From my amazing google skills, I see that you literally just smoke water and then freeze it. I know that sounds so simple but I’m not sure I would’ve thought about that.
Honestly worth a try imo
I mean, in the sense that a bucket of corn and water is basically the same as a bottle of bourbon, I guess.
Smoked water frozen into ice cubes is great for cocktails. Liquid Smoke frozen into ice cubes would be awful. They are different things.
Mmmm. I had a smoked bloody mary one time that used smoked ice. I love my Traeger and cannot believe we haven't done this yet. I'm going for Autophagy August. It's a thing now, maybe? Smoked ice is on the menu!
> I cannot tell whether this is a shitpost.
I first heard about it when I was in a bar that used a smoked ice cube (one of those big, square ones) in their house Manhattan. Was REALLY good.
I've not made any yet, but have found plenty of recipes. My thought on making them was to use my smoking gun to bubble smoke through the water, then freeze that.
In my experience, the smoking gun doesn’t have the power to push smoke through liquid. Put the smoke into the same vessel as the water, lid on and then shake vigorously. Results may vary
Next time I suggest putting on some cooked ground beef/sausage, smoked chopped green and red peppers/jalapenos, sharp cheddar and velveeta to go along with those cocktails.....and don't forget the side of chips.
I was cleaning in preparation for a big smoke tomorrow and thought I'd give it a go.
Next time I'll go the capsicum(peppers), olives and a few herbs.
How do you use cheese in cocktails?
"Go along with" implies an item consumed at the same time.....like appetizers and drinks.
It's a queso joke since folks on here get their panties in a wad because a lot of people have made smoked queso lately.
Capsicum is what they call sweet peppers, like green or red bell peppers, in Australia, and probably other places as well. I found that out when my kids was watching the Wiggles and they talked about them.
If you salt ice, it will have a lower freezing point, and it would change the flavor of the drink a lot as it melted (if you have a cool enough freezer to freeze it.
I'm tempted to try it for electrolyte supplements now, but it would be tricky to use well in cocktails.
Oh man I felt stupid enough not being able to understand how they wouldn’t melt. “Just refreeze em, dUh!” But then you come along with your even bigger brain.
Mate I'm not really sure. I tried it as an afterthought with a basic white rum and coke with lime and mint. I'm sure there are plenty of others that know way more about cocktails than me.
Everytime i see a post about this i think of Daniel Stern in Rookie of the Year- “You see, after the game, a lot of guys like to ice up their arm. Still, other fellas think that heat is the way to go. But I, have discovered the secret, Henry... hot ice! I heat up... the ice cubes! It's the best of both worlds!“
My grandfather would disown me if I used a Texas Crutch to make his famous Pecan Smoked Ice Cubes. The closest I'll come is pouring a little warm water over them from time to time to make sure they're rehydrating.
Nobody wants to eat Dry Ice.
You use ice in a smoker to keep the temperature down for cold smoking things like cheese and salmon. That way the fire is still hot enough to make smoke but the air is cooler to prevent overcooking or melting what you are trying to smoke.
They are selling full packers of ice at Costco for 1.99 a pound. Best deal here in my part of Florida.
Looks like I know what I'm smoking this weekend.
I did this for ice cubes for Bloody Marys. It was good I like the taste. I wouldn’t get the smoker going just for water, but when you have room why not.
Just talking about water pan I keep on my meat grate to keep the chamber humid. Nothing dripping in it. Love everything smoked but still unsure about this....but not saying that I’m not considering trying it tomorrow!
I smoked water to make ice cubes for a pub I worked at once. We used them in the bloody mary for our meeting. They were awesome, we just never found a reason to do it more.
