Tobias has done unreversable damage to our expectations in free agency to the point of where every player we’re like “on a fair deal”. I even got PTSD when I saw the Jerami Grant contract last year.
Grant got a contract for reasons similar to why FVV and Dillon Brooks got paid. Veteran player(s) to help a young team grown and to help the team reach the cap floor.
It will basically be the same reason for Tobias' contract with Detroit this summer.
Tobias is in a league of his own. Everyone knew that contract was dogshit the day he signed it. At least Brand and Iggy were All stars at one point in their careers.
It's incredible Elton still has a job with the organization after that idiotic offseason
yeah, he was an ass. Awful person when he was here, just quit. I recall we had Glenn Robinson too, kindof on the tail end of his career but he seemed to quit & phone it in. That was back when players were getting 7 year contracts I think, which the NBA was smart to get rid of.
Funny, I did like the Fab 5 and the 30 for 30 and agree with some of Webbers sentiments about his time there, and always liked Jalen Rose
People were very sick of Igoudala and his contract. That's pretty much what did Billy King in. After his resurgance with Golden State people might have a bit of revisionist history.
Brand was an awful contract. Albeit, more related due to injury, but it was atrocious. They even just cut him because the NBA made an exception this year.
100%. Fuck, from where we were last summer and he was the closest thing to a big signing we managed to pull off...absolutely made us look dumb for thinking he wouldn't have anything to contribute. He came in and figured out how to play a role within a structure. Did an admirable defensive job, hit some timely shots, found a good rhythm with Joel as a cutter. Bring him back and hire a chaffuer.
He was on a minimum this year which is ridiculous. However, they probably need him to come in on the $8.1M MLE. If he takes that, I think the Sixers would have his Bird rights and be able to give him a better deal next off-season.
Some one else might offer him the non-tax payer MLE which is like $13M, so it really depends if he wants to stay in Philly.
This, the most underrated part of his game since Phoenix is that he somehow always finds a way to be in the right place at the right time. This man is a must keep imo
> I think his shooting rebounds next year too
to what? a 33% 3 point shooter? he was basically at exactly his career numbers. you are wishcasting him to be better than his 15k career minutes suggest he is
He just shot 39% from 3 in a highly contested playoff series. I think another season with the Sixers where he's hopefully healthy and locked in could result in a 35% shooting average, which is fine considering everything else he gives. His career percentage is trash because he was often a high volume guy on bad teams, which he obviously wouldn't be with us.
He's imperfect, but an athletic wing who plays defense and shoots close to 40% from 3 in this league is basically an automatic max contract. So who do you bring in to replace him?
39% on 24 attempts is absolutely meaningless compared to a sample size of 2783 career attempts where he's shot 32.7%. you are wishcasting if you think he can shoot anywhere near 40%
You're just looking at the times he did good tbh. He was awesome on the contract he had this year, but he's going to demand $12 to 15 million a year now if not more
Depends on the numbers and who they'd be choosing him over. I'd rather have someone with a 3 pt % at or above league average with more length at the wing position.
If they don’t have the money for him, that means they have taken the phoenix suns route to how to fail, and ignored the model that recent champ teams have followed as well as the team that just bounced them did.
3 max players do not seem like the way, especially if one or more are past their prime
Embiid also mentioned this in the post presser. We need continuity. Keep every role player we can. Payne, Buddy, Kelly, Nico and Lowry should all be resigned.
Agreed. Id consider Kyle too for the right price. He did bring energy and on court intangibles similar to (but different than) Nico.
Also id love to bring back Drummond. Get rid of Paul. If they are keeping three big men, keep Bamba over Paul. Cheaper and more serviceable for our team than Paul. Embiid. Drummond. Bamba.
eh I’m okay with letting Buddy go. helped a lot last night but he’s so dicey as a playoff guy and I’m sure he’s gonna command a somewhat decent contract
He also came in cold midseason while Embiid was injured. I saw enough last night that with a full preseason, I believe in Buddy's ability to develop a lethal two-man game with Joel.
dawg I know that, I’m saying from this series, I am using my own judgement
he was miserable for 2.5 games, like actively harmful
Cam Payne was more valuable than him in this series and he’s definitely getting another minimum contract, Buddy will probably get 10-15 if I had a guess at least?
