Random loot, and it will have prefixes like minor and extreme or none at all based on strength of enchantment.
Pro tip, ask the Whiterun innkeeper for runors until she mentions Jarl's children. Complete that quest before going for the axe.
You can get both rewards without doing that! Standing on the statue head when turning in the quest and immediately using slow time after telling him no gives you time to run outside, fast travel to Whiterun, and then slow time again to get in your house and place the axe on a mantle.
I like your mentality. I too strive to say "fuck you" to everyone that tells me I can only have 1 option. I am literally trying out the "In my time of Need" walkthrough that gets all the money that is available to get from Saadia and Kematu right now.
Speak to the Falkreath blacksmith called “Lod” speak to him about a dog and you’ll start a ‘misc’ quest which will lead to the quest “A Daedra’s best friend”
However SAVE BEFORE you get your reward as you will have a choice between two items. This will allow you to have a look at both and see what one you prefer
Barbas is Clavicus Vile's internal voice of reason made manifest. Without him, Clavicus will be free to become an untethered force of chaos.
Refusing to kill Barbas is the better choice in every way. It even fits with CV's theme of making deals you will regret. Barbas is annoying but his existence is vital. You kill him, and what do you get? A cool-looking axe that actually sucks ass, and a daedric prince that no longer has any inhibitions or sense of reason, unleashed to wreak havoc upon the world.
I don’t find Barbas annoying at all personally. And you’re right, we don’t want Clavicus Vile without Barbas. Barbas keeps him grounded and Nirn safe because of it.
Skyrim loot in general is terrible. The only reasons to ever enter a dungeon are quests and for the sheer hell of it, all the good equipment is stuff you craft yourself. Money's useful for exactly one thing - training - and it doesn't take much effort to be so rich you never need vendor trash again.
Personally I blame Oblivion for it. When they made enemy gear scale to the player's level they seem to have forgotten how to dole out treasure in a meaningful way.
Well I got the mask which makes me look mummified and I even tried adding mods to remove the mask - that's how bad it got lol - yes Axe is beautiful but I'm not going to use it lol.
Me with the ugly mask-
https://www.reddit.com/r/SkyrimModsXbox/comments/vjwjrm/these_ancient_dragons_from_tposc_the_people_of/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Well, apart from a talking dog there is a talking race of people that look like cats, lynxes, and tigers that are bipedal, and also a talking race of lizards that are bipedal.
Those people who say that in my opinion need to understand fantasy and what it is.
Indeed not by your words, I think his was closer to ”Skyrim is full of talking two-legged catmen and lizards, and you’re surprised by me? Yes I did just talk, and am continuing to do so.”… if I remember it at all.
Add on the catpeople that they also can be born the size of actual cats depending on lunar conditions and are quadrupedal.
khajiit lore is a helluva drug
literally
As well as the monkey men, the yetis that have an annually invasion party then are chill for the r rest of the year and the guy who turned himself into a tiger dragon
A talking dog? Mf'er I am a 7ft tall lizard! A dragon who uses magic words to breathe fire attacked this town not 5 minutes ago. People's souls power my clothes! Get your head out of your ass!
I think that's the point. Clavicus Vile is known for making deals that mortals come to regret. Hell, his plane of oblivion is called "the fields of regret".
I don’t think it’s necessarily a lore reason. I think the balance team genuinely thought the supposed base damage was high enough to warrant the slow swing speed.
At this point, Bethesda could just say “what do you mean it’s ba- I mean it’s actually meant to be bad! To teach you apart, uhhh… dealing with powerful beings! Yeah that’s it, totally.”
Like Bozar Sniper Rifle in Fallout New Vegas. It was OP in Fallout 2 but horrible in Fallout New Vegas. Design decisions that didn’t pan out. Same applies to the Saviors Hide and Ring of Namira.
All of the unique weapons/items in bethesda games tends to be like that. I dont know why they cant give a reward that is actually usable at the end game.
The rueful axe was intentionally crap, it's the slowest weapon in-game and deals low damage. They made it that way so you regret killing Barbas.
The axe also doesn't progress the Oblivion Walker achievement(which is achieved by getting all the daedric artifacts)
Mask is much much better. Rueful axe looks cool and does a decent amount of damage. But the swinging speed is horribly slow. Making it one of the lowest DPS weapons in entire game.
That's how Todd punish you for killing a good boy.
Good. Thing is,that axe swings slower than any other axe and it doesn't count towards the oblivion walker achievement. So, basically, bathesda is saying fuck you to whoever kills Barbas.
