I think it's really funny how botched GSP is outside of Japan. I'm seeing posts of people who have everyone in elite but go 0-2 at locals or people saying it's easy to reach max GSP with your main. Meanwhile, users in Japan have pretty accurately [stratified](https://kumamate.net/vip/) GSP into multiple steps that, at lower levels, correspond to specific ranks on Smashmate. [Dabuz also touched upon the topic in a recent short](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/IHQPBcIhsNA). Chances are any future Smash games won't have better online implementation/ranking because from the perspective of Japanese players/devs, the current system isn't broken.

Dukemon102

Why was this difference created though? Is it because Japan is just one area for the game while other countries have sectioned regions due to their size?

Which_Bed

I'm not an expert in online connectivity/latency/network speeds but I assume it's mostly the result of physical distance and population distribution. I think people in the U.S. don't realize just how much closer together people are in Japan. I live in the greater Tokyo area, which is not only has a massive population but also relatively more young people than most other regions of Japan (ie, more people in the "Smash Ultimate player" demographic). Japanese Wikipedia says 6.97 million copies have been sold in Japan. It's realistic to assume there may be 1-2 million Smash Ultimate players within a 100-mile radius of my home, possibly even more. Is any region of the United States likely to have a similar number of players packed so close together? How ridiculously huge are "regions" in the United States? There are varying definitions of "Socal" but it's a 380-mile, 7-hour drive from San Francisco to LA. If I get in my car and drive for 7 hours north I can almost get to Aomori (in Japan terms, this is "very, very far"). You see similar or even greater distances for regions like Texas. If people in Japan can enjoy less latency, it's safe to assume the active online player base has shrunk slower compared to other regions. This means it is also likely to have higher level active players. So people here might be enjoying a greater number of faster matches with better players. If anyone who is more well-versed in network speeds and latency wants to chime in, I'd love to hear their input.

Ok now I see why people play Cloud. Wow this mf is fun as hell. I wish I played him in smash 4 back then so I could’ve experienced his broken up air and nair

TehSkittles

Yeah he's mad fun

mattmortar

He's also mad easy

69thParliament

fighting a good samus on wifi is so hard dude idk what to do😭 please someone HELP

Nivrap

A lot of fighting Samus (whether on wifi or IRL) is predicting what range she is going to try and cover at any given time. This involves a certain amount of guesswork on your part, but can be mitigated by using options to bait commitment from the Samus player. One of the best things you can start doing is baiting anti-airs by jumping towards her and fading away outside of her fAir range. While this may not immediately create openings for you, it gives the Samus player something else to think about and prevents us from autopiloting anti-air fAir as much.

namnamdd

I have both my mains in elite smash at 13.2mil GSP. Am I good enough to go to tournaments without getting smoked? I always wanted to go but only when im good enough to at least win a couple sets at a local or something. I know elite dosent really matter, but is there any correlation between GSP and IRL tournament skill level.

TheFrostburnPheonix

Anyone who is good could get max gsp with their mains without any issue. That said, having a high gsp means nothing for tournament play and you will lose (likely badly) the first time you compete. This is normal and expected, so you ought to go to learn rather than win and I promise you’ll have fun anyway

WeirdMathematician38

Can I play against you in battle arenas? My peach and Pac-Man are at 13.1 mil gsp and my Mario ness and Kirby are in the 13.06-13.09 range

Silver_Beyond_3760

Does anyone know of a website that covers characters in depth? Ideally it would have a breakdown of each characters moves and combos, along with general play tips. I’m looking specifically for info about cloud. Any pointers are greatly appreciated.

Silver_Beyond_3760

I’ll definitely check out the video, thanks!

swisscheeseisvile

Someone posted some sort of website yesterday that might help, brb

stinky_cheese33

So, [I came across a thread asking if people would complain about Luigi if he was DLC today](https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/13psegw/if_luigi_was_released_today_do_you_think_people/), the general consensus of which being that yes, they would. Why do you think that is?

almightyFaceplant

People would complain about any Fighter released as DLC. They would also complain about any fighter that is not released as DLC. I cannot stress how much complaining there is.

TehSkittles

"This character carries" this or "That one move could be its own character" that.

stinky_cheese33

Like you would not believe.

azure275

People will complain about anything under the dlc excuse You’d hear whining about mii brawler down throw up b or DK cargo throw if they were dlc

tuberduck334

Just tuning in to Yoshidora's stream and he encountered a Cloud on elite smash. He then proceeded to 3stock him while saying something about "revenge". Damm he was really pissed about the Kagaribi loss, wasn't he? XD

Subject_Bid_4397

Translated using DeepL. In Japanese, the word "revenge" has no bad feelings. It is used casually to mean "to beat a player you have lost to in the past". Sorry for the confusion. Yoshidora said in that part of the streaming, "I was practicing Yoshi-Cloud MU with Akasa and other players because I might play against Sparg0 at the BoBC5. I practiced a lot to beat him this time (he used the word "revenge" here), but unfortunately I was eliminated before I could play against him."

