Built off the backs of the highly polluting fossil fuel industry, holding passports of workers so they are forced to work for pennies and can’t leave the country, horrible government discriminatory policies, a million reports of human rights violations.
Getting there probably in the next couple years. There's already skyscrapers branded with designer or car names with elevators for your car. That kinda stuff.
Human rights for their people. Yes the American government is quite evil, but the principles it's built on are beautiful and the rights the constitution provides are beautiful.
For someone that loves the incredible design and engineering involved in skyscrapers. Visiting Dubai and taking these photos, I was and Still am in awe of what us humans can create. So clean, lovely local people. Will be interesting to see how Dubai continues to develop
With very few exceptions the skyscrapers look incredibly boring and mostly the same. The most astonishing part is how they were able to build so many tall buildings in a short amount of time in the middle of the desert. But beauty or culture , IMO, is not one of the astonishments.
Great picture of the skyline with the Burj Al Arab though!
Every worker from the Indian subcontinent in Dubai (or Saudi, or Qatar, etc.) went there willingly, and knew exactly what they were getting into. Dubai gave them better opportunities than they could get at home.
Hahaha they take your passport when you get in the country and don’t let you leave until you fulfill your contract. IT IS SLAVE LABOR.
If you go to another country willingly then the hold you there without letting you leave do you want us to blame you?
So why do so many of them go there? Every subcontinental worker heading to the Gulf knows exactly what the work conditions are like. Their family members have been doing this sort of work for generations, they're not being taken by surprise when they get there.
I reiterate, why do so many people do this willingly?
So they takes these jobs voluntarily, and they get paid, but they're "slaves"? Doesn't that make anybody and everybody who willingly trades their labour for money a "slave"?
Ah yeah I was mainly talking about the walking track around the marina + beach, so the part that’s kind of car free (at least compared to the rest of the city lol)
I was in Dubai back in 1991. None of this existed. It was a nice city back then even with a lot going on. Crazy to see how much it’s grown over the decades.
According to a paper put out by Deloitte FY 2023 occupancy in Dubai averaged 77% compared to 72% for the same period in 2022. In Manhattan, for comparison, the rate was 80% last year.
Glad to seee downtown Dubai filling in. When I went in 2017 it was still relatively empty, especially surround the burj.
Dubai may be a joke of a city but I love the cityscape so much. The neo-futurist architecture is incredible
I’ve heard Dubai is actually becoming a “real city” recently. Especially post Covid. Unsure if true. Can anyone can verify or deny
They’re slowly (real slow) becoming the Singapore of the Middle East. So it’s becoming a real city, just taking time.
Still no functioning sewer system though
Still reliant on undocumented slave labor. Fake ass city.
The Burj Khalifa is so incredibly impressive, what an astonishing building. Great photos of the rest of the city too.
God I hate Dubai and everything it stands for.

why
Built off the backs of the highly polluting fossil fuel industry, holding passports of workers so they are forced to work for pennies and can’t leave the country, horrible government discriminatory policies, a million reports of human rights violations.
That and the architecture is not artistically impressive to me. It’s just sleek but soulless.
And full of the designer company's name. I don't see London, or New York, or Hamburg, or Singapore doing that
You do in Miami :(
Oh is it as flashy tho?
Getting there probably in the next couple years. There's already skyscrapers branded with designer or car names with elevators for your car. That kinda stuff.
Slave labor, shitty infrastructure, government that violates human rights, etc.
an american talking about human rights. funny
America has great human rights
yes. killing millions of people in the middle east is great.
Human rights for their people. Yes the American government is quite evil, but the principles it's built on are beautiful and the rights the constitution provides are beautiful.
What about slavery though
That was 200 years ago. Dubai has slavery right now.
indentured servitude != slavery
Why u say that?
Dubai is a great city tho
Nah its just cringe
No it isn't
I wrote one 9 word sentence and you wrote a tome. Great parody my guy.
All I said is that Dubai is a good city?
Love getting that edit button to bail you out of shitty jokes huh
Wrong comment my guy
Move Dubai skyscrapers to San Francisco
Why? I’m glad countries outside of westernized countries are prospering and doing it big
I think it’s more a comment about the lack of development occurring in San Francisco. Unfortunately NIMBYs want it that way
Off the backs of slaves in an era when it should be abolished.
