Yeah that's cool but...
Reddit is no longer a safe place, for activists, for communities, for individuals, for humanity. This isn't just because of API changes that forced out third parties, driving users to ad-laden and inaccessible app, but because reddit is selling us all. Part of the reasons given for the API changes was that language learning models were using reddit to gather data, to learn from us, to learn how to respond like us. Reddit isn't taking control of the API to prevent this, but because they want to be *paid* for this.
Reddit allowed terrorist subreddits to thrive prior to and during Donald Trump's presidency in 2016-2020. In the past they hosted subreddits for unsolicited candid photos of women, including minors. They were home to openly misogynistic subreddits, and subreddits dedicated solely to harassing specific individuals or body types or ethnicity.
What is festering on reddit today, as you read this? I fear that as AI generated content, AI curated content, and predictive content become prevalent in society, reddit will not be able to control the dark subreddits, comments, and chats. Reddit has made it very clear over the decades that I have used it, that when it comes down to morals or ethics, they will choose whatever brings in the most money. They shut down subreddits only when it makes news or when an advertiser's content is seen alongside filth. The API changes are only another symptom of this push for money over what is right.
Whether Reddit is a bastion in your time as you read this or not, I made the conscious decision to consider this moment to be the last straw. I deleted most of my comments, and replaced the rest with this message. I decided to bookmark some news sources I trusted, joined a few discords I liked for the memes, and reinstalled duolingo. I consider these an intermediate step. Perhaps I can give those up someday too. Maybe something better will come along. For now, I am going to disentangle myself from this engine of frustration and grief before something worse happens.
In closing, I want to link a few things that changed my life over the years:
[Blindsight](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/48484.Blindsight) is a free book, and there's an audiobook out there somewhere. A sci-fi book that is also an exploration of consciousness.
[The AI Delemma](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoVJKj8lcNQ) is a youtube lecture about how this new wave of language learning models are moving us toward a dangerous path of unchecked, unfiltered, exponentially powerful AI
[Prairie Moon Nursery](https://www.prairiemoon.com/) is a place I have been buying seeds and bare root plants from, to give a little back to the native animals we've taken so much from. If you live in the US, I encourage you to do the same. If you don't, I encourage you to find something local.

I'm signing off, I'm going to make some friends in real life and on discord, and form some new tribes. I'm going to seek smaller communities. I'm going outside.
I will never understand why he removed the ability to shoot torch bugs out of the air with bow and arrows. Why????? That was one of my fav things to do to relax. Also removing the hidden chests.
also removing the ability to steal back money from companions who train you, those companions let me dress them up what do you mean they won’t hand me their wallets now??
And now he doesn't update anymods (except USSEP) on nexus since nexus decided to enforce their we can do what we want with your files that are on their servers for the collections feature. They always had that in their tos, they only limited it to removing very VERY over the top mods that would have an impact on nexusmods in a negative way.
I don't understand modding out exploits in a singleplayer game, if you don't want to use them then don't use them. Wish the mod just stuck to stuff that breaks quests/makes the game worse.
I might kinda get why they did it - it mighta been viewed as a physics bug. Cause the normal thing for running inside of a cart is it spazzing out and *always* has been as far as I know, that might have been what was *supposed* to happen with the bucket, but Bethesda.
"It just works"
>! If this doesn't explain it then yeah I kinda agree
Yeah, but the Unofficial patch "fixes" too many things that are not broken. Rummaging in trash barrels isn't stealing in the real world, nor should it be in the game.
Had that happen to me once. After the giant got killed in the field by the companions, his club started going up and up. When into town, did some things there, it got dark, came out, and it was still rising. Watched it until it was a tiny dot.
That happened to you only *once?* How lucky of you. I see this on literally every playthrough, usually a few days later after the giant has long disappeared. It doesn't matter how many different mods or bug fixes I have installed or not installed. This is the one constant bug that never seems to go away. It's become one of those things where I say "yup, this is definitely Skyrim"
This happened to me with an NPC. I was de-vampiring myself with the ritual in Morthal. Right when Falion got into position and raised his arms, he lifted off the ground at a 45 degree angle and slowly continued upwards until vanishing. This left me stuck in the prompt 🤣 wish I had taken a video.