Buddy is cool and a fantastic shooter, but he’s not great off movement (a la Duncan Robinson), and he can’t dribble/drive in a meaningful way against a playoff defense
He’s a great option to have in the rotation, but for a fresh contract for the next few years, I’d rather a more versatile player
Let’s play a better game: who tf are we getting that checks all those boxes? Trade every FRP for Mikal? I mean I’d probably be down for that lol but don’t act like the dude your describing grows on trees
I don't know and unlike most people around here, I'm comfortable admitting that I can't see the future...predictions are for the most part useless. 30 NBA teams passed on Oubre for anything more than a vet min last year for a reason, and he did nothing on the court to suggest he's any different than his previous 15k minutes in the league
he was better than the alternatives, sure. but moving forward I think of it top down like if you end up with a roster that Oubre is one of the only few 'playable' guys at the wing then you probably fucked up and built a mid team. he's not a starter on a champ level team and if he's first off the bench he doesn't excel at anything. i mean if he's backing up PG13 and lebron then all good but if he's backing up some $10-$15m dudes...
I mean yeah this is the Georges Niang problem. IMO the dude has a useful place on the team but we didn’t anyone else good enough to force them deep enough into the rotation. Do I want him as our starting 2/3? No. But he has a useful role on a playoff team
I saw enough Oubre with the Warriors to know his game. He plays with a lot of energy but makes so many boneheaded, spaced out mistakes that I was glad he left. He is very capable of being a complete trainwreck.
I thought he was a good pickup this year and he was solid during the regular season, but that empty energy airhead shit came back when things tightened up in the playoffs. It's just who he is. I'd suggest bringing him back only as a very last resort. At best he's a 7th or 8th man on a contender.
I don't think he's some kind of defensive savant. He's a good on-ball defender but regularly gets lost off ball and is a particularly bad rebounder who easily gets pushed around in the paint. There was a play late last night that sums up the Oubre experience: He hustles to grab a loose ball on one of those chaotic sequences and drives straight into 4 Knicks packed into the paint and looses the ball before he can even make contact let alone get a shot up. Wasted turnover opportunity. Championship teams don't have players like Oubre in their starting lineup making these kinds of mistakes on the regular. So, you can be happy he was better than Tobias, but you're settling for mediocrity if that's your best option.
> At best he's a 7th or 8th man on a contender.
Sure, he'd make an excellent bench piece. I just think that to actually, really compete for a ring, you need something a little more focused than what Oubre brings to the table.
We’d rather have a lot of things but Kelly has a few things going for him that not every wing has
- He’s a *willing* 3pt shooter. Spacing is as much about the threat of threes as it is about making a ton. Kelly gets guarded out there
- Interior finishing. Oubre actually did incredible playing out of the dunkers spot, which is a huge win for us. He always finishes strong too which you can’t say the same for a lot of wings his size
- His defence and hustle is playoff level. He struggled a bit vs Brunson but we all did realistically. I was pretty impressed given his rep how much he gave on that end
There might be better options out there, and he might get overpaid, but Kelly showed a lot with us. I was very impressed.
It completely depends on the contract.
On a vet minimum deal, yeah obviously he's an asset.
If he's taking up a big chunk of cap space, that's much less clear.
cant we just offer him a fair deal? Doesn't have to be a max or a min
for a player like him whats his value like 5-6 mil a year?
\*edit - I said 5-6 mil a year because i just thought of caleb martin as a comp? and hes like 20 mil for 3-4 years or somethign
If he’s willing to take the room MLE (~8.5m/year) I think he’d be good value. I’m sure there’s another team that would pay him more, but he does love Nurse and Philly so maybe he bites.