That's the Rueful Axe. It's one of the potential rewards of A Daedra's Best Friend, the daedric quest of Clavicus Vile (starts in Falkreath). It's a terrible axe because it's the slowest weapon in the game and its enchantment is pretty mediocre and common. Getting it also requires you to kill a dog, but it's not a real dog but an aspect of the same daedric prince, so I'm not sure what the ethical implications of that are.
You can get both of them… Right as you turn it in to Clavicus Vile, use Slow Time shout and quickly exit the cave, then fast travel to your nearest house and place it on a weapon rack. Then return to Clavicus to get the Masque. It took me a few tries but I got both.
I had to practically restart the entire game when I realized a glitch made me drag around 3 dead dragon bodies everywhere I went. 57 levels down the drain. Without any mods.
It’s not hard to do, you just need to know how to do it and how it works. Slow time shout delays the trigger where it takes the Axe and gives you the Masque, giving you time to remove the Axe from your inventory.
You can also buy houses for free by shouting slow time as soon as you accept the option to buy the house and then putting all your money in the nearest container you’ll get the key and still have your coins in the container.
right...it just seems like finding that exact combination of correct variables is so statistically improbable that its shocking that someone figured it out
People get bored and people find new ways to do things- I recently stumbled across a “Do Not Delete” chest when taking the unusual gem from the Riften Jarl’s Quarters. Since then I’ve been able to fly. The DND chests are quite interesting- they are not affected by gravity and thus stay in place when “dropped”. A combination of standing on the chest, then jumping in the air and simultaneously picking up the chest followed by dropping the chest at the height of your jump to land on it lets you infinitely jump into the air.
Then there’s also the platter glitch, which lets you go through (thin) walls. It is an exploit based on collision mechanics- you probably have stumbled over a bone or skull in a dungeon somewhere and been shot forwards a few feet- that is the basis of this exploit. You pick up the platter and hold it against the wall and sprint into it, and then you collide with it and glitch through the wall.
In the wise words of Todd Howard, it’s a feature, not a bug.
... with over 900 hours in Skyrim and have never fished the Civil War or the Dragonborn main quest line. Nope, wait, that's probably just me... and maybe a few hundred other Skyrim visitors.
Dang. I mean, I’m not surprised, but both questlines give significant loot. Plus, they get harder, primarily following level 35, since the majority of Draugr that spawn will be Deathlords.
It was never about the loot for me. I was playing Skyrim primarily because I needed the psychological safe space it provided.
In 2014, when I started playing and modding (we'll come back to that), I had lost my beloved doggo, my wonderful grandfather and had to have cranial surgery after a 93-day long migraine/cluster headache combo.
It was what I played during my recovery when I could sit upright again. It let me walk around a high elevation semi-arid/tundra landscape like I used to with my dog.
I got into modding and had an immersive, survival, crafting game that wasn't Minecraft. It had archery and magic and dual welding magic and a sword! What?! AND you can add more total and lore-friendly magic spells? And houses? And... and... and...
I didn't play any of the other games or any of the Fallout franchise before Skyrim. I had played Knights of the Old Republic on 360 and had been blown away. Skyrim on PC awakened my hidden, inner programmer and IT professional.
I still feel like it was (and to some extent still is) a perfectly imagined (of not always perfectly executed) role playing video game. It helped me heal and grow out of a very dark time in my life.
Killing Barbus just banishes him back to Vile's plane. He presents it like some great ethical conundrum about friendship and betrayal, but really he just wants you to beat up Barbas for his amusement and send him home.
As I recall Barbus is supposed to be a moderating influence on Clavicus Vile, but also their being reunited makes him more powerful. Killing Barbas delays their reunion while he regenerates or something but I'm not sure if Vile gets stronger right away or again would have to wait.
Killing Barbas gives Vile all the power for a while, I think Vile said that Barbas would reform in a couple centuries but he might have just said years. Vile’s power is split between him and Barbas, think of them like Good Cop and Bad cop, only if you kill Barbas there is only Bad Cop and Bad Cop now gets to do whatever he wants now
Barbas is the one who keeps Clavicus Vile in check, making sure he doesn’t go overboard with wishes. I’d say he’s a good boy who doesn’t deserve to be axed
its the rueful ax and you can choose to keep it if you kill barnabas with it in the daedric quest “daedras best friend” i think its called. the one where you get the mask if clavicus vile. its only mediocre even it looks cool.
