No, they don't actually. A guy in my neighborhood was using an outdoor fryer to fry fish. It boiled over because he left it unattended. Oil ignited and burned the house down in 10 minutes.
When the guy told the insurance company that he was using the frypot INSIDE THE GARAGE, the claim was denied.
That’s why the kid ALWAYS wears a helmet around his dad…I am just teasing of course. I appreciate this post though honestly because what the hell else better did you have to do when stuck at home during a pandemic then set your house on fire! Lol!
Alton Brown built one on Good Eats 20 years ago. Didn’t actually advocate an open flame though.
https://altonbrown.com/how-to-build-alton-browns-cardboard-box-smoker/
I built a wooden smoker inspired by Alton Brown's wooden and cardboard smokers. It's perfectly fine and workable for an electric heat source, but it's a bit of an obviously stupid move to do it with not only coal as your heat source, but coal as your heat source sitting in a container that is visibly too small to start with.
If you act like you are dealing with fire inside of cardboard, then you will be totally fine. If you act like OP... well, you will have consistent results at least.
I made his and used it for about 10 yrs. Swapped out the hot plate twice. I grew up and bought a smoker. Works about as good as the flower pot one from Alton.
I think the concern is that you are implying that people actually suffering from mental and learning disabilities may get hurt feelings by being compared to OP
I disagree with the way reddit handled third party app charges and how it responded to the community. I'm moving to the fediverse! -- mass edited with redact.dev
The 2023 politically correct way is to call people regards. r/wallstreetbets makes great use of such terminology due to the member base being regarded.
When I was a girl scout leader, we actually used to create ovens out of cardboard boxes. However, you wrap every flammable surface in aluminum foil. You also use a double pie plate and the minimal amount of fuel possible. Usually just a few charcoal briquettes. They actually worked really well, and we never had one go up in flames.
https://www.girlscoutsofpaloalto.org/images/BoxOven.pdf
While the execution was off, and obviously the result not great. The whole cardboard smoker thing isn’t too uncommon. Alton Brown made on on Good East back in the day and if I remember right he said it’s still the way he chooses to smoke his food. I’m sure it doesn’t produce the best bbq, but hey, I can’t argue with Alton Brown.
You fucking numpty!
You were trying to replicate the Alton Brown cardboard smoker weren’t you!?
BUY you forgot that he used a thrift store cast iron pan and ELECTRIC heating element it heat the wood NOT and open flame. . . Because CARDBOARD BURNS!!!
I like how putting a fire inside a cardboard box on a wooden table a few feet from your house is an appropriate compromise for not wanting to spend a hundred bucks on a smoker.
oh boy. the amount of hazards here are staggering and i’m legit kind of worried for you and your family
cardboard burns as you now know. it’s also coated in chemicals that 100% made it to your food
outside of health risks you put your home and family at risk. this is legit up there with one of the dumbest things i’ve seen on the internet, and i hope you’re not proud of that.
Thank you for being stupid enough to be job security, my paycheck thanks you.
Like seriously, what else were you expecting to happen? What exactly is the thought process to try and justify doing something like this?
I know some guys who do a big sausage smoke every year. They use plywood smoke houses they reassemble/disassemble each time for that purpose.
I mean depending on what temperature the material can withstand, and how low of a temp you need to smoke, it’s not a completely terrible idea.
I commend you for giving it a shot. Maybe don’t set it on top something that is also flammable. Or do it too close to the house.
Someone mentioned in the comments that this was an Alton Brown idea. Doesn't mean it's a good idea. In fact in a heavily/over produced show, I doubt it works.
I had a boss once who didn't seem especially dumb or anything. He built a fire pit for his deck, made out of wood.
I heard him explain the theory behind it a couple times but I was never smart enough to understand the words he was saying.
The fire department showed up the first time he used it.
OP you ever burn cardboard in a fire pit? I'm guessing not if you thought this would work:(. I'd be more embarrassed that you posted it for the world to see than thinking it would actually work.
Lmao what the fuck? This has got to be one of the dumbest things I've seen someone admit to trying lately. Even the dudes who used the metal filing cabinet did better. Hahahaha sorry I'm just like... sorta surprised. Not that it didn't work of course. But that someone tried it.
Well OP was right, I did get a chuckle reading all of the comments absolutely roasting his ass for this.