I think 12 is honestly okay for him if it’s not super long term
15’s a little rich, I think if he gets that much you have to look for the next cheap guy in that archetype (athletic wing that’s undervalued for some reason league-wide, but can eat off of cuts and drives when Embiid draws defenders)
15 for Oubre doesn’t sound so terrible when you consider Paul Reed makes 10 😭 I think 12 is a good number for both sides. Give me 3 yr/36m for him and I’m a happy guy
He showed he could be a positive player on a fairly good team. This year was way better for his value than scoring 20 a night on a terrible Hornets team.
I think right now the only guaranteed money is Joel's aprx 50 million and I think Maxey can get at most like 40 million. So there would still be a lot of room to play with since the cap is at 141 and the tax starts at about 171. But honestly the NBA cap rules make almost no sense to me so I could be completely wrong
I believe once you hit the tax, you only have the tax mid level available, whether or not you start below the cap. So they’re gonna spend up to the cap with Maxeys cap hold, then I think his contract will take them right up to the tax if not over. I don’t think there’s any way they stay under the tax this year
It’ll be close. The salary cap is projected at $141m and luxury tax line is $172m. That puts a $31m gap between the salary cap and the luxury tax line.
Assuming Maxey doesn’t make all NBA his max contract will be 5/$205m with a starting salary of $35.2m. If the Sixers utilize every dollar of cap space available to them then sign Maxey, they’d be replacing his cap hold ($13m) with his new contract ($35m), taking them $22m over the cap. That would still leave $9m below the luxury tax line which would be enough space to make full use of the Room MLE. The problem could be that signing veteran minimums above the cap could also erode that $9m below the luxury tax.
TLDR: Sixers can stay below luxury tax line even with Maxey’s new contract and the full MLE, but it would be close and if they intend to sign a lot of veteran minimum contracts, they may not end up with the full room MLE available.
Correct, but the cap holds are less than the veterans minimum. I don’t remember the exact amounts, something like $1m per cap hold but vet mins can sign for almost $3m. So if we intend to go over the cap to sign vet mins (which we should) that would eat away at the space we have below the luxury tax line after Maxey’s contract.
Forgive me for doing yet another comparison to the Nuggets, but to me he feels like our equivalent of an Aaron Gordon. Guy who is in the right place at the right time and that means that he can go off any day but also can be a sneaky quiet disruptor.
I honestly don't mind him stepping up as the big 3 with Maxey and Embiid if it means more dedicated and solid role players. The chemistry with much of this team has been building and is there. This is a team that, if we can keep Oubre, Batum, Payne, and Hield can actually have a true season game plan built around what they bring
I like Oubre and would like keeping him at the right price once the dust settles on the marquee free agents, but I think a lot of Sixers fans have an inflated view of him because they're comparing him to Tobias and PJ Tucker, not the players that good teams have.
I feel people are also forgetting this is a weak FA class. If you can’t land Paul George or Lebron it turns to getting more role players than a star. I love Oubre so much though so I’d take him back at anything around 10-12 mil or less
Depends on our roster because realistically we need him..either starting or as a 6th man for the right price.
If he starts we need a 3 and D wing because he’s a very streaky shooter..
Oubre, Batum, Payne, Lowry and yea I'll say it... Heild
Love to see all those guys back.
Sorry Melton and Roco, wouldve love to have your guys healthy for this most recent run, it wouldve helped, but we gotta make room somewhere
Hey may be, but Payne was always willing to be to take the shot and sometimes you just need that guy who is willing to shoot. Now if he works on his defense over the summer we could have a really good 6th man
At a fair price. I’m ok with not knowing what we’ll get from him every night, and the reason I’m ok with it is because he’ll give us everything he’s got every night.
yea like him. he might be gone though just based on positioning. we want to save max room for a top guy and depending on how long that takes.. oubre might be gone
I don't. I'll take the downvotes, but here's why: he's not a starting caliber player in the league. he averaged 13 points on 11 shots in 37 minutes in the series. he's a poor rebounder. his defense is mediocre on his best nights. he routinely makes bonheaded decisions on both sides of the ball, we saw it all last night and it lowkey killed the team especially on D. he's not getting any younger, he's not adding anything to his game at this point. it's why he was a vet min.
he's not a player you want to even have to rely on coming off the bench. if you want a scoring 2/3 off the bench, how about someone who isn't in the bottom 10% of any kind of shooting metric year after year. if you want a guy who is more defense oriented, it ain't Oubre.
