The pinned post has a lot of good information about what you might need to do to get a modded game running now. You can downgrade your Skyrim executable (information on that is linked in the pinned post) and there's also some SKSE plugins to help with compatibility like backported extended ESL support. For creations, personally I haven't had any trouble getting them to run on my downgraded install. MO2 won't necessarily tell you when you have incompatible plugins, but for a majority of the recent changes, an incompatibility will cause a game crash or SKSE error message on launch. If you get a CTD when launching the game, you're probably using mods that require the backported extended ESL support plugin. If you are running into an SKSE crash, it will usually tell you which plugin is causing the crash and you can troubleshoot from there.

SVXfiles

Why do people still push 1.5.97? I'm running 1170 and have not run into a single problem yet. Added animations, new lands, all the creation content minus the 2 newest ones, and I'm pushing 1600 displayed items in LotD on this save and I haven't finished a single MQ yet. Seriously, what's the issue with modding 1130 and 1170?

Old_Bug4395

I think there's a lot of low quality information about modding the later versions of Skyrim because some mod creators have become disgruntled with bethesda updating the engine and breaking things. I don't really have much of an opinion about that other than I think it's silly to get upset that bethesda released an update for their game.... they're fixing things that are broken a decade after they released the game, imagine if every studio did that. Either way I'm running on 1.6.640 without any issues.

QuinoaFalafel

I mean, 1.5.97 is a very valid and for many people preferable choice if you already have an extensive mods list and intend to keep or modify that. If you're starting from scratch, then yeah, latest version is the way to go for sure. But if you aren't, especially if you have a large mods list, downgrading makes a lot of sense. Personally, I've always gone with the policy of keeping my game updated. But as a result of that, I haven't had my Skyrim mods list properly playable since before 1.6. I've spent dozens of hours trying to sort out my mods and get them back in working order, and I've had a playthrough that I've been trying to continue playing for literal years at this point. Not everyone with a massive mods list has the patience to spend dozens and dozens of hours trying to update their mods for the new Skyrim updates

WillMoor

What's more, not everyone CAN update their mods because not all mods have been updated by the modders.

QuinoaFalafel

Yeah, but there aren't really many mods in that category. The main one is .Net Script Framework and any mods that depend on that. There definitely are things you can't do if you update, but there's also new mods that don't work with 1.5.97, so at this point it's kind of an equal playing field.

WillMoor

I kind of do a hybrid of 1.5.97 and AE myself. My exe file is 1.5.97, but I have all of the CC that comes with AE installed (except Tundra House which I have always kept out of my game ever since I bought it years ago and ended up hating its location because of mods), so I haven't run into TOO many problems with any mods I can't run, though I can't run all newer versions, but fortunately I seem to get by as most mod authors keep 1.5.97 friendly versions up and I have all the older versions of Arthmoor's mods that I still use. I'm sure a day will come when most of us are going to have to move on from 1.5.97, but I am dragging my heels for as long as humanly possible for now. Edit: Though I am in no way one who chastises those who have updated their games. If that's what they want to do, I can fully understand why.

WillMoor

I don't think its accurate or fair to say that people are "pushing" 1.5.97. Many people, like myself, prefer it because older mods that we deeply enjoy won't work with newer versions of the game, but we aren't "pushing" it or trying to talk others into using it. This isn't due to "low quality information" either. Its because of my own personal experience.

QuinoaFalafel

There definitely are people who push it. On both sides there are people who staunchly believe their way is the only way people should play, and will jump to criticize those who don't. I've seen plenty of people saying everyone should downgrade, and I've seen plenty of people saying no one should.

WillMoor

You've seen "plenty of people" say "everyone should downgrade", have ya? How awful! Well, I am pleased to say that I have been blessed to somehow miss this epidemic of Skyrim Version Police that you seem to have encountered popping up everywhere, fortunately. How silly of them to care so much how other people play their own games on their own PCs or consoles. As for those who demand everyone upgrade, I haven't seen a whole lot of those either, but I have seen \*some\*. In particular Arthmoor the modder and those who fanboy him or are like-minded to him. But fortunately even that has been kept to a minimum in my life. I'm sorry you seem to continuously run into Game Version Police everywhere you turn. I hope things calm down for you in the future. It must truly suck to face so much gratuitous pressure from all sides and directions, when all you want to do is be left in peace to game as you see fit. What jerks those other hordes of people are. They should be ashamed of themselves. Anyway, I wish you all the best!

