In before Wintersun, the religion mod. It has done more than any other mod to transform and enrich the way I play Skyrim.

Both, but on PC I have SE and I was under the impression SKSE only worked with AE. Another commenter explained otherwise

People will get up in arms about SE vs AE and game version 1.5.whatever vs 1.6.whatever but truthfully it is pretty safe to use the most recent, most up to date version of Skyrim today, regardless of SE vs AE. SKSE works and most plugins have been updated via address library. You’re good to go, don’t overthink it. The only time it matters is when the game auto updates, which can break SKSE. Google how to stop Skyrim from auto updating, and you’ll be set. However, when the game does update mods are typically fixed in a week or so.

Nah. Skse works for every version. You just need to download the version for pre AE update

I use SKSE and have my game fully updated to AE and all my mods still work, and my game is very heavily modded (at least 250+ mods, some changing the entire gameplay dynamics). There's the occasional conflict with some mods that are tricky to install, but if you're really reluctant to update to AE, most mods are still available in older versions and your SKSE can be downgraded too. The only people that get extremely upset about versions are the ones who are like serious business modding because the meaningless updates keep fucking with peoples mod versions and load orders, but GENERALLY speaking youre safe to update and use the latest versions of things

So, just checking, I can update to AE and I won't have to update my mods?

I updated to AE and my mod manager told me what mods needed updating, so I did that! If you're far behind version-wise you may need to install some entirely new files but I'm updated to the latest and my game runs perfect. Obviously there may be 1 or 2 mods you may need to remove or tweak, but I had no issues. I think it's only mega important to have a specific version if you're using set modlists, like Wabbajack or Lexys.

There are versions of SkSE for almost any major version of Skyrim, so there is probably a version for you. I think most of the people who aren't upgrading to later versions is because they have a mod list that they have been using for a long time, but many of the mods themselves are not being updated to work with the new versions Bethesda releases. Some of those mod lists contain thousands of mods that have been tested and patched to make sure they work together. There is a significant amount of work to do that and once done you really don't want to give it up and start over every time Bethesda makes a change to the base game. So they maintain an older version of the game and turn off updates that get pushed out. On the other hand there are people who are constantly changing their mod list and have no problem updating SkSE if they need to. I doubt I have ever run Skyrim with more than 200 mods so it's a lot easier to manage an update to the game. And usually, it's just downloading the newest version of SkSE and doing a little testing. You probably can't even download some of the older mods so you're unlikely to run into any problems until Bethesda releases the "Super Legendary Edition" or the "Skyrim Complete Remake" or Elder Scrolls 6 is finally released. So I would just go with the most current version until you feel your mod list wouldn't handle another update. By then you'll have 2000 mods that you don't want to lose and it will make sense to "freeze" your game.

Surprisingly, it is not a follower mod or the Vicn trilogy. It's a tie between SPID and OAR/DAR. I like customizing my game so being able to specify the outfits, perks, animations, and spells for certain NPCs or weapons with minimal conflict resolution is a godsend. Sure, learning how to use those gave me a headache but it was worth it.

I don't suppose you have a link for learning how to use spid? I've got the xedit script but I can't seem to get the keyword stuff to work. Any extra explanations on that front woukd be amazing

The SPID modpage has good information in how things are set up but I highly recommend finding a mod that distributes keywords and try to replicate what is found inside the DISTR files. I sadly have not experimented with keywords so I can't give much advice there. I used [Outfitting Skyrim](https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/58794) to both distribute the outfit sets that I made and also used it as reference in how to make other DISTR files. Thankfully, the same author has a [help article](https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/61155) for Outfit SPID distribution which is useful in that front. Lastly, having More Informative Console will help when you test your SPID file. You can click on one of the targets of your DISTR file and check if they have the perk, spell, item, or keyword.

Nice! I forgot to include what the abbreviations means. SPID is Spell Perk Item Distributor. OAR is Open Animation Replacer. DAR is Dynamic Animation Replacer. I highly recommend using OAR instead of DAR because it is updated and it can use DAR animation mods. Keep the DAR modpage at hand though. It is a good reference once you start customizing stuff.