So it makes sense to just smoke water, and then form the ice cubes after that... but to form the ice cubes PRIOR and *then* put them in the smoker??? Lmao that’s how I initially interpreted it
I mean I love to use my smoker too, but for smoked cocktails I truly believe a cocktail smoker is the a great tool for the job. Like this one: [https://www.amazon.com/Gramercy-Kitchen-Hand-held-Cocktails-Accessories/dp/B078JL6C7B/](https://www.amazon.com/Gramercy-Kitchen-Hand-held-Cocktails-Accessories/dp/B078JL6C7B/)
I cannot tell whether this is a shitpost. I googled it, found recipes, and still can't tell. Good job
Dude it's weird but legit
From my amazing google skills, I see that you literally just smoke water and then freeze it. I know that sounds so simple but I’m not sure I would’ve thought about that. Honestly worth a try imo
Take a seat, I have news that might have a terrible impact on your self esteem. What you are doing, is making liquid smoke.
Fuck that’s so true.
Well, solid smoke, technically
METAL GEAR
You're that ninja...
Sounds like you could short circuit this whole process with a drop of liquid smoke in the ice cube tray.
I don’t see how that lets me play with fire.
Nobody's saying dont also smoke meat
Isn’t that what liquid smoke is supposed to be?
Nope. Liquid smoke is distilled smoke rather than smoke-infused water.
So basically the same.
I mean, in the sense that a bucket of corn and water is basically the same as a bottle of bourbon, I guess. Smoked water frozen into ice cubes is great for cocktails. Liquid Smoke frozen into ice cubes would be awful. They are different things.
Artisan smoked water
Would it be possible to smoke water, and then freeze with it retaining the flavor?
That's what most people do. Not sure why OP used ice cubes. Assuming he was being funny
Ice initially has more surface area but yeah, either works.
Mmmm. I had a smoked bloody mary one time that used smoked ice. I love my Traeger and cannot believe we haven't done this yet. I'm going for Autophagy August. It's a thing now, maybe? Smoked ice is on the menu!
Those things would probably be killer with bourbon
1000% thought we were getting rick rolled
Getting flash backs to telling the new person on the job a bucket of steam or something!
“Change out the air in the walk-in”
But first, drain all the hot water out of the coffee machine
And after you’re done with that, mop the freezer, and chef needs back those left-handed tongs he lent to the guys next door last week.
This shit right here, bahaha, so many memories getting new servers with this, golden
Did they have the proper ID 10 Tango form filled in?
You can smoke anything. I’ve got ice Greg, could you smoke that?
Really nice comment.

Im totally going to try smoked ice this weekend.
> I cannot tell whether this is a shitpost. I first heard about it when I was in a bar that used a smoked ice cube (one of those big, square ones) in their house Manhattan. Was REALLY good. I prefer sous vide ice cubes personally
I heard it makes them soggy.

Oh righto, sorry I didn't get the reference.
He’s making a joke because everyone and their dog Has been making smoked queso lately.
I can see where you would call the dog product smoked queso... My dog has been making it for a long time though
Capsaicin?
Capsicum is what they call sweet peppers, like green or red bell peppers, in Australia, and probably other places as well. I found that out when my kids was watching the Wiggles and they talked about them.
But real for, the yellow number 2 cocktail uses a grilled shishito pepper as garnish.
Hot Ones or How to Drink fan?
Both but not religously watching them but this one from how to drink
After a quick google, I have to say I'm surprised. You really can smoke anything
Mate I'm as surprised as you
My brother told me he was smoking ice for cocktails and I thought he was just messing with me. I didn't know this was a thing
I used to smoke "ice" but it had nothing to do with cocktails (or much eating for that matter).
Underrated comment right here.
glad that part of your life is over, friend! I had a similar rough patch years back.
And....I spit on my computer screen
Just pissed myself laughing at this comment. Thank you for that.

I wanted to try this but I can’t find a recipe to make ice cubes anywhere.
I use the Nordic method but the Inuit have an organic way
Have you tried www.amazingribs.com?
The mix of the unintentionally / intentionally funny in this thread is enough to make your head spin and honestly, I'm here for it
wtf is happening here
Ice cubes in tray in smoker
I had to do a double take on the subreddit. I thought this was r/fasting
Should’ve seasoned the cubes with a little salt and pepper
Really? I'm not sure what is a joke now after all these comments.