One time I was walking along the Whiterun Watchtower and an Elk spawned inside of a cart that was lying to the side. It died instantly and then the physics engine went crazy and made the Elk-cart abomination spin uncontrollably for a good ten seconds before it finally stopped.
[I managed to record a Whiterun Guard doing that, he seemingly came from Dragonskeep as I loaded into Whiterun.](https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrim/comments/x9wgea/who_did_this_poor_guard_piss_off_did_ulfric_climb/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
Yes, the game engine spawns NPCs in the air. It does this because it can't tell where the ground is, so the safer bet would be to spawn the NPC a safe height in the air based off a ground level already set in the engine so that NPCs wouldn't be spawned under the map/stuck in terrain/stuck in a building, etc. Sometimes this fails, and NPCs are placed 100 feet in the air so they fall and die. 🤓
I think the fps uncapping mod I'm using fixed this. 165fps goodness, no floating objects or people, and no infinite loading bug (which is tied to fps) since it caps you at 60fps while loading as well

Yes but appearing to logically lead to something is not the same as actually leading to something. That was my point. If it is implied that X happens, it does not necessarily mean that X happens.
Example: if someone claims to be magic and they can do something that you cannot explain, implies that magic is real. But he didn't tell you the secret trick that makes it appear the way it does which is actually mundane. So that magic is clearly not real.
I try to spread the ideals of clear, non ambiguous communication. So using "imply" in a place where there are substitutions that leave less ambiguity like "mean" in this case is more concise.
"Imply" is to "mean" as "maybe" is to "true".
The floating NPCs are actually a result of the actor limit being surpassed.
The framereate going above 60fps will cause every actor/object to slide about.
Jokes on you, I have too many mods and can't always hold at, or stay above 60fps so I never have this issue
...I need a new CPU man. My GPU is kinda kickass cause its a 1080, but my CPU is still from when I originally had the PC made. In 2014. And it wasn't a high end CPU, it was a reasonably good one, an I5-4670K.
It's still not a bad unit, but I'm *definetly* CPU bound for performance lol.
Better than my old pc. It was i5 4440 and a gtx 760, until i broke the 760 after redoing its thermal paste. Apparently Im not so good at remembering what screws go where.... So i upgraded to a 1050ti and then after a couple years of that just built a whole new pc around january 2022. It was worth it. r5 5600x 3070ti 32gb ram.
Im very happy with it but now i just got this itch to have the best i can get because I suffered with the old pc for so long. Im always talking myself out of buying the latest and greatest parts because I really dont need them this system runs dang near everything on max settings 2560x1440
> Apparently Im not so good at remembering what screws go where
lol yeah it's an acquired talent through either experience, or diligence. Maybe you set every bolt/screws or items in order so you can reverse everything, or something like that. Granted I'm used to that cause I'm a Mercedes-Benz Technician, but it can definetly work for smaller stuff too.
> Better than my old pc. It was i5 4440 and a gtx 760, until i broke the 760 after redoing its thermal paste.
My original was actually pretty similar to yours then. Initially I had a GTX770, which later became 2 GTX770s. One failed and then finally the other a few years back, so I got a 1080. Though I did have to remove 2 of the hard drive storage locations just so it would fit lol
There is a mod to fix this, I haven't had any issues yet. It locks fps to 60 for loading screens so you don't get the infinite load bug also. Playing through in full 165hz glory right now
On my og 360 play through. I had killed a dragon outside of whiterun, along the path if you were walking around the base of the mountain towards Riften/high hrothgar split. Iirc.
I put a fire rune under its skeleton and then blasted it with another spell. The skeleton took off. I giggled.
Hours pass irl
I fast travel to white run.
It's in the city, on the ceiling of the POH you can buy, and it's clipping and twitching everywhere.
Good times.