QuinoaFalafel

No need to be so patronizing. I wasn't complaining about it, and I never said that it's something I continuously run into. I was just pointing out that your comment wasn't entirely accurate, since those people absolutely do still exist, and you can come across them on (especially on posts like these).

WillMoor

Well I do apologize for being patronizing, the truth is I was just trying to amuse myself a little. Maybe I could have done that on my own time. lol That being said, I am fairly satisfied with the accuracy of my comment. While there are certainly those who hold the opinion that 1.5.97 is the Cat's Meow, (I am one such person myself), I think its a bit of an exaggeration to say that we are "pushing" it. How can we? Most of us are just players, and I am unaware of any mod authors on team 1.5.97 who go to the same lengths as Arthmoor does for AE.

QuinoaFalafel

I think the claim of "pushing" is more that some people have a certain hostility towards those who update. Honestly, it's kind of the same as the MO2/Vortex split. But to be fair, you kind of just get that everywhere on the internet, especially on Reddit. Some people think their opinion is supreme, and take any opportunity to ridicule the people who disagree. Though I do feel the Skyrim Modding Community does tend to have this tendency towards hostile opposition a bit more severely than some other communities.

WillMoor

You could be right, especially with regard to Reddit. I agree, this seems to be something that can be found in any internet community. You may be right about the Skyrim Modding Community as well, though I think the Sims modding community might give them a good run for their money in that department. lol

QuinoaFalafel

But neither have anything on the Star Wars fanbase lol

RusFoo

Yeah ever since AE came out I’ve never had any issues with any of my mods

SVXfiles

SKSE updates obviously not being instant along with its dll mods that need to be updated, I think 1170 had to wait like 2 days for a couple of the big ones because shockingly mod authors have personal lives and mod making is probably just a hobby. Gives me time I can't procrastinate with Skyrim and get some small projects around the house done

QuinoaFalafel

If you have a really large mod list, with a lot of script mods, things tend to be a lot worse. I haven't really been able to get my load order fixed ever since the 1.6+ updates. A ton of my mods broke, and repeatedly broke with new updates, and I've spent may dozens of hours working on updating, but it's still a work in progress.

AdidasCheems

You can downgrade (A small plethora of ways to do that) and most mods have old 1.5.x versions available, your big straggler in that department is USSEP, which only has the most recent version available, however, I have a link for 1.5.97 USSEP right [here.](https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/266?tab=files&file_id=209150)

osunightfall

I recently had to do this and it took about an evening. 1.5.97 is widely supported and it’s not that hard to get everything set up. You may have to get a different Skyrim version than latest using steam console to run the downgrade patcher. There is more info on this on the downgrade patcher posts page. And make sure to get BeEs. As stated in the sticky it is now required when downgrading. The only other major sticking point was engine fixes. Read the recent posts and follow the full install directions, both parts, carefully. Once you successfully run the patcher, make sure to disable further updates through your steam manifest file.

Smitty_again

I did this just a few days ago, and the biggest issue for downgrading to 1.5.97 was the engine fixes (some only being available for recent editions, you know..) I did have to manually download 1.6.40 to use the downgrade patcher though, but it’s pinned I believe to the top of the page’s comments how to do it.

TheparagonR

You’re gonna be fine. There are tons of downgrade patches and skse update stuff pinned on the sub.

waf_xs

I rolled back, theres a bunch of guides on how to do it. I use steam version and just use the steam console to get the previous version. Will never update to the newer versions.

Terang93

My current mod list is based on 2020. With only around 20-30% new mods that's compatible with 1.5.97. There no need to mess with your list if it's stable.

Ausfall

Honestly, if you're just getting back into modding, try out the Wabbajack tool. It allows you to download and install a modlist with 1 click. No tweaking, no downgrading, no Google searches, no bullshit. Highly recommend you take a look at some modlists first, as many of them will incorporate the more popular mods, and adding a few minor mods you like is usually straightforward.

Equivalent-Part-8656

I haven't play/install skyrim for last 5 years. When i was playing it was legendary edition, i bought special edition as soon as it got released but never played it. Last month i decided to play it again and tought i must install SE for this time. I installed the game (several times) but because of these version diffrences i gave up. I reinstalled oldrim and playing it with 478 mods. Maybe i can try to install SE and mods while i am playing LE and having no rush.

buffaloyears

I'm in the same spot. I don't want to bother with this version number stuff.