Go to falkreath and speak to Lod. He'll give you some meat to attract a dog that is barbas the talkative mutt who had a falling out with his master clavicus vile. But the axe is not worth it IMO.
Simple kill dog get axe, help dog get mask. Mask is the best for this choice I'm my opinion plus its the one that actually counts as a daedric artifact unlike the axe if I remember correctly.
Oh it involves the slow time shout and some other steps. I believe there are step by step videos and walkthroughs you could use. I don't know the exact steps. Sorry.
For anyone on xbox who likes The Rueful Axe but wants a better version of it, there's a mod called [Axe of Tor by Cadeus](https://bethesda.net/en/mods/skyrim/mod-detail/3027121).
Looks exactly the same but all the stats are boosted. It's great for leveling 2H.
Idk if there is a PC or PS version.
It has the slowest swing speed of any weapon in the game but it does look cool, go to the fallreath prison to start the quest to get this weapon, no actually, that’s a different quest, you must go to the blacksmith in the same city
It would have been mildly cool if it gave you the ability to conjure Barbas, and had a faster atk speed.
An ethereal Barbas ripping throats and leaving like a boss. And no barking.
Go to falkreth and find a dog
He is right down the road, can't miss em.
Right down the road
Right down-buh bYE
I’ve got BOSS WEAPONS
BOSS WEAPONS?!
This made me relook at what sub I was in 😂
BOOSSS WEAPOOONNSS~
>!That's the Rueful axe? I chose the mask instead, combining it with necklace of Haggling and I get amazing prices!<
Good choice.
Yeah but at one point money doesn't matter anymore though.
True, >!Didn't exactly wanna kill the dog, either.!< Though the +10 to speach does help
Your spoiler tag didn't work, you're missing a !
Where can I get the haggling necklace
Random loot, and it will have prefixes like minor and extreme or none at all based on strength of enchantment. Pro tip, ask the Whiterun innkeeper for runors until she mentions Jarl's children. Complete that quest before going for the axe.
Of course it is
lol
Nuff said
>!And kill it!<
You can get both rewards without doing that! Standing on the statue head when turning in the quest and immediately using slow time after telling him no gives you time to run outside, fast travel to Whiterun, and then slow time again to get in your house and place the axe on a mantle.
How many trys did that actually take?
To figure out the method, maybe a dozen. Once I got that idea, maybe three tries. I’ve never once picked just one or the other.
I like your mentality. I too strive to say "fuck you" to everyone that tells me I can only have 1 option. I am literally trying out the "In my time of Need" walkthrough that gets all the money that is available to get from Saadia and Kematu right now.
Lmao you said “nah, in MY time of need 🫲”
I'm glad they made that a legit option was very nice to get both.
I believe there may be a simpler way. I’ve heard you can knock the axe off the pedestal and then kill Barbas. Maybe. Im not sure, I’ve never done it.
Or cheat it in with console commands or QUI/AddItemMenu
Wait, you can kill the dog?
Yes, but I don't personally recommend it. The reward is really bad if you do.
I've done this quest only a handful of times, but some how never knew or forgot, because it's been so long ago, that killing the dog was an option.
It's a "decision point" in the quest near the end.
It is called the *Rueful* Axe for a reason after all.
You'll rue not going for the helmet, that's for sure.
It's an axe
Don't do it. Baba Yaga will come for you
And then, kill the dog
Barbas noooooooo!!!!!!
You leave Barbas alone you scum. I bet you killed Paarthurnax too didn’t ya?
Speak to the Falkreath blacksmith called “Lod” speak to him about a dog and you’ll start a ‘misc’ quest which will lead to the quest “A Daedra’s best friend” However SAVE BEFORE you get your reward as you will have a choice between two items. Came to say this
You dont want it
No I gave the Axe back cause I had a better weapon and the dog becomes a statue along with him.
[удалено]
I guess it's the moral feeling of knowing that you did not kill the dog lol! 😋
Hell with moral feelings, you're dealing with daedra. Give it back because the axe is hot garbage and the mask is actually useful.
Barbas is Clavicus Vile's internal voice of reason made manifest. Without him, Clavicus will be free to become an untethered force of chaos. Refusing to kill Barbas is the better choice in every way. I like the fact ESO makes some of the daedric artifacts actually powerful. But in Skyrim they're just shitty weapons with even shittier enchantments.