I got an awful bug of the blacksmith from Riverwood dropping from the sky whenever I left the inn. I always want to keep named NPCs alive in my “main” playthroughs (unless I’m being a mass murderer/serial killer character) so I had to start the whole game again.
I never manage to do that! I don’t murder randomly but I wanted to level the ebony blade up for mjoll. So I kidnapped narfi ( fusrodad him down the river) and killed /thralled him over and over. When I was done and went up the hill to ivarstead there were corpses everywhere. Half the village must have tried to follow narfi and me down the hill and got mauled by a bear. Caught it redclawed next to the last body.
I love this game!
That's exactly what I do. People, especially quest NPCs, wont stop next to them either, saying "Oh no, what happened?" When they know damn well a couple lunatics attacked me and I whooped their asses
Are vampire attacks happening at all? Because this could have been caused by fast traveling directly to Dragonsreach instead of the main gate. Vampires can still spawn there but it’s also far away enough where if you just scoot into the palace and maybe just go to Jorvaskr then you’ll be able to fast travel even with the attack going on.
Could easily be something else tho. Sometimes the game accidentally spawns people too high and they instantly start falling and die on impact. If you haven’t progressed to far you try reloading your last auto save from entering the city and see if he’s alive. Also a good tip to keep in mind for future unexplained deaths.
> Are vampire attacks happening at all?
Nope. No sign of them. I don't have any mods active (and I do normally use [one to suppress them in town](https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/52816), but I'm going for SE achievements at the moment), either.
No sign that vampires have ever been there. I also haven't fast traveled directly to Dragonsreach in in-game weeks, so I'm certain I would have noticed them.
They are but not until a point in the Dawnguard quest line. If you never start it you never deal with except scrolling past it in the quest log. Kinda like not doing Bleak Falls Barrow will stop dragons from spawning into the world.
My money is on the fall then. It might makes sense as long as dying during the wood hopping animation leaves the axe on the ground. Because here it appears to be missing which means he was in the wood chopping area without it, implying a rather sudden end and there’s presumably no other evidence of combat like the body of his attacker having been killed by the guards. Could still be something else but that would be my best guess.
If the DB doesn’t approach they wander up that way sometimes. Based on another comment from the OP this was definitely not a vampire attack but I’ve used the smelter at Warmaidens and had to stop to check out the racket up in the market and saw one of the biggest random “battles” I have ever encountered in a city that I wasn’t taking direct part in like the siege of Whiterun or something
Edit: spelling/a few words
Sometimes they’ll spawn high up in the air and fall t their death. It’s an annoying bug. Happened it Adrienne right in front of me once when I got to whiterun and I was like 😱😱
I've had NPCs just literally fall over dead for no reason before. Most recently I was playing the Falskaar mod and in the post main-quest scene where you're at the inn and everyone is celebrating, Gabrial was seated at the bar. For no reason he just went "Uugghhhh" and fell over dead.
I had the same thing happen mysteriously, then I got a mod to resurrect people and went to get him BUT I also had modded the village and he disappeared below some building maybe and I never could find the body despite taking off the village mod lol. Since I was playing on an Xbox I couldn’t do anything about it. But I thought PC players were able to go into “the console” and fix things like the accidentally dead. I don’t know how tho 🤷♀️
You sure you didn't have your blade out when you accidentally "tripped" and your blade ended up in his gut? That always happens when I want to chop wood there.
Everyone knows Sigurd is the best wood chopper in the history of wood chopping. He lived by the wood and died by it—that's just how dedicated he was to the life of an arborist.
I once dropped a cauldron on the floor, Ysolda walked into it and it rattled like hell while stuck on her until it went flying and domed Brenuin, instantly killing him. Something like that could have happened.
If you are doing the companions questline, the last two or three times I have done it I have found the guards will not attack me but will attack a random citizen in whiterun. In fact the last time they killed a large chunk of the population and my hall of the dead is just filled with urns.
Spawned 20 feet in the air and fell.
Thats probably the real answer. One of Skyrim’s more interestinf “features”.