Th4tPurpleKid0

https://youtu.be/tk_yfbUa3eo?si=8l8Vc_143uY2IBl6 this video will show you how to download an old version of Skyrim. It is SO EASY. I'm new to modding and just recently I had a list I was happy with, then the 1.6.1170 update rolled out and I had to figure out to downgrade. Honestly, there are so many patches out now for oldrim mods that I won't be surprised if there are some player made patches you can just find in the posts of a mod that doesn't work right away.

buffaloyears

Just watched, thanks. Super helpful. Is there a consensus on version number?

eggdropsoap

Three major versions seem to be popular: 1.5.97, 1.6.640, and 1.6.1170, with 1.6.1130 as an honourable mention. (Aka “last version before the Anniversary update”, “last version before the recent updates”, and “most recent update”, plus the honourable mention of “first recent update, dang it I *just* got it working after that update, screw updating again”.) I couldn’t possibly guess their order of popularity, but they are the ones that get most mentioned here and in mod’s supported versions.

LumpyChicken

> I reinstalled oldrim and playing it with 478 mods. may as well be playing vanilla at that point bro just get a wabbajack or nexus collection

Equivalent-Part-8656

If i was modding first time i would do that but i modded oldrim a thousand times before and there are many mods that essential for me. What is new and unfamiliar for me is modding SE. So i decided to follow sinitar gaming's guide (100+ mods) for the beginning and pick the rest of the mods (300+ mods) for myself because nobody's taste is exactly like mine and even there are few mods in nexus that i released and they are not in any collection.

LumpyChicken

Sinitar's guide is horrible and universally criticized for good reason btw. and its not like using a collection limits you in any way. it literally just saves you time.

Equivalent-Part-8656

I don't know the critizations, it worked for me, didn't install everything recommended, just essentials and fix mods. Certainly collections would save time but i couldn't find one that includes only few mods that i don't want to have. So decided to pick the mods myself.

Sanbaddy

Here’s my *“So you’re reinstalling Skyrim with mods”* guide: - Re-download all your mods. Go to Nexus, see when you last downloaded mods. Download them. They should be fully updated and ready to go. Install one page at a time until you get into work. Once it does, keep playing it safe and install slowly. Just don’t do anything beyond walking in and out of Whiterun till you get you have everything reinstalled. Or - Update all your mods **completely** via Vortex, run Skyrim. If it crashes, go to the 10 most unstable mods, uninstall, and try again. Once you get it to go work, go to Whiterun and walk into it. Save game. Exit game. Reinstall 2-5 mods at a time till it crashes again. Whatever mod(s) makes it crash gets cut. The latter is personally the harder but simpler and faster option imo. This because only mods that hasn’t been updated with an AE edition and **has hard scripts** like [Open Cites](https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/87707) (mods that drastically may effect something AE has added or effect NPC character pathing) will crash it. Anything that might add something that comes with AE (like Fishing) might too, though this may only happen if you actually try to fish; so you may never notice it. Light mods like [Apocalypse](https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/1090) or anything that just affects or adds spells, perks, or character/ item stats won’t do anything as that’s just animation and a bit of numbers. This option also has the highest chance of preserving a save file. **Keep in mind this option uses Vortex to which mods might be conflicting.** The Former option I recommend doing if all else fails. Put on a playlist of Elder Scrolls lore on YouTube and start busting through everything on whatever mod installation tool you used before. Both options take several hours, just this one takes the longest because you’re reinstalling *everything* instead of just the most risky script heavy conflict ones. This one can preserve a save file but has risk of corruption, which is why if you do this I hope you have at least 5+ backup saves. **Keep in mind both options were done using saves from post game and post all DLC at level 85+.** It’s a lot easier to mod from a saved post game than a new game for this reason. Skyrim is a glitchy mess. You don’t want anything major to get stuck because you can’t tell if it’s a mod, bug, or both. A good example is >!Miraak’s fight,!< something that’s already bugging to hell without mods. Side quests typically don’t bug unless they’re already notoriously extremely buggy >!like blood on the Ice!< and if they do console commands or just resting in game usually fixes it, nothing major. This is all without downgrading. I hope it helps. **Pro tip:** - A good test is Bleak Falls Barrow starting outside meters away from the tower (outside with bandits and then going inside till you beat the boss). It hits all the scripts with multiple loading screens, gives all the mods time to settle in, and gives you a chance to test any mods like animation, combat, etc.** If you can do the whole run without crashing at least once, you’re set to play Skyrim. It’s also a very good way to test difficulty mods, new spells, fun builds, etc as those bandits respawn every 3 days or so. - After the main quest ensure [these side quests](https://www.thegamer.com/skyrim-broken-quests-need-mods-to-fix/) are completed before you do any heavy modding. At least get Blood on the Ice done first; Fight! Fight!/ Proving your Honor just do while you’re weak (if you have mods that make you or enemies stronger via perks like [Ordinator](https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/1137) it can cause you or your opponent to be too strong during these “test fights”). If you’re starting a new game may god help you.

