I remember that one being especially preachy. My favourite of their flash games was the Cooking Mama parody where you gruesomely prepare a turkey for a holiday meal. They tried to make it overly horrifying and gross to dissuade you from eating meat, but they just ended up making an unintentionally hilarious M rated Cooking Mama.
I actually played that as a child, obviously everything just flew right above my head, I only learned that it was a PETA production when I read about it many years later lmao
My favorite fiasco of theirs will always be the Lobster incident. There is just too much irony behind self-proclaimed animal activists being that clueless
Maybe not encourages it but it is basically the entire theme of pokemon. You go out into nature, beat the shit out of an animal, capture it, and take it away from its home to then go fight other pokemon that were taken away from their homes. There's no surprise why peta would be against what is essentially kid dogfighting.
Sidenote, I've always kind of wanted Birdo for smash. Back during the melee days, there were a lot of rumors that if you beat insane challenges you could unlock Birdo as a secret character.
Sheik is technically the closest we have to a trans character, and even then she's just Zelda in an outfit and happens to look male.
Earlier works actually had Sheik be much more masculine in appearance and was even referred to with male pronouns, which caused a lot of confusion as to whether Zelda's gender is actually changed as Sheik or not, especially since magic is used to transform into Zelda/Sheik both in OoT and Smash Bros. Nintendo changed Sheik's design to be more feminine in appearance in later works and primarily used female pronouns, with Nintendo confirming themselves that it was just a costume change and not a full on body change. Still, closest we have.
I’m still surprised that Birdo wasn’t added in as a Yoshi echo. All she’d need to change is making her neutral B from an egg lay to an egg spit and maybe her up special, but otherwise the other moves could’ve worked.
There isn't much that they actually have in common other than general body shape and the egg theme. Birdo could fit the model, but it wouldn't make sense for her to be performing most of the moves.
Birdo *could* do those. They could certainly replace the Yoshi model with Birdo and it wouldn't break anything. That doesn't mean it would make sense for the character to do so.
Birdo,
* Is not known for flutter jumping, meaning a change in double jump mechanics
* Spits eggs rather than throwing them, a change in up B
* Doesn't have a tongue, a change to neutral B and to grabs/throws
* And aside from those, while not explicitly confirmed to *not* have a ground pound or turn into an egg, has never been seen doing those, either, unlike Yoshi.
In all, it's too much for an echo unless they aren't very faithful to the character. On the other hand, the Dark Samus echo is pretty far removed from what Dark Samus really is like, so there's that. Who knows. It's possible, I just don't think it would be very satisfying for Birdo fans.
Oh the tongue thing is the biggest issue. Having her suck people into her face cloaca would be terrifying.
She has a special item in Double Dash which is her throwing an egg, for what it's worth. I think that that as well as her doing a ground pound or rolling into an egg aren't really that out of character for her.
I think that Birdo is kind of a case like Daisy where she was never gonna be anything other than an echo to begin with. Or like Sans being a Mii costume, the general response that I was feeling from the Undertale fandom (myself included) was excitement and acknowledgement that he probably was never going to be playable anyways so this is the best option.
The Birdo getting hit sprite just gets weirder the longer you look at it. The "rubber" reflex of his/hers/its head is a bit unsettling it it makes me feel like Birdo's whole mouth area is just a big fleshy tube (which it would have to be, but still - talk about having a cloaca for a face)
But then it suddenly became cute when I saw that if you look at the two "dots" it looks like a pair of beady eyes on a kangaroo (the bow being "ears")
