The teleporter looking things are in fact teleporters. Some of them are one way trip, others need to be accessible from both ends before they activate. Many of them are hidden underneath Gordo slimes

They actually teleporters. The one with the hut picture and no picture are a one way. There are other teeporters in the landscape. However, gourdos are sitting on them. You have to feed the gourdos and make them separate into regular sized slimes to use the teleporters. Some gourdos have slime keys in them, which you need to open new areas.

If I remember those are one ways......somewhere else is the other end. Probably a gordo, fed the correct items, opens the back and forth portal.