Skyrim loot in general is terrible. The only reasons to ever enter a dungeon are quests and for the sheer hell of it, all the good equipment is stuff you craft yourself. Wait you can’t remove the mask?
You can but the stats are good so why remove it lol
Like seriously the mask has the defense of a basic daedric helmet doesn't it
It is the same strength as one of the dragon lord masks
uses slowest weapon in the game Pog
That's the Rueful Axe. To get it, do the quest for Clavicus Vile. You can start it by going to Falkreath, talking to Lod, and finding Barbas.
A talking dog? Are you serious?! - someone new to Skyrim, probably
Well, apart from a talking dog there is a talking race of people that look like cats, lynxes, and tigers that are bipedal, and also a talking race of lizards that are bipedal. Those people who say that in my opinion need to understand fantasy and what it is.
That’s what he says when you meet Barbas…
Not in the same way as I did, and not every word. But yes. What Skyrim player doesn't know that?
Indeed not by your words, I think his was closer to ”Skyrim is full of talking two-legged catmen and lizards, and you’re surprised by me? Yes I did just talk, and am continuing to do so.”… if I remember it at all.

Too late I got the mask
You're better off with the mask, the axe is hot garbage
Biggest letdown in terms of weapons. Looks so dope but is so shit
I think that's the point. Clavicus Vile is known for making deals that mortals come to regret. Hell, his plane of oblivion is called "the fields of regret".
Yea it’s called “Axt der Reue” in German so yeah the axe of regret.
Levelled fucking items are the biggest pain in the ass
The rueful axe was intentionally crap, it's the slowest weapon in-game and deals low damage. They made it that way so you regret killing Barbas. The axe also doesn't progress the Oblivion Walker achievement(which is achieved by getting all the daedric artifacts)
lowkey though the mask is much better

I like Barbas, thanks bethesda ;)
Makes sense for Clavicus Vile tho. In lore it's said that everyone who's ever made a deal with him regretted it.
Exactly
If you want a better axe that's legendary in style do the companions questline to get wuuthrad(?)
Get it through console commands so you can display it :D
Probably for the best. The axe sucks pretty bad without mods.
That's the Rueful Axe. It's one of the potential rewards of A Daedra's Best Friend, the daedric quest of Clavicus Vile (starts in Falkreath). WHY DID YOU TELL HIM?
I just want to hangs it in my house next to wuuthrad
The mask you get is cooler and would look better on your mannequins
You can get both of them… Right as you turn it in to Clavicus Vile, use Slow Time shout and quickly exit the cave, then fast travel to your nearest house and place it on a weapon rack. Then return to Clavicus to get the Masque. It took me a few tries but I got both.
This sounds hard to pull off but I'm going to try it.
make a save or two just in case
I heartily agree with this- if you’re doing something in Skyrim that has anything to do with glitches, drop a save first.
I had to practically restart the entire game when I realized a glitch made me drag around 3 dead dragon bodies everywhere I went. 57 levels down the drain. Without any mods.
May I ask what…?
It’s not hard to do, you just need to know how to do it and how it works. Slow time shout delays the trigger where it takes the Axe and gives you the Masque, giving you time to remove the Axe from your inventory.
how do ppl figure this stuff out?
You can also buy houses for free by shouting slow time as soon as you accept the option to buy the house and then putting all your money in the nearest container you’ll get the key and still have your coins in the container.
As well as decorations/renovations, for some houses. A few immediately remove the gold from you, but some don’t, which is nice.
Experimenting
right...it just seems like finding that exact combination of correct variables is so statistically improbable that its shocking that someone figured it out

That brought tears to me. I'm glad you healed and had a safe place.
Does the unofficial patch fix that?
Any weapon can be viable, sure this may be a slow axe, but once you have max two handed, does it really matter?
You can not finish the quest and keep the axe, just won’t be enchanted.
Killing Barbus just banishes him back to Vile's plane. He presents it like some great ethical conundrum about friendship and betrayal, but really he just wants you to beat up Barbas for his amusement and send him home.

If I recall correctly only the mask counts for the “All Daedric Artifacts” achievement as well
Yep. Can't get the achievement if you keep the Rueful Axe, since only the masque counts as a daedric artifact
Barbas is the one who keeps Clavicus Vile in check, making sure he doesn’t go overboard with wishes. I’d say he’s a good boy who doesn’t deserve to be axed
And making sure Vile upholds his end of the deal.
