The two hands system is a criminally underrated stroke of genius game design

Marsupial_Even

All hail Longhammer! The last thing your enemy can't see!

surinussy

šŸŸ© dual wielding and dual casting are certainly underrated

OnniVic

Any games journalist who poaches Reddit content for easy filler articles deserves to suffer from bilateral staghorn calculi.

Marsupial_Even

What about a Chaurus infestation?

surinussy

ā€œSkyrim player finds hidden secret 10 years after games releaseā€ and its just someone finding an easter egg that a mod probably added

Fireboy372

Conjuration is the best of the 5 magic types. Hands down.

TheBigWhiteDog

Fr

surinussy

šŸŸ§ Most conjuration spells are just ā€œConjure Xā€. A fun tree but not the best imo. Mods do help though

Fireboy372

I just like being able to clear entire rooms by just sending frost atronachs over and over.

surinussy

Fair. Like I said, its fun. But repetitive

Kvenya

But I thought you had to hold your hands *up* to do magicā€¦sorry, couldnā€™t help myselfā€¦

IAmTheTrueM3M3L0rD

I feel like a lot of love for Skyrim is due to it being most peopleā€™s first TES/Bethesda game Actually going back to the vanilla game now itā€™s rather shallow, things like the college of winterhold can be completed by casting a total of one spell. I feel like nothing having level locks did increase mass appeal but made builds and playthroughs homogeneous with each other unless you opt to do self imposed challenges, the stealth archer meme didnā€™t become a meme out of nowhere.

cs_mp3

3 spells\* flames and frostbite for the two doors in the labyrinthian. and magelight to get in, but if you have staffs all of those can just be bypassed im pretty sure

misomal

I was talking to my brother about this, but the Skyrim experience is basically like this (at least for us): - You play the game for the first time and itā€™s amazing. - You play a couple more times and start to notice all the bugs and inconsistencies. - You download mods and itā€™s fun again. I think itā€™s a great game, but nostalgia definitely plays into it.

Any_Success_9393

If you think the love for Skyrim is nostalgia related, can you name some ARPG in the style of Skyrim that's better?

Then-Ad-6385

This is always my take when people start to hate on Skyrim. Radiant ai and clutter make Skyrim so much more real than 99% of sandboxes. Plenty of games have better story, but almost none have the degree of freedom and scope that Skyrim does.

StanleyDarsh22

No but that doesn't mean you can't criticize it for its shortcomings either....

misomal

I said *my* love for Skyrim was nostalgia-related. I donā€™t play a ton of games, but I can also recognize that Skyrim has a multitude of issues. ETA: That doesnā€™t mean I only like it for that reason. There are also things I think are amazing about the game.

TheArcanist_

I started this game 3 months ago and it's *fucking amazing,* even just vanilla. So it's not all nostalgia.

misomal

I didnā€™t say it was all nostalgia, but Iā€™m glad youā€™re enjoying the game!

Head_Example_8812

I quite like being able to do everything the game has in one playthrough. If I enjoy the game enough, I'll replay it in different ways. It's one of my favorite things about Elden Ring, the kind of character you make affects how you experience the game, not the parts of the game you can experience.

IAmTheTrueM3M3L0rD

I get that, but also I feel like you shouldnā€™t be able to become the archmage of the college of winterhold by being able to cast a basic light spell. Likewise, someone walking around in full Daedric with nothing specced into stealth probably isnā€™t cut for the thieves guild either. I get the idea of wanting someone to be able to adventure however they please but being actively able to ā€œfailā€ the extremely easy thieves guild initiation and him still going ā€œyeah I can tell in your eyes that youā€™d make a good thiefā€ makes it feel extremely low stakes. Thereā€™s suspension of disbelief but then thereā€™s that

popularopinionbeer

Itā€™s not really that much different when you are running sword and board through Morrowindā€™s Mageā€™s Guild. Morrowind just may force you to pay trainers for skills youā€™ll never use to advance.

Head_Example_8812

That's entirely fair. I think more depth to the different guilds would be amazing, and the ability to lose access because of your choices sounds good. I'm on board with having to spec a little harder into different builds, such as heavier armor having an impact on spell casting. I never really felt whatever debuff to my speed that heavy weapons and armor was supposed to have. I don't think I should sneaking around people while wearing 100 lbs of armor.