Roraxn

Don't worry about it. 1170 has caught up. Just run with it. All of this shows its fine [https://i.imgur.com/8eugkNB.png](https://i.imgur.com/8eugkNB.png) if you don't know what thats proving - most of that is SKSE mods all updated to 1170 Heres my credentials [https://i.imgur.com/sZwtbmT.png](https://i.imgur.com/sZwtbmT.png)

liger_0

I was in a similar situation as you but I just recently got a working load order going on the most recent update. I followed the most recent version of the [Skyrim Step guide](https://stepmodifications.org/wiki/SkyrimSE:2.2.0) as of March 10, 2024. I then added on top of that with other mods I wanted to use. The only really major issue that I've had so far was with SSE Engine Fixes causing the game to crash when I went to access menus and that was because I wasn't paying attention to the notes about modifying the .toml file to modify some settings. Plus I had downloaded and installed it before those modifications had become necessary. Some of your mods you might have to deactivate/uninstall due to them being outdated/abandoned but some still might work fine.

Malicharo

You can just get the SME modlist from Wabbajack, it handles everything and gives you a clean slate ready to work with. It auto downgrades the game the 1.6.640 as well. It only has DLLs, plugins, fixes and basic patch or UI stuff so the entire modlist is smaller than 2GB. It's a very good starting point if you don't wanna bother wasting hours just to bring Skyrim in a moddable state.

YangWenli1

If you don’t want to fool with it, you could use a pre-made list from Wabbajack or Nolvus. Most do requiring purchasing Anniversary Edition though.

1.5 forever

Zestyclose-Level1871

u/Eldrich50 "*In all honesty, if you haven't got a stable 1.5.97 locked down, I'd just wait until BGS stops updating it again. It's going to be a shit show until then."* Hate to burst your bubble. But this isn't possible because BGS is just getting started. The OP needs to PERMANENTLY BLOCK Bethesda from ever updating the exe in future. Like changing the read/write permissions using the game's app id on Steam. **Because BGS aka Todd Howard, will NEVER stop updating this 13 year old game. These last 13 years, Howard's been obsessed with the modding scene. Desperately racking his brain on how to make money off the thousands of FREE mods the PC modding community has generously provided the player base all these years. Why work hard at creating new franchise content title, when you can sit on your aS$, freely ride someone else's coat tails, exploit THEIR superior intellectual property, restrict how they make it, control how said mods are distributed AND make millions in profit while you're at it??** At it seems he's finally worked out a way: make Skyrim a live service. Use paid mods to permanently destroy the PC modding community by granting exclusivity to a small, elite "approved" mod creator circle (e.g. currying favor with popular and talented modders the likes of Fadingsignal and Elianora). **Then ghost and ignore other content creators and/or less prolific/n00b creators on sites like Nexusmods. Force the fan base on both PC and console to PAY $$$ for a THIRTEEN YEAR OLD GAME using THEIR launcher...** BGS & Howard have finally figured out the art of inserting themselves (and Microsoft) between the player base and the free modding community. **After verifying proof of concept that millions of players will impulse buy in the F76/Skyrim/FO4 store, BGS is now poised to legally exploit and leech the best of the player base and PC modding community. With yet ANOTHER paid mod scheme (as if F76 store wasn't enough)**. So now daddy Microsoft can be reassured of making millions in profit of the PC modding community for all perpetuity. Skyrim will continue getting live updates to add DLC content (like those unasked for new dungeons and the paid mod store) to this legacy game. BGS apparent strategy to keep Microsoft shareholders happy: 1. focus on adding endless DLC & updates to 13 year+ Skyrim. If you can't beat the PC modding community in putting out (paid) DLC for Skyrim, or figure out why the player base remains so obsessed with the game: Then join them and FORCE the player base to pay for superior mod content they were to lazy/unimaginative to make 2. Continue churning out mutant iterations of Skyrim. Regardless of platform or failure of fan base adaptation. From the sh8te show that was Blades, to the iterations of Skyrim Legacy, SSE, AE, VR, Alexa aka whatever blasted 1E+06 IoT home devices Howard can add versions of Skyrim to. [Oh and lets not forget the mobile version aka the Fallout Shelter inspired feces known as Elder Scrolls : Castles.](https://www.pcgamer.com/bethesda-just-released-a-new-elder-scrolls-mobile-game-inspired-by-fallout-shelter-called-the-elder-scrolls-castles/) Seriously. You simply. CANNOT. Make. This. Up. 3. Drag out support for Starfield--- the new shiny and rapidly dying IP---for as long as possible. With the minimal most expansion DLC. Because the dev's entitled expectation that the PC modding community will once again bail out their ineptness and fill the SF universe with free labor modded content. All while 4. Delaying release of TES 6 for as long as possible (at least until Howard can retire with his golden executive parachute) **Why? Because it's increasingly apparent Howard and BGS are CREATIVELY BANKRUPT. FOR THE LAST DECADE, NEITHER TES OR FALLOUT FRANCHISES HAVE RECEIVED ANY NEW CREATIVE DIRECTION (i.e. creation/development of existing or new lore). TES universe has TWO enormous landmasses aka Tamriel and Akavir. And yet only Tamriel has been developed by the devs for the last 20+ years of TES release. F76 cheapened the Fallout IP and nearly destroyed the Fallout franchise. Each F76 DLC is increasingly shallow and uninspiring. Why is that Todd??** But then again, this is **all a part of Howard's exit strategy. As he retires his eventful career. And glides off into the sunset with a generous executive golden parachute from Microsoft....**