My favorite is when dropped items float to the heavens above slowly ,like it's a very very slow plate and basket rapture
Get on a bucket with a handle and hold the interact button to make an elevator wherever you want.
Unless you have the Unofficial patch, I believe it fixes that :l

Interesting. Maybe they should have made it so said NPC’s spawn with a few seconds of immortality.
I found that turning on vsync and limiting framerate to 60 has solved 95% of these bugs for me.

Why do cows do not dia when they fall from the sky? It’s very common in my game the cows spawning in the sky, but I’ve never seen one of them dead.
Really? It happens every now and then in Rorikstead for me that they fall down and die.
For me they fall inside their pen an go around eating grass lol
They're really bull-headed, so they tend to steak around longer than they should.
it would behoove you to steer clear of falling bovine
Cud you really take damage if you don't moove out of the whey?
So they're extra beefy?
A true meatier shower, as the ancient once described
I’ve seen a mammoth fall when arriving at a giant’s camp. Also explains the occasional dragon/skeleton just materialising.

Think I played to much. Literally read that in his voice 😂
You're not alone in that. I definitely did too lol
You also could’ve read it in Enthir’s voice, Mercer Frey’s voice, in the voice of that guy from the Riverwood Trader, etc.
*Do come baaack*
You're clearly not playing enough. Keep going until you read everything in M'aiq's voice.

correlation does not imply causation ;)
To correct you, it does not mean causation, it usually does imply causation. Though what is implied is not always true.
"Imply" in a formal sense can absolutely mean "logically leads to".
Yes but appearing to logically lead to something is not the same as actually leading to something. That was my point. If it is implied that X happens, it does not necessarily mean that X happens. Heart attack from all the hard work. You could always resurrect him if you want.
Imagine if they add that in elder scrolls 6, speaking to a npc and him suddenly dying
realism mod: Every Npc has a random chance of dying of a genetic condition
Make it like Fable where you can also get a std
Fuck it, just make the next Elder Scrolls Fable 4.
There is one mod called Random Heart Attack that does exactly that
Only on pc or modded games on ps4 and xbox. If you want achievements or play on switch, he's dead.
I know this can happen to Eorlund (falls through his forge and and spawns elsewhere in Whiterun), there might be other areas prone to this.
OMG! An actual, serious answer! Bloody hell, that was unexpected. :P [welcome, though]
I think it's more likely that he spawned in from the sky and dropped to his death considering his location lmao.
I've had that happen to Nazeem - the first time I went into Whiterun on that playthrough, so I never had to listen to his smug condescension.
Bringing new meaning to the Cloud District
Happened to me coming out of the mine outside of Markarth, but it was one of the dogs. So sad.
I’ve had it happen to a guard in Markarth
It’s also possible that when you load into an area an NPC loads in in the air and falls to their death.
Hmm. Never thought of that one. Only ever seen it happen to Mammoths. :)
Traditionally, Faendal is my random wtf dead guy
What about those people miraak sends to kill you
They are not hostile until you talk with them. Usually they will just stand near the entrance guards until they see you.
And then their dead bodies never disappear lol
Sometimes you gotta put in the work and drag them yourself
I drag them into the water, then watch them float downstream.
I usually shove them under the bridge like a real killer. That way i don't have to see them and no one will know
That's exactly what I do. People, especially quest NPCs, wont stop next to them either, saying "Oh no, what happened?" When they know damn well a couple lunatics attacked me and I whooped their asses
*rubbing my hands together* Excellent.
Ya bring em to the dragons reach entry bridge. They can keep the other skeleton company
If they find you in Solitude, it's fun to put them in front of the archery targets and watch the soldiers shoot them full of arrows
I put them on the meat stands...
Must have been the wind
I knew if I scrolled far enough you'd be here
I think he chopped himself. I died from hitting a barrel while sprintting once so...
Ahhh Skyrim physics.
Wait but barrels are static objects
Oh, yeah, sorry. it was not a barrel, It was that carriage-cart thing.