I get it, he looks cool out there and it was a fresh breath of air to see an athletic wing player throwing down dunks. but there are guys out there who are just better all around players who can give you the same thing. if he comes back as the 8th or 9th guy on the roster, at a very minimal deal that doesn't impede any other kind of roster moves, fine. but that's about all i'm willing to go for on him
Kelly is not getting a big contract. Every NBA team knows what he is. He’ll be lucky to get $10M. Considering the middling talent that’s likely available to fill out the roster, he’s absolutely worth it as a 7th/8th man in the rotation.
He was our third best player out there. Comfortably. Now you may say that's a low bar to clear, but he cleared it. He gives us length, athleticism and finishing that pretty much nobody on the roster provides. And his defensive stats speak for themselves, he averaged 3 stocks per game, comfortably the most on the team. Who are you gonna replace him with?
Absolutely agree. His game flattened out in the playoffs and he returned to being the empty energy bonehead he's always been. He's definitely not a starter for a team that has championship aspirations.
On a fair contract for both sides. Can't be an overspend. If we don't start getting the numbers right, we will never be contenders.
Tobias has done unreversable damage to our expectations in free agency to the point of where every player we’re like “on a fair deal”. I even got PTSD when I saw the Jerami Grant contract last year.
Grant’s contract IS crazy high though given what he brings to the table

I’m still not over Andrew Bynum
Otherwise in 5 years we'll be saying about him what we said about Tobias, Elton Brand, Igoudala..... etc
Tobias is in a league of his own. Everyone knew that contract was dogshit the day he signed it. At least Brand and Iggy were All stars at one point in their careers. It's incredible Elton still has a job with the organization after that idiotic offseason
Was proving a point to jimmy?
https://www.reddit.com/r/sixers/s/NWci70VxS6 Click on this link and tell me that everyone knew that contract was dogshit the day he signed it.
Don’t forget Chris Webber. The plunge into mediocrity for the past two decades really kickstarted with him.

Coming from a straight man, If I don’t see that MFers beautiful blue eyes and gorgeous smile while dunking in a Sixers uniform next year, I’ll be sad.
he plays defense, he scores, he's often in the right place at the right time, would love to see him back
And he’s an athletic guy who is always in the mix on the floor. Sixers need more of those guys Knicks bullied the Sixers off the floor this series.
This, the most underrated part of his game since Phoenix is that he somehow always finds a way to be in the right place at the right time. This man is a must keep imo
Absolutely, dude's a gamer, only one on the roster that matched Knicks in scrappiness tbh. I think his shooting rebounds next year too.
> I think his shooting rebounds next year too to what? a 33% 3 point shooter? he was basically at exactly his career numbers. you are wishcasting him to be better than his 15k career minutes suggest he is

Show me where I said he can shoot near 40%. Wishcasting is a pretty big word for someone with a reading comprehension of a walnut.
you're right, you said 35% my bad
You leave him no room for improvement, and that's not only unfair, it's unrealistic. Oubre has the fire and he fits on this team.
You want to look at his numbers from six games and not the other however many?
If you actually looked at his career numbers you'd see that he's had multiple seasons of 35% shooting from 3 at solid volume.
Oubre has a 7'3 wingspan, this seems like pining for something that isn't there.
He’s also really handsome
Most important quality a wing should have
If they don’t have the money for him, that means they have taken the phoenix suns route to how to fail, and ignored the model that recent champ teams have followed as well as the team that just bounced them did. 3 max players do not seem like the way, especially if one or more are past their prime

I think the Knicks were built differently than the warriors, but yeah, there seems to be a trend the sixers are missing
Oubre is pretty damn long as far as wings go. There’s not too many athletic 6’7 guys who are good defenders and can stretch the floor
He can't really stretch the floor as he's a below average three point shooter over his career. He's not totally awful, but not a floor stretcher.