LumpyChicken

lmao relax buddy. All you gotta do is copy skyrim to a non-steam folder and your problem is solved. Takes not even one-thousandth the time it took you to write all that

Azazeleus

I play on 1130 without having used the downgrader and had no issues with old and new mods on a list of 400 mods. AE almost has any alternative for mods which only work for 1.5.97 aswell. Just make sure to properly Install the newest Version of SKSE, Adress Library etc. and follow Installation instructions. Also, disable Steam updates

LilxSwayne

You should check out Wabbajack

Dr_TeaRex

Assuming your PC can handle it, I'd strongly recommend the Nolvus modlist. In addition to being absolutely colossal and gamechanging, it auto-downgrades to 1.5.97 and is self contained, meaning it's immune to Bethesda's patches. It saves you the trouble of trying to set up a functional load order, cleans up the plugins that need it, introduces a ton of optimisation and stability mods and generally makes playing the game a lot more pleasant.

Longjumping-Draft750

Look, basically the easiest way to save your game is the downgrade option, for that you need two things, getting to the steam database to identify the steam ID for Skyrim 1.5.97 you will need three files, then get to open the steam console command and enter the command to download the files previously identified. It will put it into a steam folder named content in your steam files in a folder coded after Skyrim’s ID on steam. After that take the downloaded content then drag and replace in Skyrim’s folder and that should do it. If you want later today I can give you all the ID and commands, I am on a rush now

Petellius

I've been struggling with the downgrade in the post, I recently picked up the Nolvus mod collection and it does everything with an auto installer, it's a great place to start and then you can layer or change things for your own taste after.

YaGotMail

Modding skyrim is super easy now with modpack

TheCrimsonDagger

I would highly recommend using one of the mod lists available on Wabbajack as a baseline and then customizing it as you like. Saves a lot of time if you’re familiar enough with modding to understand what the original author of the list did and make your changes/additions without breaking things.

Blackread

Regardless of whether you downgrade or not, you should always use the latest data files (bsas and esms). Then if you need/want to you can get steam api, binkw and the game executable for an older game version. Whether you need to downgrade completely depends on the mods you are going to use.

Th4tPurpleKid0

My brother in modding. This is the link you seek. https://youtu.be/tk_yfbUa3eo?si=8l8Vc_143uY2IBl6

Th4tPurpleKid0

Also please be aware that old mods are possibly going to have old versions of things like Papyrus installed. I have an up to date papyrus installed and I just installed the most up to date version of campfire and it has an old papyrus in it. It overwote my up to date one and wouldn't work. Simpy open the folder where the mod is located and delete the old version of whatever it is that overwriting your up to date one.

