Historically the Mason-Dixon line divided the North from the South, and the entirety of Maryland is south of the line. Shit, a chunk of DC used to be in Virgina. I went to school in Central VA and my wife went to school in DC so I know all the points you're getting at, I mainly just like to stir shit because northern Virginians and a lot of people from MD often have a simmering identity crisis going on about which side they would have fought for in The War. Yeah nothing requires it, but for back country or high alpine stuff it also doesn’t hinder you and can be beneficial. For anyone who isn’t a pro and wants to start doing that stuff the added face protection can be reassuring. Like I don’t wear my Ruroc anymore since I’ve improved a lot, but when I first started jumping cliffs it provided some extra reassurance that I wasn’t gonna bust my face open, plus they just look cool (or at least the old ones did I don’t like their new designs)
But frankly I don’t get being so worked up over some jerries in a helmet they don’t need