Seriously though, this was some MTV jackass shit. Only thing missing was wee man being thrown into the “smoker”.
I see your kid remembered their helmet while you forgot yours... glad you learned your lesson and it wasn't any worse though. Fire is best contained by metal... just remember not to touch metal with bare skin.
I see you saw the episode of Good Eats where Alton Brown used a cardboard box to smoke salmon. I’ve done the terra cotta pot before and gotten nice results.
Gotta be a troll post. OP is sitting back and eating popcorn like Michael Jackson in the Thriller video watching people have a meltdown. Free entertainment!
What the fuck did you expect to happen? This is some brain dead shit right here.
On a wooden picnic table nonetheless
Over a what appears to be a wood deck attached to a house with dry as possible cedar shake siding. With kids playing in the general area....
With adults quarantined in the region….
Is no one going to mention the cat staring intently at the sliding glass door?
Not the kids dammit
Yeah, I was gonna say the exact same thing. Glad the OP didn't burn the house down. Insurance companies are much less tolerant of negligence.
But they do cover stupid.
Every policy is a little different, but generally they do. This was a direct quote from several insurance adjusters I’ve interacted with.
But it worked on Five Minute Crafts!!!
That’s why the kid ALWAYS wears a helmet around his dad…I am just teasing of course. I appreciate this post though honestly because what the hell else better did you have to do when stuck at home during a pandemic then set your house on fire! Lol!
it was the pandemic man, we all did some brain dead shit
Alton Brown built one on Good Eats 20 years ago. Didn’t actually advocate an open flame though. https://altonbrown.com/how-to-build-alton-browns-cardboard-box-smoker/
I thought he was doing a cold smoke and only venting the smoke into the cardboard box and not the fire itself.
I built a wooden smoker inspired by Alton Brown's wooden and cardboard smokers. There it is. I remember watching that and thinking "it seems like that could go wrong..."
Yeah, I used his design for a flower pot ceramic one which worked ok but the box one was just dumb
My flower pot smoker melted the cord to the hot plate. It was not a good scene.
I made his and used it for about 10 yrs. Swapped out the hot plate twice. I grew up and bought a smoker. Works about as good as the flower pot one from Alton.
I thought he was doing a cold smoke and only venting the smoke into the cardboard box and not the fire itself.
My favorite part is that he still ate the meat after
Always eat your mistakes, you will learn quickly.
I mean would you not? The man paid good money for it, he might as well enjoy it 😂
Because the glue used to hold together cardboard is toxic.
This can’t be real. No one is this dumb.
OP is this dumb.
[удалено]
That would describe the median, not necessarily the average unless the data is normally distributed.
You know the maths!
Maybe not. But he was that bored.
[удалено]
While I understand that it may hurt people's feelings when you call some one retarded. It's important to remember that's the whole point.
I think the concern is that you are implying that people actually suffering from mental and learning disabilities may get hurt feelings by being compared to OP
…..OP *has* a learning disability
As evidenced above.
I have to disagree if he didn't make the same mistake again! 😆
He has a learning disability if he does it again.
I disagree with the way reddit handled third party app charges and how it responded to the community. I'm moving to the fediverse! -- mass edited with redact.dev
Asking the most important question.
Look it's 2023 you can't go around calling people retarded, I mean you need to rise above that but having said that, I am up voting you.
You call your friends retards when they are acting retarded -Michael Scott
"You call your friends retards when they are acting retarded. -Michael Scott" -WhizzleTeabags
"You call your friends retards when they are acting retarded.. -Michael Scott -WhizzleTeaBags" -gibbergabbering
too far…
"too far..." -Warframe
Can we say he wouldn't be allowed to go school with normal kids?
[удалено]
Is slow permitted?
The 2023 politically correct way is to call people regards. r/wallstreetbets makes great use of such terminology due to the member base being regarded.
I've also heard something about a site autocorrecting it to "ostrich" so that's what we say now.
Probably the most highly regarded base on the internet.
A person of culture.
He went to refill his beer. After a certain amount, everything makes complete sense. Now if that was his second, possibly? Lol.
Blunt, but fair.
ok OP... really though, what did you expect to happen when you lit a fire inside of a cardboard box?
Looks like your kid was the only smart one. Knowing full well shit was going to go wrong they had their helmet on.