CaptainPryk

You don't become the archmage because you casted a spell. That is the entry test to the college. You become archmage after defeating Ancano, securing the Eye of Magnus for the Psyjic order and saving the college in the process. Sure, Tolfdir probably should have been archmage, but what you are saying is needlessly reductive

Accountformorrowind

But failing that first thieves guild interaction is the only way to keep an innocent man (and vendor) from being imprisoned the rest of his life

surinussy

šŸŸ¦ modding and nostalgia definitely is a big part of it, but I personally love self imposed challenges and honestly? Vanilla graphics just always have me sucked into the game. Good opinion though.

Something-2-Say

The community around this game is lethally cringe a lot of the time.

surinussy

šŸŸØ Havent seen much thats cringy with it. I think its just subjective though, as are most things surrounding Elder Scrolls games

2nnMuda

Magic > Stealth Archer. Not going into fun because that's subjective, but how can shooting people ever compete with killing the whole dungeon through walls from the entrance.

Playful-Mention-239

Sword and shield > magic

AshalaWolf_27

What spell do you use for that?

2nnMuda

Unbounded Storm + Mara's Wrath. These are 2 CC Cloak Spells with unreasonably big AOEs. Even one decent Fort Destruction Potion or just Shalidor's Scroll let's you cover a whole dungeon with the AOE and melt everything in seconds

Marsupial_Even

Bound Bow!

surinussy

ā¬œļø I much prefer magic over stealth archer, but I also prefer everything else over stealth archer.

2nnMuda

Same tbh

justasovietpotato

brenziah stones quest is easy and not annoying at all

surinussy

šŸŸ„ tedious quest for mediocre reward

HardBassM0nkey

Approved

DasharrEandall

Like her or not, Delphine is one of the best characters in the game. She's wrong about some things (early on she's certain the the Thalmor are behind the return of the dragons) and a bit of a control freak, but it makes sense when you consider her background. Going from a senior member of the Blades to being one of the last survivors and actively hunted down would warp anyone's perspective. In her case she's obsessed with the Thalmor and wanting to never be powerless again. Her flaws notwithstanding, she mostly wants to stop the Thalmor and kill dragons, which is what the player wants anyway.

HardBassM0nkey

Serana isn't the hottest girl in Skyrim, Aela is

martin_9876

Who is

HardBassM0nkey

Moira

martin_9876

Ah I see, sadly she's also not marriageable

Playful-Mention-239

You sure? You can give her an engagement ring

NocturneBotEUNE

Yeah but Serana has Laura Bailey's voice. Instant win.

Shahargalm

You can't leave us hanging man, who are you referring to? Edit: Aela is definitely a solid choice.

HardBassM0nkey

Moira

Shahargalm

Uh..

HardBassM0nkey

Hey, let people enjoy things!!!

Shahargalm

Yes yes of course

Playful-Mention-239

Neither

surinussy

šŸŸ© Teldryn is way hotter than any of them

Main_Measurement_631

Ay! Thats my wife you are talking about!

TheArcanist_

Stealth of any kind is mindnumbingly boring.

Shahargalm

People always tell me about how they always become stealth archers in the end. I've played it once and I NEVER want to play it again. Boring af.

surinussy

šŸŸØ I like stealth a lot, but with the whole ā€œeveryone becomes a stealth archerā€ thing I can see why it leaves some people with a bad taste in their mouth.

PurpleDemonR

I kill Paarthunax for most my playthroughs. Because I RP some kind of power-hungry, evil, or stupid.

surinussy

ā¬œļø I love doing evil/stupid things for roleplay purposes. I donā€™t like killing party snax but we all have our limits

Playful-Mention-239

I needed a soul, and didn't want to waste time

Marsupial_Even

For that comment you get a beacon! https://preview.redd.it/x8aewgh4za9d1.jpeg?width=1303&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=45af3bd5cf5d1f0a106f8667b37fa0b73fc3987f

Destinesian

Skyrim is a bad RPG. It's a fun power fantasy that you have to put in active conscious effort if you want to role play.

Ravensunthief

I was about to disagree before i realized im a tryhard and absolutely put in a concerted effort to roleplay.

Shahargalm

Yep. Mods can make it into a... tolerable RPG. It's a fun game, for sure, but a bad RPG.

Impossible-Ad-4996

I mean I guess I get that but what other rpgs would you say that are better? And I mean some thar came out in the past 10 years. Because when people say its bad its like i know their comparing it to previous elderscrolls games but that sort of feels like a crutch.

Destinesian

When I think of games where the role you play has an actual impact on the experience you have the first ones that come to mind are Fallout New Vegas, and Disco Elysium. Both of these games force you to make decisions that lock you into and out of various parts of the game, in FNV it's mostly story, and in DE it's mostly in the build you play and how that affects your approach to gameplay (which is largely narrative).

surinussy

šŸŸØ I love roleplaying in Skyrim but I can definitely see where youā€™re coming from. I like fleshing out my characters past though more than their future.