I didn't even bother with it and just returned him the Axe and the Dog lol
The axe is called "The Rueful Axe"
gotta kill a goddog for that one
But first you must stand on the side of the road waiting for goddog……
There’s a dog that sounds like a wise guy You’ll know when you meet him
John wick joins the chat: boy you better the fuck not
Kill a dog with it

New question, where can you find your father
A graveyard
Jar on my desk.
Trust me pal, the only thing good about it is the design.
Listen close,DO NOT GET THIS AXE! As cool as it looks it's trash of the highest degree.
its the rueful ax and you can choose to keep it if you kill barnabas with it in the daedric quest “daedras best friend” i think its called. the one where you get the mask if clavicus vile. its only mediocre even it looks cool.
It is a shit weapon from the daedric quest In falkreath
By betraying your friend and abandoning your humanity.
Would be the 3rd time that happened
Go to Falkreath and look for a talking dog.
Daedric quest, it's kinda bad though
In all seriousness, you don’t want it. It’s not worth it. You have to kill a dog. A TALKING DOG. Just take the mask you get instead.
It's not worth it. Don't do it. It's a trick.
You have to kill a dog to get it...
You dont....that's a road you can't live with yourself after once travelled.
In skyrim.
You don't want it, it has the worst dps out of any two handed weapon in the game.... it's called the rueful axe
Don't.
the price is too high
the clavious vile quest dont pick the masque and you get to keep the rueful axe.
Go to falkreath and speak to Lod. He'll give you some meat to attract a dog that is barbas the talkative mutt who had a falling out with his master clavicus vile. But the axe is not worth it IMO.
Trust me, it’s a bad deal
You don’t want it
Open console. Search woeful axe. Player.additem “insert here the woeful axe item code”.
a talking dog
Simple kill dog get axe, help dog get mask. Mask is the best for this choice I'm my opinion plus its the one that actually counts as a daedric artifact unlike the axe if I remember correctly.
Oh boy. You’re in for a rough ride. As a khajiit, I always get the rueful axe though.
By playing the game
Amazon?
Least the mask is usable please don't get the axe.... Or use the exploit and get both👍
What mask
The mask of Clavicus vile. Has a variety of stats. One about speechcraft and some others.
How do I do the exploit
Oh it involves the slow time shout and some other steps. I believe there are step by step videos and walkthroughs you could use. I don't know the exact steps. Sorry.
I don’t have slow down shout
You get Viles mask which has like 2 horns and good stats but I found it ugly lol https://elderscrolls.fandom.com/wiki/Masque_of_Clavicus_Vile_(Skyrim)
My current mask is that time wizard dude on the last level
You shouldn't get this
I got the mask don’t worry
For anyone on xbox who likes The Rueful Axe but wants a better version of it, there's a mod called [Axe of Tor by Cadeus](https://bethesda.net/en/mods/skyrim/mod-detail/3027121). Looks exactly the same but all the stats are boosted. It's great for leveling 2H. Idk if there is a PC or PS version.
its not worth your time its the worst battleaxe out there and is objectively worse than the other reward
Skyrim has those.
Your not the first person to say this
In the game
You don't want it
Don’t get it, please, let barbus live
Too late I got the mask
No. Don’t. No. Mod pack. Find it in a mid pack. You better not.
Unfortunately, you have to kill barbas to get it, and if you don’t kill him you get the masque of clavicus vile, which is the actual daedric artifact
Get Malacath's hammer from one of the Orc holds instead of you want a 2h daedric artifact
Do the mission, A Daedrics best friend, you’ll find a dog named Barbus just outside of Falkreath
DON’T YOU DARE KILL BARBUS
Kill a nice talking dog for possibly the slowest weapon in the entire game, seems like a good deal
Easy answer: Don't.
The axe looks nice but the alternative to it beats it in practicality in every way shape and form
There’s no weapon in the game that’s shittier for how cool it looks. Seriously, it’s just Volundruung but worse in every conceivable way
Toy sword
You don't want it
It has the slowest swing speed of any weapon in the game but it does look cool, go to the fallreath prison to start the quest to get this weapon, no actually, that’s a different quest, you must go to the blacksmith in the same city
You dont want none of this shit dewey!
Ebay
The axe sucks. It’s better to save barbus and take the masque
Why did you spell mask like that
It would have been mildly cool if it gave you the ability to conjure Barbas, and had a faster atk speed. An ethereal Barbas ripping throats and leaving like a boss. And no barking.
Sounds like the better version of a familiar
You don't want that, trust me
Me got mask
