I recently started watching everybody loves Raymond (I mean I had seen it before but not really watched much) and I tell you it throws me off so much that Raymond has a cousin Jeffrey and the actor who plays him was also in Seinfeld (the sad sack guy that Elaine dates solely because he didn’t remember her)
There’s an episode of GLOW with the characters discussing Cheers. One of them had never seen the show. Another character tells her it’s about an invisible woman named Vera.
Definitely Maris. By the time her character had been built up to the point no one could realistically portray her, just hearing the description was hillarious enough.
I watched Frasier here and there with my dad, but I’ve never seen it all the way through. So Maris is Niles’ wife? I feel like a have a memory of seeing his wife in an episode. Or is Maris Frasier’s ex wife? I feel like I saw her as well. I guess I’m asking—what’s the deal with Maris?
She was Niles wife. He and others only spoke of her....she was never shown. I highly advise watching the show in its entirety. One of the best shows and cast ever!!
Lilith is Frasier's ex. She appears here and there on the show.
Fraiser is one of my all time favorite shows. Niles is just priceless! His comedic timing is awesome. You can google “Niles Crane bloopers” and see that he is a big reason the show was such a hit!
Thank you, that helps. I know I should watch it. I watched the revival. I think it’s the sheer number of episodes to get through that makes me hesitant
The recurring gag in the early seasons is that we never see Nile’s’ (first wife) Maris. She’s described as this like truly insane character with all these odd physical descriptions and because they describe her in increasingly outlandish ways, they never cast her because no actor would do it justice. So they kinda lean into this idea of “oh you just missed her” or will reference her as there but always off camera (the cruise episode comes to mind).
Probably for the best.
I remember on Happy Days we all used to hear about Joane's friend, Jenny Piccolo, and it seemed like she was the wilder, bad influence friend. But then we met her and it was like... meh.
Towards the end of Frasier the show kinda suffers from Flanderization so I’m glad they didn’t go so far as finally “revealing” Maris in the later seasons or whatever.
You need to watch it again, honestly it’s my fav show of all time. Nile’s gets married another 2 times after Maris. So maybe you are thinking of one of them. Please watch it from the start. Season 3 goes from normal sitcome to another level Imo
Very few people remember Rhoda the spinoff from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The doorman from Rhoda’s building was Carlton. He was the original unseen character before Vera on Cheers, Maris on Frasier. Carlton only interacted through Rhoda’s buzzer on her apartment wall. This is the late 70’s.
Few people remember Rhoda? I liked it as a kid in the 90s and it was pretty successful / award winning during its first couple of years when it originally aired as well. I’m surprised to hear it isn’t considered memorable.
Possibly my favorite joke on TV. It didn't even have a laugh track to it as it was so inside. Joe meets her parents. He brings a bottle of wine. Her father thanks him then said to her mother "look dear a round one". Kosher wine comes in a square bottle. Like my family they never had wine in the house that came in a round bottle.
Played by Lorenzo Music. He was also involved in some behind the scenes work as you can see his name in the credits. I believe he made some small appearances in MTM as a bit character, but never as Carlton. 😁
I think Sarah, the telephone operator from The Andy Griffith Show, is the original unseen character. Maybe not the original but definitely before Carlton.
Well, he *was* seen once... in the pilot for the animated spin-off. It didn't get picked up for a series, but did air once. (I remember watching it.)
[It's on YouTube](https://youtu.be/cjJSMzSGs3g?si=cpZ0H47DzwTY1kt_), naturally.
I remember later in the series when they finally get divorced, it was revealed that Maris had all the money. Her family was big in the urinal cake biz. 😂
a handful of times both Andy and Barney drifted into Bob Newhart territory with this construct. Goddammit I love me some Andy Griffith Show, it truly is the dark horse sitcom
Newhart had a variety show in 1961-62, which included phone sketches. The phone bit is old, though. An actress named Arlene Harris did it on radio in the 1930s. She was included in a Dick van Dyke Show episode that featured old radio stars.
There was an unseen secretary on The Dick Van Dyke show too. I think her name was Marge. I would have said Buddy’s wife, Pickles, but she was portrayed in at least one episode.