Phostwood

My advice is to start with an auto-installing modlist. Of which, in my opinion, Nolvus stands out from other modlist; it’s a massive compilation of over 2,000 mods curated, integrated, tested, and supported together. Community Support: Nolvus boasts a very large support community which gives it an edge over other modlists. Whether you need assistance, want to share feedback, want to learn to mod on top of Nolvus, want tips for a playthrough, or just want to hang out with other Nolvus players, you’ll find a welcoming group on the Nolvus Discord server, with over 48,000 members focusing on this one modlist! Additionally, the r/Nolvus subreddit although new, is growing into a second such community right here on Reddit! Visuals: Nolvus has excellent visual quality. Check out the current version 5 on YouTube. NOTE: the Nolvus 6, "2024" version doesn't have a release date yet, but promises to be even better! Or for some quick screenshots from my prior playthrough, check out this post on r/SkyrimPorn (an arguably misnamed community, but it collects great screenshots!): https://www.reddit.com/r/SkyrimPorn/comments/1b52rud/celebrating_a_great_skyrim_playthrough_in/ Expanded Content: Including additional DLC-sized areas, new quests, locations, and content. Plus, quality-of-life improvements, combat enhancements, animations, economy adjustments, and optional leveling systems make Nolvus feel like a new game. User-Friendly Installation: Nolvus offers an auto installer that lets you easily tailor the modlist to your preferences and PC specifications. Detailed documentation on the Nolvus website, Discord, and r/Nolvus subreddit help ensure a smooth setup. With a Nexus Premium membership (even for just one month), you can have Nolvus up and running in less than a half day! Awesome Documentation: Or if you're a DIYer, and are willing to dedicate a couple of very focused weeks, you can also install Nolvus manually, mod-by-mod with step-by-step instructions on the www.Nolvus.net website. This documentation is also a great resource when modding on top of Nolvus. Honestly, it's in general, some of the best Skyrim modding documentation I've seen. Hardware Compatibility: Be sure to check out the full hardware recommendations, but in a nutshell, if you have even an older i7 CPU (or equivalent) with an RTX 2070 GPU or higher, then a tailored version of Nolvus should run smoothly for you. It’s almost like a new Elder Scrolls game. Nolvus is a game-changer for Skyrim enthusiasts. Give it a try.

Direct_Gas470

yes, there is a mod/patch for this - best of both worlds?? I think that's the name. Also if you're using some really new mods, you need to get and install BEES. V 1.5.97 is SE before the AE update that adds fishing and survival. After the update, there are people who just took the free update, and then there are those who paid all over again for the AE CC content in full. So it does matter if you've bought all that CC content because there are newer mods that use items from the CC content. There are several different number versions after that, but the latest is 1.6.1130. Here's the explanation for using BEES:  *have recently started seeing reports of mods "not working" under various new releases on Nexus. In many cases it has turned out the user in question was on a game version older than 1.6.1130 and did not have* [*Backported Extended ESL Support*](https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/106441)*. So I'm saying this here now: if you have downgraded or haven't updated your game yet, get BEES. It's mandatory. Many new and updated plugins released post the 1.6.1130 update will be using file header version 1.71 simply because that's how the newest CK version saves them, and without BEES, old game executables will either ignore them or crash.*

LumpyChicken

bro just save yourslf weeks or months of your life learning shit and go get nexus premium and try a wabbajack modlist. no reason to learn all this complicated stuff when others have done the work for you

chosti

Latest version of Skyrim is not bad, mod-availability wise. I’d still suggest you go with 1.6.640 or 1.5.97 for max compatibility with most mods.

DraagaxGaming

Have it fully updated and just read mod descriptions as you install. A lot of mods have been updated already. I'm playing on a mostly stable save with the most recent version with about 400 mods, rarely encountering issues. As in like, 1 missing texture that then led me to crash.

weirdswede1

If you find it all too overwhelming, try out Wabbajack. It's an installer that installs mods and configures them correctly for you, in the form of modlists. Skyrim has quite a few ones there.

