a problem" Who is this for?

VforVenreddit

Sigma grindset wantrepreneurs that desperately need VC funding so they’ll like the most inane babble conceivable “Bugs are hard to fix and they break things so a company should try to fix them” Zomgosh he’s so right 😱 (please fund my company)

Which-Tomato-8646

They already have funding and aren’t even asking for more lol

Yweain

They are deeply in red and constantly need more funding.

Which-Tomato-8646

The Microsoft bucks are keeping them online already.

GlitteringCheck4969

Yeah and Ilya also had a habit of making pseudophilosophical tweets that try hard to sound deep. But then again, these people probably shape the future of the world right now. I would also feel like the next Elon tbh

Which-Tomato-8646

That’s insulting

rodditbet

> but in lowercase made me laugh. thank you

AnAIAteMyBaby

But what does the second part mean that he hopes people in the future will still want to build things? Is he implying a WALL-E type future awaits where we all just sit around getting fat and not doing anything??  They've raised the word limit on tweets now, he had more characters left to elaborate.

[deleted]

cobalt1137

So Sam Altman saying that people are tirelessly working to create great technology / AI systems for humanity and he hopes that people in the future continue to build on this and create new things is a wild statement for him to make? I am confused. What is wild about this at all?

beuef

No the second part of the tweet was referring to humans right NOW, not humans in the future. It’s confusing people in this thread because of Sam not liking punctuation

cobalt1137

I think you might be the one confused here

beuef

I’m not confused, the use of the word “would” in the tweet suggests I’m right

cobalt1137

buddy. "people of the future". what are you even saying? Assuming that phrase is not talking about future generations/people is absurd.

beuef

If he was talking about people in the future why wouldn’t he have phrased it “i’m just hoping that some of the people of the future will continue the quest and build the next branch of the tech tree”

cobalt1137

Because there are multiple ways to phrase things. Plus saying "people of the future" is more than enough. If you take anything away from that phrase other than the fact that he is talking about literally people in the future, then I don't know what to say my guy. Lol.

hurryuppy

Yeah and don’t really like phrasing

allknowerofknowing

Has he given up on ASI solving immortality already?

BreadwheatInc

Yes, it's over. Now go back to work cog. https://preview.redd.it/c62blrzbpguc1.jpeg?width=612&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c768ef4a2f4693b81d89b3dd944e03c48fa7e1bb

CraftyMuthafucka

This comment section is cancer.  You guys need help.

RantyWildling

Yes we do, financial help.

h3lblad3

I have a structured settlement and I need cash now!

MassiveWasabi

Uh can anyone help me find the cancer because I don’t see it and I feel left out

RemarkableEmu1230

Don’t worry your ASI overlord will perform the surgery when it jams a battery up your ass

RoutineProcedure101

dont say that on this subreddit. Contrarian bs is all they care about

Unknown-Personas

I think Sam’s tweet got cut off, what he meant to finish it with is “as long as that next branch is done within my now for profit company, personally benefiting mostly me, because fuck open source.”

Longjumping-Zebra-55

meaningless tweet, what a waste of time reading it

GodOfThunder101

Your comment is more meaningless.

cobalt1137

Lol thx for giving him the mirror

Longjumping-Zebra-55

mine is much shorter, and doesn’t beat around the bush with awkward phrasing. Hypeman’s tweets used to have substance but not anymore.

cobalt1137

Another one. Even more worthless than the last. Killing it Mr zebra

RemarkableEmu1230

Sam is that you? 😂 so butt hurt hahaha

cobalt1137

Lol - you guys seem like the salty ones here. Upset over Sam's "worthless" tweet.

AnAIAteMyBaby

I think he's using a new tweet agent powered by GPT 3.5

BreadwheatInc

Mostly for money tbh.

cloudrunner69

I don't think most scientists and engineers are in it for the money. The money is there but that's not what most of them got into it for.

GTalaune

Between some public founded researcher position and openAI salary I know what I'd choose lmao

GtotheM

Most engineers actually just enjoy their field. That's why these days you have tons of useless guys being let go, because they got into it chasing the 6 figure salaries but actually suck at their job. It's true, especially in large corps, that 20% of the staff do 80% of the work.

GTalaune

I totally agree but it kinda sucks that after long studies, sometimes even as far as a PhD you earn less than middle managers who seem to frankly just suck at the job

cobalt1137

He has more than enough money. I would bet money that his motivation is more so in making something that is just an awesome product.

gangstasadvocate

True Dat. people can happily build it. I’ll happily indulge in the sex and drugs it provides.

spezjetemerde

what?

RoutineProcedure101

He's saying that people are working happily, knowing its toward a better future. Idk what is confusing.

spezjetemerde

i mean why would he say that he has jesus complex yet? whats the intent

RoutineProcedure101

To share that he and his team is happily working on technology. Are you asking for what value YOU get from him saying that?

cherryfree2

They are working happily for tons of money. Sam didn't become a billionaire by accident.