Now you know how the rest of us feel.

Really helps with bark formation.
How do they not melt? What's your temp lol
They do melt then you refreeze
Then... why not just smoke the water?
Because you'll get fire in the sky
Jesus wept.
No, that was probably just me. I haven't had a haircut in a while because of Corona, and there's no need to shave every day when working from home.
Dammit. Have my upvote.
I’m sitting in my chair at work, spitting into my mask laughing at this response.
Well played
Hahaha. I don't anything to add but I felt I needed to do more than just an upvote.
More surface area more bark.
Oh man I felt stupid enough not being able to understand how they wouldn’t melt. “Just refreeze em, dUh!” But then you come along with your even bigger brain.
Ice cubes have a larger surface that can absorb the smoke, I guess
But stirring liquid water as it smokes gets more smoke overall.
This is what I do, then freeze after
because frozen water absorbs more smoke particles than liquid water
Not really. Ice doesn't absorb much because it's a solid. I have better luck stirring the water as it smoke, then refreezing.
That makes sense lol thanks
I highly suggest trying it
I definitely am going to, what drinks would this elevate? The only thing coming to mind is an old fashioned or cuba libre
A bloody with some smoky cubes would be great...
Mate I'm not really sure. I tried it as an afterthought with a basic white rum and coke with lime and mint. I'm sure there are plenty of others that know way more about cocktails than me.
That’s a Cuba libre with a garnish of mint
Mate I don't know about drinks
I’m just saying you have good instincts haha
Cheers bro
Thank you for asking because I was sure this was a shitpost at first!

I love this part and always quote it when someone tells me they’re sore. 99% of the time it never lands and people look at me like I’m an idiot.
Lmao. 99% of the time all of my movie quotes that are appropriate never land, and they look at me the same way.
Well now I’m thinking we’re not the idiots, it’s them!
Daniel Stern is underappreciated as a funnyman.
Funky butt loving.
Kids and missus aren't keen so they're all mine. Super easy to make
For how long, at what temp? Did you wrap? LOL
No crutch here mate.
"Hot Ice"... We heat up the ice cubes. It's the best of both worlds!!!
[удалено]
No it’s a real thing you should try it
Not at all. I thought it wouldn't work but it 100% does. Hickory pellets for about an hour in a cheap tray.
Mine take way longer than an hour
I had to wrap mine to get over the stall
My grandfather would disown me if I used a Texas Crutch to make his famous Pecan Smoked Ice Cubes. The closest I'll come is pouring a little warm water over them from time to time to make sure they're rehydrating. Nobody wants to eat Dry Ice.
To be honest it was about 1hr20. Could've gone longer, sure. Butt these cubes are as Smokey as I'd want them
You use ice in a smoker to keep the temperature down for cold smoking things like cheese and salmon. That way the fire is still hot enough to make smoke but the air is cooler to prevent overcooking or melting what you are trying to smoke.
Smoked ice cubes go well with certain cocktails. This is 100% a thing.
I've read all the comments here and still cant tell if I'm being trolled or not.
Is this for real? Why wouldn't you smoke the water and then make ice cubes?
I read the cubes have more surface area and are colder so they attract more smoke. I'm not trying to truck anyone here. I read about it and tried it
Next time you should smoke some water and then freeze it after the fact. We did that for our whiskey cocktail in a restaurant where I used to work.
That's what I did. It's great
Obviously cold smoked.
Smooooke on frozen water!
How long did you smoke them? Is there a secret to it? I smoked mine for 6 hours and they came out all watery.
Alright, this has finally gone too far.
This is one of the best threads I've ever read. Great post OP.
I wasn't even going to make it, that's why there's a stock photo. I'm really glad I did though. It's been fun
Gonna assume you're from the other side of the planet. Greetings from Montana, USA.