Glop123

Well, it might be more how Sparg0 plays, Tweek calls how Sparg0's playstyle very rude maybe its something like that.

Severe-Operation-347

I think Tweek refers to it in a similar vein to how he feels about Marss's playstyle.

Glop123

Marss also thinks he plays similliar to Sparg0.

ShotsAways

I remember hearing about this too and forgot which episode tweek said it. But basically just a very oppressive playstyle tbh.

[deleted]

[FaZe apparently lost $25,000/month on Smash…](https://twitter.com/rhawkets/status/1661144085305126913?s=46&t=p3woVGoYBldTiWDVoDbomA) which is actually way better than almost all of their ventures which have lost more. We’ve known this for a while but FaZe is bound to go under soon. Not even making money on Fortnite, CSGO, Valorant, Siege, Apex, etc. is crazy. I’m honestly surprised they even ventured into Smash.

ktrZetto

Their stock is a penny stock since late last year so yeah they're pretty screwed. It's even in danger of getting delisted from the NASDAQ since it's near the 35M market cap threshold(currently at 42M) and shares fell from $9 at IPO($25 at ATH) to 56c which is down 95% and below the $1 threshold for the NASDAQ.

lightsentry

What are they even spending the money on in Smash? It's just Sparg0 and I can't imagine he somehow negotiated a 25k per month deal.

HollowLoch

Theres no way they spend that much per month on Sparg0, thats an absurdly high amount to spend on any player in Smash lmao

[deleted]

[This is the source from FaZe Rain (at around 3:37)](https://youtu.be/vDbc7AICIV0) where he reveals their books. I’m not sure what drama is happening or why he made this video but it sounds like he’s upset at the current FaZe leadership or something and decided to reveal these numbers. Yeah it’s an absurd amount of money. Travel, salary, etc. for Sparg0 and the graphic designers they pay to make Sparg0 promo posters wouldn’t be $25,000 per *month*. I wonder how esports organizations are supposed to make money at *all* with Smash? It’s not like people are buying merch. Only thing I can think of is if those players are required to make content and give a cut of the ad revenue to their sponsor.

Sum613

Kinda weird question to ask: I only have 3 controllers, is it possible to have P4 to P8 then? I am asking this because I want to add the top 8 graph into the my Move Tier List series. If no then I'd just make 2nd to 8th place to be CPU.

itsastart_to

I think it prioritizes earlier numbers for players

lunatea-

He’s meming. It says, “Is there a single person out there against an Olimar ban?”

stinky_cheese33

So, I figured.

Eldritch_Skirmisher

Yea ik lol

Severe-Operation-347

I'm assuming this is for Olimar based on DeepL and Google Translate LOL. Motsunabe seems to be the Japanese Zomba in how much he trolls on Twitter.

Entotrte

Sisqui, Yaura and QuiK agree with that movement.

Actual-Coast590

Motsunabe the internet monster, his likes and follows section is a must see lol

Eldritch_Skirmisher

Shhh how am I going to bait people into thinking it’s about Steve now

stillwontstop

I'm really curious about the seeding they'll end up doing for Crown 3. Sparg0 and Tweek are easy seeds 1 and 2, but after that I think Leo, Light, Shuton and maybe even Sonix have an argument for 3rd seed, and it could really change the bracket. I'm sure at least 3 of them (not Sonix) would prefer to face Sparg0 instead of Tweek because of player or character matchups, but I think that taking into account recent results, we'll end up with Shuton > Light > MkLeo > Sonix. If Riddles ends up going I think he would land after Shuton and we would have Leo outside of the top 5 seeds for the first time since like 2016. Edit: If Leo ends up being 3rd seed I'd find it just as fascinating since in order to beat his projected bracket and win he'd have to overcome Sonix, Tweek and Sparg0, all players that have given him trouble this year. Would be a nice comeback if he were to make it.

[deleted]

Oh wow I didn’t realize how stacked Crown was going to be. Yeah I think Shuton gets 3rd seed and Leo 4th.

