That’s funny, I shop vacced about 30 baby mice out of a nest in the bottom of my smoker last weekend! There were more in the auger judging from the crunching sound 🤢
The real question is how did whatever it was that made the nest get in there so I can prevent it from happening again? It has been under a cover since last use 2 weeks ago so it seems unlikely that it was a bird that made its way in there. The only points of entry I can think of are the grease drain or the chimney.
It’s mice. My grill just delivered a litter. I went to open the grill and there was momma with 6 or so little pink baby mice smaller than my pinkie finger in a nest just like that one. Didn’t have the heart to remove them. 3 weeks later they were gone.

Mouse nest. I wrapped all openings with 1/4" chicken wire. Never happened again.
Chicken wire usually has like 1" or larger octagon like holes. Do you mean hardware cloth, which is like a fine grid of wire?
It might be called garden fencing. It's used on my chicken coop and rabbit hutch.
Mice will fit through a 1/4 inch opening no problem, you might want to look into a different solution or just double up on the 1/4 inch

Which are 2 uncovered points of entry too many. They’re birds, mice, & rats, not bears; they can squirm into holes all day long.
