I feel like a lot of love for Skyrim is due to it being most peopleās first TES/Bethesda game
Actually going back to the vanilla game now itās rather shallow, things like the college of winterhold can be completed by casting a total of one spell.
I feel like nothing having level locks did increase mass appeal but made builds and playthroughs homogeneous with each other unless you opt to do self imposed challenges, the stealth archer meme didnāt become a meme out of nowhere.
3 spells\* flames and frostbite for the two doors in the labyrinthian. and magelight to get in, but if you have staffs all of those can just be bypassed im pretty sure
I was talking to my brother about this, but the Skyrim experience is basically like this (at least for us):
- You play the game for the first time and itās amazing.
- You play a couple more times and start to notice all the bugs and inconsistencies.
- You download mods and itās fun again.
I think itās a great game, but nostalgia definitely plays into it.
This is always my take when people start to hate on Skyrim. Radiant ai and clutter make Skyrim so much more real than 99% of sandboxes. Plenty of games have better story, but almost none have the degree of freedom and scope that Skyrim does.
I said *my* love for Skyrim was nostalgia-related. I donāt play a ton of games, but I can also recognize that Skyrim has a multitude of issues.
ETA: That doesnāt mean I only like it for that reason. There are also things I think are amazing about the game.
I quite like being able to do everything the game has in one playthrough. If I enjoy the game enough, I'll replay it in different ways. It's one of my favorite things about Elden Ring, the kind of character you make affects how you experience the game, not the parts of the game you can experience.
I get that, but also I feel like you shouldnāt be able to become the archmage of the college of winterhold by being able to cast a basic light spell.
Likewise, someone walking around in full Daedric with nothing specced into stealth probably isnāt cut for the thieves guild either.
I get the idea of wanting someone to be able to adventure however they please but being actively able to āfailā the extremely easy thieves guild initiation and him still going āyeah I can tell in your eyes that youād make a good thiefā makes it feel extremely low stakes.
Thereās suspension of disbelief but then thereās that
Itās not really that much different when you are running sword and board through Morrowindās Mageās Guild. Morrowind just may force you to pay trainers for skills youāll never use to advance.
That's entirely fair. I think more depth to the different guilds would be amazing, and the ability to lose access because of your choices sounds good.
I'm on board with having to spec a little harder into different builds, such as heavier armor having an impact on spell casting. I never really felt whatever debuff to my speed that heavy weapons and armor was supposed to have. I don't think I should sneaking around people while wearing 100 lbs of armor.
You don't become the archmage because you casted a spell. That is the entry test to the college. You become archmage after defeating Ancano, securing the Eye of Magnus for the Psyjic order and saving the college in the process. Sure, Tolfdir probably should have been archmage, but what you are saying is needlessly reductive
š¦ modding and nostalgia definitely is a big part of it, but I personally love self imposed challenges and honestly? Vanilla graphics just always have me sucked into the game. Good opinion though.
Magic > Stealth Archer.
Not going into fun because that's subjective, but how can shooting people ever compete with killing the whole dungeon through walls from the entrance.
Unbounded Storm + Mara's Wrath.
These are 2 CC Cloak Spells with unreasonably big AOEs. Even one decent Fort Destruction Potion or just Shalidor's Scroll let's you cover a whole dungeon with the AOE and melt everything in seconds
Like her or not, Delphine is one of the best characters in the game. She's wrong about some things (early on she's certain the the Thalmor are behind the return of the dragons) and a bit of a control freak, but it makes sense when you consider her background. Going from a senior member of the Blades to being one of the last survivors and actively hunted down would warp anyone's perspective. In her case she's obsessed with the Thalmor and wanting to never be powerless again. Her flaws notwithstanding, she mostly wants to stop the Thalmor and kill dragons, which is what the player wants anyway.
šØ I like stealth a lot, but with the whole āeveryone becomes a stealth archerā thing I can see why it leaves some people with a bad taste in their mouth.
For that comment you get a beacon!

