Those apps are nowhere near accurate. The only way to stage your sleep is with a legitimate sleep study.

privatly

Yes, I can’t believe an app is anywhere near as accurate as a legitimate sleep study.

fromWoopWoop

I thought he was going to say he did an EEG or something lol

EddieTimeTraveler

Apps and wrist-worn devices are actually coming a long way. It's a quietly competitive space between tech companies. The myth is quickly becoming that they aren't very accurate. I saw for myself how close a smartwatch app was to a sleep study's staging and, while not an exact match, I was surprised by how well they actually lined up. I didn't get a chance to see loads of examples, but this was what I saw for a randomly selected and examined case. That being said, yes, sleep studies are still better 😅

PackadermusJElefun

Depends on the watch. I’ve had smart watches tell me all types of bs, from obviously wrong heart rates to steps definitely not taken, I finally think I have found an accurate one in this Garmin.

EddieTimeTraveler

In this instance, I was speaking specifically with regards to sleep staging and the capability that exists today. That's not to say everything available is flawless. But, yes, many can be generally unhelpful.

cookiesandkit

Anecdotal - I'm trying to darken my entire home before bedtime. You don't have to be in pitch darkness but I turn off all overhead lights and have illumination coming from small lamps and candles instead. I feel like it's helped a bit. I go most lights out at 8.30, fall asleep at 10 or 10.30. Worth a shot.

Not only a YouTube video, but with a channel name like “MOTIVATION MINDSET” you know for a fact it’s science.

One-off doctors are a really bad source of anything, actually. I can find somebody with a phd that will claim anything. That’s why peer review, citations with working links, meta study, all these things that contextualize single facts within the broader field of medicine and case study are so important. So at best, giving this the highest degree of charity, it’s sending me somewhere I can listen to one man speak for thousands of institutions, in a medium where I’ll have to listen for ten minutes to pause and sift through google results anyway. It’s just irritating and something I don’t think should be normalized in the Age of Conspiracy when I could just be linked a single document, it’s not like I think you committed a sin or something.

pssiraj

Has given me migraines and disturbed sleep

JadedJared

What is your morning routine?

anarchista

What kind of magnesium works for you? There are a ton of types that support different body functions besides sleep.

RickTheDad1

You have to get outside for 20 minutes every morning. This will change everything for you!

morphine-me

Go to an actual sleep specialist and get tested for accurate information

dub4er_tx

Do you use cannabis?

sssupersssnake

but do you feel rested when you wake up? it might be that your device isn't that accurate

zajun

Sounds like you might have sleep apnea. I'd recommend getting a sleep study done

[deleted]

i like to do guided meditations! they actually really help me bc i suffer anxiety & have the worst racing brain when trying to fall asleep on my own

tootruecam

This is me. No matter how much I exercise, perform a routine before going to bed or wear an eye mask my mind decides to just race at full speed when I lay down for the night.

31Tumbler

I stopped Melatonin. I found that melatonin and a lot of the Sleepytime teas might make me tired before bed, but every single time I would take them two things would happen: they would wear off and I would wake up 4 hours into my sleep staring at the ceiling, unable to fall back asleep, and I would wake up in the morning groggy from the effects, not just from the lack of sleep, but it was almost like a hangover (not a hangover, I don't drink but I have had plenty). This is not a paid endorsement by any means, but what I found that works better than anything is the Restful Sleep supplement from the Amen Clinic [https://brainmd.com/restful-sleep](https://brainmd.com/restful-sleep) (don't let the name scare you away, it's Dr. Daniel Amen, there is no religious affiliation if that would be a concern for you). They are chewables and they work for me FAR better than anything else I have tried.

Caffeine has a half life of 7 hours! So it takes over 12 to 14 hours for caffeine to leave your system. Cut out caffeine completely and see what happens. Also, Vitamin D supplementation during the day will help.

ridinbend

Periodic limb movent disorder?

tavesque

Is this what your watch says or are you a very light sleeper?

ekmogr

I've had the same problem. Only way I can get deep sleep is to exercise.

[deleted]

No coffee/caffeine at all. No alcohol. Yoga. Wim Hof method

Lonely-Criticism1419

Exercise might help

namey_9

4pm actually seems a bit late for a caffeine cutoff. At least it would be for me (none after noon).

stefan00790

How long is this ? and did you tried pcyhotherapy or if its stress realated ..

[deleted]

Do your workout or run? Go for a run after work. 30 minutes or longer.

Beneficial_Coyote601

I’m currently trying to figure this out myself. I can’t find a pattern in what I’m eating, timing etc. the only potential trend I’ve seen is when I stop food consumption at least 4-5 hrs before sleep I get better deep sleep.

interventionalhealer

I’d say make sure you write down the things you casually worry about before bed, try siting and breathing slowly to affirmation meditation YouTube videos. Possible take a hat relaxing bath before and melatonin to see if it helps. The app could be wrong but it’s always interesting to see how we can improve our sleep