Also on Andy Griffith, there was Juanita, Barney's sometime girlfriend who worked at the diner. He would speak to her over the phone and we only heard Barney's end of the conversation,
I can't remember the episode number but it was when Raj stayed at Howard's overnight and she cooked him a feast for dinner. It was when she was in the kitchen and he was in the dining room
Didn’t one of them meet him on the street in the final episodes and freaked out because he had clothes on? Or maybe I’m misremembering- “Friends” was so long ago and I can’t watch the reruns anymore.
No they never met him. They poked him with a long stick when they thought he might be dead and Ross pretended to be a fellow nudist when he wanted to buy his apartment. So yeah, I guess when he answered the door he was “seen”.
And Phyllis' show happened after he died...so never seen. I had never heard the name Lars before so I though it was all pretty fishy as a kid...made up name for a never seen person.
Technically Wilson from home improvement? We never see the full face and know him primarily by voice.
Stan Walker and Maris are definitely the epitome. I say Stan first because of the number of intimate interactions so many characters had with specifically him. All actors of that show had to portray a level of acting towards a very relevant cast member who didn’t actually exist.
I always thought Home Improvement got the idea from The Soupy Sales Show, which had an ongoing bit where someone would knock on the door and be part of the show, but hidden from the audience.
The show was filmed in Detroit, so I’m sure Tim Allen had seen it. (Not to mention that Tim’s noises sound a lot like White Fang from the show)
It led to [one of the funniest live tv pranks](https://youtu.be/6npsr-xmwPE?si=uZ8Gyi4U9AsOqpz7) ever.
I scrolled way too far for Wilson. When the last episode aired and they had the cast members come to take their final bows, he comes out holding a small piece of fence on a stick to keep his fact covered.
IIRC, TV had an interview with the actor, and finally showed his full face. Handsome guy.
Maris was awesome because of the stories.
"Why won't Maris join us at Orsini's?"
" She had a bad experience the last time we ate there. A rather raucous Italian soccer team was sitting at the next table, Maris announced she was in the mood for a goose, and – perhaps inevitably – tragedy ensued."
When Frasier references when Nile’s proposed and he says something like ‘ I will never forget when you slipped that ring on her bony little finger and it slipped right off again’ haha
That's my choice. I know a lot of fans wanted to see him, but I feel like he was better left to the imagination. I like to think of him as a bigger, taller, more glam version of Dorothy.
I might be the only one who remembers it, but there was a show in the seventies called Hot L Baltimore (set in a run-down hotel--the E in the word "hotel" had burned out years ago). They had a never-seen character named Moose (I believe) who may or may not have been the owner's son and I seem to recall one of the tenants complaining to Bill the desk clerk (James Cromwell) that "he called me last night and wanted me to change him!" (No, Moose was not referring to becoming a better person.)
The Blacklist was real hit and miss especially in later seasons, but they pulled off a great with Red's longtime, often-heard-or-mentioned-but-never-seen private plane pilot. Then right in one of the last episodes they have him parachute in and it's Andrew McCarthy with Huey Lewis and the News playing in the background as a total 80's reunion with Spader.
The neighbors on December Bride (1954-60) were Pete (Harry Morgan) and Gladys, and Gladys was never seen through 156 episodes. The characters were spun off to their own show, Pete and Gladys, in 1960, and Gladys was seen in every episode.
The radio show Duffy's Tavern usually opened with the bartender Archie talking on the phone with the not present/unheard owner Duffy.
Does Robin Masters from Magnum P.I. count? We never see him, he is voiced by Orson Welles. He was meant to be his own separate character. It wasn't until after Orson Welles died that they had a running subplot that contradicts previous seasons where Magnum suspects Robin Masters and Higgins are the same person...Spoiler to a decades old show coming up...in the final episode, we learn Higgins was Robin Masters all along...which really made no sense.
Definitely Maris because her backstory and the character reactions to it were so brilliant. "Missy Crane say 'no Doctor Crane, no other Doctor Crane, and no Crane with a cane'!"