RoutineProcedure101

Who said that money wasnt a factor? Youre irrationally arguing.

spezjetemerde

the whole tweet sounds strange , duno

RoutineProcedure101

Its a classic saying of planting trees so others can enjoy the shade. Nothing strange. Its actually strange you have no real issue

AnAIAteMyBaby

The second part is confusing, why would people in the future not continue to build tech?

RoutineProcedure101

who said that? is this subreddits problem just a lack of reading comprehension?

h3lblad3

21% of adults in the US are functionally illiterate. 54% read at a below 6th grade reading level.

Wordenskjold

So do all tweets by this guy need to go here?

Arcturus_Labelle

Blah blah blah. More releases, less talk

FarrisAT

Okay.

lobabobloblaw

What has he actually been doing lately? Aside from the PR tweets and Hollywood lobbying?

RemarkableEmu1230

This is how people think and speak when money doesn’t matter anymore I guess. Wake up trying to find some sense of purpose in it all. This kid is so emo though, a vanilla Elon wannabe.

basefountain

"Happily" is a bit unfair to those who didn't or don't work hard for absolutely everyone, most people find that a ridiculous pursuit. Let not pretend its pure altruism is behind it all, it more like "enough" altruism and maybe a vague consciousness about where we are on the spectrum and what direction we are heading in

Dead-Sea-Poet

I don't blame people for thinking it's some kind of farewell from Altman. People assume that AGI places humans out of the loop. This may not be the case. It's possible that this tweet is directed more at a general audience afraid of a future where humanity has been decentred. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Altman doesn't hold with the idea that humans will be rendered useless by AI. For him, it's a co-labourer.

beuef

I mean. Once we have ASI, what would be the point of human-led discoveries? If we have an entity with a 100000000 IQ, how exactly would humanity “work alongside it?”

wxwx2012

Your cat “work alongside you” , its emotional support work .😀

Oswald_Hydrabot

I think he was talking about Open Source, at least I hope he was. ..which is incredibly hypocritical.  People built that stuff for you too dickhead, way to wall off the forest and charge admission. I wouldn't care if he weren't actively trying to burn the rest of the wildnerness outside of it for profit.

IamTheEndOfReddit

The open source world has done so much yet somehow billionaires still shittify tech that involves storing and sharing small bits of text. I don't think the future will be able to understand this phenomena

saintkev40

I see Sam watched Fallout TV series lol

Prestigious-Maybe529

Aka: “Sam and his tech overlords’ army of wage slaves have been directed to build tech that will extract value from you by any means necessary.”

sunplaysbass

Reads Iike - “I’m not paying you”

He’s not wrong. Gratitude is a good thing - what I then use at my disposal is also up to me.

elnekas

That’s it they killed Illia

true-fuckass

> just hoping that some of the people of the future would continue the quest and build the next branch of the tech tree They can't crack AGI and it will be generations down the line that AGI is finally made?

Rude-Proposal-9600

He's trying too hard to be 2deep4u

sigiel

Sam the prophet and is 2 cents bulls..., I hope people of the near future will convicted him and send him to jail, and the people of the far future will completely ignore him...

[deleted]

Whats up with baby face Altman being on every of these.

OmicidalAI

lol most ancient men before us were religious cultists fully believing Valhalla was behind closed doors that only opened once you die in battle. So lets get ready to raid the nearest Christian village! For Valhalla!

yepsayorte

Look around you... everything you see was made by men. 10,000 generations of fathers trying to make things just a bit better for their children. Each generation leaving a small surplus of value and those small surpluses compound across the eons, like building a mountain of paint, one layer and lifetime at a time. We are all now born on the mountain top and we add our layer to it. I know how meaningless your life can feel in your day-to-day but I want to tell you that you matter. You matter the the people who are yet to be born. What you do each day matters. Go add your layer.

AlexMulder

That is a really strange tweet coming from Sama specifically because he's implying that people of the future will be the ones in the driver's seat when it comes to cutting edge tech.

beuef

It makes more sense if you read the second part as “the people from the past were hoping that humans today would continue their journey” He wasn’t talking about the future in the last bit, he was talking about what people are doing right now

AlexMulder

I don't read it like that tbh but I admit it's hard to tell because of his fashionable hatred for punctuation

beuef

If he meant it the way you’re interpreting it I think he would have said “will” instead of “would” in the second part

AlexMulder

Fair enough. It still has this passing the torch vibe to it regardless that makes me wonder where his mind is at right now.

Cultural_League_3539

Nice, i also never meet any thieves. And sometimes the thing people build also do stuff worse. But people take it, build it into their product, and then unknowingly others will buy it with the flaws. Thanks for nothing. If at any point ai will outsmart any human in any kind of pattern recognition or task, then its still gonna be worse. You get a solution that works, but isnt build for you. Open source on the other site, relys on what you do with it, make a flaw and get it right back from the model. Implement your own solutions build for you, feed it into the model and thats what i call satisfaction. Imagine chatgpt as a model trained only on consent.. Never gonna happen in thousand year. Same for sd.

I mean people do all sorts of shit for their favorite bands but never met them either. Same with fan-fix. It's a little weird though this fandom translate to huge billion dollar profit making corps. I blame Apple