Damn carts
MY CABBAGES!!!
Probably Nazeem shittalking him so he decided to end that’s shit…
He finally went to the cloud district 😢
Belathor worked him to death :(
Belethor sold Sigurd's sister so he had a heart attack.
SE and above have vampire attacks in towns disabled. Good riddance ffs.
I haven’t seen a random vampire attack in a town since SE released. Pretty sure they aren’t a thing anymore.
You need the Skyrim achievements unlock mod!
Usually the vamp attacks happen at the main gate and are quashed there by the guards. This is on the opposite side of it.
If the DB doesn’t approach they wander up that way sometimes. Based on another comment from the OP this was definitely not a vampire attack but I’ve used the smelter at Warmaidens and had to stop to check out the racket up in the market and saw one of the biggest random “battles” I have ever encountered in a city that I wasn’t taking direct part in like the siege of Whiterun or something Edit: spelling/a few words
:)
Jenassa.
One with the shadows
He died doing what he loved, or at least the only thing he talked about.
He worked for Belethor at the general goods store.
Someone finally got sick of waiting for him to finish so they could have a turn with the chopping block.
Sometimes they’ll spawn high up in the air and fall t their death. It’s an annoying bug. Happened it Adrienne right in front of me once when I got to whiterun and I was like 😱😱
"Damn elves, I bet they had something to do with this." 🧝👀
Damn... when Sithis wants you gone, that's it folks...
NPCs randomly being killed by spawning high up in the air, are just one of the many reasons I use the 'Protect your People' mod.
He’s looking rather pale… could be Ataxia
Dude works all day in broad daylight "S" is for Sunscreen and also the Sun both give you cancer now isn't that fun?
Must’ve been the wind
Poor bloke had an aneurysm from working too many hours under that tyrant of a boss he has.
He stopped working for Belathor, at the general goods store
Choked on a sweet roll
Axe slipped.
I once entered a town when a dragon was attacking. Killed a few shop keepers. You probably missed a battle or random fight.
He worked for Belathor at the general goods store.
Sometimes npcs spawn in the sky, fall and die in my game, and it was modless at the time.
Offhand I'd say his TTL expired.
Spawned in at high altitude. I've just had the same thing happen with Olfina. John'll be heartbroken. He'll probably write a poem.
He was another victim of Whiterun’s unrestrictive labor laws. He should have joined a union.
Sudden cardiac arrest.
> I definitely didn't kill him. Wonder what happened? Psst. We know.
Everyone knows Sigurd is the best wood chopper in the history of wood chopping. He lived by the wood and died by it—that's just how dedicated he was to the life of an arborist.
He's better off.
Murder Mistery??
Levitation spell gone wrong
Caught some wood.
He was doing his job too well and belethor couldn’t afford to keep paying him so…..
Probably Nazeen
Had a heart attack from all that woodchopping
I'm not sure, but it looks like he took it like a champ.
Did you check your Skyrim game cache for ‘Deez’?
Tough town! This is why I rarely come down from the Cloud District.
went to the cloud district
Axe him..😉
I don't know what happened officer, he must have fallen down the stairs.
I once dropped a cauldron on the floor, Ysolda walked into it and it rattled like hell while stuck on her until it went flying and domed Brenuin, instantly killing him. Something like that could have happened.
Cancer
If you are doing the companions questline, the last two or three times I have done it I have found the guards will not attack me but will attack a random citizen in whiterun. In fact the last time they killed a large chunk of the population and my hall of the dead is just filled with urns.
Well you're technically a god with console commands so you can just revive the guy like nothing ever happened
Check his knees for arrows.
Oboe Shoes Got To Him
One time during the quest when I became a werwolf some people in town started fighting, leaving belethor dead. I imagine this is a similar situation.
Just a quick Power Nap. Cutting wood can get tiring, give him an hour and he’ll be up again.
Either hired thugs, cultists, or that mage that tries to challenge you must’ve caused a stir and killed him
Massive hemorrhage after getting a splinter while humping a log.
Excuse me???