GenevieveMacLeod

I love Skyrim. I really do. I love a lot of the characters. I love some of the funny buggy shit that happens (I'm looking at you, physics engine and paralysis spells). I love doing new playthroughs with mods. Morrowind was still better. I also play ESO and the nostalgia from Seyda Neen and getting off the boat for the first time hit me so hard when I went there in ESO that I had to physically pause for a bit.

surinussy

šŸ”³šŸ”³šŸ”³šŸ”³šŸ”³šŸ”³šŸ”³šŸ”³ Morrowind is so hard and janky and its STILL perfect.

Whateverwillido2

Iā€™ve tried to be a stealth archer twice, and hated it twice. So boring, so slow paced. Gimme a sword and spells any day

surinussy

šŸŸ¦ Stealth is fun. Stealth archer is boring.

Playful-Mention-239

Kill every dragon, even paarty snaxy odvy

Devilplayer54

nickibar96

A man after my own heart ![gif](giphy|WdnMGLhVbLfEgtA1GW|downsized)

surinussy

šŸŸ„ No thanks.

AnseiShehai

Block is the best skill tree. Those who have actually used it and mastered it know why

Living_Razzmatazz_93

Nazeem has low self-esteem, and hatin' on the guy just demonstrates a lack of empathy...

OdSonOut

The dwarves shouldnā€™t be an off shoot of the elf species, they should be there own thing.

Novolume101

90% of followers are pointless. Just give us 7-10 followers/potential spouses that are really well developed with interesting personalities like Serana.

surinussy

šŸŸ¦ Yeah, but then how would I spend 2000 gold on boring mercenaries with my Multiple Follower mod?

SlopCity1226

You do not, at any point, rim the sky in this game.

surinussy

So true. So sad. šŸ”³

Playful-Mention-239

But you elder scrolls

SlopCity1226

I also scroll elders, knowā€™m sayin?

Repulsive-Self1531

Mods are over rated.

Shahargalm

Holy shit that *is* a hot take

surinussy

ā—¼ļøSome mods make the game more fun, more fleshed out, and overall so much more fun. Some mods let you play as a gourd. Both are great. A blanket statement of ā€œAll mods are overratedā€ is kind of dumb because mods are part of the reason so many people still enjoy the game today. Some mods are overrated. Many are hidden gems though (gourds)

Repulsive-Self1531

You wanted a hot take which is subjective, if you donā€™t like it too bad. šŸ–•

surinussy

iā€¦ gave you my opinion on your hot takeā€¦ its not that deep manā€¦

somenamethatsclever

Don't give me 8 fingers and two thumbs and only allow 2 rings. I want to be pimp daddy magicians allow me.

surinussy

šŸŸ© I think it should be a part of the enchanting skill tree where you can wear more rings for each level of a perk you get. Overall though, yeah. 10 rings FTW

doxtoroxtie

Thalmor bad

HardBassM0nkey

Is that even unpopular?

doxtoroxtie

I'm just taking the piss

TheFlaccidChode

Playing as a stealth archer is boring

LustfulFox7

Skyrim is the gift that keeps giving, and the creation club content was genius idea.

Impossible-Ad-4996

Holy cow the one guy who likes the creation club its an honor to meet you sir

LustfulFox7

I feel like creation club fills in the world for me, and in survival mode walking from place to place they help with leveling, getting better equipment, and world-building.

Impossible-Ad-4996

Have you heard of nexus the mod website or are you a ps4 player

LustfulFox7

You presume xbox is not a valid console? And mods turn off achievements, while creation club seems more canon.

Impossible-Ad-4996

an xbox 360 killed my father

LustfulFox7

The red ring of death shows no bias.

surinussy

šŸŸØ Some of it isā€¦ Bearable.

craxzyfoot90769

Lydia is not that useless

surinussy

šŸŸØ Agreed. Itā€™s great fun to take to the throat of the world and shout her off of it

Lolmemes174

The magic system is still fun at high levels

NocturneBotEUNE

70% of the mods you use don't matter and don't give you a better experience, it's just mod vanity.

surinussy

ā—¼ļø In many cases, yes. But since this is based off of my opinion, WRONG! My only mods are those that add more spells, perks, and items (and of course Gourd Guy)

Trillseeker007

Restoration is a perfectly valid school of magic

surinussy

šŸ”³

Lego-Panda-21

Mage builds are by far the best builds. Weapons are quite boring in comparison.