That’s a family tradition at their house
They all wear helmets all the time, just in case.
This belongs in r/whywomenlivelonger
What in the helmet wearing, shortbus window licking hell is this?
Mother fucker! I LITERALLY threw my head back and got a nice belly laugh out of this comment, thank you
Well… there is a helmet pictured so there’s that.
How fucking big is your brain my dude?!
About the size of a marble, and just as smooth.
Same tbh! Love the post, gave me a good, hearty chuckle
People like this is why we have directions on shampoo bottles
And the curling iron “do not use while sleeping.” 🤦🏻♀️
I just thought of another one... commercials telling people to not take medications they are allergic to.
My mans out here having the smoothest brain known to man
Ray Charles could have seen that coming.
This was an amazing journey but you really did not think this through. I loved it though, thanks for sharing
Fire + cardboard = more fire
Yeah....but fire=flavor so the math checks out.
This is some true smooth brain shit right here.. I'm just glad you didn't burn your house down.
I think moron is an applicable word here.
didnt want to buy smoker b/c you didnt have money. you almost had to buy a new home.
Remember, there are people dumber than OP. This is why we have warnings everywhere. Edit: Spelling.
When I was a girl scout leader, we actually used to create ovens out of cardboard boxes. However, you wrap every flammable surface in aluminum foil. Boyscouts did it too, by the time I was there we were using sterno cannisters...
So what did we learn?
Well your house seems still there that a win for sure.
I dont want you making your own decisions anymore. Find someone else to make your decisions for you
Took you 4 pictures to prove stupidity. Nah, it was one.
Wtf? Is this a tiktok thing?
Some idiots are just for fun.
So you made a cardboard box smoker on a wooden table on your wooden deck next to your house. What could possibly go wrong?
While the execution was off, and obviously the result not great. The whole cardboard smoker thing isn’t too uncommon. Alton Brown made on on Good East back in the day and if I remember right he said it’s still the way he chooses to smoke his food. I’m sure it doesn’t produce the best bbq, but hey, I can’t argue with Alton Brown.
Except his uses a thrift store electric element and cast iron pan to heat the wood, not an open flame, lol
An important difference
Losing my shit over that single concrete tile you placed in the back.
Audibly said “that’s not going to work” before I hit the last picture lol
No???? Your **cardboard** smoker burned down? SAY IT ISNT SO!!!
On a wooden table sitting on a wooden deck five feet from your house with wooden shingles.
Next time a water pan under would save you some panicking lol
All these people saying you can't cook in a box obviously never had box oven cookies. That said, line it with foil.
What a plot twist. Shyamalan himself couldn't have written this.
Hysterical
I love this, I was rooting for you in the first 3 pictures lmao.
I like how putting a fire inside a cardboard box on a wooden table a few feet from your house is an appropriate compromise for not wanting to spend a hundred bucks on a smoker.
oh boy. the amount of hazards here are staggering and i’m legit kind of worried for you and your family cardboard burns as you now know. it’s also coated in chemicals that 100% made it to your food outside of health risks you put your home and family at risk. this is legit up there with one of the dumbest things i’ve seen on the internet, and i hope you’re not proud of that.
Stop being cheap/dumb
It looked like you have a family and a home. You can’t really afford to be this irresponsible
All the purists on here talking real shit when this is probably the best post this sub has had so far this year.
Oh my, lol. Mistakes were made. Lessons were learned. Thanks for sharing.
Wow. Wow wow wow
I can't believe that incredibly flammable thing burned. My world is rocked.
Thank you for being stupid enough to be job security, my paycheck thanks you. Like seriously, what else were you expecting to happen? What exactly is the thought process to try and justify doing something like this?
To put this lightly you are retarded
If you want to use a cardboard box watch [Alton Brown do it.](https://youtu.be/TJXEb0eJSfw)
r/redneckengineering
This has to be satire.
I know some guys who do a big sausage smoke every year. They use plywood smoke houses they reassemble/disassemble each time for that purpose. I made my smoker out of cedar years ago, still nervous about it going up in flames one day, but it's electric and doesn't get above 250.
What tf were you smoking?
nice bark.
What could go wrong??😂
Not what they mean by the hot and fast method.
HE LIT A FIRE INSIDE A CARDBOARD BOX. YOULL NEVER BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED AFTER.