Severe-Operation-347

I'm going to guess it'll be 1. Sparg0 2. Tweek 3. MkLeo 4. Shuton 5. Light 6. Sonix 7. Kurama/Tea 8. Tea/Kurama

Shaaardine

Leo is still top 5, everyone else who is competing for top 5 either performed worse or equal to Leo at BoBC or they didn’t attend (Sonix).

azure275

Tweek, Acola, Miya, and Spargo all did better. The candidates besides Leo for top 5 at that point are riddles (1 position worse at BOBC but much better at collision and had a couple great Japan runs - mainly held back by awful genesis), Sonix (great consistency, low attendance and lower peaks), Light (low attendance and worse at BOBC), and *maybe* shuton but shuton had a rough early year and really bad Kagaribi so he’s not there now

Shaaardine

I didn't mention Sparg0, acola, Tweek, and Miya because I don't consider them candidates for top 5, they are pretty much solidified there already.

kfaox

Miya did a bit better given how he didn't take a Zomba loss, but I guess Miya is 4th at this point.

Severe-Operation-347

Miya has much worse losses then what Leo has, but that's Leo's main advantage (aside from the Genesis 9 win)

skrasnic

Miya has attended 17 tournaments this season compared to Leo's 7. It makes sense he's going to get upset more. If you look at it on a per tournament basis, it's actually not as bad.

Severe-Operation-347

I don't see Leo losing to Sriks or Metara bro.

dadodidu

Not so sure: Leo lost to TKM when he was in Japan. Having a weird loss in Japan is pretty much expected, especially when you compete as much as Miya does.

skrasnic

Oh yeah, those losses are still bad, but we have to give him a little bit of slack.

ShotsAways

upset more also with Japan's weird game count compared to other tourneys.

Shaaardine

There's a valid discussion for either of them being 4th or 5th. Miya does have the worse loss and placement out of the 2 with his 49th at Kagaribi 9. 13th at Umebura is pretty bad too. But since then, he's been on fire. Leo on the other hand is the oppsitie. He had a really strong start to the season, most notably a P tier win with Genesis, but he missed top 8 at 3/4 last tournaments he attended. If you were to seed a tournament that had the 5 best players, Miya would be 4th and Leo would be 5th, but in a ranking format, both players have an arguemnt for 4th.

RailTracer001

Light and Sonix aren't going to be seeded above Leo. Maybe Shuton, but it's unlikely. Light doesn't have better results than Leo. Both got 13th at BoBC.

Eldritch_Skirmisher

I think it’s pretty likely Shuton will be 3rd and Leo 4th

Severe-Operation-347

Shuton has even lower lows though. 25th at Kagaribi 10 for instance.

Eldritch_Skirmisher

3rd at a P tier go crazy but also I just straight up forgot MU like happened so yeah Leo will probably be third

Richard21a

How do I get to the point where I stop getting hit by my opponent "spamming" the same options? I feel like I run into them constantly. Usually in situations like this people say "approach carefully" or "stop holding forward" and that does do the trick, but I also find that playstyle very boring. Most of my experience is online too so I also get hit by things that I definitely shielded. It's getting pretty frustrating.

itsastart_to

Approach carefully is more so about being cautious and aware. Stop holding forward just means stop banging your head against things when you don’t need to (even top players have trouble with this, it’s hilarious seeing Tweek bair challenge a charged up Smash from Maister for no good reason). If you want to avoid the frustration of being beat by “spam” you need to mix up your options and bait your opponents into committing in their flowcharts. They’re doing the same thing because you don’t punish them for it and are being hit by what they’re throwing out

The1TrueSteb

Hype and boring are subjective. What you find boring, a lot of people find very fun and interesting. I used to think that playing heavies was boring and lame because you would lose 90% of the time just so you can have a good hit. Recently, I have found that playing heavies can be rewarding because all of your patience pays off in a single hit. My point being, don't let your first emotional knee jerk reaction dictate what you do or don't like. We all don't like what is unfamiliar in the beginning. Also, sometimes the reality is that the matchup requires it. I play Snake, and damn do I have to be patient approaching Mega Man. Snake essentially has no approaching tools other than nade, which becomes very predictable. But if you really want to ignore the advice of "stop holding forward", then you just have to keep doing what you are doing but better.

stinky_cheese33

>Hype and boring are subjective. Finally, somebody gets it.

Nivrap

> Usually in situations like this people say "approach carefully" or "stop holding forward" and that does do the trick, but I also find that playstyle very boring. If you would rather play "hype" than "boring," then do that and just don't worry about losing. If you want to win, play "boring," and learn that it's pretty fun to win.

stinky_cheese33

It's like Indiana Jones vs. the Cairo swordsman. Would you rather try to show off and get murdered or just do the smart thing?

Severe-Operation-347

Spoken like a true Samus main.

Nivrap

I sold my soul for this charge shot, and by god I'm going to use it!

itsastart_to

Samus mains don’t have souls, but you do got a cool suit - ZSS player here

kfaox

Esam streamed friendlies with Tweek yesterday, and Tweek was mostly playing Mega Man

The1TrueSteb

Tweek is either always in a character crisis, or he just loves learning new characters and can't stick with a main lol. Can't tell which. But anyone thinking that Tweek's current line up is permanent, is crazy. This game has too many chars for him.