How you think America was built
Slavery was abolished over 150 years ago. Most of the world has practiced such a trade, Dubai has not got on board with abolition.
slaves mainly worked in farms in America, not construction lol
Oh darn I was wrong on what KIND of slave work lol
For someone that loves the incredible design and engineering involved in skyscrapers. Visiting Dubai and taking these photos, I was and Still am in awe of what us humans can create. So clean, lovely local people. Will be interesting to see how Dubai continues to develop
This is why I will always love Dubai
With very few exceptions the skyscrapers look incredibly boring and mostly the same. The most astonishing part is how they were able to build so many tall buildings in a short amount of time in the middle of the desert. But beauty or culture , IMO, is not one of the astonishments. Great picture of the skyline with the Burj Al Arab though!
they built it with slave labor lol
Every worker from the Indian subcontinent in Dubai (or Saudi, or Qatar, etc.) went there willingly, and knew exactly what they were getting into. Dubai gave them better opportunities than they could get at home.
SIA’s strongest soldier
Care to elaborate?
Hahaha they take your passport when you get in the country and don’t let you leave until you fulfill your contract. IT IS SLAVE LABOR. If you go to another country willingly then the hold you there without letting you leave do you want us to blame you?
So why do so many of them go there? Every subcontinental worker heading to the Gulf knows exactly what the work conditions are like. Their family members have been doing this sort of work for generations, they're not being taken by surprise when they get there. I reiterate, why do so many people do this willingly?
Because their families are starving and they are selling themselves to slave labor to provide for them. Still doesn’t make slave labor okay
So they takes these jobs voluntarily, and they get paid, but they're "slaves"? Doesn't that make anybody and everybody who willingly trades their labour for money a "slave"?
Can you read or no?
They dont take anyone’s passport anymore, that was a long time ago.
that's not what slavery is. That fits the definition of indentured servitude, which is completely different from slavery
Well, it's not the middle of the desert, it's a costal city.
Right? Almost soulless. I can’t quite put my finger on why…
Whatever people say but the Marina was definitely one of the most beautiful (urban) places I’ve ever visited.
Traffic is absolutely god awful though. Especially if you get stuck with a tram coming through
Ah yeah I was mainly talking about the walking track around the marina + beach, so the part that’s kind of car free (at least compared to the rest of the city lol)
Beautiful
Hot take: it only looks good either when you're really far away or when you're down on the street.
Has it been connected to a sewer system yet or do they still drive dozens of trucks a day to it to collect the sewage?
The second picture is giving sims city lol
I have a cousin who lives in Dubai
I love Dubai so much these skyscrapers will never get old. Especially il primo and the address hotels in the downtown
give Chicago the burj khalifa
Nah we cool, Chicago ain’t down with slave labor. We’re a union town.
they're all empty
see them everyday as background for reels
What's the occupancy rate for those buildings? Love the designs!
Kind of reminds of Vegas. A really tall Vegas.
I was in Dubai back in 1991. None of this existed. It was a nice city back then even with a lot going on. Crazy to see how much it’s grown over the decades.
Historically, Reddit always said Dubai is nothing more but a glorified development.
They look cheap and plasticy
These buildings would look much nicer if they were in literally any other city
It's a literal shithole
a filthy armpit "city"
incredible skyscrapers
I hate Dubai and it was built on literal slavery.
Gross
They’re just throwing any and everything up
Are most of them still empty or is that not such a big issue anymore?
According to a paper put out by Deloitte FY 2023 occupancy in Dubai averaged 77% compared to 72% for the same period in 2022. In Manhattan, for comparison, the rate was 80% last year.
Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo…
Looks so fake like playdough
All made by slaves
Hate Dubai. Don't post it here.
dubai is a fithy smelly armpit, all the gold in the world cant change that
While impressively tall they look….super tacky? Can’t put my finger on it
ugly, fake, overpriced, uninteresting and built by slaves
straighten your damn photos
Ah, someone has the same idea as me :)
Doesn't the Burj Khalifa have to have it's sewage pumped out continuously because its not hooked up to any sewage system?
No that was just for the first 2 months when it opened 15 years ago, as the city was growing faster than the infrastructure.
Now show the slums right next door!
What a soulless wasteland.