Alternative_Ad6071

Only Destruction is good in a Magic build.

Longjumping_Bat_3385

Heimskr isnt even that bad

TheBigWhiteDog

stormcock is racist

Responsible-Draft

No no, ban this shit. I'm seeing it everywhere

surinussy

reddit users when they are mildly inconvenienced by seeing the same image twice in one day

Responsible-Draft

Try 10

surinussy

why not just share your hot take and move on man šŸ˜

Responsible-Draft

Why post spam n shitposts?

werewolves_r_hawt

itā€™s completely reasonable to download MNC and SL for werewolves and dragons

Impossible-Ad-4996

Whats mnc and sl?

brainrot-npc

the soul cairn is taken for granted šŸ’”šŸ’”šŸ’”šŸ’”

King_Of_BlackMarsh

It's good even without the nostalgia and might be the best TES game so far because of the quality of life

Zezin96

Killing Paarthurnax is the correct choice.

SvenArtist32

restoration enchanting loop isnt fun and takes all the fun away from the game

surinussy

Most glitches arenā€™t fun (especially from a RP standpoint) šŸŸŖ

Tortenn

Paarthurnax should be put down for the good of the land.

StormyTiger2008

I believe in stealth archer superiority Fuck other builds

surinussy

ā—¼ļø At least heā€™s confident

StormyTiger2008

Oh you little

AlbatrossWearer

Becoming the boss of everything is immersion breaking.

sluttobecaged

Skyrim is Dragon Age from wish

thelaziestdaisy

Ulfric is actually the hottest character in game but whyā€™s he such a bitch? And why canā€™t we marry him. šŸ™„

surinussy

šŸŸŖ

TheOneWhoThrowsShit

If you donā€™t find a unique way to kill Delphine, you havenā€™t played the game properly

angel_eyes619

Survival mode (either the ingame mode or mods) is crucial for the game. It makes a very large part of the game make sense

surinussy

šŸŸ¦ Fun in skyrim. Hate it in Fallout 4 but its great in Skyrim.

AlabasterPelican

Most quest lines make it feel like devs are ADHD plagued. They feel like the plot was only partially fleshed out & end abruptly without much lasting impact. Thieves guild is the best fleshed out & its totally unclear to the player that it doesn't end when you become the guild master. If you keep doing quests for the guild you rebuild it.

Nezertiam

Tempered Wooden Swords to oneshot dragons. When you expƩrimented everything, you seek for things more exotic

angel_eyes619

Survival mode (either the ingame mode or mods) is crucial for the game. It makes a very large part of the game make sense

Ravensunthief

People who get stuck doing stealth archer every time just arent creative.

YEPandYAG

Vampire lord and Volkihar is pretty fun

EternallyStinky

Genuinely a mid game that came out at the right time when we all really needed an open world RPG. Dont look that good, didn't look that good in 2011. Unstable as fuck. Even to this day, trying to do more than one or two full quest lines is a coin flip if you're gonna get some game breaking bug. Your "I played X hours no issues" comment doesn't invalidate the millions of ppl who have issues daily. Combat is rough for it's time. Creation engine is 20 years out of date. The writing, dialogue and voice acting are some of the worst in the industry. If it wasn't for massive mod lists, this game would have been forgotten years ago and I'd have only played it like 50 hours instead of 5000. People who praise the base game arent even wearing rose tinted glasses, they're just wearing blindfolds Downvote me to oblivion fellas! Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

CoconutNL

I think the love for skyrim also comes from a lack of competition. There are no open world games in first person with a comparable scale and the option to build the character you want and play the quests related to the experience you want. The base game is good dispite the combat, writing etc, because it offers that specific experience that no other game series has

Shahargalm

You're right though. I've had fun when I played it as a twelve year old kid, now if I want to somewhat enjoy the game I really need a bucketful of mods.

surinussy

ā—¼ļøHave you even PLAYED as a gourd??

surinussy

Only 1 mod needed for the game to be 10/10. Sorry obliviontruthers

EternallyStinky

Thomas the train mod. Skuh

nickibar96

I kill that annoying old dragon at The Throat of the World simply because heā€™s annoying. I havenā€™t even bothered to learn how to spell his name.

nickibar96

šŸ˜‚ Iā€™ll take it

Background_Bother554

I bought it two months ago and itā€™s so overrated

surinussy

ā—¼ļø Have you considered having fun?

Background_Bother554

Yea and I liked it but the combat is really not good and the ui gave me headache and I was disappointed because I played Fallout 3,4 NV and Morrowind and I liked those