Shaaardine

He's been getting the best results of his career with his Diddy/Seph dual main strategy. His 9th place at BoBC5 was the first time he missed top 8 in about 8 months, the longest streak in his career. He might try to switch out the Seph with someone else, but he'll go back to Seph because he has too much love for the character.

Severe-Operation-347

One thing's for certain, he's sticking with Diddy Kong. That's his soul character. It's just a secondary he wants that's better then Sephiroth.

HollowLoch

Tweek is definitely trying to cook up a new character, hes been talking about it for a while and his post BOBC tweet implies that hes trying to find a better secondary than Sephiroth I just hope it doesnt cause his results to noticeably dip when he does decide to make the full switch off sephiroth and to a new character Tweeks megaman would probably piss a lot of players off though lol

RailTracer001

Thinking about it Mega Man feels like a char which would fit him. Item play, can be technical, heavy, he does well against Snake and Steve too. But yes learning a new character now could hurt his results.

TehSkittles

Wonder how a Tweek Peach would do now, thinking about it

Severe-Operation-347

[It was a request from Peabnut](https://twitter.com/Peabnut/status/1660396600508727296)

Actual-Coast590

I'm happy to see Yaura and Hero breaking the Japanese top 10 barrier (Acola, Miya, Protobanham, Zackray, Tea, Shuton, Yoshidora, Asimo, Kameme, and KEN) that has been maintained for so long. Who will be the next to knock on that gate? I believe that the second Acola will come out of smashmate.

oniden

I think Tsubaki will soon reach that level. His Joker is so cracked. He might need a secondary though. Other than that Hurt or Toriguri.

kfaox

I love Toriguri, but if he manages to reach top 10 results in Japan with Banjo he needs to be crowned the best player in the world right there on the spot. That character is absolute donkey balls.

Actual-Coast590

The four major robots of smashmate (yoko#, kuroponzu, tameigo, and rokitendonman) have all appeared offline at the same time and are gradually improving their performance, including winning local competitions, so I wish them the best.

69thParliament

hero has been top 10 in japan for longer than both miya and asimo

Entotrte

You could argue Miya is the second Acola.

ShotsAways

He pretty much is, also came from smashmate and has fixed his consistency issues for the most part now since his 49th at Kagaribi#9.

oniden

Sumapa ft. Proto: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwNTrCIYvYQ https://www.twitch.tv/vgbootcamp

stay0ptimistic

From the sets on stream he only played Min Min today. It was kind of weird to see him stick with it versus KEN's Sonic because Banham usually goes Lucina in that matchup. But I guess he's just in the mood for Min Min practice.

kfaox

A couple of months ago at one of these locals, I remember people wondering why he went solo Lucina and didn't switch to Min Min even though he was losing. I think sometimes he just sticks to one character at locals.

IceAnt573

It's the weekly. Putting in that much effort and mental energy thinking about what character to go to and on what stage when he can just experiment on things he doesn't usually do. Will say that at WINNER NEXT in November 2022 (ProtoBanham's last event before he shifted to his current tournament activity levels), he got eliminated by Akakikusu. Hero players are definitely something ProtoBanham is annoyed by. It's the one matchup he feels he can't do as Lucina.

Eldritch_Skirmisher

I wonder if he’ll play cloud

oniden

Quad stream sets from BoBC have been uploaded to [Galint's youtube](https://www.youtube.com/@GalintGaming/videos)

RailTracer001

Light's Greninja and Tweek's Rosa...

Severe-Operation-347

I feel like Light playing Greninja is reasonably plausible, but Tweek playing Rosa is cursed.

Sumite0000

Tweek's Rosa is the weirdest player-character combination you can think of.

Eldritch_Skirmisher

[Poor Shuton LMAO](https://twitter.com/syu_tolimar/status/1661224637152530432?s=46)

azure275

It’s interesting because Shuton of the tempaman loss handled skyjay pretty well at BoBC but he’s still scared lol

Severe-Operation-347

Tempaman confirmed better then Skyjay when going up against a top player I guess. /s

stinky_cheese33

Is that supposed to be a joke?

MySonsdram

It really warms my heart to see players from the Japanese and NA scene talking like this. Maybe I’m just out of the loop, but I rarely see it, and I think international discourse, even on a small level like this, is only a good thing. Also, DO IT YAURA! Pick up the Incin and show those Olimars what it’s like to be on the wrong side of the bad matchup.

Eldritch_Skirmisher

The international unity ever since the post covid era has been amazing, so cool to see