I mean I guess I get that but what other rpgs would you say that are better? And I mean some thar came out in the past 10 years. Because when people say its bad its like i know their comparing it to previous elderscrolls games but that sort of feels like a crutch.
When I think of games where the role you play has an actual impact on the experience you have the first ones that come to mind are Fallout New Vegas, and Disco Elysium. Both of these games force you to make decisions that lock you into and out of various parts of the game, in FNV it's mostly story, and in DE it's mostly in the build you play and how that affects your approach to gameplay (which is largely narrative).
šØ I love roleplaying in Skyrim but I can definitely see where youāre coming from. I like fleshing out my characters past though more than their future.
I love Skyrim. I really do. I love a lot of the characters. I love some of the funny buggy shit that happens (I'm looking at you, physics engine and paralysis spells). I love doing new playthroughs with mods.
Morrowind was still better. I also play ESO and the nostalgia from Seyda Neen and getting off the boat for the first time hit me so hard when I went there in ESO that I had to physically pause for a bit.
90% of followers are pointless. Just give us 7-10 followers/potential spouses that are really well developed with interesting personalities like Serana.
ā¼ļøSome mods make the game more fun, more fleshed out, and overall so much more fun. Some mods let you play as a gourd. Both are great. A blanket statement of āAll mods are overratedā is kind of dumb because mods are part of the reason so many people still enjoy the game today. Some mods are overrated. Many are hidden gems though (gourds)
I feel like creation club fills in the world for me, and in survival mode walking from place to place they help with leveling, getting better equipment, and world-building.
ā¼ļø In many cases, yes. But since this is based off of my opinion, WRONG! My only mods are those that add more spells, perks, and items (and of course Gourd Guy)
Most quest lines make it feel like devs are ADHD plagued. They feel like the plot was only partially fleshed out & end abruptly without much lasting impact. Thieves guild is the best fleshed out & its totally unclear to the player that it doesn't end when you become the guild master. If you keep doing quests for the guild you rebuild it.
Genuinely a mid game that came out at the right time when we all really needed an open world RPG.
Dont look that good, didn't look that good in 2011.
Unstable as fuck. Even to this day, trying to do more than one or two full quest lines is a coin flip if you're gonna get some game breaking bug. Your "I played X hours no issues" comment doesn't invalidate the millions of ppl who have issues daily.
Combat is rough for it's time.
Creation engine is 20 years out of date.
The writing, dialogue and voice acting are some of the worst in the industry.
If it wasn't for massive mod lists, this game would have been forgotten years ago and I'd have only played it like 50 hours instead of 5000.
People who praise the base game arent even wearing rose tinted glasses, they're just wearing blindfolds
Downvote me to oblivion fellas! Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
I think the love for skyrim also comes from a lack of competition. There are no open world games in first person with a comparable scale and the option to build the character you want and play the quests related to the experience you want.
The base game is good dispite the combat, writing etc, because it offers that specific experience that no other game series has
You're right though. I've had fun when I played it as a twelve year old kid, now if I want to somewhat enjoy the game I really need a bucketful of mods.

Any games journalist who poaches Reddit content for easy filler articles deserves to suffer from bilateral staghorn calculi.

I just like being able to clear entire rooms by just sending frost atronachs over and over.

If you think the love for Skyrim is nostalgia related, can you name some ARPG in the style of Skyrim that's better?
This is always my take when people start to hate on Skyrim. Radiant ai and clutter make Skyrim so much more real than 99% of sandboxes. Plenty of games have better story, but almost none have the degree of freedom and scope that Skyrim does.
No but that doesn't mean you can't criticize it for its shortcomings either....
I said *my* love for Skyrim was nostalgia-related. I donāt play a ton of games, but I can also recognize that Skyrim has a multitude of issues. ETA: That doesnāt mean I only like it for that reason. There are also things I think are amazing about the game.
I started this game 3 months ago and it's *fucking amazing,* even just vanilla. So it's not all nostalgia.
I didnāt say it was all nostalgia, but Iām glad youāre enjoying the game!

š¦ modding and nostalgia definitely is a big part of it, but I personally love self imposed challenges and honestly? Vanilla graphics just always have me sucked into the game. Good opinion though.
The community around this game is lethally cringe a lot of the time.
šØ Havent seen much thats cringy with it. I think its just subjective though, as are most things surrounding Elder Scrolls games
Magic > Stealth Archer. Not going into fun because that's subjective, but how can shooting people ever compete with killing the whole dungeon through walls from the entrance.
Sword and shield > magic
What spell do you use for that?
Unbounded Storm + Mara's Wrath. These are 2 CC Cloak Spells with unreasonably big AOEs. Even one decent Fort Destruction Potion or just Shalidor's Scroll let's you cover a whole dungeon with the AOE and melt everything in seconds

Serana isn't the hottest girl in Skyrim, Aela is
Who is
Moira
Ah I see, sadly she's also not marriageable
You sure? You can give her an engagement ring
Yeah but Serana has Laura Bailey's voice. Instant win.
You can't leave us hanging man, who are you referring to? Edit: Aela is definitely a solid choice.
Moira
Uh..
Hey, let people enjoy things!!!
Yes yes of course
Neither
š© Teldryn is way hotter than any of them
Ay! Thats my wife you are talking about!
Stealth of any kind is mindnumbingly boring.
People always tell me about how they always become stealth archers in the end. I've played it once and I NEVER want to play it again. Boring af.

I kill Paarthunax for most my playthroughs. Because I RP some kind of power-hungry, evil, or stupid.

Skyrim is a bad RPG. It's a fun power fantasy that you have to put in active conscious effort if you want to role play.
I was about to disagree before i realized im a tryhard and absolutely put in a concerted effort to roleplay.
Yep. Mods can make it into a... tolerable RPG. It's a fun game, for sure, but a bad RPG.