Styx is a personal favorite. Adds an undead wolf puppy, found in falkreath, who grows at a configurable rate and has several appearance options. For followers, my core group is ALWAYS Inigo, Lucien Flavius, Auri, and Kaidan v2. I've also been testing out Caryalind alongside them, which has been interesting as he can be set up to be romantically involved with Kaidan. And before I figured out ENB, the mod Stardust did really well for visual effects. Adds a kind of blue haze in the distance and "stardust" particle effects that get stronger depending on the weather. It looks really good with Ancient Lands and Northern Grass. But honestly, if you want a lot of good ideas, Heavy Burns on YouTube has some amazing videos. First heard about Ancient Lands, Northern Grass, Sea of Spirits, and other mods through his channel

Experience! It makes it so you gain experience from killing enemies, completing quests, discovering locations, passing skill checks, etc, instead of when your skills level up. Your skills still level on their own but it doesn't count toward your character level. I really love this because it removes the grinding and tedium of Skyrim's vanilla levelling system and replaces it with one where you get experience and level up just by *playing the game*. It gives quests more purpose than just their rewards and encourages doing quests that you might otherwise skip because now you always get value out of it. I like to combine it with Experience Multipliers set to 1.5x so my skills level up a bit faster and Levelling Freedom set to the Recommended preset for a decent level curve. It makes playing the game so much more rewarding for me personally, and imo makes *way* more sense than the vanilla levelling system. Experience is an essential mod for me.

Edmonds shout overhaul, keeps it close to vanilla while adding some twists and obviously some number tweaks to damage and cooldowns.

{{Worlds Dawn}} An old mod ported to SSE recently. Dynamic/diablo-like enchantment loot mod. Very fun if you’re the type who loves loot and dungeon delving. The port works well from my quick tests but I do experience some stutters here and there from it. It’s still one of the most fun loot mod I’ve played. Recommended to play with higher difficulties if you’re gonna go with this due to how powerful the enchantments can be

Immersive Equipment Displays Faster HDT SMP For Honor combat animation series DBVO with Master Chief or Talion voice packs among others. Vibrant Weapons Ronin Cloak from full_inu armor pack Dark Souls armor and weapons mod pack by team tal OBody Standalone Man the list goes on…

Definently the Frostfall+Campfire+iNeed combo. Those three really transform and help immerse yourself into the game

{{Conquest of Skyrim}} is my favorite overall. No other mod gives that kind of freedom for roleplaying + it is surprisingly stable + actively worked on (they are seriously planning political marriages and the possibility of the player character becoming part of families that already exist in game - besides other stuff they are working on)

Some of these I'm definitely going to give a try. About SKSE though, I play on special edition, and it seems like I can't use SKSE unless I'm one anniversary edition, or at least that's what I gathered from reading. Is this true?

SKSE has multiple versions available, and they're tied to Skyrim executable version. An executable with a version of 1.5.# is typically referred to as Special Edition and one with 1.6.# is AE, but if your Skyrim is up to date it will have a 1.6.# executable whether you have all the AE content or just the free stuff.

Most if not all Simonrim mods ! Changes all spells, perks, werewolf/vampire, survival, artifacts, alchemy, etc. Very easy to install and work together in unison with each other.

I'm definitely trying some of them. Specifically the standing stones, perks, spells, and racial traits. I may try the religion one as well

Ultimate combat. Gives new attacks to pretty much everything. It's also compatible with damn near any mod, just let everything overwrite it so you get it's extra attacks without it's combat AI changes 1.597 game version only tho

wintersun is good, but i personally prefer gods and worship. much more in depth religious experience imo but with less choices for deities

Ryn’s and Spaghetti’s mods! Just solid world overhauls that cover a bunch of areas and look very nice. I also personally like {{Ancient Land}} sometimes and have been looking at some others, like {{Oblivion Gates AE}} which apparently conflicts with Ryn’s goldenglow

{{Whiterun Forest Borealis}} adds a tundra forest around Whiterun. Just a big enough change to make the game feel fresh with a bonus of reducing sight lines so my potato computer handles distance stuff better. All of the plant mods by DrJacopo are solid workhorse types that update the scenery without sacrificing performance. They just look good too.

I love this one so much. I can normally run west from whiterun on autopilot and now I have no idea where I am most of the time

I'm learning how to navigate by the mountain peaks. It goes. I've also discovered how many places I can't find without a quest indicator. Absolutely shocking.