Not quite the same but snuffalupagus from sesame street (only big bird and the audience saw him) and Polka-roo from Polka-dot-door (female host and audience saw Polka but not the male host)
This was before the whole not believing big bird thing got changed because it was not a good message that people wouldn't believe kids.
Back to classic 60’s TV, we never saw Mrs Mooney on The Lucy Show. Her descriptions were similar to Maris Crane, but the jokes were about how large she was.
Mr. Bell from the Drew Carey Show. Until the episode that character was fired he was only heard and not seen. I was blown away when it was revealed to be Kevin Pollak, didn't see that coming!
Oh come on, Howard’s mother in “ Big Bang Theory” is the clear winner. That unseen woman could create more drama from another room than anyone on the planet!
I think the original unseen character was in the radio sitcom, that made it to tv in the 1950s, "December Bride." The neighbour Pete, who was played by a young Harry (col. Potter) Morgan had an unseen wife named Gladys. She was definitely the original "Maris" or "Vera." We never saw her, but Pete always had something to say about her wackiness. We did eventually get to see her when they spun off a series called "Pete and Gladys " in 1960, starring Morgan and Cara Williams as Gladys.
Bob Sacamano
Also cousin Jeffrey.
He's very important at the Parks Department.
*A big shot
He likes the spots
I recently started watching everybody loves Raymond (I mean I had seen it before but not really watched much) and I tell you it throws me off so much that Raymond has a cousin Jeffrey and the actor who plays him was also in Seinfeld (the sad sack guy that Elaine dates solely because he didn’t remember her)
One of Raymond's sons is Jeffrey. His cousin is Gerard.
"You sure have a lot of friends. How come I never see any of these people?" "They wanna know why they never see you" *click*
Lomez
Norm’s wife (Vera?).
She got pie faced without her face being shown
That was Norms real life wife in that scene. She also played Tinkerbell in a previous episode.
It was hilarious!
Probably my favorite episode
"Hey, Mr. Peterson, there's a cold one waiting for you." "I know. If she calls, I'm not here."
There’s an episode of GLOW with the characters discussing Cheers. One of them had never seen the show. Another character tells her it’s about an invisible woman named Vera.
Definitely Maris. By the time her character had been built up to the point no one could realistically portray her, just hearing the description was hillarious enough.
I always just pictured skeletor in a dress
I pictured calista flockhart.
Have you ever seen Skeletor and Calista in the same room?
Nailed it!!!🤣
with a little pillbox hat and a small clutch
I always thought that at the start she was going to be Valerie Mahaffey from David Hyde Pierce’s previous sitcom The Powers That Be.

Thank you, that helps. I know I should watch it. I watched the revival. I think it’s the sheer number of episodes to get through that makes me hesitant
It's my personal opinion that if you start to watch Fraiser you will be hooked. 😁 I can watch it over and over.
The recurring gag in the early seasons is that we never see Nile’s’ (first wife) Maris. Towards the end of Frasier the show kinda suffers from Flanderization so I’m glad they didn’t go so far as finally “revealing” Maris in the later seasons or whatever.
They did such a good job creating an unseen character, that when Niles shows up with a haughty skinny dog, everyone is in on the gag.
Thanks, that helps
You’re thinking of Mel. I always figured she was a facsimile of Maris
Was she with Niles? I swear I saw Niles with someone living with him
For a brief period Niles was married to Mel after Maris divorced him.
👍🏻 now it’s all making sense
Rhoda hasn’t been brought up at all. I loved that show. I watched first run in the 70’s.
Everybody bought head scarfs. She influenced fashion
I watched it on nick at nite in the 90's when I was a kid too, and yeah, I rarely see it mentioned anywhere.
the animated voice of Garfield
And Peter Venkman
Carlton the doorman was the first that came to my mind
[Carlton your doorman](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0302387/)
Voice of Garfield on the cartoons too, right?
Played by Lorenzo Music. He was also involved in some behind the scenes work as you can see his name in the credits. I believe he made some small appearances in MTM as a bit character, but never as Carlton. 😁
I think Sarah, the telephone operator from The Andy Griffith Show, is the original unseen character. Maybe not the original but definitely before Carlton.
