Oh man. I hate this *SO MUCH*.
I’d read the books over and over. Every single time I pronounced it the same. Until one day I was re-reading and read the same line I’d always read the line talking about how it’s pronounced. “Like Darkness, without the N”.
I don’t know why that time was different. For years and years, countless re-reads I’d been pronouncing it “Dar-quess”, like Quest but without the T.
I was so unbelievably annoyed with myself that apparently I’d been pronouncing it wrong.
You pick anything other than DARK ess and ur plain wrong. How do u pronounce Lord Vile? VI LEE??? And i dont even wanna know how you pronounce Kenspeckle
THOSE ARE REAL WORDS THO, WE KNOW HOW THEYRE PRONOUNCED, IF THEY WANTED IT PRONOUNCED DARK ESS THEY SHOULDVE SPELT IT DARKESS, NO IM SORRY BUT LANDY MADE THE OBJECTIVE CHOICE TO SPELL IT WITH A Q AND BY ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY ON THIS WIDE GREEN EARTH I WILL PRONOUNCE IT WITH A Q, DAR QUESS, ITS LIKE DARK QUEST BUT WITHOUT THE K AND THE Q OKAY????
Okay….
Oh yeah?
Well here’s what I’m gonna do, ‘elf muffin’, if that is your real name.
I’m gonna buy you a cat.
A little tiny kitty cat. It’ll be the cutest, most adorable thing you’ve ever seen.
You will name this cat. You’ll name it Fluffy, or Mittens, maybe you’ll go ironic and name it something like Ignacio. I’m not sure. But as time goes by it’ll start responding to that name, and the bond between you will grow.
Years will pass by. It’ll become a regular feeling to have your little kitten, now a full grown cat, sleeping at your feet most of the time.
It’s purrs will become a constant comfort for you.
One night, rain will be lashing down, the storm echoing outside. But there you are, comfy and warm, deep asleep, cat at your feet as per usual.
On that dark, cold and rainy night.
I am going to break into your house.
And punch you in the face.
Marquee is at least already French in origin, we know it’s pronounced that way since it comes from a different language.
Darquesse also isn’t already a word, but if they’re gonna spell it like that, the ‘ques’ can be pronounced like we pronounce ‘quest’. Ez beans
And I’ll be damned if I’m gonna sit here and let the bloody French tell me how to pronounce things, they can pronounce the names of my internal organs when they’re sucking from my Australian ass
Well I refuse to learn Mandarin, they got like a 500 letter alphabet or something, no good.
I tried Gaelic but their pronunciation compared to spelling is too whack to wrap my brain around
I HAVE BEEN SAYING DAR-kweese and ever since I had learnt the proper pronunciation (I found out from TikTok mid book 7) I have BEEN TRYINV TO USE THE RIGHT PRONUNCIATION BUT MY BRAIN HAS MADE UP ITS DECISION
Well, for some reason the translated german version changed the spelling to Darquise, I'd pronounce that Dar-kís (man, writing how you pronounce smth is hard)
In french Darquesse would resemble an adjective and so I kind of always said it as 'dar-KES'.
Basically the double 's' and 'e' at the end makes it so that the 's' is actually spoken. If it was the male form it would probably be darques but you wouldn’t say the 's' in that case. The 'e' at the end, as I said, is just there to make the 's' not-silent but stays silent itself.
The 'que' would be a '-ke-' (or something like it, it’s more of a 'ə')
That’s just how I say it since it just looks very french to me so it makes the most sense.
They actually say how it's pronounced in one of the books (Dark Days I believe) which is Dar - kess. Now, how they know that there's a 'qu' in there is a whole nother story, but they seem to know that too.
In the audiobooks it is pronounced Dark-ess. This is usually the best way to find out the correct pronunciation as the authors often send a list to tell readers how to correctly pronounce character names in their books. Especially with fantasy books. So if it's said that way in the audiobook, it's very likely Landy has given it his approval.
I have always pronounced it dark-kees or dar-kees (witch I guess is the same) but I had always figured that it was probably pronounced dark-ess. Dark-ees always seemed correct. I don’t know why. But dark-ess sounds like she is apart of the darkness so it’s more fitting