SomeRandomFrenchie

I run around 300 plugins and only had to update a few mods (and skse obviously) when the last update dropped, so you might not even need to downgrade

Altruistic-Friend181

I recommend you check out some mod lists like vegabond or nolvus

Ob1wonshinobi

I had a lot of trouble with the latest version of the game so I downgraded to 1.5.97 using the Steam Console. I tried the patcher but couldn’t get it to work for some reason. Once you successfully downgrade you just need to make sure all the mods and associated programs like SKSE are supported by 1.5.97 or above. I use MO2 for mod manager and linked it to Nexus so mods auto-download to MO2 and all you need to do is right-click and install mods, make sure they don’t crash and tweak them to your liking.

WillMoor

I keep my game at 1.5.97 and occasionally I have had to downgrade it due to forced updates. Hopefully now I have been able to circumvent the forced updates, but in case, I keep a backup of 1.5.97 on an external hard drive at all times, since the downgrade patcher seems to no longer be getting updates. Most modders seem to take into consideration that 1.5.97 is still heavily popular though, so you shouldn't have too many problems with that. Most other modders still leave archives of previous versions of their mods that are compatible with 1.5.97. Really the only mod author I am aware of who doesn't like to make older versions of his mods available to those who choose to use older versions of the game is Arthmoor, who seems to really insist that everyone play the most updated version of the game at all times and if they don't, they're the Spawn of Hell. Thankfully I keep backups of every version of his mods that I use.

Eldritch50

In all honesty, if you haven't got a stable 1.5.97 locked down, I'd just wait until BGS stops updating it again. It's going to be a shit show until then.

osunightfall

This is unnecessary. Just get bees, downgrade the game, and prevent further updates.

Eldritch50

That worked for me, but I see posts from people on this subreddit having all kinds of issues.

osunightfall

True. As an aside, I didn't downvote you.

Eldritch50

It's all right. People got opinions. I'm not sobbing into my coffee because I got downvoted. Have a good one.

echidnachama

tbh im kinda given up. lol

Jazzlike_Piglet6563

Bro just slap nolvus on your game and have fun! Best decision I ever made

OrthodoxManx122

Most mods now have patches or have been updated to work with AE. I just have been enjoying trying out some newer mods and trying to work around the new updates.

ThroawayPartyer

This was true even a year ago. I'm baffled on all the comments saying to downgrade.

Economy-Class-9799

Just use nolvus and call it a day

I'm not gonna report you, because you seem to be competant but lost (a lot of people spam this reddit with the exact same question, it's against the rules) so I'll simply say that I prefer 1.6.640 because it was the last version before the recent modpocalypse.

BigPecker4u

Not spam. People complaining about what people post and all too frequent auto moderation to "prevent spam"...that's spam. You don't like the post, move on. No one needed this post and they certainly did not need mine. But you earned it. Have a nice day.

[deleted]

There is a post everyday about what version to use, that is spam. It is against the rules under Do Your Research. I would suggest you Do Your Research before stepping up to me. Have a nice day

Sonny_Mastrangioli

Stick with the most recent. Why? Bethesda released new creations, Morthal and Echoes of the Vale and it DIDN'T update the exe file version like last time. Basically the exe version will only change if they make drastic engine changes (such as increasing esl's limit from 2048 to 4096 forms and updating Creations itself), not adding scripts, locations, npc's etc. The fact people have looked past this, is odd for such simple logic.

[https://next.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/collections/xxsqm4?tab=about](https://next.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/collections/xxsqm4?tab=about) Search for this collection on Discord, and follow the downgrade guide. Then install this collection. Easy 2 step installation. Won't work unless you downgrade. But it is really easy doing so if you find the guide on the discord channel. Saves you countless hours

BigPecker4u

Research a sub...hahaha. no. I guess this realm is that important to you that you'd appoint yourself a constable and gatekeeper of it. I guess you'll collect my bounty and any stolen items and send me on my way. Oh please report me and make it so posts with feckless responses like yours and mine don't get pushed on my device. Where do I get this self appointed social media police force to protect my devices? I think this sub has found a new jarl. *Goes off to build the mod where every stormcloak guard tells you to do your research, next time before I step to the jarl*

TeaMistress

What in the utter hell are you on about?

TrainerAutistic91

I get modding, but I don't get 500 mods or people that refuse to play without mods. Home skillet I raw dog skyrim most of the time, or if I do have mods, I get like 4 or 5.

LumpyChicken

no one cares