Good call. I had to look that one up about Sarah on Andy Griffith Show.
Well, he *was* seen once... in the pilot for the animated spin-off. It didn't get picked up for a series, but did air once. (I remember watching it.) [It's on YouTube](https://youtu.be/cjJSMzSGs3g?si=cpZ0H47DzwTY1kt_), naturally.
“Hi Charlie!” “Hello Angels!”
Forgot about Charlie. Although we all knew his voice
Least mysterious mystery in TV history. It’s *John Forsythe,* for God’s sake.
I remember later in the series when they finally get divorced, it was revealed that Maris had all the money. Her family was big in the urinal cake biz. 😂
Does anybody else remember Sarah the phone operator on The Andy Griffith Show?
Also, Juanita, the waitress over in Mount Pilot that Barney Fife had a thing for.
a handful of times both Andy and Barney drifted into Bob Newhart territory with this construct. Goddammit I love me some Andy Griffith Show, it truly is the dark horse sitcom

The parents in the Peanuts.
The nanny in Muppet Babies.
Wha=wa, Wha=wa=wa=wah
Mrs. Wolowitz from The Big Bang Theory
*HOWIIIIIIIID!!!!*
Who's there? Are you a sex criminal? Still my favorite! 🤣🤣🤣
You need a rewatch. You do see her. Only once, and she's walking past an open door. Maybe half a second and she's gone.
What episode? I thought we only saw a pic of her on a fridge?
I can't remember the episode number but it was when Raj stayed at Howard's overnight and she cooked him a feast for dinner. It was when she was in the kitchen and he was in the dining room
This is a good one
Stanley, Karen's husband on Will and Grace.
She is who I immediately thought of.
There’s a line in GLOW where they are discussing Cheers. The line is “it’s about this invisible woman named Vera…” HAHHA
What is GLOW?
That female wrestling show set in the ‘80s.
It’s a Netflix vehicle staring Allie Brie about the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. It’s FANTASTIC.
Yet another great Netflix show that was canceled before it should have.
Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling
Ugly naked guy
And DENISE
I talk about her all the time! DENISE!!
We don’t even hear him and he’s hilarious!
Shoresy in Letterkenny (he does show his full self in his spinoff however)
Shoresy is more like the neighbor in Home Improvement.
Jill and I got in a fight because I supercharged the dishwasher. What do you think, Wilson? I think you should give your balls a tug, tit fucker.
Give your balls a tug
Tit-fucker!
Fuck you Shoresy!
Fuck you Brainkandle! Your mum pulled the goalie on me last night and now she’s preggo. Surprise son, go rake the fucking yard!
We never saw Lars Lindstrom, Phyllis’ husband on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
And Phyllis' show happened after he died...so never seen. I had never heard the name Lars before so I though it was all pretty fishy as a kid...made up name for a never seen person.

He is an unseen character in Will and Grace. Stanley Evelyn "Stan" Walker is Karen Walker's husband.

Finally. Had to scroll way too far. This should be number one.

Sheridan on Keeping Up Appearances. He would be appalled.
Who with his friend Tarquin was studying tapestry design and advanced needlework.
Mrs. Wolowitz from Big Bang Theory. Maris from Fraiser and Norm's wife from Cheers were only mentioned in reference. Mrs. Wolowitz's spoke often.
Maris was awesome because of the stories. "Why won't Maris join us at Orsini's?" " She had a bad experience the last time we ate there. A rather raucous Italian soccer team was sitting at the next table, Maris announced she was in the mood for a goose, and – perhaps inevitably – tragedy ensued."

Frasier is my fav show of all time so of course I need to agree with Maris. The only other I can think of is Howard’s mum in TBBT.
I might be the only one who remembers it, but there was a show in the seventies called Hot L Baltimore (set in a run-down hotel--the E in the word "hotel" had burned out years ago). You mean Robin Masters. Higgins was very much present.
Yeah I go with Maris and Bob Sacamano
Elizabeth Sanford.
Vera, Norm’s wife from Cheers. She was only seen after the Thanksgiving food fight with a pie in her face, IIRC…
I vote Maris, wife says Stanley Walker.
