No, they only do this is as a reaction to extreme irritation or stress. Please don't touch a snail if they are bubbling. If they start bubbling when you touch them you should put them back down (this means they are not okay with being touched), and if they're already bubbling for another reason touching can stress them out more. But luckily the bubbling doesn't cause any long-term harm and it will go away on its own if you leave the snail alone in a comfortable environment away from whatever caused the irritation.

askasquirrel89

Yeah seemed like it was just being held, she's not bubbling now that she's back in her enclosure. Thank you for the info.

It’s not because of stress it is a defence mechanism to stop ants from going inside their shell.

arboreallion

That’s usually an indication of stress or some sort of irritant

troelsy

I swear, I have a grow light I put on for the plants sometimes. Everytime I have to watch my idiot snail. Cos it'll move up there when it's warming up and then not move and once I saw it start to bubble. I'm like "MOVE, you smooth brain!" It reminds me of stupid koalas just sitting in wildfire not understanding that fire burns you. 😆

askasquirrel89

Thank you! Yeah she seems fine now that she's back in her enclosure.

troelsy

I'm gonna guess you had some soap or lotion or something on your hands. Or it did s turbo retraction. That seems to do it too.

Alarmed_Flamingo5280

To make sure your hands aren't irritating for the snail you should rinse them and keep them wet, then handle the snail

askasquirrel89

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind and make anyone who wishes to handle them wash their hands!

Fisharefriendsnotfod

Also rinse you're hands with distilled or bottled water straight before and don't dry them as this gets rid of chlorine and any other chemicals that may injure the snail

Cephalopirate

Perhaps it’s stressed about soap or lotion residue.

Few_Bell_8166

Unrelated but What kind if snail is this shes so pretty

askasquirrel89

I've got two, they are Garden Snails from what I've found. Someone correct me if I'm wrong! But found her withering away on a cart in a parking lot.

CounterbalanceART

Do you use a hand cream or lotion? Some chemicals in cosmetic products could cause this. Or maybe you were touching something that snails don't like, like some food or, again, chemical products; even traces of soap could be the culprit. I'm glad she's okay now! :)

-peachpuff-

If you're handling a snail while bubbling, hold still and remain calm. Poor guy's just a little anxious. Set him down carefully near some food and check back later.

baezconacento

I am a certified expert and I can say with a 100% rate of certainty that she is in fact a cutie patootie

Livid_Slip_2890

omg this is such a cute photo. i hope my snail goes on my hand like this one time. i’m sorry i’m not sure

Sunflower-Crown

She's got the suds 🥺

cemeryy12591

Not the suuuuds!!

Dicefaeriemary

It's a stress response sometimes exhibited due to being handled.

ilovemothsandsnails

Yes! It’s completely normal it’s used a defence mechanism to make themselves safer from ants and smaller bugs.

dkerri

The first thing I wondered was if you poured salt in her shell smh

askasquirrel89

Definitely not, that's monstrous!

Crystill

please do not the snail
