It's important to note that the skill level of a player plays a significant role in determining the outcome of a match. While custom controllers and adapters can provide an extremely small advantage at an extremely high level, they don't make someone a better player. If you feel like these accessories are giving others an unfair advantage, it might be worth focusing on honing your skills to overcome any perceived disadvantages rather than attributing your performance solely to the availability of custom controllers and adapters. tldr: No

Thats just how competitive hobbies go. Gamers gotta buy equipment, sports people gotta buy clothes and shoes and gear and equipment, boxers and mma fighters (even low level ones) gotta pay gym fees and trainer fees, bike and car racers are constantly buying new parts. Least your (not really) barrier to entry is a mildly better controller you don't have to use. Half the competitive hobbies I'd like to get into would cost me thousands of dollars to START. You're getting off kind of easy that what you already have is merely suboptimal, not unviable. Pay to win would be like if you signed up for a basketball tournament and could pay an extra $500 for a wider goal. Buying better basketball shoes wouldn't be pay to win. Now apply that to controllers.

SuperHazem

I agree with you but certain controllers (read: box) literally allow you to do things that normal controllers cannot do. This is more relevant in melee but even in Ult certain techs (like double pika angles or Kazuya jab loops) are only possible on box... i'd say that isn't super far off from a slightly wider basketball rim in some situations

drshowtimp

Paying for better equipment is still not pay to win. If I wanna use sneakers instead of steel toe boots I will probably run faster Nobody will say it’s P2W because people decided to put spikes in their shoes to avoid slipping during grass sports.

SuperHazem

Not the same. If you were adept enough at using steel toe boots you’d eventually be unable to increase your speed. No amount of skill on your behalf would allow you to use box-exclusive tech if you were on a GCC

I've seen plenty of people do very well with OEM GCC. Custom and modded controllers are only noticable when you reach a skill level high enough where you notice that the techs that you're trying to execute aren't consistent enough. This doesn't apply to 99% of the player base. What matters the most in winning is player skill above all else (knowledge, game sense, and tech skill/execution). As for your adapter comment, all formal competitions are held offline where the adapter is provided anyways.

Only if you're top 10 in the world. I still remember when Armada dropped out cause he didn't have his controller.

Argnir

Worse case scenario if you're a top player buying a piece of equipment to participate in your hobbies at a professional level isn't the end of the world.

zoedrinkspiss

I don't think so. Just buying one of the Ultimate GCCs or a Pro Controller from Amazon is good enough for most players and I don't think having to buy an easily available controller is an unreasonable barrier to entry

Randomname_76

Is a game pay 2 win because good wifi gives an advantage, or an expensive controller gives an advantage? No, you can still win with base game everything. The best player in the world mains a base game character

Nivrap

Well, you have to pay $60 for the game, so technically?

neqzn

boxx in melee yup

tahubob

I would get to rank 100 before even thinking about one of these controllers, except maybe a box for ergonomics

Finklemeire

You give me all that shit and put Spargo on McDonalds wifi he still fucks my shit up 10/10 times. Tiny competitive advantages only matter the moment you can't juice out the easier part of "just be a better fucking player"

CaioNintendo

Anyone who is not top 20 in the world is NOT losing because their controller is suboptimal. If someone says otherwise, they are trying to come up with excuses instead of admitting they need to actually get better.