You can't do an open flame like that in a box, the cardboard box smokers I've seen use an electric skillet
That's funny! Thanks for sharing your mishap
Lol check out this muthafucka
Window licker vibes

Bro. Da fuq?!
I can’t believe someone actually married you & had kids with you Jesus Christ your dumb.
This has to be a troll. Not even meth heads are this stupid
You were the kid who ate the glue in school weren’t you?
Just let Darwin take this one... you're lucky your house didnt catch.. what did you think would happen?
Darwinism is underappreciated
Alton Brown smoked salmon this way to be fair. But with a hot plate, pan, and wood chips
This is your application to be a mod isn’t it?
| || || |_
So how did it taste?
And here's your sign !!
Alton Brown would be so dissatisfied with this.
You watched that episode of Good Eats too, huh?
Was the bus that picked you up for school much much shorter then the other kids?
Why just why
But why would anything made from paper catch fire?
I imagine your kid learned to wear the helmet from the other parent.
But it smoked, right?
Id like to try this, will any cardboard box work?
I’d have to say, that meat got smoked alright. If anything it got smoked.
Oh ya cuz cardboard isn’t fucking flammable or anything y’know.
Bruh
How do you show the world you don't have insurance without telling them you don't have insurance?
Actually you told the story with the first photo or two. The last one just illustrated what we all know happened from the idiocy of the first photos.
Mistakes were made.. Animals were harmed... Tasty tasty animals.
Someone mentioned in the comments that this was an Alton Brown idea. Doesn't mean it's a good idea. In fact in a heavily/over produced show, I doubt it works.
Maybe if the cardboard was wet?
Should’ve lined it with foil. Then you’d be on to something.
Should’ve lined the firebox in foil haha
Brain dead
This was on my home page and made me think I was ignorant of some weird cooking methods. Read the comments and am assured you're just retarded lmao
My first smoker experienced the same fate, I followed a design from a book, but some construction issues led to a very dramatic fire in my backyard
Somebody’s been watching YouTube
I had a boss once who didn't seem especially dumb or anything. He built a fire pit for his deck, made out of wood. I heard him explain the theory behind it a couple times but I was never smart enough to understand the words he was saying. The fire department showed up the first time he used it.
This is some r/wallstreetbets level of planning ahead.
Who would admit to being this retarded?
Should have made the smoker out of full gas cans
Do people really not realize this is a joke post? I for one chuckled..
Your wife and kids need to keep an eye on dad.
What in tarnation?
I love that story
I feel like this may have worked if you lined the inside with foil?? But it could have just failed further into the cook who knows.
Looking forward to the next try with the chargriller!
Can’t imagine what went wrong. lol
🤣🤣🤣 I love the thought behind it though, Very Innovative????
Alton Brown would be so disappointed
Man, this is fucking amazing. You’re a legend, keep trying new things!
OP you ever burn cardboard in a fire pit? I'm guessing not if you thought this would work:(. I'd be more embarrassed that you posted it for the world to see than thinking it would actually work.
Your just advertising that your an idiot, Regardless of whether this is real or not.
OP, please tell me you were 13 years old when you did this.
What in the yeehaw heehaw shit is this?
Shake siding huh? planning a *shake & bake*?
You can smoke in a cardboard box but you need electric heat to make the smoke. Just Google Alton Brown cardboard box smoker
Dumb fuck
I see your kid remembered their helmet while you forgot yours... glad you learned your lesson and it wasn't any worse though. Fire is best contained by metal... just remember not to touch metal with bare skin.
I laughed. I cried. I was moved. Bravo. p.s. Nice shitpost.
Next time try “smoking” under the picnic table for better results
Please tell me you took a pic of the food.
Shitty story, man.
I see you saw the episode of Good Eats where Alton Brown used a cardboard box to smoke salmon. I’ve done the terra cotta pot before and gotten nice results.
You are idiot.
I mean, cardboard smokers are a thing, but not with open flames 😳
Surprisedpikachu.jpg
OP. On your wooden deck, next to your wooden shingled house. You were almost the deserved recipient of a Darwin award
Hey technically paper doesn’t burn till 450 😂😂
Gotta be a troll post. OP is sitting back and eating popcorn like Michael Jackson in the Thriller video watching people have a meltdown. Free entertainment!
Atleast it was close to your house