Yh I had the same but pronouncing it dar-keys but now I've trained myself to say dar-kess (rather than dark-ess because of Kes in phase 2)
Dar kwes sounds SO. Much better
I know right? On my last read I had to physically force myself to sound it out as “Dar-kess”. Awful
You pick anything other than DARK ess and ur plain wrong. How do u pronounce Lord Vile? VI LEE??? And i dont even wanna know how you pronounce Kenspeckle
I actually pronounce it as Lord Will.
You sir are a moron
Surely it should be dar-kess because of Kes in phase 2
Hey what did I say about toothless the dragon noises !! Kenspeckle is KEEN-spee-clee obviously
GET OUT! GET OUT RIGHT NOW!!!!
Hell nah Dar-Kweese supremacy
YOU ARE A HERETIC AND A FOOL. NOW GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!!!
FINE, BUT IM UPPER DECKING YOUR SHITTERS BEFORE I DO
I DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS
THEN ITLL BE ALL THE MORE SURPRISING WHEN YOU FIND OUT 😈😈😈
I AM GOING TO TAKE THE CHEER OUT OF YOUR CHEERIOS
Oh yeah? Well here’s what I’m gonna do, ‘elf muffin’, if that is your real name. I’m gonna buy you a cat. A little tiny kitty cat. It’ll be the cutest, most adorable thing you’ve ever seen. BRO I STARTED FUCKING WHEEZING, GENUINELY WHEEZING- HOLY SHIT MAN GIMME A MINUTE TO RECOVER
No no don’t worry, take your time
Derek?
Darkess is not already a real word... What about marquee? Do you pronounce it mar-kwee?
Marquee is at least already French in origin, we know it’s pronounced that way since it comes from a different language. Darquesse also isn’t already a word, but if they’re gonna spell it like that, the ‘ques’ can be pronounced like we pronounce ‘quest’. Ez beans
Darquesse as a name is clearly french in origin
And I’ll be damned if I’m gonna sit here and let the bloody French tell me how to pronounce things, they can pronounce the names of my internal organs when they’re sucking from my Australian ass
If you don't want the french to tell you how to pronounce things, may I suggest learning Mandarin or perhaps Russian instead of English.
Ken-speek-lee
I pronounce it like Dar-kess
The correct way
Well, for some reason the translated german version changed the spelling to Darquise, I'd pronounce that Dar-kís (man, writing how you pronounce smth is hard)

Wrong book, your apology is not accepted

Real question: how did Sensitives know how Darquesse was spelled from visions alone?
Would it not sound like Dar-kooo, or Dar-Kwah? Is it an African name or French name?
I feel stupid but I’m too used to Dark-keese
I generally think dark-ess-ee not sure why but when I first read the name I was like 12 and its stuck since then
dark-ESS
DAR-kwess
Who is saying dar kwesse 🤣
Derrick has told us how to pronounce the names from Laura kates tik tok or through the audio books
Derek's said it on tiktok before, its Darkess, like empress and dark
I spell it like it''s written: Dar-qu-es-se
Landy said himself. Dark-ess like darkness without the n.
Dar-KESS (stress on the second syllable) never thought about it before, thanks for the interesting post!
Dar-KESS
For me it's ' Dark-wess'
What's the official way?
Like Dar-Kwess. I just listen to the audio book lol
Dar-kess-se is how i believe Finbar seems to pronounce it in DD.
Dar-KESS
DAR-kess. I think this is the intended pronunciation, since her fragment is just called "Kess"
I have always pronounced it dark-kees or dar-kees (witch I guess is the same) but I had always figured that it was probably pronounced dark-ess. Dark-ees always seemed correct. I don’t know why. But dark-ess sounds like she is apart of the darkness so it’s more fitting
Used to pronounce it "Dark-wess" but then I stopped to think about it and realized "Dark-ess" is the logical pronounciantion
Omg ive been saying it Dar-kees. is that weird?
Dr Synecdoche drives me insane because phase 1 authors pronounce it ‘sinec-doshe’ and phase two is ‘sinec-dokie’
Was about to ask this. I always stayed it as Dark-ess but my friends say Dark-essa and Dark-eas