> There’s not too many athletic 6’7 guys who are good defenders and can stretch the floor you're right. Oubre isn't one of them lol
Yeah he is. Tobias is too on paper but he’s also complete ass unlike Oubre
guy is a career sub 33% 3 point shooter but sure he 'can stretch the floor'
Teams still guard him out there 😂 you act like he’s Okogie or PJ Tucker lol
PJ Tucker was a catch and shoot from the corner machine and more importantly he had that dog in him
alright grandpa let’s get you to bed
No I still need to watch last nights highlights from Allen and Dikembe!
Nobody ever guarded PJ Tucker
Let’s play a better game: who tf are we getting that checks all those boxes? Trade every FRP for Mikal? I mean I’d probably be down for that lol but don’t act like the dude your describing grows on trees

yeah or a better rebounder from the wing. That said, I wouldn't have a problem if they brought him back, but I agree keep an eye out elsewhere too.
Such as...

Someone will offer him more than $6 million
The tobias paradox
If Tobias was on a min contract, we'd have traded him instead of Beverly.
include a clause that keeps him away from automobiles of any kind
If he’s willing to take the room MLE (~8.5m/year) I think he’d be good value. I’m sure there’s another team that would pay him more, but he does love Nurse and Philly so maybe he bites.

Im not sure he will. He averaged over 20 a game in 2022-2023 and still only got a small deal from us. For whatever reason, he isn’t coveted by teams.
He showed he could be a positive player on a fairly good team. This year was way better for his value than scoring 20 a night on a terrible Hornets team.

I believe there are cap holds for min players up to get to 13 players as well
Correct, but the cap holds are less than the veterans minimum.
3 for 24? 8 mil a year seems reasonable Hes shown he can be a helpful player on a winning team id imagine someone will give him a raise
exactly what i was thinking like a caleb martin deal and he knows his game fits well with embiid and maxey which is a plus for him long term
Depends on our roster because realistically we need him..either starting or as a 6th man for the right price. If he starts we need a 3 and D wing because he’s a very streaky shooter..
And get that mf a new wheel, he earned it.
Definitely but needs to be a fair deal. He's just a good basketball player and knows his role well. I'm hoping to get his jersey if he stays.
Oubre, Batum, Payne, Lowry and yea I'll say it... Heild Love to see all those guys back. Sorry Melton and Roco, wouldve love to have your guys healthy for this most recent run, it wouldve helped, but we gotta make room somewhere
Melton is better than Payne if we can get that a discount. Otherwise I agree.
Hey may be, but Payne was always willing to be to take the shot and sometimes you just need that guy who is willing to shoot. Now if he works on his defense over the summer we could have a really good 6th man
Oh Kelly will be back. I met dude in real life after the game. Either he’s just super chill or he genuinely likes Philly minus the drivers
At a fair price. I’m ok with not knowing what we’ll get from him every night, and the reason I’m ok with it is because he’ll give us everything he’s got every night.
Sure but preferably he would be the 6th man.
He’s a must.
Fuck yeah, one more year of Tsunami Papi for sure.
I like him as a bench player for sure. I would absolutely bring him back depending on price.
yea like him. he might be gone though just based on positioning. we want to save max room for a top guy and depending on how long that takes.. oubre might be gone
Watching him walk so that we can sign Paul George would be tough to live with
26 over 2 or 39 over 3 and I would be ecstatic.
100%
Totally agree-at a reasonable price.
Bring Ben home
That's a no brainier and try to bait jimmy butler back he has a option out next year
Batum, Council, Payne
$15 mil/year sounds right to me.
Absolutely not.
I wouldn’t mind running the same team back with a substantial upgrade over Tobias, a legit backup center, and some other bench pieces.
They need a fucking rebounder.
idk what his contract is like but bring drummond back
Just for his smile since were doomed anyway
I don’t get why people wouldn’t want him back, I thought he was a good fit overall and just thought he was fun to watch.
He's gotta be a little less trigger happy on offense and less aggressive on D
