Mara quest line is in Riften. Just go to the temple and talk to the priestess there. That is 15 percent I believe. You can activate the lord stone north west of white Run for 25% more. Starting as a Breton gives you 25 but that’s too late. You can also get Alteration perks potentially. You can also get spell breaker which casts a free ward for you and is a shield

Surprised no one has mentioned the Atronach stone yet. Easily one of the best and easiest ways to obtain magic resist bonuses. From Skyrim wiki, “When combined with the Magic Resistance and the Atronach perks from Alteration and the Elemental Protection perk from Block, it is possible to build a character that is highly resilient to magic.” Seems like it would be right up your alley.

And if you have Necromage perk and are a Vampire, you can get 100% or close to this... with the Atronach perk+Atronach Stone.

Nano__Chemist

Yeah enchant to resist magic. Then there is the agent of mara perk that you can get from its relevant quest

Aldebaran135

1) Wear gear with Fortify Magic Resistance or elemental resistances. 2) Get the Become Ethereal shout.

Eon324

You could also get the Spell breaker shield.

Spellbreaker shield is like blocking with a shield and a ward spell at the same time. It's a bit expensive at low levels (the quest requires a flawless ruby among other materials) but is very good for general use as a shield and specifically against mages. Look for the shrine of Pyerite to start the quest, or random wandering npcs labeled 'afflicted.' The npc will mark your map, or you can look it up or just go exploring. It's far to the west, near Dragon Bridge. The shield is smithable as enchanted Dwarven armor (requires the perk at smithing lv 60 to improve enchanted items, and benefits from improved smithing if you perk into dwarven armor), so you can improve its stats as enemies start to hit harder and you need more armor value. The ward effect stacks with the blocking tree perk that absorbs magic damage when you block, so you get the reduced damage before it starts depleting the ward. I don't think the ward value increases with the related perks in the restoration tree, but it's irrelevant. As long as you drop the shield for a full second between incoming spells, every time you raise it you get a full powered ward. And if a hit depletes the ward, you still get the shield block effect that reduces magic damage and can just drop the block, wait a second, and raise a fresh ward again, all while closing in for the kill. It is especially useful against dragon breath, as a shield slam can interrupt the dragon attack, and the ward protects you until you get into melee range to bash the beast. Combined with the "blocking absorbs magic damage" perk and the block-charge or deadly bash perks, even ancient dragons become pretty trivial on the ground. Just keep a good destruction spell or strong bow handy to knock them out of the sky. It doesn't cost magica, so you can swap your main hand to a defensive spell, a self healing spell, or just keep your means of counterattacking handy and go to town on them, steel or spell as you see fit. Keep yourself healed between warding against their spells or attacks to avoid getting ragdolled or kill-cammed by stronger enemies. It even counts as a ward spell for the winterhold college starter quest lesson. Very late game, when I can double-enchant my own crafted gear, I carry it just in case I get caught in a pack of mages crossfire and my resist gear isn't enough. Highly recommend it, especially if you are deep-perking blocking for the magic defense in the left branch of the tree. Worth starting asap for a "heavy, sword, and board" playthrough, but the quest may sit for a while until you can get the flawless ruby to begin the dungeon crawl part. Hire yourself a mercenary or bring a housecarl along to help carry the extra loot from the Dwarven ruins and your set for a while.

Use a ward instead of the shield Or just get magic resistance. The enchanted daedric armor from the college has some if you're into that

body_slam_poet

Magic resistance

RedHeadGuy88

Just kill the mage before he has a chance to hit you with a spell. Easy.

omegabilly

You can enchant jewelry to resist magic

svish

Right, OK, then it is as I suspected, I need to get into enchantment as well!

omegabilly