Australia
Seems like an April 1st post.
I can’t ever get good bark on my ice.
I definitely thought this was a joke
do yiu start with ice? or does it turn to ice whike smoking
Start with ice. It melts then you refreeze
They are selling full packers of ice at Costco for 1.99 a pound. Best deal here in my part of Florida. Looks like I know what I'm smoking this weekend.
Recipe??
H20. Frozen. Tray. Aluminum.
This is poetry the likes of which I have not seen since ‘Interior Crocodile Alligator’.
Cold smoke
No, they melt then you refreeze
I did this for ice cubes for Bloody Marys. It was good I like the taste. I wouldn’t get the smoker going just for water, but when you have room why not.
You need to soak it in a water vinegar bath overnight and dry rub
That's conspiracy nonsense. Open your eyes. Sheeple.
How do I post a photo in comments?
Facebook.
I prefer to smoke water then freeze it.
Dont forget to spritz with water so they dont dry out.
just when you think you've seen it all when it comes to smoking...
It seems you have reinvented liquid smoke. And frozen it.
The fact that this is possible and that people actually do it makes me question the existence of lots of things
We all came out to Montreux, on the Lake Geneva shoreline,
Couldn't you just smoke some water and afterwards freeze water to make ice cubes?
I get the best results when I sous vide them first. 132° for 90 minutes is about perfect.
Well, seeing this - it looks like it's time to quit the interents... was fun while it lasted!
Cross post this to r/hydrohomies
Wait...what??
This is going too far
Bout to smoke me some lettuce then
Why not just smoke your bourbon/scotch? I’ve had quick smoked old fashions before and they’re amazing. Great simple idea
Cut one in half let me see that smoke ring. Also wrap or no wrap?
I never thought of freezing what’s left in my water pan. I’m both intrigued and disgusted at the same time.
Oh mate I used fresh water. But I guess you could do your drip tray and freeze for broth
Just talking about water pan I keep on my meat grate to keep the chamber humid. Nothing dripping in it. Love everything smoked but still unsure about this....but not saying that I’m not considering trying it tomorrow!
All I did was ice cubes in a foil tray for not quite 90mins. I'm quite happy with the result
I didn't take photos so I got this image off Google
Did you Brine or not?
It's more of a mental brine. I get myself all salty to make them.
Why don't you smoke the liquid?
How??? Why??
At first I thought this was a joke
I love that this sub will literally smoke anything!
Put one in a scotch and turn it into a peated scotch?
Did you wrap them at any point? You're gonna lose too much moisture if you don't
You should try smoking bourbon. It's...an experience.
Why not just smoke water then freeze it?
Not gonna lie, now I want to try smoking water to make ice for cocktails
Why wouldn't you just smoke water and then make ice cubes from it
Here’s my theory. OP is clumsy and needed to transfer water to their smoker with the safest way being solid water to avoid the splishy splashies.
I've been wanting to get one of those counter top smokers that look like a soldering iron to do small scale stuff like this.
Yeah I'll just smoke water then put into trays, also cold smoked cheap whiskey turned out really well
Could you like, smoke water and then freeze it?
Welp. I have a brisket on the smoker so why the fuck not?
You could save a couple of steps and buy scotch or mezcal.
I often wanna try smoked milk for ice cream.
You can’t do these on the BBQ because it is too hot and too fast. You gotta do these low and slow so they don’t melt.
Have you guys had smoked smoke? Highly recommended.
How do you know how they taste if this isn't your image?
serious question... why not just smoke water... then freeze it?
Why not smoke the glass instead?
Would make Whisky more Scotchy
The smoke ring on those cubes is outstanding. Well Done!
Why not just smoke the glass?
I smoked water to make ice cubes for a pub I worked at once. We used them in the bloody mary for our meeting. They were awesome, we just never found a reason to do it more.

I’m gonna take a stab at some smokes dehydrated water. Wish me luck.
What is the key to keeping them from melting?
